Prince William and Kate Middleton arrive in New Zealand with Prince George

Prince William and Kate Middleton have carried their son, Prince George, off the plane at the start of a three-week visit to New Zealand and Australia.

It is the first official tour for the 8-month-old prince, who was awake in his mother’s arms as the trio were greeted at Wellington airport by New Zealand’s PM John Key and waiting media.

It was only the second time Prince George has faced the press.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were met with cold, wet and windy weather.

After greeting them on the tarmac, John Key tweeted: “The Royals have landed in Wellington. Let’s make them very welcome, New Zealand.”

Prince William and Kate Middleton were then taken to Government House, the official residence of the governor general, where they received a traditional Maori welcome.

They were greeted with a nose-press, called a hongi, and met Maori warriors.

A minor controversy marked the start of the trip – which ends in Canberra on April 25.

Plunket, New Zealand’s national childcare agency, published photos of a baby seat facing forwards in the royal car, with critics claiming this contradicted Plunket’s advice that children of Prince George’s age should face the rear window.

Kate Middleton’s fashion choices are expected to be closely scrutinized during the tour and she arrived in New Zealand wearing a red coat with gold buttons – from British designer Catherine Walker, who was a firm favorite of Diana, Princess of Wales.

The Duchess teamed her outfit with a red pillbox hat designed by Gina Foster and a silver fern-shaped brooch, a symbol of New Zealand.

She has been loaned the diamond and platinum piece by the Queen, who had herself received it as a gift during a visit to Auckland 60 years ago.

Prince George was seen to be wearing a cream cardigan and matching shoes.

He will be taken to a few specific engagements throughout the trip, and the program stops on most days in the late afternoon to allow his parents to get back to him.

Prince William, Kate Middleton and Prince George flew on a scheduled Qantas flight from Heathrow Airport, via Dubai, to Sydney where they transferred to a military plane.

Their engagements in New Zealand will see them take in a yacht race and visit a Maori tribe, a rugby stadium and a vineyard.

In Australia, their destinations include Sydney, the Blue Mountains, Queensland, Adelaide and Canberra.

Helping oversee the care of Prince George will be his newly-appointed nanny Maria Teresa Turrion Borrallo, who stayed in the background as the royals received their official welcome to New Zealand.

India elections 2014: Indians vote in world’s biggest poll

India has begun voting in the world’s biggest election, with the nine-phase ballot beginning on Monday and concluding on May 12.

India ruling Congress party pitted against the Hindu nationalist BJP opposition.

Votes will be counted on 16 May.

More than 800 million Indians are eligible to vote in a poll dominated by corruption and high inflation.

A new anti-corruption party, the AAP, is also contesting the elections after a spectacular result in local polls.

The AAP (Aam Aadmi, or Common Man’s Party) made a strong showing at the state assembly polls in the capital, Delhi, and is standing for all the seats in the parliament.

Several smaller regional parties are also in the fray and if no single party wins a clear majority, they could play a crucial role in government formation.

The Lok Sabha (lower house of parliament) has 543 elected seats and any party or a coalition needs a minimum of 272 lawmakers to form a government.

PM Manmohan Singh has already said he is stepping down and the Congress is being led by Rahul Gandhi, the latest member of India’s influential Nehru-Gandhi dynasty.

The BJP is being led by the charismatic and controversial Hindu nationalist leader Narendra Modi.

Narendra Modi, who is ahead in all the pre-election surveys, is the leader of Gujarat state, which witnessed one of India’s worst anti-Muslim riots in 2002.

Some 814 million voters – 100 million more than at the last elections in 2009 – are eligible to vote at 930,000 polling stations, up from 830,000 polling stations in 2009.

Electronic voting machines will be used and will, for the first time, contain a None of the Above (Nota) button – an option for voters who do not want to cast their ballot for any of the candidates.

On the first day of voting, polling is taking place in 6 constituencies in two states in the north-east – five in Assam and one in Tripura.

The first voters have already cast their ballots in the state, with many others queuing up outside polling stations.

Assam is a Congress party stronghold but the opposition BJP is hoping to make inroads.

The Congress party has promised “inclusive growth” if it returns to power.

In its election manifesto, the party has promised a raft of welfare schemes, including a right to healthcare for all and pensions for the aged and disabled.

The BJP has yet to come out with its manifesto but in his election speeches across the country, Narendra Modi has promised economic development, jobs for the youth and a corruption-free government.

India’s polling days:

  • April 7 – 2 states, 6 constituencies
  • April 9 – 5 states, 7 constituencies
  • April 10 – 14 states, 92 constituencies
  • April 12 – 3 states, 5 constituencies
  • April 17 – 13 states, 142 constituencies
  • April 24 – 12 states, 117 constituencies
  • April 30 – 9 states, 89 constituencies
  • May 7 – 7 states, 64 constituencies
  • May 12 – 3 states, 41 constituencies
  • Counting of votes – May 16

Mickey Rooney dies aged 93

Hollywood legend Mickey Rooney has died aged 93, Los Angeles police say.

