Kaesong industrial park reopened in North Korea after five months

South Korean workers have crossed the North Korean border to return to the Kaesong industrial park, five months after work was halted amid high political tension.

Trucks and cars began crossing the border into North Korea at exactly 08:00 a.m. local time.

More than 800 South Koreans were due to cross to the jointly-run centre for what is being called a trial restart.

The zone, just inside North Korea, is home to 123 South Korean factories that employ more than 50,000 North Koreans.

It is the last functioning inter-Korean joint project and a key source of revenue for Pyongyang.

North Korea withdrew all of its workers in April, as ties between the two Koreas deteriorated in the wake of Pyongyang’s February 12 nuclear test.

Reopening the complex has taken months of negotiation.

South Korea’s Unification Ministry said a total of 820 managers and workers planned to cross into the complex on Monday, with 400 to stay there overnight.

They will be inspecting production facilities to assess how quickly a full restart can be implemented after five months of inactivity.

The restart is being described as a trial but more than half of the South Korean companies had asked North Korean employees to report for work, the ministry said.

Negotiations on resuming operations at the complex faltered for weeks on South Korea’s insistence that safeguards must be in place to prevent any future unilateral shut-down of the site by North Korea.

But the two sides have now set up a joint management committee to run operations at Kaesong, which last week set a restart date for the complex.

The committee has also reached agreement on smoother access to the site for South Koreans by expanding permitted border crossing times and is negotiating about improving communications there.

The Koreas have also agreed to open the site to foreign investors – a move seen as making it harder for North Korea to unilaterally close the complex again.

South Korean firms will be exempt from taxes for the rest of the year, to offset losses incurred while the complex was closed.

But some local businessmen remain worried about the risks of doing business with Pyongyang.

“Honestly, I still feel a bit nervous, because you never know whether the North will change its mind in the future,” a textile company manager told the French news agency AFP.

“Who knows if a crisis like this won’t happen again?” he said.

The shutdown was the first for the Kaesong complex since it was opened more than a decade ago.

It came during a period of very high tension on the Korean peninsula.

The February 12 nuclear test led to expanded UN sanctions which, along with an annual US-South Korean joint military drill, angered Pyongyang.

It threatened attacks on multiple targets in the region, prompting warnings – and displays of high-tech military hardware – from the US.

Tensions have eased somewhat in recent weeks, however.

North Korea and South Korea have also recently agreed to hold the first reunion of families separated by the division of the peninsula after the 1950-53 Korean War later this month. It will be the first such reunion in 10 years.

Canada Dry Hot Ginger Ale: Coca-Cola launches first ever hot carbonated beverage

0

Coca-Cola is offering the first ever hot carbonated beverage with warmed-in-the-can Canada Dry ginger ale.

The company hopes to profit from the popularity of spicy autumn beverages with its new hot ginger ale in a can.

Canada Dry Hot Ginger Ale will be dispensed pre-heated from high-tech Japanese vending machines starting October 21.

The ginger, apple, and cinnamon concoction is the product of years of research into finding a way to keep the drink carbonated while it warms. It’s also one of a spattering of warmed-in-the-can food and drinks now hitting the market in the U.S. and abroad.

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Japan is as obsessed with fall-themed beverages as Americans.

Like the U.S. with its pumpkin-flavored hot beverages that are offered seasonally at countless coffee and food sellers like Starbuck’s, spicy beverages are a hit in Japan during the colder months.

The orange, red, and yellow design of the can betrays its harvest-themed contents.

The can will be dispensed pre-heated, but somehow still bubbling. The Coca-Cola Company has worked for the last three years to maintain the drink’s carbonation during the heating process and their success has allowed them to introduce this, their first hot and fizzy beverage.

Coca-Cola already offers warmed drinks of the non-fizzy variety. Its Georgia Coffee brand vending machines dispense canned hot tea and coffee.

While the 120 Yen ($1.20) ginger ale won’t be available stateside in the foreseeable future. Japan doesn’t have the patent on warmed-in-the-can beverages.

In the US, companies like Hot Can Inc. are selling soups and beverages that are actually warmed by the can.

According to the Hot Can website, the company has created “a revolutionary self-heating smart packaging for the global beverage market”. They offer tea, coffee, hot chocolate and soups that are heated internally via a chemical reaction.

Jennifer O’Neill: Lady Gaga’s personal assistant claims she had to flush singer’s toilet

In a landmark legal case, Lady Gaga is set to redraw the rules of employment, after a ferocious spat with best friend Jennifer O’Neill, who became her personal assistant.

In testimony prepared for a forthcoming trial, Lady Gaga tells in her own words how she reigns as “Queen of the Universe every day” – and why no one should be paid overtime.

The court papers, obtained by The Mail on Sunday, show how Lady Gaga, real name Stefani Germanotta, argues a 9-to-5 job may last 24 hours a day but in return, staff get to sleep between Egyptian cotton sheets, eat caviar, relax on luxury yachts and “party all night”.

