Usain Bolt’s speed explained by scientists

Usain Bolt’s extraordinary speed has been explained by scientists with a mathematical model.

Usain Bolt’s 100 m time of 9.58 seconds during the 2009 World Championships in Berlin is the current world record.

The scientists say their model explains the power and energy he had to expend to overcome drag caused by air resistance, made stronger by his frame of 6ft 5in.

Writing in the European Journal of Physics, the scientists hope to discover what makes extraordinary athletes so fast.

According to the mathematical model proposed, Usain Bolt’s time of 9.58 seconds in Berlin was achieved by reaching a speed of 12.2 metres per second, equivalent to about 27 mph.

The team calculated that Usain Bolt’s maximum power occurred when he was less than one second into the race and was only at half his maximum speed. This demonstrates the near immediate effect of drag, which is where air resistance slows moving objects.

They also discovered less than 8% of the energy his muscles produced was used for motion, with the rest absorbed by drag.

When comparing Usain Bolt’s body mass, the altitude of the track and the air temperature, they found out that his drag coefficient – which is a measure of the drag per unit area of mass – was actually less aerodynamic than that of the average man.

Jorge Hernandez of the National Autonomous University of Mexico said: “Our calculated drag coefficient highlights the outstanding ability of Bolt. He has been able to break several records despite not being as aerodynamic as a human can be.

“The enormous amount of work that Bolt developed in 2009, and the amount that was absorbed by drag, is truly extraordinary.

“It is so hard to break records nowadays, even by hundredths of a second, as the runners must act very powerfully against a tremendous force which increases massively with each bit of additional speed they are able to develop.

“This is all because of the ‘physical barrier’ imposed by the conditions on Earth. Of course, if Bolt were to run on a planet with a much less dense atmosphere, he could achieve records of fantastic proportions.

“The accurate recording of Bolt’s position and speed during the race provided a splendid opportunity for us to study the effects of drag on a sprinter.”

“If more data become available in the future, it would be interesting to see what distinguishes one athlete from another,” added Jorge Hernandez.

Usain Bolt’s time in Berlin was the biggest increase in the record since electronic timing was introduced in 1968.

John Barrow at Cambridge University who has previously analyzed how Usain Bolt could become even faster, explained that his speed came in part due his “extraordinary large stride length”, despite having such an initial slow reaction time to the starting gun.

“He has lots of fast twitch muscle fibres that can respond quickly, coupled with his fast stride is what gives him such an extraordinary fast time.”

John Barrow said Usain Bolt has lots of scope to break his record if he responded faster at the start, ran with a slightly stronger tail-wind and at a higher altitude, where there was less drag.

Usain Bolt’s Berlin record was won with a tail wind of only 0.9 m per second, which didn’t give him “the advantage of helpful wind assistance”, John Barrow added.

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt arrive in Tokyo with their children

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie landed in Haneda International Airport in Tokyo on Sunday with their children, Pax and twins Knox and Vivienne.

With Angelina Jolie, 38, stopping to sign a few autographs for the cheering crowd, it’s no wonder an airport’s arrivals lounge is considered one of the happiest places to be.

Wearing all black with large sunglasses, Angelina Jolie looked stylish but also glowed with good health as her thick brunette hair shined over her shoulders.

Brad Pitt was equally gleeful, but opted for muted earth tones of khaki, grey and beige for his travelling attire.

Intrigued by the ecstatic welcome to Tokyo from the Japanese fans of his starry parents, Knox grinned at the crowd as he held his father’s hand while walking through the airport.

Angelina Jolie may well have been the pilot on their flight following the reports that Brad splashed out on a private jet for his love.

According to Heat magazine, Brad Pitt, 49, bought the aircraft for his fiancée, who has held a pilot’s license since 2004, so that the couple could see each other more often, while they film movies on opposite sides of the world.

Brad Pitt is in London shooting World War II drama Fury, as Angelina Jolie directs her own war flick called Unbroken in Hawaii.

However, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt took a break from filming to fly with three of their children to the East to hit another destination on the World War Z promotional trail.

Despite production delays and massive production costs, the zombie movie exceeded expectations buy topping the global box office upon it’s opening at the start of July.

In the first 10 days, World War Z secured $263 million worldwide, before it had even opened in France, Germany and Japan.

World Youth Day 2013: Pope Francis holds final Mass on Copacabana beach

Pope Francis has closed World Youth Day festival in Rio de Janeiro with a Mass on Copacabana beach.

More than three million people are estimated to have gathered for the service in the city of Rio de Janeiro.

Many of the pilgrims had slept on the beach after attending an all-night vigil, which Pope Francis also led.

Sunday’s ceremony marks the end of the Pope’s five-day visit to Brazil – his first foreign trip since becoming pontiff in March.

Pope Francis is set to fly back to Rome later on Sunday.

Correspondents say almost every inch of the two-and-a-half mile long beach was occupied ahead of the Mass, as most of the young people stayed after the vigil, pitching tents or sleeping in the open.

The vigil and Sunday mass have attracted the biggest crowd ever to Copacabana beach, which has hosted rock concerts, sports events and the traditional New Year celebrations.

Pope Francis encouraged young Catholics to get out of their parochial boundaries in order to help others.

“Go and don’t be afraid of serving,” he said.

“Jesus did not gather the Apostles so they lived in isolation. He called them so they formed a group, a community,” said Pope Francis.

Pope Francis announced the next Catholic youth festival would be held in the Polish city of Krakow in 2016.

Female activists held a demonstration nearby in support of abortion and women’s rights.