Mickey Rooney was with his family when he died at home on Sunday, April 6.

Born in Brooklyn on September 23, 1920, Mickey Rooney began his career aged 18 months in his parents’ vaudeville act, Yule and Carter, and never really retired.

By 1965, Mickey Rooney’s 200 films had earned more than $3 billion around the world.

Laurence Olivier once referred to Mickey Rooney as the greatest film actor America ever produced.

Mickey Rooney’s death was first reported by Variety magazine. The actor is said to have been ill for some time.

In a film and musical career spanning eight decades, Mickey Rooney was nominated for four Academy Awards and received two special Oscars, including one in 1983 for his body of work.

Mickey Rooney was married eight times, including actress Ava Gardner.

Asked once if he would marry all his wives again, the actor replied: “Absolutely. I loved every one of them.”

Initially named Joe Yule Junior, Mickey Rooney was barely 6 years old when he had his first film role as a cigar-smoking midget in Orchids and Ermine.

In 1937, he the part of Andy Hardy in A Family Affair. Playing the son of a small-town judge proved a huge box-office draw, and spawned a hit series lasting eight years.

At the same time, a series of barnyard musicals paired Mickey Rooney with another celebrated child star, Judy Garland.

By 1939, Mickey Rooney was established as the film industry’s top box office draw.

He enjoyed international triumph alongside Elizabeth Taylor in the 1944 movie National Velvet.

But despite his success, Mickey Rooney admitted his fame had forced him to grow up too quickly. By the time he was 30, the actor said he felt 100 years old.

The show business legend was declared bankrupt by the early 1960s, with much of his money going to alimony for his ex-wives and a reckless lifestyle.

However, Mickey Rooney’s career enjoyed a revival with the film Pete’s Dragon in 1977, and his hit show Sugar Babies which hit Broadway in the late 1970s.

True to his motto to “never retire but inspire”, Mickey Rooney continued to work in film, television and theatre well into his 80s.

Recipe: Italian Easter Bread Ring

Italian Easter Bread Ring

Ingredients:

5 eggs

1/4 cup white sugar

1 teaspoon salt

1 (.25 ounce) package active dry yeast

3 cups all-purpose flour

2/3 cup milk

2 tablespoons butter

2 eggs, room temperature

1/2 cup mixed candied fruit

1/3 cup chopped blanched almonds

1/2 teaspoon anise seed

2 tablespoons melted shortening

1 cup confectioners’ sugar

1 tablespoon whole milk

1/8 teaspoon vanilla extract

3 tablespoons multicolored sprinkles (jimmies)

Directions:

  1. Color the 5 eggs with egg dye. In a large mixing bowl, blend the white sugar, salt, and yeast well with 1 cup of the flour.
  2. In a saucepan, combine 2/3 cup milk and butter, heating slowly until liquid is warm and butter is melted. Pour the milk into the dry ingredients and beat 125 strokes with a wooden spoon. Add eggs and 1/2 cup flour or enough to make a thick batter. Beat vigorously for 2 minutes. Stir in enough flour to make a ball of dough that draws away from the sides of the bowl.
  3. Turn out onto a floured board and knead for about 10 minutes, working in additional flour to overcome stickiness. Place the dough in a greased bowl, turning to grease the top. Cover tightly with plastic wrap and put in a warm, draft-free place until doubled in bulk, about 1 hour.
  4. Meanwhile, combine the fruit, nuts, and anise seed.
  5. Punch down the dough and return it to a lightly floured board. Knead in the fruit mixture, keeping the syrupy pieces dusted with flour until they are worked into the dough. Divide the dough in half.
  6. Carefully roll each piece into a 24-inch rope

-the fruit and nuts will make this slightly difficult. Loosely twist the two ropes together and form a ring on a greased baking sheet. Pinch the ends together well. Brush the dough with melted shortening. Push aside the twist to make a place for each egg. Push eggs down carefully as far as possible. Cover the bread with wax paper and let rise in a warm, draft-free place until doubled in bulk, about 1 hour.

  7. Bake the bread in a preheated 350 degree F (175 degrees C) oven for about 35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in a twist comes out clean. Place on a wire rack to cool.
  8. Once the bread is cool, drizzle the icing on top between the eggs, and decorate with colored sprinkles. To make icing: mix together confectioners’ sugar, 1 tablespoon whole milk, and vanilla.

David Letterman reveals reasons behind his retirement

During Friday night’s Late Show monologue, David Letterman discussed his retirement and the reason for leaving his longtime show.

Cracking wise about telling CBS boss Leslie Moonves about his retirement, David Letterman – who announced his plans to step down next year during Thursday night’s show – said that he called Moonves to break the news.

“I said, <<I’m retiring>>, and there was a pause and he said, <<Who is this?>>” David Letterman cracked.

David Letterman, 66, then semi-addressed the reason for his retirement.

“People are saying to me, <<Honestly quit the wise remarks [and] screwing around, why did you decide to announce your retirement?>>” David Letterman noted.

He then claimed that the decision had come from a recent conversation with his makeup artist Jane.