Lady Gaga, 27, has submitted the expletive-filled 200-page witness statement that explains in her own words why her entourage get  perks instead of cash for extra  hours worked.

The singer says: “It’s actually based on a bubbly, good heart. I am quite wonderful to everyone that works for me. I am going to tell you exactly what ******* happened, so that the judge can read on this transcript exactly what’s going on, which is my ex-best friend is a ******* hood rat who is suing me for money that she didn’t earn. The job was essentially a favor, and Jennifer was majorly unqualified for it.”

Jennifer O’Neill, 42, is claiming she worked 7,168 hours of unpaid overtime while being employed by the star for 13 months and is demanding $370,000, plus damages. She claims she was at Lady Gaga’s “beck and call”, responsible for her “grunt work” as the singer’s career took off in 2010.

Jennifer O’Neill, who was paid $1,500 a week, said she often had to share a bed with the star who hated sleeping alone, had to rub the corns on her feet and was woken up because the star could not be bothered to get up to change a DVD.

If Lady Gaga loses the case, due in court in New York on November 4, the verdict will have huge ramifications for entertainment-industry employees because, as Gaga herself says, “overtime payments are not usual in my line of work”.

A source close to the case said: “She thinks nothing of splashing out huge chunks of money on selfish things but when it comes to looking after her staff and paying a fair wage for their time, she is neglectful. It’s double standards. Her selfishness can be breathtaking at times.”

Amanda Knox reveals why she will not attend Italy retrial

0

Amanda Knox has revealed she will not attend a retrial in Italy because she will forever be seen as “the dark lady who decided Meredith had to die”.

Amanda Knox, 26, claims her presence animates the courtroom, detracting from the evidence.

It follows claims by her co-accused and former boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito that Italian police tried to bribe him into framing her.

Since overturning a 26-year jail sentence, Amanda Knox has denied any involvement in the 2007 murder of Leeds University student Meredith Kercher, who was found with her throat slashed in their shared flat in Perugia.

Now living in Seattle, she refuses to answer calls to revisit the evidence at a court Florence.

Amanda Knox told the New York Post nobody in the Perugia court cared about what really happened to Meredith Kercher.

Amanda Knox has revealed she will not attend a retrial in Italy because she will forever be seen as the dark lady who decided Meredith had to die

Branding the court room a “circus”, Amanda Knox claims everybody was more concerned about what she was wearing, how she did her hair or whether she smiled at her parents than the legal proceedings.

In an interview with the Sun on Sunday, Amanda Knox said: “The fact is that my presence has always been a distraction in the courtroom.

“Every single movement I made, every gesture, every facial expression, was the focus of scrutiny and distracted from the evidence in the case.”

Amanda Knox told the paper she had been portrayed during the first trial as “the dark lady…who decided Meredith was better than me and had to die”.

“Projecting that image justifies in their minds that I would be capable of committing a crime so heinous as this and therefore validates the guilty verdict in the first trial,” she said.

But, she added, finance was also a problem: “If it were possible to go to the court and not have to deal with the issues of being afraid of being thrown back in prison again for an arbitrary reason, or for being able to financially afford it, absolutely I would want to be there.”

Italy’s highest criminal court, the Court of Cassation, ruled in March that an appeal court in Florence must re-hear the case against Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito for the murder of 21-year-old Meredith Kercher.

Raffaele Sollecito is due to face a retrial on September 30. But Amanda Knox’s lawyer revealed last month that she will not return to Italy for the new trial.

They were found guilty in December 2009 of murdering Meredith Kercher, with Amanda Knox sentenced to 26 years in prison and Raffaele Sollecito 25.

But, after an 11-month appeal in a Perugia court, both convictions were thrown out in October 2011.

Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito have consistently protested their innocence and claim they were not even in the apartment on the night Meredith Kercher died.

LeBron James marries Savannah Brinson in San Diego ceremony

0

LeBron James married his longtime girlfriend Savannah Brinson in a lavish San Diego ceremony on Saturday.

LeBron James, 28, and his new wife held their ceremony at the Grand Del Mar hotel less than three months after he won his second straight NBA title with Miami Heat.

A ceremony was said to have been held in the hotel’s Capella Chapel at 4.30 p.m., with celebrations lasting three days.

The high school sweethearts, who have two children, announced their engagement in January last year.

Guests, including LeBron James’s teammate Dwayne Wade, Beyoncé and Jay-Z, were welcomed to the wedding on Friday, with a barbecue and the festivities are expected to last until a farewell brunch on Sunday.

Other guests including Dwayne Wade’s girlfriend Gabrielle Union, and NBA players Chris Paul and Carmelo Anthony, according to People.

Hotel staff and pretty much everyone involved with the wedding were asked to sign non-disclosure agreements, but one tell-tale sign about the venue is about to host something out of the ordinary is the large tent that’s been erected outside.

The extravaganza was organized by celebrity wedding planner Preston Bailey, who also oversaw internet entrepreneur Sean Parker’s $10 million ‘Lord of the Rings’-themed wedding to Alexandra Lenas back in June.