In the past three decades, the Catholic church has lost millions of followers to smaller Christian denominations.

In his vigil address on Saturday, the pontiff had urged the pilgrims not to be “part-time Christians”, but to lead full, meaningful lives.

Speaking on a huge stage at the beach where a mock church structure was built, Pope Francis referred to the street protests which have been taking place in Brazil for more than a month.

“The young people in the street are the ones who want to be actors of change. Please don’t let others be actors of change,” he told the crowd at the vigil.

“Keep overcoming apathy and offering a Christian response to the social and political concerns taking place in different parts of the world.”

Also on Saturday, the Pope repeated his challenge to fellow Roman Catholic clerics to take to the streets.

Maharaja Harinder Singh Brar’s daughters win his $4 billion assets in court battle

The daughters of former Indian Maharaja Harinder Singh Brar have won a 21-year court battle to inherit more than $4 billion worth of assets.

A court in the northern city of Chandigarh said the will of Harinder Singh Brar, Maharaja of Faridkot – who died in 1989 – had been forged.

A court in the northern city of Chandigarh said the will of Harinder Singh Brar, Maharaja of Faridkot, who died in 1989, had been forged

The will had left Maharaja Harinder Singh Brar’s wealth in the care of a charitable trust set up by some of his servants and palace officials.

The assets include a 350-year-old royal fort and a private aerodrome.

But his daughter Amrit Kaur claimed the will had been written under duress, at a time when the maharaja was suffering from depression.

The court ruled in her favor, declaring the document void. The will came to light following the death of Harinder Singh Brar.

Harinder Singh Brar’s two surviving daughters will now inherit all the assets, which also include a property on one of Delhi’s most expensive streets as well as gold and vintage cars.

Harinder Singh Brar was the titular ruler of the Faridkot area of Punjab before India became independent in 1947.

Cannes thief steals $53 million Leviev jewels from Carlton Hotel

An armed man has stolen jewels worth about 40 million euros ($53 million) in the French Riviera resort of Cannes, officials say.

They say the hold-up took place on Sunday morning at a jewellery exhibition at the Carlton Hotel.

The hotel is located on the Croisette promenade – one of the most prestigious locations in the town.

The theft is the largest in a series of high-profile robberies in Cannes, which is famous for its annual film festival.

The Carlton Hotel is where Alfred Hitchcock filmed To Catch A Thief – his 1955 film about a jewel thief operating in the French Riviera.

During the latest theft, an exhibition of diamonds by the jeweller Leviev was being held in the lobby of the hotel.

Local media said the robber made off with the jewels in a briefcase. It is not yet known who the owner was.

If the value of the jewels is confirmed, it would reportedly be the second-largest heist in France.

A Cannes police spokesman said: “A full and urgent operation is under way to catch the culprit and recover these jewels. Thieves see Cannes as rich pickings.”

The Cannes film festival, which attracts celebrities from around the world, was hit by two jewellery thefts in May this year.

A necklace by Swiss jeweller De Grisogono reportedly worth 1.9 million euros ($2.5 million) vanished after a celebrity party at a five-star hotel in the resort town of Cap d’Antibes.

A week before, more than 777,000 euros ($1 million) worth of jewels were taken from the hotel room of an employee of exclusive Swiss jewellers Chopard.

The Carlton Hotel itself saw also a huge robbery in August 1994, when gunmen burst into its jewellery store just as it was closing and made off with jewels now valued at $77 million.

France’s biggest ever robbery took place in 2008, when three men stole almost every piece on display at a jewellery exhibition in Paris with an estimated value of 85 million euros ($113 million).

Christina Aguilera Shows Off Dramatic Weight Loss at Television Critics Association Event

Christina Aguilera silenced last year’s fat-shaming critics by showcasing her 20 lbs weight loss in a pink mini-dress at a NBC press event in Beverly Hills on Saturday.

Christina Aguilera, 32, looked confident and drop-dead gorgeous in the tiny cleavage-baring frock, which slightly fanned out at the skirt.

The four-time Grammy winner paired her slim new silhouette with platinum waves, a very dark tan, and Christian Louboutin heels.

Christina Aguilera shed the weight thanks to the 1,600-calorie Fresh Diet premium meal-delivery plan, yoga, and regular sessions with trainer Tee Sorge.

“She did it all on her own,” an insider told Us Weekly last month.

“A lot of people were on her about her weight and it depressed her. She went through a bad time because of the criticism.”

A friend of Christina Aguilera’s revealed that she still “wants to lose a bit more”, but “she feels great”.

She joined The Voice‘s Adam Levine, CeeLo Green, and Carson Daly for the Television Critics Association event at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

Christina Aguilera addressed her absence last season, which was filled by Columbian pop star Shakira.

“Thank god for Shakira, she did a beautiful job, she has sweet, lovely energy,” Christina Aguilera told reporters.

“I cannot live in front of the camera 24 hours a day. I have to take breaks and stay connected with myself…When the cameras go off, I put on sweats and a T-shirt and I’m mom. [My son Max] starts kindergarten in the fall so I’m excited about that.”

Auditions are already underway for the NBC singing competition’s fifth season – premiering September 23.

And The Voice producers are also reportedly pleased with Christina Aguilera’s recent weight loss.

“Show execs hope her new look will spark viewers’ interest in her again and get people tuning in,” a show insider told Us Weekly.

MitoQ: Anti-ageing cream discovered by accident while testing drugs to cure liver disease

0

When British researchers at Cambridge University were looking for a cure for liver damage and accidentally created a cream they feel certain will be a powerful anti-ageing product.