“She says to me, <<Dave, there’s really nothing more I can do>>,” David Letterman joked.

Ukraine: Pro-Russian activists storm government buildings in Donetsk, Luhansk and Kharkiv

Pro-Russian protesters have stormed government buildings in eastern Ukrainian cities Donetsk, Luhansk, and Kharkiv.

Protesters clashed with police, waved Russian flags and called for a referendum on independence from Ukraine.

Ukraine’s acting President Oleksandr Turchynov called an emergency security meeting.

The unrest comes amid tensions between Russia and Ukraine over the removal of pro-Moscow President Viktor Yanukovych and Russia’s annexation of Crimea.

In Donetsk, about 50 people broke away from a rally of about 2,000 people in the city centre, and got past a police cordon to enter the regional administration building.

The activists shouted “Donetsk is a Russian city” and raised Russian flags above the building.

Some called for the region to have a referendum on the region’s independence from Ukraine.

A similar referendum held in the Crimean peninsula in March led to Russia’s annexation.

In Luhansk, near the Russian border, dozens of demonstrators stormed the offices of the state security agency.

Ukrainian media said protesters pelted the building with eggs, a smoke grenade and a firebomb.

Similar incidents were later reported in Kharkiv.

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin has vowed to protect Russian-speaking people in eastern Ukraine.

President Oleksandr Turchynov has cancelled a diplomatic trip to Lithuania to deal with the unrest, according to his press service.

The statement said Oleksandr Turchynov would hold an emergency meeting with the heads of security services.

Tensions are running high between Ukraine and Russia, with thousands of Russian soldiers still said to be deployed along the border.

Viktor Yanukovych was forced from office in February, following months of street protests.

The new administration has faced continuing opposition from Ukraine’s Russian-speaking regions, particularly in the east of the country.

Russia has said it will defend the rights of ethnic Russians in Ukraine – which it claims are under threat under the new government – but has said it will not send troops into the rest of the country.

Rwanda genocide commemorations in Kigali

People gathered for a Mass in Rwandan capital Kigali ahead of a week of official mourning to mark the 20th anniversary of the country’s genocide.

Meanwhile a diplomatic row has seen France pull out of the commemorative events.

The Mass at Sainte-Famille Catholic church in Kigali remembered those who died in the church itself or elsewhere in the country.

At least 800,000 people – mostly ethnic Tutsis and moderate Hutus – died at the hands of Hutu extremists in 1994.

Most of the victims of the genocide were attacked with machetes during 100 days of slaughter that began on April 6, 1994, shortly after Hutu President Juvenal Habyarimana was killed when his plane was shot down over the Rwandan capital.

Some Christian leaders were implicated in the violence.

A genocide survivor who attended the Mass, Innocent Muhozi, said: “Today’s Mass was about resurrection and I believe that one day, the souls of the people we lost will resurrect.

“This church has a very long history because many people died in it during genocide but some also survived it because they were in this church.”

Pope Francis, in his weekly address to the faithful at St Peter’s Square in the Vatican, spoke of the anniversary.

“On this occasion I would like to express my paternal closeness to the people of Rwanda, encouraging them to continue with determination and hope, the process of reconciliation that has already manifested its fruits, and the commitment of human and spiritual reconstruction of the country,” he said.

The killings in Rwanda ended in July 1994 when the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF), a Tutsi-led rebel movement that entered the country from Uganda, marched on Kigali and seized control of the country.

Yesterday, the French government announced it was pulling out of the 20th anniversary commemorations following an accusation by Rwandan President Paul Kagame – who led the RPF to victory – that France had participated in the mass killings.

Nigeria is Africa’s biggest economy following GDP rebasing

Nigeria has become Africa’s biggest economy after rebasing its GDP, leaving South Africa behind.

Nigerian GDP (Gross Domestic Product) now includes previously uncounted industries like telecoms, information technology, music, online sales, airlines, and film production.

GDP for 2013 totaled 80.3 trillion naira ($509.9 billion), the Nigerian statistics office said.

That compares with South Africa’s GDP of $370.3 billion at the end of 2013.

However, some economists point out that Nigeria’s economic output is underperforming because at 170 million people, its population is three times larger than South Africa’s.

On a per-capita basis, South Africa’s GDP numbers are three times larger than Nigeria’s.

And Nigerian financial analyst Bismarck Rewane called the revisions “a vanity”.

He added: “The Nigerian population is not better off tomorrow because of that announcement. It doesn’t put more money in the bank, more food in their stomach. It changes nothing.”

Rebasing is carried out so that a nation’s GDP statistics give the most up-to-date picture of an economy as possible.

Most countries do it at least every three years or so, but Nigeria had not updated the components in its GDP base year since 1990.

Then, Nigeria had one telecoms operator with around 300,000 phone lines. Now it has a whole mobile phone industry with tens of millions of subscribers.

Likewise, 24 years ago there was only one airline, and now there are many.

International aid donors are keen for more African countries to undertake this process regularly because it enables them to make better decisions when it comes to aid.

