John Kerry: US will not send troops to help Iraq fight al-Qaeda

Secretary of State John Kerry has said the US will help Iraq fight al-Qaeda-linked militants, but that it is not planning to send troops back to the country.

John Kerry said he was confident the government of Iraqi PM Nouri Maliki could defeat the militants.

Earlier, the Iraqi government said it had lost control of the strategic city of Fallujah, west of Baghdad.

Al-Qaeda-linked militants now control the south of the city.

An Iraqi reporter there says tribesmen allied with al-Qaeda hold the rest of Fallujah.

John Kerry made the comments as he left Jerusalem for Jordan and Saudi Arabia to discuss his effort to broker peace between Israel and the Palestinians.

“We will stand with the government of Iraq and with others who will push back against their efforts to destabilize,” he said.

“We are going to do everything that is possible. I will not go into the details.”

He added: “We are not contemplating putting boots on the ground. This is their fight.”

The head of the police in Anbar province – Hadi Razeij – said on Saturday that his men had pulled back to the city walls and the people of Fallujah were “the prisoners of Isis”.

Fighting there erupted after troops broke up a protest camp by Sunni Arabs in the city of Ramadi on Monday.

They have been accusing the Shia-led government of marginalizing the Sunnis.

Local Sunni Arabs have been angered by what they perceive as discrimination by the government of Nouri Maliki.

They also say their minority community is being targeted by anti-terrorism measures implemented to stem the surge in sectarian violence.

In recent months, Sunni militants have stepped up attacks across Iraq, while Shia groups began deadly reprisals – raising fears of a return to full-scale sectarian conflict.

Dennis Rodman unveils team for North Korea exhibition basketball game

0

Dennis Rodman has unveiled the team of former NBA players to play an exhibition basketball game in Pyongyang, North Korea, this month.

Dennis Rodman will lead the team that includes former NBA All-Stars Kenny Anderson, Cliff Robinson and Vin Baker. Craig Hodges, Doug Christie and Charles D. Smith are on the team, as well. They will play against a top North Korean senior national team on Wednesday, January 8th, marking Kim Jong-un’s birthday.

The former NBA star is the highest profile American to meet Kim Jong-un since the leader inherited power from his father in late 2011.

Dennis Rodman calls the game his version of ”basketball diplomacy.”

”My previous travels have allowed me to feel the enthusiasm and warmth of fans,” he said.

”The positive memories and smiles on the faces of the children and families are a testament to the great efforts we have put into fulfilling our mission wherever we go voiding any politics. We are all looking forward to arriving in Pyongyang, meeting the citizens, visiting various charities and using the opportunity to develop new relationships that result in our annual return.”

Dennis Rodman made his latest visit to North Korea shortly before Christmas to train the North Korean basketball team, though he did not meet with Kim Jong-un.

He said his trips would not be affected by the recent execution of Kim Jong-un’s uncle.

Charles D. Smith, who played for the New York Knicks, said he was looking forward to the game with Dennis Rodman.

”Dennis and I are total opposites, but we work very well together,” he said.

”Dennis is one of the few people I know that doesn’t just talk but actually lives a culturally diverse life. We have traveled everywhere together, so I was not surprised with his first visit to North Korea.

”Cultural exchange is about sharing. Sharing ideas and thoughts on education, culture and life.”

Irish betting company Paddy Power PLC, a driving force behind the exhibition, removed its name last month as the title sponsor. The company is still financing the trip and is honoring all contractual commitments.

Dennis Rodman has been criticized for not talking about North Korea’s human rights record, described as one of the world’s worst by activists, the US State Department and North Korean defectors.

Antarctic rescue: Polar Star to help Xue Long and Akademik Shokalskiy

US ice-breaker Polar Star is to help the Chinese and Russian ships that are stuck in thick ice in Antarctica following a rescue mission.

The Polar Star has been asked to cut a path through the ice in order to free the Xue Long and the Akademik Shokalskiy, the US Coast Guard said.

The Xue Long became ice-bound after helping to rescue 52 passengers stranded on Russian research vessel Akademik Shokalskiy on Thursday.

The Akademik Shokalskiy has been trapped since December 24.

The Polar Star is responding to requests for assistance from the Australian authorities as well as from the Russian and Chinese governments, the US Coast Guard said in a statement.