MitoQ – which claims to soften the skin while lightening and actually reversing the signs of ageing – is a patented blend of unique ingredients, which scientists Mike Murphy and Rob Smith stumbled across while trying to find a cure for liver disease.

MitoQ anti-ageing cream was discovered by accident while testing drugs to cure liver disease
MitoQ anti-ageing cream was discovered by accident while testing drugs to cure liver disease

Their work culminated in the discovery of a delivery system that floods cells with antioxidants – health-giving molecules that inhibit oxygenation of cells – straight into the mitochondria, the source of free radicals, which are responsible for ageing and tissue damage.

Dr. Michael Murphy explains: “Mitochondria are like batteries that provide the energy that all of our cells need to operate and stay healthy, including skin cells.

“Unfortunately this process also releases free radicals, which actually damage our cells.

“Antioxidants are the body’s natural defense mechanism to combat free radicals, but ageing happens because as we get older our bodies produce fewer antioxidants and can’t fight free radicals as effectively. This is what causes wrinkles and lines to appear.”

They also claim: “This is a major scientific breakthrough that enhances our natural antioxidant capacity restoring our cells to optimal function.”

Umami Burger opens its first New York location at 432 Sixth Avenue

0

West Coast Umami Burger has just landed in New York.

Mila Kunis hired Umami Burger to cater Ashton Kutcher’s birthday party, Taylor Swift is often seen at the Los Angeles locations, and San Francisco customers will line up for 90 minutes just to get a taste of one of their burgers.

“The water is different in New York, so our buns, which we make on-site, have been a challenge for us,” explained Brian Rosman, Umami Burger’s spokesman.

“They are a little more crinkly than we are used to, but they’re still very soft inside.”

The burgeoning burger chain will open its first New York location at 432 Sixth Avenue on Monday.

It is the first of three outposts set to open in the near future, with another location coming to Williamsburg early next year, and a third to the Financial District’s Brookfield Place soon after.

“Our customers have been asking for us to open in New York for years, but it took a while to find the perfect location,” said Brian Rosman.

Umami Burger, which aims to bring the fifth flavor, savory, to the quick-service burger, has been somewhat of an enigma for foodies on the East Coast since its launch in 2009.

The outfit, which has grown in just four short years from a $40,000 investment to a multimillion-dollar enterprise, quickly became famous for its list of secret, off-menu items, which vary from location to location.

Umami Burger opens its first New York location at 432 Sixth Avenue

Favorites include the Pink Slime burger, a riff on the controversy surrounding ammonia-treated beef bits used in some commercial U.S. food products, and the Dork, a duck-pork hybrid.

Ingredients are all chosen for their addictive, umami-rich flavor – shiitake mushrooms, Parmesan wafers, truffles soaked in port wine – which are carefully crafted, according to creator Adam Fleischman, to alter New Yorkers’ tired perception of what a hamburger should be.

“They are driven from culinary inspiration,” said Brian Rosman.

“We did one called the Stink burger for example, which was a combination of really stinky stuff. Garlic, fried anchovies, and cheese, to be exact.”

“The chefs are inspired by what’s happening out in the world, ingredients of the moment,” he added.

“Sometime takes two days to perfect a burger, sometimes a year, they will tinker and tinker and tinker until they get it exactly right.”

The word umami, first popularized in the early 1900s by a Tokyo scientist named Kikunae Ikeda, who invented the term and sits on the wall of Umami Burger’s restaurants, loosely translates in Japanese to “deliciousness”.

The “fifth” taste (the other four being sweet, sour, salty, and bitter), can be found in the tangy and faintly acidic flavor of gently cooked tomatoes, anchovies, Parmesan cheese, and soy sauce.

Aside from striving for the ultimate “umami bomb”, as Umami Burger chefs call it, the bun-to-burger ratio aims to create balance in the burger – one reason why the chain has become such a favorite.

Adam Fleischman’s beef patties, all sprinkled in his own Umami Dust, are six pounds and coarsely ground in-house, instead of prepacked and delivered to the restaurant in a truck.

And the Portuguese-style buns, neither too big nor too small for the Umami patty, are baked exclusively for Umami Burger, made with milk to enhance the umami flavor.

Each hamburger, featuring a very shiny bun, is plated by itself on porcelain like a fine restaurant entree, next to a selection of Umami-made toppings – the exclusive ketchup and garlic aioli were favorites.

The Hatch Burger, made with roasted green chiles, and the famous Truffle Burger were brought out alongside the restaurant’s Cheesy Totes – only available by request off the secret menu.

Petro Wodkins creates fake Armani diapers ad to send message about consumerism

Russian artist Petro Wodkins has created a fake ad for Armani diapers in a bid to send a message about consumerism.

Petro Wodkins, from Moscow, fooled readers and news outlets alike with his black-and-white ad, which showed a group of babies in a lavish room wearing 23 euro ($30) diapers with the Armani logo.

He told NBC News that the spoof, which bore the tagline “When only the best is good enough”, was “a statement on unbridled consumption in the formerly Communist nation” of Russia.

The advertisement was published on armanirussia.ru, a URL Petro Wodkins designed to look exactly like the Armani Russia website.

It showed a group of babies rolling around on a bearskin rug, in a room adorned with chandeliers, marble pillars and ornate furniture.

According to Hint Fashion Magazine, Petro Wodkins then sent individuals a forged e-mail from Mercedez-Benz New York Fashion Week, which discussed the possibility of selling Armani diapers in Russia.

The ad was apparently attached in the e-mail, and subsequently was sent to news websites.

“The fashion industry is pushing the boundaries for consumerism,” Petro Wodkins told the Huffington Post.