Peter Matthiessen dies from leukaemia at 86

Writer Peter Matthiessen, whose notable works include At Play in the Fields of the Lord, has died at the age of 86 following leukaemia.

The New York-born writer was also a committed environmentalist and adventurer, who wrote about his travels in the wilderness.

Among Peter Matthiessen’s other books were The Snow Leopard and Shadow Country.

Peter Matthiessen’s latest novel, In Paradise, is due to be published on Tuesday.

His publisher said the author had been diagnosed with leukaemia and had been ill “for some months” prior to his death at a New York hospital.

Peter Matthiessen’s notable works include At Play in the Fields of the Lord
Peter Matthiessen’s notable works include At Play in the Fields of the Lord

After graduating from Yale University, Peter Matthiessen travelled to France and co-founded literary journal The Paris Review, with fellow author George Plimpton.

Although the publication was a success – it is still running today – Peter Matthiessen yearned for the US and returned home, mixing with the likes of artists Jackson Pollock and Wilem de Kooning.

In the 1960s, Peter Matthiessen shunned his wealthy upbringing to embrace Buddhist teachings, becoming a Zen priest, and during the same decade began gaining acclaim for his writing.

At Play in the Fields of the Lord, published in 1961, told of missionaries and mercenaries working in Brazil.

The novel was turned into a film in 1991 – starring John Lithgow and Darryl Hannah – after the late producer Saul Zaentz spent more than 25 years trying to buy the rights.

Peter Matthiessen travelled to Antarctica, the Himalayas and Australia to write about the environment and the wilderness, as well as exploring wildlife in America.

The Snow Leopard – which won the National Book Award for non-fiction in 1980 – retold his two-month Himalayan trip to search for the elusive snow leopard.

In 2008, Peter Matthiessen published Shadow Country – which brought together his “Watson trilogy”, which he began in the 1980s, into one re-edited story. It went on to win the National Book prize.

Peter Matthiessen was married three times, and had four children.

Jordan: Syrian refugees clash with police at Zaatari camp

Violence broke out at the Zaatari camp in northern Jordan after Syrian refugees have clashed with police, officials say.

At least 22 Jordanian police have been taken to hospital after clashes.

Jordanian authorities denied reports that a Syrian refugee had been killed in the unrest.

Security forces used tear gas to disperse stone-throwing refugees who had set fire to tents and vehicles.

The sprawling camp, which houses some 106,000 refugees, has seen several protests since opening two years ago, mainly over poor living conditions.

Zaatari is located in the Jordanian desert, about 7.5 miles from the Syrian border.

Violence broke out at the Zaatari camp in northern Jordan after Syrian refugees have clashed with police
Violence broke out at the Zaatari camp in northern Jordan after Syrian refugees have clashed with police

It is the world’s second-largest refugee camp – behind Dadaab in eastern Kenya – and has become the fourth largest city in Jordan.

Jordanian authorities said the violence broke out after police arrested a group of refugees trying to leave the camp illegally.

“The rioters burned six tents and two caravans and tried to attack police stations,” the Public Security Directorate said in a statement.

Residents of Zaatari, however, claimed the clashes occurred because a Jordanian policeman had run over a Syrian child.

Eyewitnesses also said the number of refugees injured in the unrest was much higher than the three cases confirmed by officials.

Opened in July 2012 with some 100 refugee families, Zaatari is now made up of roughly 30,000 shelters and administration buildings.

It costs about $500,000 a day to run, with half a million pieces of bread and 4.2 million litres of water distributed daily.

Correspondents say life inside the camp can be harsh, as residents – mostly hailing from the Daraa governorate of Syria, face a number of challenges – the biggest being security.

A second overflow camp – Azraq – is under construction in the desert to meet demand. It too will have the capacity to host up to 130,000 people.

More than 2.5 million people have fled Syria since the civil war broke out there in March 2011.

Earlier this week, the UN confirmed that the number of Syrian refugees registered in Lebanon had surpassed one million, making it the highest per capita concentration of refugees worldwide.

This is followed by Jordan, which houses almost 600,000 refugees, Turkey, Iraq and Egypt.

“We tried to get Stevie many times,” said festival director Mathieu Jaton.

Stevie Wonder will play at the Swiss resort’s Stravinsky Auditorium on July 16, with seats priced at 450 Swiss francs ($470).

Paharrell Williams, who stole the show at this year’s Oscars with his performance of Despicable Me 2’s Happy, will perform at the festival on July 7.

“He is the artist we had to get this year,” Mathieu Jaton told Reuters.

“You hear Pharrell Williams everywhere on the radio and television. He has produced incredible pieces,” he added, alluding to Pharrell Williams’ string of hit performances on tracks like Daft Punk’s Get Lucky and Robin Thicke’s Blurred Lines.

Robin Thicke will also perform at the event, as will Chris Rea – who returns to the Montreux stage for the first time in 14 years.

Announcing the line-up, Mathieu Jaton spoke about the on-going work to digitize the 6,000 hours of recorded music from Montreux concerts across the years.