LeBron James’ big day was expected be a slightly more muted affair. The guest list was expected to only number in the hundreds, rather than the thousands that have attended some NBA All-Star’s nuptials.

“He cut the list down because he didn’t want to have 1,000 people at the wedding,” a source told the New York Post.

This weekend’s wedding also clashes with Yom Kippur, the Jewish day of atonement.

Syria hails chemical weapons deal as a victory

A Syrian minister hails the US-Russia agreement on destroying the country’s chemical weapons as a “victory” that averts war.

The framework document says Syria must provide full details of its stockpile within a week – with the chemical arsenal eliminated by mid-2014.

If Syria fails to comply, the deal could be enforced by a UN resolution with the use of force as a last resort.

The US had threatened to attack Syria which it blames for a chemical attack in August which killed hundreds.

President Bashar al-Assad’s government denies the allegations and has accused the rebels of carrying out the attack.

Syria recently agreed to join the global Chemical Weapons Convention, and the UN said it would come under the treaty from October 14.

The framework deal was announced on Saturday after three days of talks in Geneva by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US Secretary of State John Kerry.

“We welcome the agreement,” Syrian Reconciliation Minister Ali Haidar told Russian news agency Ria Novosti, giving his country’s first reaction.

“On the one hand, it helps Syria come out of the crisis and, on the other, it helps avoid the war against Syria depriving those who wanted to launch it of arguments to do so,” Ali Haidar said.

“It’s a victory for Syria achieved thanks to our Russian friends.”

China, France, the UK, the UN, the Arab League and NATO have all expressed satisfaction at the agreement.

Costa Concordia salvage due to begin on Monday

Costa Concordia salvage will go ahead on Monday, Italian officials have confirmed.

The Civil Protection agency said the sea and weather conditions were right for the salvage attempt.

Engineers have never tried to move such a huge ship so close to land.

Thirty-two people died when the cruise ship hit rocks off the Tuscan island of Giglio in January 2012. It has been lying on its side ever since.

Five people have already been convicted of manslaughter over the disaster, and the ship’s captain, Francesco Schettino, is currently on trial accused of manslaughter and abandoning ship.

The salvage operation is due to begin at 06:00 on Monday, and it is being described as one of the largest and most daunting ever attempted.

Costa Concordia salvage will go ahead on Monday
Costa Concordia salvage will go ahead on Monday

The head of the operation, Nick Sloane, told AFP news agency that it was now or never for the Costa Concordia, because the hull was gradually weakening and might not survive another winter.

Engineers will try to roll the ship up using cables and the weight of water contained in huge metal boxes welded to the ship’s sides – a process called parbuckling.

This procedure must be done very slowly to prevent further damage to the hull, which has spent more than 18 months partially submerged in 50ft of water and fully exposed to the elements.

More boxes will then be attached to the other side, and the water will be replaced with air to add buoyancy, allowing the vessel to be towed away and broken up for scrap.

If the operation goes wrong, environmentalists warn that toxic substances could leak out into the sea.

For the people of Giglio, the salvage operation will be an important moment – and a special prayer was said during Sunday Mass.

The small island’s economy depends hugely on tourism and the presence of the wreck has discouraged visitors.

The salvage project has so far cost more than 600 million euros ($800 million) and could cost a lot more by the time the operation is complete.

UN Food Wastage Footprint: A third of food produced worldwide goes to waste

A recent United Nations report reveals that the food the world wastes produces more greenhouse gas emissions than any country except for China and the US.

Every year about a third of all food for human consumption, around 1.3 billion tonnes, is wasted, along with all the energy, water and chemicals needed to produce it and dispose of it.

Almost 30% of the world’s farmland, and a volume of water equivalent to the annual discharge of the River Volga, are in effect being used in vain.

In its report, released this week, entitled The Food Wastage Footprint, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) estimated that the carbon footprint of wasted food was equivalent to 3.3 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide per year.

If it were a country, it would be the world’s third biggest emitter after China and the United States, suggesting that more efficient food use could contribute substantially to global efforts to cut greenhouse gases to limit global warming.

The food the world wastes produces more greenhouse gas emissions than any country except for China and the US
The food the world wastes produces more greenhouse gas emissions than any country except for China and the US

In the industrialized world, much of the waste comes from consumers buying too much and throwing away what they do not eat. In developing countries, it is mainly the result of inefficient farming and a lack of proper storage facilities.

“Food wastage reduction would not only avoid pressure on scarce natural resources but also decrease the need to raise food production by 60% in order to meet the 2050 population demand,” the FAO said.

The report suggested improving communication between producers and consumers to manage the supply chain more efficiently, as well as investing more in harvesting, cooling and packaging methods.

It also said consumers in the developed world should be encouraged to serve smaller portions and make more use of leftovers. Businesses should give surplus food to charities and develop alternatives to dumping organic waste in landfill.