Petro Wodkins has created a fake ad for Armani diapers in a bid to send a message about consumerism

“I wanted to see what happened if I pushed the boundaries for them. To see if anyone would react.”

While the artist claimed that the hoax was directed at the fashion industry as a whole, and not at Armani in particular, the designer label has since issued a statement against the artist, noting that it plans to take legal action.

“Following reports of the business activities of the e-commerce website Armanirussia.ru the Armani Group wishes to emphasize its non-involvement in the initiative,” says the statement.

“The item for sale, especially in the baby section, are counterfeit, as are the photographs advertising them. Legal action for the immediate closure of the website. . . has been promptly initiated.”

Despite the designer’s reaction, Petro Wodkins stands by his artistic endeavor.

“I think we see things close to Armani Diapers all the time,” he said.

“People sacrifice and abandon what they deep down think is right, for a higher purpose.

“I’d say deep down everyone is feeling that a scarf for $1,000 is wrong, but the scarf serves a higher purpose – to give you what you feel you need.”

As for Armani’s threats to take legal action, Petro Wodkins appears unfazed.

“I am open to have a coffee with them if they’d like to, instead of legal letters,” he told Hint Magazine.

“Maybe they don’t like me,” Petro Wodkins added.

“I like them. I like a lot of people not liking me back. But that’s who I am. I do my best to make people realize who they really are.”

It’s not the first time Petro Wodkins has incited controversy for his provocative pieces of art.

In May, he hid the iconic Manneken Pis statue in Belgium, Brussels, behind a golden effigy of himself.

And later that same month, he chained himself to the entrance of MUMOK museum in Austria, and sent out a fake PR e-mail stating that the museum was closed until further notice.

According to the Austrian Times, Petro Wodkins stated that his protest meant that art should “not be locked away in museums”, neither should it be about “socioeconomic positioning”.

Mali votes in presidential election

Polls open across Mali for a presidential election aimed at reuniting the country after months of political turmoil.

Security is tight, with many areas still recovering after a northern rebellion and coup that resulted in foreign military intervention.

There are 27 candidates and if no outright winner emerges, the voting goes to a second round on August 11.

However, some analysts have questioned whether Mali is ready for the election.

Hundreds of thousands of people in the north were displaced by fighting. The majority of them will not be able to vote.

Islamist militants in the north have also warned Muslims not to take part and have threatened to attack polling stations.

There are also concerns about the fairness of the electoral process in the northern town of Kidal, which is still occupied by Tuareg rebels.

Tuareg gunmen were suspected of abducting electoral officials in the northern Tessalit area last week as they handed out voter identification cards. The officials were later released.

French troops are still deployed in the area with Chadian forces as part of the UN stabilization force, Minusma.

Despite the problems, Louis Michel, head of the EU’s election observer mission, said he was “positively surprised” by preparations for the vote and that the conditions were acceptable.

The US ambassador to Bamako, Mary Beth Leonard, said the fragility of Mali’s interim government had to end.

“A month ago, there were a lot of doubts [over the election]. But it has come together,” Mary Beth Leonard said.

Candidates include three former prime ministers, a former finance minister and one woman.

The frontrunners include Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, prime minister from 1994 to 2000, who founded his own party, the Rally for Mali (RPM), in 2001.

At his final rally in the capital Bamako on Friday, Ibrahim Boubacar Keita – known as IBK – appealed for a calm election day and vowed to ensure that “no-one will make fun of Mali again”.

IBK’s biggest rival is seen as Soumaila Cisse, who founded his own party, the Union for the Republic and Democracy (URD), in 2003.

Soumaila Cisse has called for the junta that seized power in 2012 to be cleared from the political scene.

Observers say Soumana Sacko, another former prime minister, can expect a good showing if there is no clear winner.

Cambodia votes in general elections

Polls have opened in Cambodia’s parliamentary election, with PM Hun Sen’s governing party widely expected to win the most seats.

Hun Sen’s Cambodia People’s Party (CPP) faces an opposition led by Sam Rainsy – back from self-imposed exile after a royal pardon in July.

Sam Rainsy himself is not eligible to stand, but his recent return has strengthened the opposition’s campaign.

More than nine million people are expected to cast their votes.

Hun Sen, 60, was among the early voters, casting his ballot shortly after polls opened near his home in Takmau, south of the capital Phnom Penh.

He has been Cambodia’s prime minister for nearly three decades.

Hun Sen is one of Asia’s longest-serving leaders, and has expressed the desire to stay in power for another decade.

Sam Rainsy, 64, visited a polling station near his party’s office in Phnom Penh where supporters greeted him enthusiastically.

“I am happy to see people flocking to vote,” he said.

The CPP, which enjoys considerable support in the countryside, currently has 90 of the 123 seats in parliament and has been increasing its majority over the years.

This is due in part to Hun Sen being widely credited with achieving economic growth after the devastation caused by the Khmer Rouge regime in the 1970s, which was responsible for one of the worst mass killings of the 20th Century.

The opposition Cambodian National Rescue Party (CNRP) – led by Sam Rainsy – is aiming to win seats with the promise of political change.

In 2010 Sam Rainsy was sentenced in absentia to 11 years in prison, on a series of charges he says were politically motivated.

The opposition is a merger between the Sam Rainsy’s party and the Human Rights Party.

Analysts believe that younger voters may possibly help the opposition in the elections.

However, the CNRP faces an uphill battle. Most of the country’s media is controlled by the government, and human rights activists have also pointed out that the elections may not end up being free and fair.