“Our highest priority is safety of life at sea, which is why we are assisting in breaking a navigational path for both of these vessels,” said Vice Adm Paul Zukunft, commander of Coast Guard Pacific Area.

The Polar Star, which is specifically designed for open-water icebreaking, was due to leave Sydney, Australia, on Sunday and is expected to arrive at the stranded ships in a week’s time, according to the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA).

It comes after the Xue Long confirmed it was trapped following a rescue mission to remove passengers on board the Akademik Shokalskiy.

On Thursday, a helicopter from the Chinese ship transferred 52 people from the Akademik Shokalskiy to the Australian vessel, the Aurora Australis.

Most of the Russian crew-members stayed on board the Akademik Shokalskiy.

Midwest braces for record-breaking low temperatures

The Midwest is bracing for potentially record-breaking low temperatures as an Arctic chill brings more freezing weather.

A winter storm has already blanketed areas of Canada and the north-eastern US with up to 2ft of snow.

It has been blamed for 16 deaths and the cancellation of more than 5,000 flights since Wednesday.

Forecasters say temperatures in the Midwest could feel as low as -58F (-50C) with the effect of wind chill.

Authorities have warned residents to remain indoors, both for their own safety and to keep roads clear for snow removal.

In Canada, tens of thousands of people on the island of Newfoundland remain without power due to a transformer fire linked to heavy snow.

“The coldest weather in years will be making its presence known from the Upper Midwest to the Mid-Atlantic region,” the US National Weather Service said in statement.

The states of Ohio, South Dakota and Illinois are among those set to be hit.

The weather service said “an incredibly strong surge of bitterly cold Arctic air” would sweep across the country from Saturday night until Tuesday.

It is set to continue to the north-east, where residents are still digging out from the week’s deadly snowstorm.

It could bring some of the coldest temperatures in two decades.

“The last really big Arctic outbreak was 1994,” Reuters news agency quoted Bob Oravec, a forecaster with the National Weather Service, as saying.

“Outbreaks like this don’t occur everyday.”

In Canada, the temperature dropped as low as -29C (-20F) in Toronto and -38C in Quebec City with wind chill on Thursday – the lowest seen in at least two decades there.

Heavy snow has also affected states including New York, Connecticut and Massachusetts, with school closed, transport systems drawn to a halt and residents told to stay at home.

Boston was said to be the worst hit with nearly 18in of snow.

Sixteen deaths have been blamed on the wide-ranging storm, according to the Associated Press news agency.

A salt storage worker was killed in Philadelphia when a 100-ft pile of road salt fell and crushed him. A woman suffering from Alzheimer’s disease in New York state froze to death after she wandered away from her rural home.

Some 1,200 flights were cancelled across the US and about 6,000 flights delayed on Saturday, according to reports. This followed more than 4,000 cancellations earlier in the week.

Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey were said to be among the worst affected.

Bangladesh election 2014: Clashes in boycotted poll

Bangladeshi opposition activists and police clashed as the country is holding a general election boycotted by the opposition.

At least three people were killed in unrest on Sunday. Scores have died in the run-up to the polls.

Dozens of polling stations have been torched and voting is suspended at more than 100. Polling is said to be thin.

The opposition is boycotting the vote with a two-day strike against what it called a “scandalous farce”.

PM Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League is assured of victory, with government candidates already declared victors by default in many seats.

She rejected demands for her to step down and a neutral government to oversee the poll, as in previous years.

“The polls opened across the country at 08:00,” said election commission spokesman SM Asaduzzaman. Voting will continue until 16:00.

In more than half of constituencies there is no voting at all, because the opposition boycott has led to government candidates being declared winners in advance.

Police opened fire as protesters tried to take over polling station in northern Rangpur district, killing three people.

In Nilphamari district, police also fired on about two dozen protesters. One person died.

Bangladesh votes amid violence and boycott
Bangladesh votes amid violence and boycott

In the opposition stronghold of Bogra, the police chief told AFP: “We’ve seen thousands of protesters attack polling booths and our personnel at a number of locations with Molotov cocktails and petrol bombs.”

Media reported that more than 100 polling stations were torched overnight – adding to a similar number the night before.

One polling station in Dhaka’s Mirpur district recorded only 25 ballots out of 24,000 registered voters in the first two hours, AP reported.

Security is tight, with some 50,000 troops reportedly deployed around the country for the election.

Given the arson attacks and attempts to steal ballot papers and despite the heavy police presence, voters are wary about how secure they would be in coming to the polling stations.