The FAO estimated the cost of the wasted food, excluding fish and seafood, at about $750 billion a year, based on producer prices.

The wasted food consumes about 250 cubic km of water and takes up about 1.4  billion hectares – much of it diverse natural habitat that has been cleared to make it arable.

Colorado floods: Death toll rises to five as more than 500 people are missing

More than 500 people are missing and at least 4 people have died, with another victim believed to be dead, after flash floods hit Colorado.

Many residents are still stranded in their homes as rescue workers try to reach them. Boulder county officials fear rescue attempts will be hampered by the extra 4in of rain due on Sunday.

Authorities who still haven’t reached all the stranded victims of floods in northeastern Colorado are bracing for a new round of storms on Sunday.

Already it is estimated that it will cost $150 million to repair more than 100 miles of road and at least 20 bridges that have been washed away.

County transportation director George Gerstle told CNN the repair bill is likely to be 10 to 15 the annual budget.

A sheriff’s office spokesman said hundreds of people were unaccounted for, but added that some residents may have reached safety but not been able to contact relatives to tell them.

Boulder County Sheriff Joe Pelle said authorities had to be “realistic” about the chances that the death toll will rise.

With the rain never seeming to end and the waters continuing to rise, more than 4,000 people near Boulder, Colorado, have been evacuated as nearby Milliken has been surrounded by water and turned into an island, according to reports.

More than 500 people are missing and at least 4 people have died, with another victim believed to be dead, after flash floods hit Colorado

The reality of what is becoming a long-term disaster is setting in, flooding has affected parts of a 4,500-square-mile area almost the size of Connecticut.

In the most recent developments, people are stranded in Milliken after the main road out of town was washed away by raging floodwaters, according to CBS Denver. As the devastating rapids rise, they wash away more of the road, and flood ever closer to even more homes.

“The fire department said Milliken is an island but I found a way out,” Jorge Garza told the station.

A CBS Denver helicopter flying over the town spotted a family of three and their dog being rescued from menacing waters via a motorized raft.

“[Milliken] has turned into a lake with campers, fields and cars submerged,” the station further reported.

172 people are unaccounted for, Boulder County officials told KDVR.

As rescuers broke through to flood-ravaged Colorado towns, they issued a stern warning Saturday to anyone thinking of staying behind: “Leave now or be prepared to endure weeks without electricity, running water and basic supplies.”

Authorities made clear that residents who chose not to leave might not get another chance for a while.

“We’re not trying to force anyone from their home. We’re not trying to be forceful, but we’re trying to be very factual and definitive about the consequences of their decision, and we hope that they will come down,” Boulder County Sheriff Joe Pelle said.

Noel and Liam Gallagher in secret talks about re-forming Oasis

Gallagher brothers, Noel and Liam, are reportedly in top-secret talks about re-forming Oasis.

Noel and Liam Gallagher have been approached by promoters willing to pay huge sums for them to play two shows to mark 20 years since their debut album.

And their answer could match the album’s title: Definitely Maybe.

Noel and Liam Gallagher could be tempted, despite Noel once saying the band wouldn’t re-form “even if all  the starving children in the world depended on it”.

Talks are said to be fragile but the package on the table may prove irresistible to Liam Gallagher.

Liam Gallagher, 40, needs to pay for £500-an-hour lawyer Fiona Shackleton, who is handling his divorce from Nicole Appleton.

Oasis split in 2009 after fighting between the brothers. Since then Liam Gallagher’s new band, Beady Eye, have had only a fraction of the success of Oasis.

If the concerts do go ahead, they are expected to be staged next August at Knebworth.

When Oasis played there in 1996 they sold 330,000 tickets – the fastest-selling in British rock history.

A source said: “If the gigs happened, they would perform Definitely Maybe from start to finish.”

Liam and Noel Gallagher have not been on stage together since a dramatic showdown at a Paris gig in 2009 when Liam reportedly smashed one of Noel’s guitars.

Noel Gallagher, 46, subsequently quit the band saying: “I simply could not go on working with Liam a day longer.”

He has since fronted his band High Flying Birds.

But in June, Liam Gallagher hinted there could be a reunion.

Liam Gallagher said: “I’d do it for now, but if someone’s going to drop  a load of f**king money, I’d do it for that too.”

North Jersey Media Group Inc. is suing Sarah Palin and her political action committee for a copyright infringement over the use of an iconic 9/11 photo.

The publisher is suing the former Alaska governer for posting a copy of the image on Sarah Palin’s SarahPAC website and her personal Facebook page without permission.

The photo depicts three New York City firefighters hoisting an American flag among the rubble at the World Trade Center after the 2001 attacks.

The lawsuit filed Friday in Manhattan asks a federal court to stop SarahPAC from using the picture. It also seeks unspecified damages.

NJMG publishes The Record and Herald News newspapers as well as 40 weekly community papers, a dozen magazines and two websites.

The indelible Ground Zero image depicting soot-covered first responders was taken by The Record photographer Thomas E. Franklin.