Programming president Michael Lombardo said he could not imagine the show airing because James Gandolfini would not continue with the drama.

Criminal Justice, an adaptation of the 2008 BBC series, saw James Gandolfini playing a New York lawyer.

Speaking to The Television Critics Association, Michael Lombardo said it was difficult to think of recasting that part and was unclear what the future was for the project.

The Sopranos star James Gandolfini had also finished two films before he died. Crime film Animal Rescue and the romance Enough Said are still awaiting release.

Enough Said, which also stars Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Catherine Keener, will have its premiere at the Toronto Film Festival in September.

Albert Buitenhuis: South African chef faces expulsion from New Zealand for being too fat

0

A South African chef living in New Zealand has been told by authorities he is too fat to be allowed to live in the country.

Immigration officials said Albert Buitenhuis, who weighs 286 lbs, did not have “an acceptable standard of health”.

Albert Buitenhuis now faces expulsion despite shedding 66 lbs since he moved to the city of Christchurch six years ago.

New Zealand has one of the highest obesity rates in the developed world, with nearly 30% of people overweight.

Albert Buitenhuis and his wife, Marthie, moved from South Africa to Christchurch in 2007. At the time, the chef weighed 352 lbs.

New Zealand’s immigration officials said Albert Buitenhuis, who weighs 286 lbs, did not have an acceptable standard of health
New Zealand’s immigration officials said Albert Buitenhuis, who weighs 286 lbs, did not have an acceptable standard of health

Until now, their annual work visas had been renewed with “very little problem”, his wife said.

“We applied year after year and there were no issues,” she said.

“They never mentioned Albert’s weight or his health once and he was a lot heavier then.”

But in early May, the couple was told their work visas had been declined because of Albert Buitenhuis’s weight.

“The irony is that at the moment he weighs less than when we first arrived in New Zealand and also less than in his first medical, which was accepted by [immigration authorities],” his wife said.

The couple has appealed to New Zealand’s immigration minister, citing the chef’s recent weight loss.

An immigration spokesman said Albert Buitenhuis’s application had been rejected because his obesity put him at “significant risk” of complications including diabetes, hypertension and heart disease.

“It is important that all migrants have an acceptable standard of health to minimize costs and demands on New Zealand’s health services,” he said.

Cecile Kyenge: Italy’s first black minister attacked with bananas

Italian politicians have reacted with anger after Cecile Kyenge, the country’s first black minister, had bananas thrown at her during a political rally.

Integration Minister Cecile Kyenge, who has suffered racial abuse in the past, dismissed the act as “a waste of food”.

But Environment Minister Andrea Orlando said on Twitter he felt the “utmost indignation” over the incident.

Earlier this month an Italian senator apologized after saying Cecile Kyenge reminded him of an orangutan.

Congolese-born Cecile Kyenge was speaking at a Democratic Party (PD) rally in Cervia on Friday when an unidentified spectator threw bananas towards the stage, narrowly missing her.

Italian police say they are trying to find the culprit.

Responding on Twitter, Cecile Kyenge called the incident “sad” and “a waste of food”.

“The courage and optimism to change things has to come above all from the bottom up to reach the institutions,” she added.

Italian politicians rallied behind her on Saturday with messages of support and condemnation.

Education Minister Maria Chiara Carrozza praised Cecile Kyenge for her courage and determination in such a hostile climate.

Veneto regional governor Luca Zaia from the anti-immigration Northern League also spoke out against the incident, saying: “Throwing bananas, personal insults… acts like these play no part in the civilized and democratic discussion needed between the minister and those who don’t share her opinion.”

Correspondents say the slurs and threats suffered by Cecile Kyenge have highlighted the extent of casual racism in Italian society.

Senate vice-president Roberto Calderoli, of the Northern League, faced calls to quit earlier this month after making the orangutan remarks.

Roberto Calderoli told parliament he had made a “serious mistake” with his “offensive” comment and he would send Cecile Kyenge a bunch of roses.

Porter Ridge: New reality series from Duck Dynasty creator staring rural Hoosiers

Porter Ridge, a new reality show set in rural Spencer, Indiana, is the latest brainchild of Duck Dynasty‘s creator Gurney Productions.

In contrast to the duck-call empire built in West Monroe, Louisiana, Porter Ridge is a comedic documentary series centered on Terry Porter and his Country Auto Parts company.

Porter Ridge will premiere on the Discovery Channel at 10:30 p.m., on August 13.

A tight-knit circle of friends in Owen County sought out the limelight of cable television, according to Discovery Channel executive producer Joe Weinstock.

Jeff Watson, known as Jeff the Bear Man because of the eight brown bears he owns, watched an episode of Duck Dynasty and found contact information for that show’s co-creator, Scott Gurney.

“[Jeff Watson] literally cold-emailed [Scott Gurney], saying <<I have some great neighbors who surround me in this little rural community in Southern Indiana. You need to come check them out>>,” Joe Weinstock said.

“You can imagine Scott getting many of these types of emails. For some reason, he responded to this one.”

On Porter Ridge Road, Scott Gurney discovered salvage yard owner Porter, described as a “fast-talking, shirtless, wild man” in Discovery promotional material.

“He does not wear a shirt, and he probably has one of the most beautiful tans known to man,” Joe Weinstock said.

Porter Ridge viewers will meet Dirty Andy, a bearded deal maker, and Elvis Larry, a garbage man who loves to share gossip.

“This is so real, so visceral, so authentic,” Joe Weinstock said.

“You can’t put a better group of characters together. It’s amazing how all these individuals just live by each other.”