The festival tweeted a link to a picture on its website, before Kasabian confirmed on their own Twitter feed that they are Sunday’s Pyramid Stage headliners and will close the festival.

The line-up also features Pixies, Jake Bugg, Robert Plant and James Blake.

Friday night headliners Arcade Fire and Dolly Parton were among those already confirmed to play the festival in June.

Other new acts announced include MGMT, Brian Ferry, Kelis, Metronomy and De La Soul.

Rudimental, Manic Street Preachers, London Grammar and Ed Sheeran are also set to play across more than 100 stages at the festival in Somerset from June 25 to June 29.

Saturday night’s Pyramid Stage headliner is still yet to be announced, although organizer Emily Eavis said there was definitely one in place.

“We’ve got it all booked, it was all confirmed a couple of weeks ago. We can’t give you that yet, just for contractual reasons, but it will be with you soon,” she said.

“The full lineup, the thousands and thousands of acts, will be with you in May,” Emily Eavis added.

“This is a few handpicked acts to give you a taster.”

Recently, acts such as Lana Del Rey and the Black Keys had confirmed their own appearances, joining Lily Allen, Disclosure, Blondie, Suzanne Vega and Warpaint on the bill.

In February, Dolly Parton said she was “incredibly excited” to be playing the Sunday afternoon “legend slot” on the Pyramid Stage, following last year’s appearance from her friend and contemporary Kenny Rogers.

White Stripes star Jack White is set to play an exclusive UK festival date at Glastonbury’s Pyramid stage.

Tickets for this year’s Glastonbury Festival sold out in just one hour and 27 minutes in October, despite “technical difficulties” with online ticketing site See Tickets.

Festival goers who have paid their deposit have until just before midnight on Monday, April 7, to pay their balance. Remaining tickets go on resale on April 24 for coach packages and April 27 for standard tickets.

France pulls out of Rwanda genocide memorial after President Paul Kagame’s comments

France has announced that it is pulling out of the 20th anniversary commemorations on Monday for the Rwandan genocide.

The French government’s decision follows an accusation by Rwandan President Paul Kagame that France participated in the mass killings in 1994.

Paul Kagame has previously made similar allegations, which France has denied.

The French foreign ministry said the remarks went against reconciliation efforts between the two countries.

French Justice Minister Christiane Taubira has cancelled her plans to attend the events in Kigali on Monday, foreign ministry spokesman Romain Nadal says.

Speaking to the French-language weekly news magazine Jeune Afrique, Paul Kagame denounced the “direct role of Belgium and France in the political preparation for the genocide”.

Rwanda was a Belgian colony until 1962.

Rwandan President Paul Kagame accused France of participating in the mass killings in 1994
Rwandan President Paul Kagame accused France of participating in the mass killings in 1994

In the interview, due to be published on Sunday but carried out on March 27, Paul Kagame is quoted as saying that, 20 years on, “the only plausible reproach in [France’s] eyes is in not having done enough to save lives during the genocide”.

It comes as Rwanda prepares to mark the 20th anniversary of the atrocities that claimed at least 800,000 lives – mostly ethnic Tutsis and moderate Hutus – over a period of about 100 days.

The violence was triggered by the death of President Juvenal Habyarimana, an ethnic Hutu who was killed in a plane crash on April 6, 1994.

It came to an end after Paul Kagame’s Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) – a Tutsi-led rebel group – defeated government troops in July that year.

His party still controls the government and has long accused France – an ally of Juvenal Habyarimana’s government at the time – of aiding the genocide.

In recent years there has been a thaw in relations between the two countries, with a visit by Paul Kagame to Paris in 2011 and the establishment by France of a genocide investigation unit.

Last month, a Paris court sentenced former Rwandan spy chief Pascal Simbikangwa to 25 years in jail for his role in the genocide – the first such conviction in France.

France has acknowledged that serious errors were made during the genocide in Rwanda.

A Rwandan commission in 2008 said France was aware of preparations for the genocide and helped train ethnic Hutu militias who participated in killings.

Paris said its forces helped protect civilians as part of an UN-mandated intervention in Rwanda. But Paul Kagame said French troops had protected the militias carrying out the killings.

Hungary elections 2014: Viktor Orban and Fidesz tipped to win another term in office

Hungary’s PM Viktor Orban and his right-wing Fidesz party are seeking another term in office in elections on Sunday.

Fidesz is expected to win between 45 and 50% of the vote, polls suggest.

The centre-left opposition is facing a close race for second place with the far-right Jobbik party.

The Hungarian left has never fully recovered from its heavy defeat in the 2010 ballot, in which Viktor Orban swept to power with a two-thirds majority.

The election is mainly being fought over the state of the economy, correspondents say.

Socialist leader Attila Mesterhazy, who heads an opposition coalition of five parties, said he could still defeat Viktor Orban, despite trailing behind in opinion polls with around 25%.

“I don’t care about the polls, people are afraid of expressing their views,” Attila Mesterhazy said Saturday at a small rally in the capital, Budapest.