The opposition Bangladesh National Party (BNP) began a nationwide 48-hour strike on Saturday a day after its leader Khaleda Zia urged supporters to “completely boycott” what she called a “scandalous farce” of an election.

She accused the government of placing her under house arrest – something the authorities deny.

The strike is only the latest in a string of protests by the BNP and its allies – including the Islamist Jamaat-e-Islami party – that has seen a blockade of roads, railways and waterways and the closure of shops, schools and offices.

In the run-up to the polls, scores of opposition supporters died in police shootings and dozens of commuters were burnt to death by protesters throwing petrol bombs at strike-defying buses.

All elections since 1991 have been held under a neutral caretaker administration to ensure that voting is not fixed.

But the Awami League abolished the caretaker system in 2010, arguing that it was no longer necessary. It used its two-thirds majority in parliament to make the change.

The government has insisted that the BNP should take part in the polls within the existing constitutional framework. It says that the opposition should discuss any changes it wants after the vote.

Sheikh Hasina and Khaleda Zia – who are bitter political enemies – have alternated from government to opposition for most of the past two decades.

Small plane makes emergency landing on Major Deegan Expressway in Bronx

A single-engine Piper PA-28 plane has made an emergency landing on the Major Deegan Expressway in The Bronx.

The small plane touched down on the interstate highway on Saturday afternoon after maintenance workers repairing potholes stopped traffic to leave the road clear.

None of the three on board suffered serious injury, local media say.

They say investigators are looking into the cause of the emergency – possibly a mechanical failure or fuel shortage.

The plane had taken off from the city of Danbury in Connecticut for a flight around the Statue of Liberty, according to officials.

It was said to be on its way back when it experienced engine problems.

A team of New York City Department of Transportation workers, who were mending potholes in the carriageway, stopped traffic after noticing the plane in distress, clearing the road for the emergency landing, a spokesman for the department said.

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said it was “a bit of a miracle” that nobody was seriously hurt or killed, the Associated Press reported.

Bill de Blasio added that emergency workers were removing the plane’s fuel and there was no fire or gas leak.

Photos taken by bystanders showed blue and white plane largely intact, although its landing gear appeared to have collapsed.

BlackBerry files lawsuit against Ryan Seacrest’s company over Typo keyboard case

BlackBerry has filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against the company co-founded by Ryan Seacrest that makes a keyboard case for the iPhone.

On Friday, BlackBerry filed a lawsuit against Typo Products LLC, a company that makes a slip-on keyboard designed to fit the iPhone 5 and 5S.

The company Los Angeles-based company was founded by entrepreneur Laurence Hallier and television personality Ryan Seacrest. The company’s flagship product, the “Typo Keyboard,” was conceived to make typing on the iPhone quicker and less prone to typos.

Now the company might be wishing it went a little slower. The keyboard, BlackBerry alleges, violates the company’s intellectual property rights for copying BlackBerry’s own keyboard designs.

BlackBerry has filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against the company co-founded by Ryan Seacrest that makes a keyboard case for the iPhone

Instead of developing its own design, “Typo chose to copy BlackBerry’s iconic keyboard design as embodied in, among others, BlackBerry’s Q10 smartphone,” the lawsuit alleges, which was filed Friday in the U.S. district court in the Northern District of California.

“This is a blatant infringement against BlackBerry’s iconic keyboard, and we will vigorously protect our intellectual property against any company that attempts to copy our unique design,” said Steve Zipperstein, BlackBerry’s general counsel and chief legal officer, in a statement.

The suit seeks a trial by jury to obtain compensation for the copyright violation.

On Saturday, Typo issued a statement in response to the suit: “We are aware of the lawsuit that Blackberry filed against Typo Products. Although we respect Blackberry and its intellectual property, we believe that Blackberrys claims against Typo lack merit and we intend to defend the case vigorously. We are excited about our innovative keyboard design, which is the culmination of years of development and research.”

The statement added that the company plans to go ahead with its launch at International CES in Las Vegas and is on track to begin shipping pre-orders at the end of January.

Iraq: Insurgents capture strategic city of Fallujah

Iraqi army has lost control of the strategic city of Fallujah, west of Baghdad, eyewitnesses say.

Al-Qaeda-linked militants now control the south of the city. An Iraqi reporter there says tribesmen allied with al-Qaeda hold the rest of Fallujah.