While Duck Dynasty is based on the Robertson family, owners of Duck Commander, no cast members of Porter Ridge live in a mansion.

“Money is not the most important object for these individuals,” Joe Weinstock said.

“It’s family, religion and fun.”

In addition to Porter being shirtless and Jeff Watson keeping bears on leashes, Porter Ridge features demolition derbies, pumpkins launched from cannons and rivals who live on nearby Dog Killer Ridge.

Joe Weinstock said Porter Ridge isn’t designed to make Hoosiers look bad.

“When people see the show, I believe they’re going to come away feeling pretty darn good,” said Joe Weinstock, an Oklahoma native who worked for MTV Networks, Spike TV and Gurney Productions before being hired by Discovery in 2012.

“It has a lot of heart. In the end, these neighbors who all unite and live on Porter Ridge Road love each other.”

When MTV aired Buckwild, a Jersey Shore successor set in rural West Virginia, the 2013 show wasn’t well-received in its home state.

“This show plays to ugly, inaccurate stereotypes about the people of West Virginia,” Senator Joe Manchin said in December, before the first episode aired.

Buckwild ceased production following a cast member’s death. Shain Gandee died of accidental carbon monoxide poisoning in April after stranding his Ford Bronco in deep mud.

Duck Dynasty, meanwhile, is a runaway hit. The premiere of its third season on cable network A&E attracted 8.6 million viewers in February, making it the year’s No. 1 “nonfiction” cable series.

Porter Ridge will air on 12 consecutive Tuesdays, and the show is expected to receive promotion throughout Shark Week – the signature Discovery Channel programming that begins August 4.

Joe Weinstock said the likelihood of a second season of Porter Ridge should be known after a month of episodes air.

“I feel like this is something really special,” Joe Weinstock said.

“It’s bottled and packaged like no other show you’ve seen.”

Phil Robertson reveals he won’t do Duck Dynasty much longer

Duck Dynasty‘s patriarch Phil Robertson may soon be ready to hang up his hunting whistle for good.

In a recent interview with Parade magazine, Phil Robertson hints that he’ll likely leave the A&E hit reality show in the not-too-distant future.

Asked how much longer he plans to be involved, the Duck Commander founder replies: “Not long.”

But that doesn’t mean the series will end.

“I think it’ll go on without me,” Phil Robertson muses.

Since its premiere in the spring of 2012, Duck Dynasty has accumulated millions of fans, many of whom flock to the Robertson family’s Duck Commander warehouse just to catch a glimpse of the stars.

“I told Missy, my wife, the only person I’d stand in line for is God Almighty,” Phil Robertson’s son Jase tells Parade.

“<<You made the universe? All right, I’ll get in line!>>”

Jase Robertson appears on the show with his father, Uncle Si, and brothers Willie and Jep, all of whom have long, full beards. But come August, when Season 4 premieres on A&E, there will be another face on the show – eldest brother, clean-shaven Alan, who recently rejoined the business.

Doing the show has brought the family “a whole lot closer,” Willie Robertson tells Parade.

“It’s probably the opposite of most reality shows. And nobody gets a big head because we’re all doing it together.”

In fact, fame doesn’t seem to have changed the group much at all. While some episodes feature situations suggested by producers, Jase Robertson insists they never do anything out of character.

“They come up with ideas, but I get to be myself in those ideas,” he tells Parade.

“One day when we were gonna play golf, a wardrobe person brought me a pair off knickers,” he recalls.

“I guess they thought that would be funny. But I don’t wear knickers. They said, <<A&E wants you to>>. I was like, <<I don’t care!>>”

Willie Robertson sensed the show could be good for business, but he had one hesitation: the name, Duck Dynasty.

“I thought, <<That sounds like a Chinese food place!>>” Willie Robertson  quips.

Libya: Mass jailbreak from Benghazi prison

More than 1,000 inmates have escaped from a jail in the Libyan city of Benghazi.

A security official from the jail told the AP news agency that most of the escapees were facing serious charges.

Benghazi is one of the most unstable parts of post-revolution Libya. Last year the US ambassador and three other Americans were killed there.

It is not clear whether the jailbreak was part of ongoing political unrest in the city.

Earlier protesters attacked offices linked to the Muslim Brotherhood following the assassination of the prominent political activist Abdelsalam al-Mismari.

They stormed offices of the Justice and Construction Party, the Brotherhood’s political wing.

A retired air-force colonel and a senior police officer were also shot dead on Friday in Benghazi, in the latest in a series of targeted killings of security personnel.

Libya’s government is struggling to control armed groups nearly two years after Colonel Muammar Gaddafi was toppled.

Vladimir Putin catches huge pike on Siberia fishing trip

Russian President Vladimir Putin stripped to his waist and landed a 21 kg pike during a trip to Siberia.

Vladimir Putin was joined on the trip by PM Dmitry Medvedev, in a clear bid to prove Russia’s top two remain unified despite reports of in-house tension.

Dressed in camouflage and sporting a slouch hat, Vladimir Putin manned the helm aboard a small fishing boat before taking a turn casting a line.

State television showed Vladimir Putin laughing in amazement as he dragged the pike onto the jetty.

He then turned to the cameras and kissed his prize on the gills.

“It was very interesting relaxation. Putin and Medvedev socialized very warmly, talked and went swimming,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told state television.

While the cameras were still rolling, Vladimir Putin also took his top of, in his latest show of peck-flexing machismo.

Vladimir Putin has never shied away from self-publicity, particularly in bolstering his hardman reputation.

He was famously pictured in 2007 while on holiday in southern Siberia’s Tuva region swimming, hunting and fishing with no shirt on to show off his masculine physique.