“I believe I will be prime minister.”

Critics say the state of democracy in Hungary has been eroded under Viktor Orban’s premiership.

The opposition – composed of five leftist and centrist parties – also accuses Viktor Orban of curtailing civil liberties and harming free speech.

But Fidesz has insisted that reform was needed in order to complete the work of eradicating the legacy of Communism from the country, and reduce the budget deficit to below the EU’s required 3% of gross domestic product.

Viktor Orban’s populist and Eurosceptic approach has proven popular with many Hungarians.

“The left had eight years to show what they can do, and they showed us all right,” Viktor Orban told Hungarian media on Saturday.

“Why on Earth should we believe that the same people and the same parties would not do the same if given another opportunity?”

Jobbik is also expected to do well in Sunday’s election, potentially receiving up to 20% of the vote.

Observers say the far-right party’s adoption of a softer image has paid dividends, as a recent opinion poll found leader Gabor Vona to be the most popular opposition politician.

HIV home test kits sales approved in UK for first time

0

HIV home tests can be bought over the counter in the UK for the first time.

However, none is available yet in the country.

The UK made a change in the law meaning it is now legal for people to test and diagnose themselves at home.

Previously, people could carry out tests they ordered online at home and send away their results, but were diagnosed over the phone.

It is hoped the move will help the UK’s 25,000 undiagnosed HIV-positive people.

No tests have yet been developed that pass European guidelines, said the government’s health regulator.

Home testing for HIV was approved by the UK’s government last September but the law only came into effect on Sunday.

The Terrence Higgins Trust HIV charity said the tests could be introduced into the UK this year or in early 2015.

The UK is leading Europe in making the kits available over the counter, but they were introduced to the US in 2012.

Testing could involve taking a small drop of blood from a finger, or a swab from the inside of the mouth.

MH370: Second black box ping detected

Australia’s Air Chief Marshal Angus Houston coordinating the search for missing Malaysian Airlines plane say a Chinese ship has detected a pulse signal for a second time, within hours of it being heard earlier on Saturday.

ACM Angus Houston called the discovery in the southern Indian Ocean an “important and encouraging lead”.

He warned that the data were still unverified.

British naval ship HMS Echo is sailing to the area to investigate further.

It is expected to arrive in the early hours of Monday.

Australian aircraft were also on their way, ACM Angus Houston told reporters. Australian naval vessel Ocean Shield would be heading to the latest search area once it had investigated a third acoustic detection elsewhere.

Both HMS Echo and ADV Ocean Shield have technology able to detect underwater signals emitted by data recorders.

Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 disappeared on March 8 with 239 people on board. Investigators believe it crashed in the Indian Ocean although no confirmed debris has been found. The battery-powered signal from the “black box” recorders fades after 30 days.

After confirming details of the first pulse detected on Saturday which had “characteristics consistent with” an aircraft’s flight recorder, Angus Houston told a news briefing at Pearce Air Base near Perth of a second signal.

“[Saturday] afternoon Perth time, there was another acoustic detection less than 2 km [1.2 miles] from the original.”

The second signal lasted about 90 seconds, he said.

The search coordinator insisted the latest developments should be treated as unverified “until such time as we can provide an unequivocal determination”.

“We are working in a very big ocean and within a very large search area, and so far since the aircraft went missing we have had very few leads which allow us to narrow the search area,” he said.

“I assure you that we will follow up and exhaust every credible lead that we receive.”

A dozen military aircraft and 13 ships are already searching three areas about 1,240 miles north-west of the Australian city of Perth.

Australian PM Tony Abbott earlier said he was “hopeful but by no means certain” that the signal detected on Saturday was linked to missing flight MH370.

Haixun 01 picked up the first so-called “ping” signal at about 25 degrees south latitude and 101 degrees east longitude, state-run Xinhua news agency said.

The signal reportedly had a frequency of 37.5 kHz – the same as that emitted by the flight recorders.

Three people on board the boat were said to have heard the pings, which were not recorded as they came suddenly.

Xinhua also reported that a Chinese military plane had spotted a number of white floating objects about 60 miles away a few hours earlier.

Afghanistan elections 2014: More than 7 million people voted in presidential poll

More than 7 million people out of an estimated eligible 12 million voted in Afghanistan’s election for a new president, the country’s electoral commission says.

It is Afghanistan’s first transfer of power via the ballot box.

There are reports of ballot paper shortages and sporadic violence from across the country.

Eight candidates are seeking to succeed President Hamid Karzai, barred by the constitution from seeking a third term.

Hamid Karzai has declared Saturday’s poll “a success”. Final results may not be declared for days.

A massive operation was launched to thwart the Taliban, who had vowed to disrupt the election, and heavy rainfall may have depressed turnout in some areas.

Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) chairman Ahmad Yousuf Nouristani said its latest estimates were that more than seven million people had voted by 17:00 local time, when the polls had officially closed and counting began.

Two-thirds of those who voted were men and one third women, the commission believes. Some polling stations stayed open until 21:00 to allow everyone queuing to vote.