Fighting there erupted after troops broke up a protest camp by Sunni Arabs in the city of Ramadi on Monday.

They have been accusing the Shia-led government of marginalizing the Sunnis.

The recent fighting in Fallujah and Ramadi has pitted government troops on the one hand and the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isis), which is affiliated with al-Qaeda, and Sunni tribesmen on the other.

Local Sunni Arabs have been angered by they perceive as discrimination by the government of PM Nouri Maliki.

They also say their minority community is being targeted by anti-terrorism measures implemented to stem the surge in sectarian violence.

Late on Saturday, eyewitnesses said al-Qaeda militants were in evidence on the streets of Fallujah, riding pick-up trucks mounted with anti-aircraft guns.

Reuters news agency said saying troops were shelling parts of the city to try to retake it.

Iraqiya state television quoted Nouri Maliki as saying: “We will not back down until we end all terrorist groups and save our people in Anbar.”

On Tuesday, he agreed to withdraw the army from towns and cities in Anbar province, to allow police to resume control of security.

But as soon as soldiers left their posts, militants aligned to al-Qaeda appeared in Ramadi, Fallujah and Tarmiya, storming police stations, freeing prisoners and seizing weapons.

Nouri Maliki reversed his decision the next day, sending soldiers back to Anbar.

But on Thursday, militants in Ramadi and Fallujah raised black flags on buildings and used the loudspeakers of mosques to call on people to join their struggle and support a “peaceful takeover”.

In recent months Sunni militants have stepped up attacks across Iraq, while Shia groups began deadly reprisals – raising fears of a return to full-scale sectarian conflict.

On Wednesday, the UN said at least 7,818 civilians and 1,050 members of the security forces had been killed in 2013.

Coldest arctic air masses in nearly 30 years to hit Midwest this weekend

This weekend will bring a deep freeze that could prove fatal for the ill-equipped across the Midwest.

States such as Illinois, Minnesota and Wisconsin will see lows in the minus teens and minus 20s. And with sub-zero winds whipping through some areas, it could feel more like the minus 50s and minus 60s, meteorologists warn.

The Weather Channel warned that “one of the coldest arctic air masses in nearly 30 years” was likely to hit the Plains and Midwest this weekend. Some all-time cold records appeared to be in jeopardy, forecasters said.

Snow is expected to begin falling throughout the Midwest on Sunday, also reaching parts of Tennessee and Alabama. Along the East Coast, the storm will bring rain but be accompanied by warmer weather.

Minnesota isn’t taking any chances on Monday. Governor Mark Dayton said all public schools will be closed for the day.

Minneapolis will see a high of minus-14 degrees and a low of minus 27 degrees through Monday – but with the wind chill it would feel like the minus 40s.

“The safety of Minnesota’s schoolchildren must be our first priority,” Mark Dayton said in a statement.

One of the coldest arctic air masses in nearly 30 years is likely to hit the Plains and Midwest this weekend
One of the coldest arctic air masses in nearly 30 years is likely to hit the Plains and Midwest this weekend

“I have made this decision to protect all our children from the dangerously cold temperatures now forecasted for next Monday. I encourage Minnesotans of all ages to exercise caution in these extreme weather conditions.”

Temperatures won’t be any better in Chicago, which will come close to a high of minus 11 degrees – a record mark previously reached in December 1983 and January 1994.

Perhaps the most foolhardy will be football fans in Wisconsin. Sunday’s NFC wild-card game between the Green Bay Packers and the San Francisco 49ers will play out in bone-chilling minus-5-degree temperatures.

Meanwhile, cities across the mid-Atlantic to the Northeast will see milder temperatures with rain Sunday into Monday. New York City will see highs in the lower 40s. Boston, digging out from as much as two feet of snow, could reach 50 degrees.

While airports in the areas hardest hit by Friday’s big storm still grappled with some residual flight problems, less than 800 into or out of the U.S. had been canceled as of 11 a.m. ET Saturday, according to FlightAware. More than 2,600 flights into or out of the U.S. were canceled by midday Friday.

New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport, which reported 192 cancelled flights due to “zero visibility and high winds” at midday Friday, cut that number to 37 on Saturday morning. The trend carried to other area airports; La Guardia only reported 25 canceled flights on Saturday as compared with Friday’s 271, and Newark slashed its numbers from 285 to 37.