Vladimir Putin is also a keen jodu player and has been photographed flying helicopters, driving formula 1 racing cars and shooting guns on a regular basis.

Sydney Leathers Inside Edition interview: “Anthony Weiner and Huma Abedin have more of a business relationship than a marriage”

Sydney Leathers, the alleged virtual mistress of New York mayoral candidate Anthony Weiner, gave her first interview with CBS’s Inside Edition.

In the interview Sydney Leathers, 23, cried as she apologized to Anthony Weiner’s wife Huma Abedin “for the pain she probably feels” but says she thought the political power couple had “more of an arrangement, or a business relationship, than a marriage”.

Sydney Leathers hypothesizes that Huma Abedin’s own ambitions may have played a role in her staying with the mayoral candidate after his texting scandal in 2011.

“I do think that was probably part of it, for the power, for the fame, for the stature,” Sydney Leathers said.

The renewed discussion about Anthony Weiner’s recent indiscretions was prompted by Sydney Leather’s decision to release screen grabs of their conversations to gossip site The Dirty as well as pictures of the mayoral candidate, all of which were exchanged more than one year after he resigned from Congress.

Sydney Leathers first contacted Anthony Weiner in her role as a political blogger, right after the previous texting scandal, to lambast him for his actions.

Anthony Weiner never responded to the message, and it wasn’t until a year later that they finally contacted, “poking” each other on a social networking site.

From there, their relationship turned dirty, escalating to phone s** sessions twice a week from June to November 2012.

Sydney Leathers called the affair “dark and dirty” and that new-father Anthony Weiner was using their online trysts as a way of “acting out”.

But she also said that they truly loved each other, and that Anthony Weiner even offered to buy the Indiana-based Sydney Leathers an apartment in Chicago so they could spend time together when he was in town.

“I’ve found the perfect woman. Gorgeous, s**y and like a bit crazy,” Anthony Weiner wrote in one exchange.

“I think it was a fantasy thing for both of us,” she said.

Anthony Weiner even got jealous of her other online relationships.

“Me being hit on by other men really upset him,” Sydney Leathers said.

“We were Facebook friends, so he could see if men were commenting on photos of me, or telling me that I was pretty.

“Really minor things like that really bothered him.”

Their relationship took a turn for the worse in the lead up to the New York City mayoral race, when Anthony Weiner contacted Sydney Leathers and asked her delete their conversations.

“Do me a solid,” Anthony Weiner texted Sydney Leathers four months ago.

“Can you hard delete all our chats here.”

“Obviously I knew that he wanted me to erase any evidence of out conversations,” Sydney Leathers said.

“Because that was around the time I knew that he was going to run for mayor.”

For Sydney Leathers, things turned scary when a man claiming to be Anthony Weiner’s “brother” contacted her “to see if she was going to be a problem”.

Anthony Weiner’s brother Jason denies any contact with Sydney Leathers, but a Facebook message from Weiner to Leathers asks her if they’re “ok” after a conversation with his brother.

“My brother e-mailed me asking about you and whether I pissed you off. he told me to look at your feed, but nothing seems about me. maybe he was just tallying up pro and con comments and took one of your pithy posts as being something bad about me,” Anthony Weiner wrote.

In the interview, Sydney Leathers said she had initially been attracted to Anthony Weiner because of his politics, but had since seen another side to him.

“He’s not who I thought he was,” she said.

When asked what she would like to say to him now, Sydney Leathers responded: “Stop lying, stop embarrassing his wife, and get help.”

Sydney Leathers was spotted out on Thursday for the first time since disclosing the mayoral candidates indiscretions. She wore an eye-catching blue dress and towering wedge heels as she grabbed coffee in Los Angeles on Thursday.

Laughing as she chatted on the phone and visited Starbucks, she seemed unfazed by the political storm created by her revelations of her six-month virtual affair with the married politician.

The Inside Edition interview came as her high school friends described her as someone who was always desperate for fame just as it emerged she had got herself an agent and was hoping to make $100,000 by selling her story.

Sydney Leathers hoped Anthony Weiner would be her ticket out of “Conservative Hell” Indiana and alleges he promised to put her up in a condo in Chicago and a possible job at Politico, they said.

She lives with her machinist father in Princeton and had a difficult relationship with her thrice-married mother since they split six years ago.

Since the revelations, Anthony Weiner has admitted that he started three different virtual relationships with women after he resigned from Congress following his Twitter texting scandal in 2011.

And earlier this week, Anthony Weiner and his wife Huma Abedin held a joint press conference declaring their dedication to both one another and the campaign.

Afterwards, Anthony Weiner sent an email to supporters saying that the bid for New York City’s mayor was “too important” to give up over “embarrassing personal things”.

Rivals, newspaper editorial pages and former New York congressional colleagues urged Democrat Anthony Weiner to quit after he acknowledged exchanging raunchy messages and photos online after he had resigned from Congress for similar behavior.

Anthony Weiner’s strongest rivals in the polls, Christine Quinn and Bill Thompson, criticized him but didn’t directly call on him to quit.

Francisco Jose Garzon Amo: Spanish train driver accused of reckless manslaughter

Francisco Jose Garzon Amo, the driver of Spanish train that derailed near Santiago de Compostela killing 78 people, has been accused of “reckless manslaughter”, Interior Minister Jorge Fernandez Diaz has said.

Jorge Fernandez Diaz said Francisco Jose Garzon Amo, who was slightly hurt in Wednesday’s accident, had been taken to a police station.