According to the lawsuit, the copyright on the photo was registered in October 2001, Newsday reported.

A year later, the U.S. Postal Service used the image on a stamp called “Heroes”, according to Bloomberg Businessweek.

The NJMG federal suit says that by using the picture “to promote Sarah Palin and to raise money for SarahPAC” the 2008 vice-presidential candidate has “irreparably damaged” the newspaper company.

The photo was pulled from Sarah Palin’s Facebook page Friday, according to The Alaska Dispatch.

It had drawn more than 140,000 “likes” and some 1,500 comments.

How Vladimir Putin beat Republican Dana Rohrabacher in drunken arm-wrestling match

Vladimir Putin and a group of American politicians had an arm-wrestling match a few years after the fall of the Berlin wall.

In an interview on Southern California Public Radio this week, Representative Dana Rohrabacher, a California republican, talked about the time he met Vladimir Putin and was matched up against him in an impromptu arm-wrestling competition.

Vladimir Putin was part of a delegation of young Russian political leaders who traveled to California in the early 1990s.

At the time, Vladimir Putin was just the deputy mayor of St Petersburg but Dana Rohrabacher already knew he must be more important since he had his own bodyguard.

They met with Dana Rohrabacher, a former speechwriter for President Ronald Reagan, and other politicians including Scooter Libby.

Dana Rohrabacher, invited the delegation to play a game of American football over the weekend and Vladimir Putin and a few others agreed.

Vladimir Putin and a group of American politicians had an arm-wrestling match a few years after the fall of the Berlin wall

The teams were mixed with both Russians and Americans so no one country won.

Afterwards the men went to drink at an Irish pub and that’s when things got interesting.

“We were having a little but too much to drink I guess, but anyway we all started arguing about who won the Cold War,” Dana Rohrabacher said.

“And so we decided to settle it like men do when they’ve had too much to drink in the pub.”

They started setting up arm-wrestling matches and Dana Rohrabacher was matched up against the future president of the Russian Federation.

“He’s a little guy, but boy I’ll tell ya, he put me down in a millisecond,” Dana Rohrabacher said of Vladimir Putin, a former KGB officer.

“He is tough. It’s just being you know, muscles are just unbelievable.”

But the Americans didn’t completely lose that day.

Dana Rohrabacher says his friend was matched up against Vladimir Putin’s large bodyguard, and the bodyguard surprisingly lost.

That match taught Dana Rohrabacher something about Vladimir Putin that he believes translates to the current Russian intervention in Syria’s chemical weapons arsenal.

“He’s a tough guy and he’s supposed to be a tough guy, and that’s what the Russian people want, but there’s no reason that we shouldn’t try to work with him,” Dana Rohrabacher said.

Soldier N: SAS assassinated Princess Diana by shining light into her driver’s face

Soldier N claimed Princess Diana was killed after a member of British SAS unit shone a light in her driver’s face causing him to crash.

The SAS soldier is said to have made the astonishing allegations to his wife after taking Prince William on an advanced driving course in 2008.

Scotland Yard reportedly decided to review the historic case 16 years after Princess Diana’s death, after interviewing the woman who insists her former husband was telling the truth last month.

The soldier’s wife, who is now divorced from him, is understood to have told police last month her husband had been teaching Prince William how to drive with SAS colleagues when he made the claims.

“We were talking about it…and I said it was sad that his mum wasn’t there to see it.

“Then he said one of the guys was responsible for the accident, for the death of Diana. I was shocked. I believed what he said,” she told the Sunday Mirror.

When the woman quizzed her husband about his theory he reportedly told her the SAS had been following Princess Diana and Dodi Al Fayed, who also died in the accident, and that a light was shone into the Paris tunnel before their car crashed.

Soldier N told his former wife, who revealed the conversation to her own mother years later, “an order is an order” when asked who would possibly have carried out the murder.

The unidentified woman is said to have told members of Scotland Yard the “hit” had been instructed by individuals within royal circles who did not approve of Princess Diana’s relationship with al Fayed.

She alleged a white car and motorbike were involved in the plot which enlisted the services of one of Soldier N’s former SAS colleagues.

Soldier N claimed Princess Diana was killed after a member of British SAS unit shone a light in her driver’s face causing him to crash

Dodi Al Fayed’s father, Mohammed Al Fayed has always asserted the pair’s deaths were the result of a planned murder at the hands of the British Establishment, and similarly claims a white Fiat was involved in the crash but has never been traced.

The woman and her mother reportedly met with detectives last month including a senior officer who worked on the original Operation Paget investigation into Princess Diana’s death.

The two women offered convincing accounts of what caused the 1997 crash which killed Princess Diana alongside Dodi al Fayed and driver Henri Paul in a Paris underpass.

Soldier N’s former wife insisted he had made the claims two years before the break up of their marriage at a time when he confided in her with full trust.

When asked by officers why she hadn’t reported her husband’s theory earlier the woman said she had been sworn to secrecy.