Boston’s Logan International Airport reported 23 cancellations Saturday morning and most other U.S. airports reported cancellations in the teens or single digits.

While the next wave of northeast weather might not affect air travel, another frigid plunge is forecast for Tuesday: New York City is expected to see a high of around 10 degrees, while Philadelphia and Boston will be in the teens.

Michael Schumacher’s manager warning over invalid health reports

0

Michael Schumacher’s manager Sabine Kehm has warned about “invalid” health reports, after one was quoted as saying the F1 champion’s life was no longer at risk.

Michael Schumacher, 45, remains “critical but stable” in hospital in Grenoble after a skiing accident.

A statement from Sabine Kehm said reports not from managers or doctors “must be treated as pure speculation”.

The statement also rejected reports a camera fixed to Michael Schumacher’s ski helmet had not been handed over voluntarily.

Michael Schumacher, who retired in 2012, is in a medically induced coma after suffering head injuries during a fall in the resort of Meribel last Sunday.

His helmet cracked on impact when he hit a rock while skiing off-piste.

Sabine Kehm’s statement read: “Michael’s condition remains critical but stable. We would like to clearly stress that any information regarding Michael’s health not coming from the doctors treating him or from his management must be treated as invalid and pure speculation.”

“The family cares only for Michael’s health.”

On Friday, some media quoted Michael Schumacher’s friend, former F1 driver Philippe Streiff, as saying that he had been told by the Schumacher family doctor, Gerard Saillant, that Michael’s life was no longer in danger.

Sabine Kehm’s statement continued: “Michael’s helmet camera was voluntarily given to the investigating authorities by the family. That this should have been done against the wishes of the family is untrue.”

Investigators in France are examining the camera.

The French authorities are hoping the device may reveal clues about the circumstances of the accident, although it remains unclear whether the camera was switched on at the time.

Police also interviewed Michael Schumacher’s teenage son, who witnessed the crash.

Michael Schumacher management’s statement concluded by saying: “In consultation with the doctors treating Michael, it is not expected that there will be any press conference before Monday.”

Pope Francis leaves voice mail for nuns in Spain on New Year’s Eve

Nuns in a convent in southern Spain have been surprised by Pope Francis with a message left on an answer machine on New Year’s Eve.

Pope Francis was previously archbishop of Buenos Aires and knew some of the nuns at the convent as they also are from Argentina.

The nuns were at prayer when the Pope rang.

On hearing the message, they rang their bishop to try to get back in contact, but Pope Francis rang back in the evening.

Sister Adriana, the prioress of the convent, told COPE radio “she wanted to die” on hearing the message.

“Our friendship goes back 15 years but I never thought the Pope would remember us,” she said.

A recording of the message has been played on Spanish media.

“What can the nuns be doing that they can’t answer?” the message begins.

“Pope Francis speaking, I wanted to say hello to you at the end of the year. I’ll see if I can call you again later. God bless you.”

Paul Walker death final report: No drugs or alcohol in fatal crash

A post-mortem examination has found that neither Paul Walker nor driver Roger Rodas were under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of their deaths in the fatal car accident.

Their Porsche was travelling at an “unsafe speed” when it hit a pole and burst into flames in California on November 30, a coroner’s report stated.

Both deaths have since been ruled accidents, authorities say.

Paul Walker was best known for the car racing films Fast and Furious.

Authorities estimate the car was travelling at nearly 100 mph at the time of the fatal accident, according to the coroner’s report released on Friday.

But sheriff’s officials say the investigation into the accident has yet to be completed.

A previous post-mortem examination determined Paul Walker, 40, was killed by impact and injuries related to a fire.

The Los Angeles County coroner found that the driver, Roger Rodas, died from impact injuries alone.

Both men are said to have died within seconds of the crash, according to media reports.

Paul Walker starred in the Fast & Furious blockbuster films that celebrated high-speed car chases.

Production on the seventh installment of the Fast and Furious franchise was temporarily halted following his death.Universal Pictures later announced the film’s release date would be pushed back several months to April 2015.

Majid al-Majid dies in custody in Beirut hospital

Al-Qaeda’s chief in Lebanon, Majid al-Majid, has died in custody in a Beirut hospital, Lebanese army announces.

The Saudi, who led the Abdullah Azzam Brigades and was on Saudi Arabia’s most-wanted-terrorists list, was arrested in Lebanon recently.