Francisco Jose Garzon Amo is suspected of driving too fast on a bend. Reports say the train was travelling at more than double the speed limit at the time of the crash.

The 52-year-old driver has refused to answer questions.

At least 130 people were taken to hospital after the accident near the north-western city of Santiago de Compostela.

Thirty-two people were seriously injured, including children.

People from several nationalities were among the wounded, including five Americans and one Briton. One American was among the dead.

Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, who hails from the city of the crash, declared three days of official mourning on Thursday.

A judge was due to interview Francisco Jose Garzon Amo on Sunday, the interior minister said.

“He has been detained for the alleged crimes of reckless manslaughter,” Jorge Fernandez Diaz said.

“There are reasonable grounds to consider that he may have been responsible for what happened, which must be established by a judge and the investigation.”

The driver had been under police surveillance in hospital since the accident but he was discharged on Saturday and taken to a police station.

Police said Francisco Jose Garzon Amo had refused to answer their questions while he was in medical care.

State rail operator Renfe said the train came off the tracks about 3 or 4 km (2-2.5 miles) from Santiago de Compostela station at 20:41 local time on Wednesday.

The accident occurred on the express route between the capital, Madrid, and the port city of Ferrol on the Galician coast, with 218 passengers on board and four crew.

Footage captured by a security camera shows the train crashing as it hurtled round a bend.

The train’s data recording “black box” is with the judge in charge of the investigation.

It is unclear whether anyone else is subject to investigation.

Renfe president Julio Gomez Pomar was quoted by El Mundo newspaper as saying the driver had 30 years of experience with the company and had been operating trains on the line for more than a year.

Gomez Pomar said the train had no technical problems.

The derailment happened on the eve of Santiago de Compostela’s main annual festival where thousands of Christian pilgrims were expected to flock to the city in honor of St James.

The local tourism board cancelled all festivities as the city went into mourning.

According to official figures, the crash is one of the worst rail disasters in Spanish history.

Five or more cups of tea a day lowers risk of advanced prostate cancer by a third

0

A new research shows that drinking five or more cups of tea a day lowers the risk of advanced prostate cancer by a third.

Men who drink five or more cups daily have a 33% lower risk of developing stage IV prostate cancer, scientists found.

They also have a 25% reduced risk of reaching stage II, compared with those who drink just one cup a day.

Drinking five or more cups of tea a day lowers the risk of advanced prostate cancer by a third

Stage II is where the tumor has grown inside the prostate gland but not spread. By stage IV the cancer has typically spread to the lymph nodes, bones or liver.

It is believed naturally occurring compounds in tea called flavonoids inhibit cancer cells from forming tumors.

The good news is that it doesn’t matter if you have milk, sugar, sweetener or lemon in your tea. The health benefits are not reduced.

Scientists in the Netherlands analyzed data on 58,279 men and found 3,362 cases of prostate  cancer, including 1,164 advanced cancers.

By finding out how much tea the men drank and what foods they ate, they were able to compare their lack of flavonoid intake with their health record.

Dr. Milan Geybels, lead researcher at Maastricht University, said: “We had data on tumour stage for most cases which made it possible to stratify data against the stage of the disease.

“Our study included a large number of advanced stage prostate cancers.”

One cup of tea provides about 150-200mg of flavonoids.

RealToothFairies website slammed for cashing on childhood’s imaginary figures

A recently launched website that sells “real” Tooth Fairy toys has been slammed for commercializing a character that once existed solely in children’s imaginations.

RealToothFairies, which features six Tooth Fairies with Barbie-like features, lets children buy toys and accessories, as well as request “Magic Letters” from their personalized fairies.

While the website markets itself as a fun and educational tool for young children, some have branded it as “sleazy” for hijacking the one fictional character who had escaped commercialization.

The interactive website, launched this month by Hasbro former vice president Howard Bollinger, lets children and parents log in and navigate various tooth-themed games, activities and products.

A shop for “earthie girls”, the term the site uses to refer to young children, features a huge variety of books, jewelry, costumes, downloadable songs and party decorations.

But while children used to think $1 to $5 under the pillow was a generous gift for losing a tooth, Real Tooth Fairy sets the monetary standard far higher.

RealToothFairies, which features six Tooth Fairies with Barbie-like features, lets children buy toys and accessories from their personalized fairies

The Birthday Party Collection, for example, which includes party favors like ten rainbow wands, 12 pink cups, 20 balloons and 20 pink plates, costs a whopping $379.99.

VIP memberships to the website, which let girls access more games and products, also cost a fee.

While the site is aimed at young girls aged five to ten, the cartoon representations of Tooth Fairies appear far older, with tiny waists, revealing outfits and make-up that liken them to Barbies.

What’s more, a leaked video of the Real Tooth Fairy LLC’s pitch to investors demonstrates the company’s perception of young girls as merely a profitable marketing opportunity.

In a transcript of the video posted on CommercialFreeChildhood.org, a voiceover says:  “With a target audience of 10million U.S. girls ages six to ten who lose 20 teeth, that translates to 200 million Tooth Fairy moments.”

The “cha-ching” sound of a cash register is heard in the background, before the voiceover adds: “And biology guarantees that will never stop.”

Campaign for Commercial Free Childhood, also known as CCFC, has launched an initiative to stop the toy company from “[cashing] in on one of childhood’s most treasured imaginary figures”.

CCFC director Dr. Susan Linn said in a statement: “It’s bad enough that so many commercial characters marketed to little girls are s***alized.

“It’s especially egregious to s***alize a childhood icon that has only existed in children’s imagination.”

Critics of the website have taken to Twitter to voice their concern.