“This election was a message to the enemies of Afghanistan,” Ahmad Yousuf Nouristani said.

“With this determination of the honorable people of Afghanistan, the enemies were defeated.”

IEC secretary Ziaul Haq Amarkhel, asked to comment on widespread reports of polling stations running out of ballot papers, said this information was “false”.

Earlier there were reports of polling centers running out of ballots hours before the polls closed in many areas, including Kabul, northern Takhar province, north-eastern Badakhshan province, eastern Paktia province, and Nimroz province in the south-west – where one man, Abdul Ahad, said he and 15 family members had been to every polling centre in their district in an attempt to vote, but all of them had run out of ballot papers.

The biggest military operation since the fall of the Taliban in 2001 was rolled out for the vote. All 400,000 of Afghanistan’s police and soldiers were said to be on duty for the election.

Traffic was prevented from entering the Afghan capital from midday on Friday, with police checkpoints erected at every junction.

However, in parts of the capital voters could be seen queuing an hour before polls opened and there was a good-natured, almost carnival atmosphere, with many people on the streets.

Across the country, 10% of stations were declared unsafe to open by the election commission.

The Afghan ministry of defense said three major incidents had taken place on polling day.

Fears of fraud, which have marred previous polls in Afghanistan, resurfaced with reports from the southern province of Kandahar that police were preventing voters and observers from reaching polling stations.

The interior ministry said two police officers were arrested in Wardak province for stuffing ballot boxes.

Concerns were also raised before the poll about the possible presence of “ghost” polling stations as well as the fact that the number of election cards in circulation appeared to be vastly more than the number of registered voters.

Speaking after the polls closed, Hamid Karzai said: “Despite the cold and rainy weather and possible terrorist attack, our sisters and brothers nationwide took in this election and their participation is a step forward and it is a success for Afghanistan.”

President Barack Obama, in a statement issued by the White House, said: “We commend the Afghan people, security forces, and elections officials on the turnout for today’s vote – which is in keeping with the spirited and positive debate among candidates and their supporters in the run-up to the election.

“These elections are critical to securing Afghanistan’s democratic future, as well as continued international support.”

There are eight candidates for president, but three are considered frontrunners – former foreign ministers Abdullah Abdullah and Zalmai Rassoul, and former Finance Minister Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai.

Dr. Abdullah Abdullah has fought a polished campaign, Ashraf Ghani has strong support among the new urban youth vote and Dr. Zalmai Rassoul is believed to be favored by Hamid Karzai.

However, no candidate is expected to secure more than the 50% of the vote needed to be the outright winner, which means there is likely to be a second round run-off on May 28.

Pharrell Williams’ Happy video inspires 1,000 remakes

Fan-made versions of Pharrell Williams’ hit video Happy have now passed 1,000 across the globe.

Pharrell Williams’ Happy video was released last November and became an immediate sensation with over 150 million views on YouTube.

The video’s simple message, and low-fi footage of ordinary people dancing as they go about their business, make it ideal for amateur re-makes.

The project has been initiated by a French couple, designers Loic Fontaine and Julie Fersing. They were stunned by the number of people creating their own versions, but understood its appeal. They began adding them to WeAreHappyFrom.com, a site they made to showcase the huge number of videos being made.

“One of the fundamental things about the project is that it’s not commercial, religious, or political. It’s just a message to say <<we are happy, we are happy>>,” said Loic Fontaine.

The same principles apply to the videos that appear on the site – and so the number does not include some of the better known versions which have explicit political messages.

Earlier this week, a group in Brazil created Porto (un)Happy which aimed to highlight the poor conditions in Porto, one of the cities that will host the World Cup just three months from now.

A map on Loic Fontaine’s site shows the location of each video – including 170 from France alone, 98 from Germany, and 13 from the UK.

This week the 1,000th video was added, and the total currently sits at 1,032.

Launched at the end of January, the couple thought the trend would last for a month at most.

Between 20 and 40 new versions are added to the site each day, and the rate shows now signs of slowing.

Pakistani Christian couple sentenced to death for blasphemy

A Pakistani Christian couple has been sentenced to death for blasphemy after allegedly sending a text message insulting the Prophet Muhammad.

Shafqat Emmanuel and Shagufta Kausar were found guilty of sending the text message to the imam of their local mosque.

Allegations of blasphemy against Islam are taken very seriously in Pakistan.

Several recent cases have prompted international concern about the application of blasphemy laws.

The imam brought a complaint against the couple last July.

The couple’s lawyer said he would appeal against the sentences and said the trial had not been conducted fairly.

Pakistan has a de facto moratorium on the death penalty so it is unlikely the couple will be executed.

They come from the town of Gojra in Punjab, previously the scene of communal violence.

In 2009, the rumored desecration of a copy of the Koran led to a mob burning nearly 40 houses and a church in Gojra. At least eight members of Christian community died in the violence.

Since the 1990s, scores of Christians have been convicted for desecrating the Koran or blaspheming against the Prophet Mohammed.