An army general told Associated Press the militant died of kidney failure.

The group has carried out attacks across the Middle East and claimed a bomb attack on Iran’s Beirut embassy in November that killed 23 people.

The Iranian cultural attaché was among the dead.

A Lebanese army statement said Majid al-Majid died in a military hospital in Beirut on Saturday, as he was receiving medical treatment.

Security sources said he had gone into a coma suffering from kidney failure.

Majid al-Majid led the Abdullah Azzam Brigades and was on Saudi Arabia’s most-wanted-terrorists list

He was believed to have required dialysis for the condition.

It was only on Friday that the Lebanese authorities said that DNA tests had confirmed his identity.

Defense Minister Fayez Ghosn earlier confirmed the commander was being held by army intelligence in Beirut and was “being interrogated in secret”. He refused to say when and how the arrest took place.

However, a Lebanese security source told the Reuters news agency that he had been captured with another Saudi militant and had been living in the southern city of Sidon.

Majid al-Majid had led the Brigades since 2012.

Based in both Lebanon and the Arabian Peninsula, the group is named after a Palestinian jihadist ideologue who recruited mujahideen for the fight against the Soviets in Afghanistan in the 1980s.

The group has attracted hardline Islamist militants who fought in the Iraqi insurgency and has based itself in the Ein el-Hilweh Palestinian refugee camp, near Sidon.

The US designated the group a terrorist organization in 2012, freezing its assets.

November’s Iranian embassy bombing was believed to be its first major attack.

Iran and the Hezbollah militant group are allied with the Syrian regime of President Bashar al-Assad.

Media reports said Majid al-Majid had pledged allegiance to the leader of the al-Nusra Front, an al-Qaeda affiliate seeking to overthrow President Bashar al-Assad.

On Thursday, a helicopter from the Xue Long transferred 52 passengers from the Akademik Shokalskiy to the Aurora Australis.

Russian scientific mission Akademik Shokalskiy has been trapped by thick floes of ice since 24 December.

“Xue Long’s attempt to manoeuvre through the ice… was unsuccessful. Xue Long has confirmed to the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) [that] it is beset by ice,” AMSA said in a statement on Saturday.

“The master of Xue Long has confirmed to AMSA that the ship is safe, it is not in distress and does not require assistance at this time,” AMSA said, adding that there was no immediate danger to the ice-breaker’s crew.

It is the latest twist in what has become a complicated rescue operation in the Antarctic.

The Australian Aurora Australis had been asked to remain in open water nearby in case the Xue Long needed help – but AMSA said this was no longer needed and it had been released from its search and rescue mission.

The authority added that the Australian vessel was travelling to the Casey research base on the Windmill Islands, just outside the Antarctic Circle, to complete a re-supply task before continuing to Hobart – the capital of the Australian state of Tasmania.

Andrew Peacock, an Australian doctor and photographer who was rescued from the Russian ship, spoke of his fellow passengers’ frustration aboard the Aurora over the latest delay in their journey home, according to the Associated Press.

“So our time down south is not over yet and we are going to be delayed in our return to friends and family by some time yet, which is frustrating,” Andrew Peacock said before the Aurora was given permission to continue.

The Akademik Shokalskiy became trapped by thick floes of ice driven by strong winds, about 1,500 nautical miles south of Hobart.

The Akademik Shokalskiy was being used by the Australasian Antarctic Expedition (AAE) 2013 to follow the route explorer Douglas Mawson travelled a century ago.

Sochi Winter Games 2014: Russia to set up special zone for protest rallies

Russia has decided to set up a special zone for protest rallies at the Sochi Winter Olympics, where security will be tight.

A special security regime will be in place in and around the southern city from January 7 until March 21.

The Russian authorities announced last year that a ban on rallies would be imposed in the Games area.

But a decree now says protests during the Games in February can be held if agreed with the authorities.

Presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said all public gatherings and demonstrations must be agreed in advance with the municipal authorities as well as regional divisions of the interior ministry and the Federal Security Service, the FSB.

“The president has issued an instruction to the organizers of the Olympic Games, together with the leadership of Krasnodar Territory and the Sochi mayor’s office, to select a venue in the city where rallies, demonstrations and other events, including, if necessary, protests, could be freely held,” Dmitry Peskov said.

But limits can be placed on the number of people taking part in demonstrations, according to the presidential decree.