The woman’s mother first alerted authorities to the claims in September 2011 in a letter to Dyfed Powys Police after her daughter and son-in-law divorced.

She reportedly also wrote to PM David Cameron, Defence Secretary Phillip Hammond and army head General Sir Peter Wall about the Soldier N’s aggressive behavior following the breakdown of his marriage.

It is believed these correspondences contained details of the plot.

Though the woman claims to have received acknowledgements from Downing Street and General Wall, neither made any mention of Princess Diana or any suspicion surrounding her death.

In 2011 Dyfed Powys Polcie seized a gun and ammunition from Soldier N’s marital home after his mother-in-law reported his tendencies for violent behavior.

The man was jailed for two years by a military court last May after admitting illegal possession of a firearm, but was freed in July and later discharged from service.

Later that month Soldier N appeared in the court martial for his former SAS housemate, Danny Nightingale, 38, for illegal possession of a pistol and ammunition.

It was during this time the allegations about Princess Diana’s death were revealed.

An inquest into the accident found Princess Diana and Dodi Al Fayed died unlawfully as the result of their driver, Henri Paul, who was said to have been drinking before the crash.

Afghanistan: At least 27 miners killed in Abkhorak coal mine collapse

At least 27 Afghan miners have been killed in a collapse after being trapped underground in the northern province of Samangan, officials have confirmed.

Provincial governor’s spokesman Mohammad Seddiq Azizi said that the men had been working at the Abkhorak coal mine when part of it collapsed.

Four members of the rescue teams were badly injured.

An official said the rescue teams did not have the appropriate equipment. Mining is a state-controlled industry.

It is feared that at least 13 other miners could still be trapped in the mine 135 miles north of the capital, Kabul.

The collapse is the latest accident to hit Afghanistan’s mining industry.

In December, 11 miners were reported to have been killed in a similar incident in the northern province of Baghlan.

The country is known to have vast reserves of oil, gas, copper, cobalt, gold and lithium.

Afghanistan is also known to have a wider array of mineral resources; in 2010, the ministry of mines claimed its reserves were worth nearly $1 trillion.

Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner criticizes Argentine elite

Argentina’s President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner has criticized her country’s elite for trying to create a negative image of her government.

“These small sectors have done well through history, they have kept the lion’s share,” Cristina Fernandez said in an interview with state television.

The president added that most Argentines are better off now than when she came to power.

“Argentina is growing by 5% a year in a world that is collapsing,” she said.

She accused the country’s media of misleadingly “creating an image people believe in”.

“Many want to go to back to the Argentina of the past, where labor cost was much lower and profit margins from speculation much higher,” Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner told Television Publica.

She said privileged sectors in Argentina “have failed to learn from history, or believe that history can be repeated indefinitely.”

Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner’s government had reduced unemployment and raised the standard of living, she said, through successful development and growth public policies.

She said Argentina’s transformation began when her late husband, Nestor Kirchner, took office as president in May 2003.

Nestor Kirchner took over a country recovering for the financial collapse which culminated in street riots at the end of 2001.

Argentina enjoyed several years of strong economic growth during his government.

Nestor Kirchner was succeeded by Cristina Fernandez, who was first elected in 2007 and re-elected in 2011 with 54% of the vote.

But her popularity has since declined, according to opinion polls, and protesters have taken to the streets to denounce widespread corruption and high inflation.

Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner has also had a difficult relationship with the country’s media. Under her government, the Congress approved a new media law that critics say restricts freedom press.

She also introduced tighter regulations for Argentines attempting to buy foreign currency.

In her interview with state television, Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner said the measure was necessary.

“As president I look after the interests of 40 million Argentines. So, as I don’t print dollars, I need dollars to pay the debt I haven’t created.”

Hurricane Ingrid: Mexico hit by severe dual storm

Hurricane Ingrid, the second major storm of the hurricane season, has been steadily gathering strength in the Gulf of Mexico.

Most of people who have been evacuated are staying in official shelters while the remainder has sought refuge with friends and families.

In particular, the southern state of Chiapas and the eastern state of Veracruz have been affected.

Hurricane Ingrid, the second major storm of the hurricane season, has been steadily gathering strength in the Gulf of Mexico

Officials say that two of Mexico’s three major oil-exporting ports are closed, although most of the country’s Gulf Coast ports including Veracruz remained open on Saturday as the storm approached.

Ingrid is expected to deposit between 10in and 25in of rain over a large part of eastern Mexico, which will cause rivers to overflow and create flash floods and mudslides.

The hurricane could also cause a storm surge that would raise waters by 2ft-4ft above normal tide levels near where it makes landfall.

Earlier this week, 13 people were killed in Veracruz when their homes were buried under a landslide caused by heavy rains.

On the other side of the country, it is a similar story in the Pacific states of Oaxaca, Guerrero and Chihuahua to the north.

They have been hit by Tropical Storm Manuel and an estimated 23in of rain is expected to be dumped in the region in just three days, almost twice the monthly rainfall.