While most of them have been sentenced to death by the lower courts, many sentences have been overturned due to lack of evidence.

Critics argue that Pakistan’s blasphemy laws are frequently misused to settle personal scores and that members of minority groups are also unfairly targeted.

Muslims constitute a majority of those prosecuted, followed by the minority Ahmadi community.

Darth Vader’s bid for Ukraine’s presidency rejected

Darth Vader’s bid for Ukraine’s presidency has been rejected.

The man, who appears in the costume of Darth Vader and is often accompanied by people dressed in other Star Wars outfits, was nominated for the presidency by the Internet Party of Ukraine. Earlier he told the party’s congress that he wanted to turn Ukraine into “a galactic empire”.

Ukraine’s Central Electoral Commission says parts of Darth Vader’s application were “questionable” and some paperwork was probably forged. Apparently, the man is really an electrician called Viktor Shevchenko, who changed his name to Darth Vader in March.

At least one commission member suggests Darth Vader’s campaign could be an attempt to discredit the upcoming election – possibly by Russia, which does not recognize the Ukraine’s interim government.

“It may seem like an innocent joke, but someone paid 2.5 million hryvnyas [$227,000] for this joke,” says Ihor Zhydenko, referring to the deposit that must be given along with the application.

Ihor Zhydenko adds that Darth Vader might run for the presidency in Russia, where he has received extensive media coverage.

“They already have little green men,” he says, referring to Russian troops in the Crimea region.

“Such a commander-in-chief would be appropriate.”

Twenty-three candidates have been registered to run in the snap presidential election in Ukraine on May 25.

Thailand: Red Shirts warn of civil war threat

Thailand’s pro-government Red Shirt movement has warned that any attempt to oust PM Yingluck Shinawatra could trigger a civil war.

The movement’s leaders issued the warning at a rally outside Bangkok – the first staged by the Red Shirts near the capital since violent clashes broke out in November.

Opponents of Yingluck Shinawatra and her party have filed legal cases against her.

Months of anti-government mass protests have failed to unseat her.

Speaking to a crowd of tens of thousands, Jatuporn Promphan, the chairman of the pro-government United Front for Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD), said judicial institutions were trying “to take over power without elections”.

“What we are most concerned about – that we want to warn all sides against – is a civil war, which we do not want to happen,” he said.

“It will happen if there is a coup and democracy is stolen.”

“What we are most concerned about – that we want to warn all sides against – is a civil war, which we do not want to happen,” he said.

“It will happen if there is a coup and democracy is stolen.”

Yingluck Shinawatra is facing mounting legal cases – including charges of neglect of duty and abuse of power – that correspondents say could see her removed from office in coming weeks.

Meanwhile anti-government protesters have continued their own demonstrations from their headquarters in Bangkok’s central Lumpini Park.

The government called an election in February, but that was obstructed by protesters.

Since then Thailand has been in a state of paralysis.

Yingluck Shinawatra’s party has won the last five elections, but her opponents argue that Thailand’s democracy is so deeply flawed that it must be reformed before another election can be held.

Another factor driving the conflict is acute anxiety over the ailing health of King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

The Red Shirts at Saturday’s rally openly showed support for his son Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn. He is the designated heir but some among traditional elite are believed to oppose him.

Ukraine rejects Russia gas price hike and threatens legal action

Ukraine has rejected Russia’s Gazprom gas price hike and threatened legal action.

Ukraine’s interim PM Arseniy Yatsenyuk said Moscow’s hikes were a form of “economic aggression”.

His energy minister said Ukraine would try to negotiate a gas deal, but warned that if talks failed Ukrainians should prepare for Russia to cut off supplies.

Moscow says the price change is due to Kiev’s failure to pay its bills.

Russia’s state-controlled company Gazprom has raised the cost of gas to Ukraine by 81% to $485.50 (354.33 euros) from $268.50 for 1,000 cubic metres.

The increase comes amid tense diplomatic relations following Moscow’s annexation of the Crimean peninsula.

Arseniy Yatsenyuk said Russia was trying to punish the new leaders in Kiev after last month’s removal of the Moscow-backed government of President Viktor Yanukovych.

“Political pressure is unacceptable, and we are not accepting the price of $500,” he told ministers on Saturday.

“Russia was unable to seize Ukraine by means of military aggression. Now they are implementing plans to seize Ukraine through economic aggression.”

Arseniy Yatsenyuk said the price Russia was demanding was the highest in Europe, and that Ukraine was prepared to continue to buy at the previous rate of $268.50.

Energy minister Yuriy Prodan said that if no deal was reached, Ukraine would take action at an arbitration court in Stockholm.

“We are not trying to break our contract but to set up a fair price,” he said, adding that that Ukrainians should prepare for the possibility of supplies to be cut off.

The price increase could also affect gas supplies to Europe, as 40% of Russian gas to the continent travels through Ukraine.

Yuriy Prodan has said Ukraine would meet its commitments to supply gas to Europe no matter what happened.

Gazprom says Ukraine’s gas debts to Russia stand at just over $1.7 billion.