Protests groups, such as those campaigning for gay rights and political reform, had complained at the restrictions on the right to stage demonstrations at the Games.

Security has been a major concern in the run-up to the event, with fears of attack by militant groups.

Two suicide bomb attacks killed 34 people in the southern city of Volgograd on December 29 and 30. Russian investigators say the perpetrators are believed to be two men who arrived in the city from the restive North Caucasus region.

The bombings prompted President Vladimir Putin to order further security measures and personally inspect Olympic sites.

Security measures in Sochi are reported to include surveillance by drones and strict limits on road access to the city.

Michael Schumacher ski helmet camera inspected by French investigators

French investigators are examining a camera which had been fixed to Michael Schumacher’s ski helmet, media reports say.

Authorities were hoping the device may reveal clues about the circumstances of his skiing accident in the French Alps, a source told the AFP news agency.

Police also interviewed Michael Schumacher’s teenage son, who witnessed the crash.

Fans earlier held a vigil outside the French hospital treating the F1 legend, to mark his 45th birthday.

Ferrari supporters gathered at the clinic in the city of Grenoble and held a one-minute silence on Friday afternoon.

Michael Schumacher’s family said in a statement they had been moved to tears and “utterly overwhelmed” by the “incredible sympathies” shown by the fans.

The seven-time F1 champion, who retired in 2012, is in a medically induced coma after suffering head injuries during a fall in the resort of Meribel last Sunday.

His helmet cracked on impact when he hit a rock while skiing off-piste.

Michael Schumacher remains in a stable but critical condition after two operations to remove blood and pressure from his brain.

News of the camera’s existence emerged late on Friday afternoon.

AFP said Michael Schumacher’s family had handed both the device and helmet to the authorities for investigation.

It remains unclear whether the camera was switched on at the time of the accident.

The news comes after members of Ferrari clubs in France and Italy travelled to Grenoble to mark Michael Schumacher’s birthday on January 3rd.

Phil Everly of Everly Brothers dies of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease at 74

Phil Everly, one half of the Everly Brothers, has died, aged 74, in California, his family announces.

Phil Everly died in the Los Angeles suburb of Burbank of complications from lung disease, his wife, Patti, told the Los Angeles Times.

“We are absolutely heartbroken,” Patti Everly said, adding that the disease was the result of a lifetime of smoking.

Phil Everly and his brother Don made up the Everly Brothers, one of the biggest pop acts of the 1950s and early 1960s.

They had a string of close-harmony hits including Wake Up Little Suzie, Cathy’s Clown, Bye Bye Love, and All I Have To Do Is Dream.

Phil Everly died on Friday of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, his son Jason Everly told AP.

The Washington Post quoted a woman at Don Everly’s home as saying he was too upset to talk about the death of his brother.

“He expected to go first,” she told the newspaper.

Rolling Stone magazine calls the Everly Brothers “the most important vocal duo in rock”.

In its biography of the pair, the magazine says Phil and his older brother Don were the children of Midwestern country music singers Ike and Margaret Everly and performed on the family radio show while growing up.

In their heyday between 1957 and 1962, the Everly Brothers had 19 Top 40 hits, according to the Associated Press. They influenced acts such as the Beatles and the Beach Boys.

Don and Phil Everly had an onstage breakup in 1973 that led to a decade-long estrangement, but Phil later told Time magazine the brothers’ relationship had survived this.

“Don and I are infamous for our split,” Phil Everly said, “but we’re closer than most brothers.”

The Everly Brothers were elected to the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame in its first year, 1986, and they were given a lifetime achievement award at the Grammys in 1997.

Robert De Niro happy to play supporting roles

Robert De Niro said he’s happy to play supporting roles as his time as a leading actor is over.

Robert De Niro, 70, admitted it is rare to land a big role at his age.

The actor told Britain’s Metro newspaper: “That’s just life. We can’t play certain parts any more. We’re playing the father or the grandfather or the great-grandfather, and that can be written in a funny way, so it’s fine. But you’re not carrying the movie as the young romantic lead – those days are gone.”

He credits the baby-boomer generation with keeping him in work as older movie fans continue to visit theaters.

Robert De Niro added: “I don’t go to see enough films. But I’m told that since baby-boomers will still actually go to see a movie in a theater – because it’s a communal experience that our generation is used to – there’s now a trend towards making some movies that those people could possibly identify themselves in.”