The authorities fear that such massive amounts could cause further flash flooding and mudslides over what is traditionally a weekend of celebration for Mexico’s Independence Day.

Raffaele Sollecito claims Italian police wanted him to frame Amanda Knox for murder

Raffaele Sollecito has claimed Italian police tried to bribe him into framing ex-girlfriend Amanda Knox for the murder of British student Meredith Kercher – and revealed his fears “out of control” Knox would do the same to him.

Amanda Knox’s former boyfriend says “sneaky” officers instigated a string of approaches from a prison guard, other inmates and even his family as he and his American lover were awaiting trial for 21-year-old Meredith Kercher’s murder in Perugia, Italy.

Raffaele Sollecito, 29, said he refused to point the finger of blame at Amanda Knox to save his own skin because he was “really fond of her”.

Yet he admits he was terrified Amanda Knox, who he had been dating for just a week before the 2007 killing, would do a deal to stitch him up because she was “out of control”.

Raffaele Sollecito and Amanda Knox, 26, were convicted of Meredith Kercher’s murder in 2009 then cleared on appeal two years later.

But Italy’s highest court later threw out the acquittals and the pair faces a new trial, beginning later this month.

Raffaele Sollecito claimed detectives told him he would be released immediately if he distanced himself from Amanda Knox, saying he should pretend he couldn’t remember anything or that he was sleeping in order for the prosecution to catch her.

He told the Daily Mirror: “They did not persuade me. It was the most sneaky situation. I couldn’t invent anything.”

But he still “feared Amanda” and added: “I knew her for a short time, a week, and in reality I did not really know this woman. I was scared because she was out of control at the police station. She had been making crazy statements and everything was just wrong.

“I thought she could make a deal to blame me. I was scared of that.”

Amanda Knox was jailed for 26 years and Raffaele Sollecito for 25 following the trial in 2009.

Raffaele Sollecito said the first “deal” was when he was in solitary confinement and came about when he his father tried to speak to the prosecution and was told to pass on the message his son should keep his distance from Amanda Knox.

Other family members urged Raffaele Sollecito to take the deal and free himself, but he refused to be persuaded and wrote a letter to his nearest and dearest vowing to stand by Amanda Knox.

Raffaele Sollecito claimed police then began trying to get him to turn against Amanda Knox and that, unless he distanced himself from the American, he would spend the rest of his life in prison.

The Italian claims this message was passed to his family in no uncertain terms.

His father was allegedly approached by a Perugia lawyer offering a similar deal.

Meredith Kercher’s grieving family, from Coulsdon, Surrey, were devastated when Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito were freed on appeal but vowed to keep Meredith’s memory alive.

They have kept out of the public eye and refused to read the books that Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito wrote about their “ordeal”.

But in March the family welcomed news of the retrial and hoped they would finally get answers.

No murder weapon was ever found, DNA tests were faulty and prosecutors provided no motive for murder.

In a series of confused interviews after their arrest Amanda Knox initially claimed to have witnessed the murder and named a local bar owner as the killer.

She later withdrew the statement, insisting it had been made under duress, and said she had been at Raffaele Sollecito’s student apartment throughout the night – which he confirmed.

Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito met at a classical music concert and became lovers within hours. Meredith Kercher was murdered just a week later.

Raffaele Sollecito said the pair “were like teenagers in a fantasy romance” but then became friends bonded by the tragedy.

Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito were photographed being reunited in New York earlier this year – but he insists there is no romance.

Raffaele Sollecito is often asked if he wished he had never met Amanda Knox. He said: “No, I don’t think like that. I don’t blame her, it is not her fault this nightmare. It is others.”

And he claimed his own life is “in limbo”, and that he is without a home. He fears he is a target in Italy for those who still believe he and Amanda Knox were involved and worries police will try to seek revenge by planting drugs in his car.

He has tried to settle in Lugano, Switzerland, and set up a computer software firm – but was kicked out by the Swiss authorities because he failed to disclose details of the murder charges.

Raffaele Sollecito then went to stay with relatives in the US and even got marriage proposals from female murder trial “groupies”.

He has now moved to a secret location in the Caribbean, where he is currently trying to establish a business.

Amanda Knox’s lawyers have insisted she will not be at the retrial in Florence and Raffaele Sollecito said he will wait until after the first of eight scheduled hearings to see “which way the court is going”.

Raffaele Sollecito feels victimized and slammed the police handling of the case, saying everything about the investigation was handled “wrong” and that officers were “incompetent” and “fools”.

Despite his own grievances, Raffaele Sollecito insists he hasn’t forgotten the pain of Meredith Kercher’s family, saying he “can’t imagine their suffering”.

But he urged them to read the case documents and ask questions about what really happened instead of sticking by the “theory” of what happened.

“If you accept only the prosecution case you will never find what is right and what really happened,” he added.

Many carried banners calling for Prime Minister Donald Tusk to resign.

Tens of thousands of protesters have marched through Warsaw in the last of four days of Polish protests against proposed labor law changes

The ruling centre-right coalition’s popularity has plummeted to its lowest level since Donald Tusk took power in 2007.

The rally was one of the largest in Poland in recent years, bringing together people from both the right and the left of the political spectrum.

Organizers of the march said about 120,000 people participated, while city authorities put the figure at 100,000.

Protesters waved flags and blew whistles as they marched through the streets of the capital.

Some held banners saying “We are Coming to Get You” and “Tusk’s government Must Go”.

“We’re becoming slaves in our own country,” said Marek Duda, the leader of the right-of-centre Solidarity Union.

The rally was not about austerity, Poland being the only country in the European Union to have avoided a recession since the crisis began.

However, the economy is just coming out of its worst slump in years, and the protesters say it still lags behind its neighbors to the west.

Hosni Mubarak retrial: Judge Mahmoud el-Rachidi orders trial media blackout

Judge Mahmoud el-Rachidi has ordered a media blackout during the next phase of the retrial of Egypt’s former leader Hosni Mubarak.

Judge Mahmoud el-Rachidi said the sessions, to be held on October 19-21, would involve national security issues.

Hosni Mubarak, 85, appeared in court on charges of complicity in the killing of protesters during the 2011 uprising.

Defense lawyers are seeking to blame Islamists from the Muslim Brotherhood and foreign forces for the deaths of about 850 people killed in the unrest.

Hosni Mubarak was jailed for life in June last year for contributing to the killings.

But he appealed against his sentence and a retrial was ordered.

Hosni Mubarak is on trial along with his two sons, the former interior minister, and six security chiefs.

Certain parts of his original trial were also held behind closed doors.

Judge Mahmoud el-Rachidi had promised more transparency with the retrial.

However, the judge said on Saturday that all journalists would be barred from the next hearings and forbidden from quoting lawyers.

“This decision does not go against my previous promise to the media, because I had announced from the start that the people will know about everything, except for proceedings of hearings, in order for us to allow the witness to testify,” he said.

The interior minister’s lawyer said the people called to testify had information on who killed the protesters, and “which foreign factions joined forces with the Muslim Brotherhood in the events of the 28 January [2011] to cause chaos and the killing of protesters”.

Muslim Brotherhood’s candidate Mohamed Morsi won Egypt’s first free election last year, but was eventually overthrown by the military after widespread protests.

Hosni Mubarak was freed from custody shortly after the overthrow, and placed under house arrest.

During Hosni Mubarak’s 29-year rule the Muslim Brotherhood was outlawed.

Morrissey halts autobiography release

Morrissey has halted plans to release his autobiography, three days before it was due to be published.

The memoirs were set to give details about the 54-year-old former Smiths frontman’s life growing up in Manchester and his relationship with former songwriting partner Johnny Marr.

A statement on his fan website said there had been a “last minute content disagreement” with its publisher.

A Penguin Books spokeswoman said there would be no comment on the issue.

“Although Morrissey’s autobiography was set to be available throughout the UK on September 16th, a last-minute content disagreement between Penguin Books and Morrissey has caused the venture to collapse,” the statement said.

“No review copies were printed and Morrissey is now in search of a new publisher.”

It is the latest setback for Morrissey, who suffered a series of what he referred to as “medical mishaps” which led to him cancelling his US tour earlier this year.

Morrissey was also forced to cancel part of his South American tour in July due, he said, to a “lack of funding”.

Lamar Odom faces six months in jail after being charged with DUI

Khloe Kardashian’s husband Lamar Odom has been formally charged with DUI two weeks after he was pulled over and arrested.

Los Angeles City Attorney’s office charged Lamar Odom, 33, with one misdemeanor count of driving under the influence.

Prosecutors have not revealed specific details of what Lamar Odom was under the influence of.

Lamar Odom will face court later this month with his arraignment scheduled for September 27.

The charges stem from Lamar Odom’s August 30 arrest.

Officers from the Californian Highway Patrol pulled over the former LA Lakers star’s Mercedes-Benz on the 101 freeway in the San Fernando Valley, California, at 4 a.m.

Officers claim Lamar Odom was driving well below the speed limit and in a “serpentine manner”.

Lamar Odom reportedly initially refused a field sobriety test, then failed it and was held at Van Nuys police station before being released later that day on $15,000 bail.

California Highway Patrol public information officer Leland Tang, told Radaronline at the time that the basketball player also refused a drug test which resulted in the immediate suspension of his license.

The officer said: “He did what no one should ever do, he refused the chemical tests.

“That means that his license is revoked and Lamar could get the most powerful attorney in the world and he is still not going to have a license for a year.”

Lamar Odom is now facing six months in jail and a $1,000 fine if convicted.

For the last month there has been increased speculation that Lamar Odom has abused drugs and the basketball pro is allegedly battling an addiction to crack cocaine.

A source has alleged that Lamar Odom entered an outpatient program this week to seek treatment but went on to claim that he missed a session on Tuesday.

There have also been allegations that Lamar Odom had cheated on Khloe Kardashian with multiple women.
