HP to cut 16,000 more jobs

0

Hewlett-Packard (HP) announced an 18% rise in profits to $1.3 billion for the second quarter in a statement that was accidently released before US stock markets closed.

The tech giant said that despite rising profits, it plans to lay off an additional 11,000 to 16,000 workers.

HP had previously announced it would cut 34,000 jobs as part of a restructuring announced in 2012.

HP said that despite rising profits, it plans to lay off an additional 11,000 to 16,000 workers

Shares in HP fell after the early release of the news.

HP CEO Meg Whitman said in a statement: “I’m pleased to report that HP’s turnaround remains on track.”

“We’re gradually shaping HP into a more nimble, lower-cost, more customer- and partner-centric company.”

However, analysts were disappointed by HP’s revenue growth, which fell 1% from the same period a year ago to $27.3 billion.

HP has been hit hard by declining PC sales as consumers shift towards devices such as tablets and smartphones.

Meg Whitman has tried to shift the firm’s focus to computing equipment and networking gear for business clients.

HP began a restructuring plan in 2012 that was designed to simplify the company’s business processes, accelerate innovation, lower costs and deliver better results.

Meg Whitman said the turnaround remains on track, and added: “With each passing quarter, HP is improving its systems, structures and core go-to-market capabilities.

“We’re gradually shaping HP into a more nimble, lower-cost, more customer- and partner-centric company that can successfully compete across a rapidly changing IT landscape.”

HP has not specified when it expects to see the full results of its restructuring strategy. But analysts are suggesting the company should probably take a closer look at its product mix.

HP’s personal systems division was the only segment that showed a gain in revenue in the second quarter. Other divisions, namely printing as well as enterprise group and services posted a drop in revenue.

The decline in revenue is one of the main reasons HP is cutting jobs.

McDonald’s investors back executive pay plan despite protests

McDonald’s investors have backed an executive pay plan at the company’s annual meeting despite protests.

Nearly 94% of shareholders voted in favor of the plan, which determines chief executive Don Thompson’s pay as well as a formula for paying top management.

Last year, Don Thompson was paid a total of $9.5 million.

The vote came a day after more than 100 demonstrators seeking better pay for McDonald’s workers were arrested.

Addressing the protests, Don Thompson reportedly told investors at the meeting: “We respect the fact that they want to challenge us relative to wages.

“We pay fair and competitive wages and we provide opportunity, and we provide job opportunities and training for those entering the workforce.”

In addition to protests by workers and labor organizers, who are demanding the chain raise the minimum wage paid to workers to $15 from the US federal minimum of $7.25, McDonald’s has seen falling sales in the US.

McDonald’s has also been hit by the increasing cost of beef, and criticism from public health experts over its advertising.

Liu Han: Chinese mining tycoon sentenced to death for murder

Mining tycoon Liu Han, believed to have links to China’s former security chief Zhou Yongkang, has been sentenced to death.

According to Xinhua agency, a Hubei court has found Liu Han and his brother Liu Wei guilty of “organizing and leading mafia-style crime and murder”.

The two men were among a group of 36 people charged with similar crimes.

Liu Han’s sentencing is believed to be part of a wider corruption crackdown linked to ZhouYongkang’s network.

The court verdict stated that, among other things, Liu Han and his group had “in an organized fashion obtained financial gains via illegal activities”.

They had also on multiple occasions “committed murder, harm and illegal detention”.

The verdict stated they relied on “the cover-ups and collusion of government employees” to illegally control gaming machines in Guanghan in Sichuan province.

Liu Han, who is the former head of mining conglomerate Sichuan Hanlong Group, was ranked 148th on Forbes‘ list of the richest Chinese business people in 2012.

His former company once tried to take over Australian miner Sundance Resources Ltd.

Chinese state media said previously that the Sichuan-based gang had had strong political ties that played a role in Liu Han’s appointment as a delegate in Sichuan’s political advisory body.

In recent months, several top officials from Sichuan province linked to Zhou Yongkang have come under scrutiny.

Zhou Yongkang was the party secretary in Sichuan province before becoming head of China’s Public Security Ministry in 2003.

In April, China announced it had removed from office Guo Yongxiang, a former Sichuan vice-governor, and that Sichuan’s former deputy party chief Li Chuncheng was being investigated for bribery.

Speculation has swirled for months that Zhou Yongkang is being investigated for corruption, although none of the rumors have been confirmed officially.

Thailand coup: Yingluck Shinawatra summoned by army

Ousted PM Yingluck Shinawatra has appeared at a military facility in Bangkok, a day after Thailand’s army took power in a coup.

Yingluck Shinawatra is one of more than 100 political figures summoned by the army.

The army has banned 155 prominent political figures from leaving the country without permission.

On Thursday the military suspended the constitution, banned gatherings and detained politicians, saying order was needed after months of turmoil.

Yingluck Shinawatra is one of more than 100 political figures summoned by the army

On Friday afternoon it appeared Yingluck Shianwatra had left the location where she had been summoned and was going to another military location.

Some pro-government lawmakers have now gone into hiding.

The coup, which followed months of anti-government protests, has drawn widespread international criticism.

It came two days after the army declared martial law.

US Secretary of State John Kerry said there was “no justification” for the coup, adding that $10 million in bilateral aid could be suspended.

The UN urged a “prompt return to constitutional, civilian, democratic rule”.

Thais, meanwhile, spent the night under a curfew which ran from 22:00 to 05:00. Bangkok was reported to be largely peaceful.

The anti-government movement has claimed victory and sent its supporters home.

Military leader General Prayuth Chan-Ocha – who has appointed himself the new prime minister – said troops were taking power “in order for the country to return to normal quickly”.

“All Thais must remain calm and government officials must work as normal,” he said in a televised address.

Political factions had been holding talks for two days. As soon as the coup was announced, several key figures were detained.

The military then issued a bulletin spelling out the key points of the takeover:

  • Curfew nationwide from 22:00 to 05:00
  • General Prayuth Chan-Ocha to head ruling National Peace and Order Maintaining Council
  • Senate and courts to continue operating
  • 2007 constitution suspended except for chapter on monarchy
  • Political gatherings of more than five people banned, with penalties of up to a one-year jail term, 10,000 baht ($300) fine, or both
  • Social media platforms could be blocked if they carry material with provocative content

Thailand’s army, which has staged at least 12 coups since the end of the absolute monarchy in 1932, acted after months of political deadlock.

Listeria: Sherman Produce and Lansal in voluntary recall of walnuts and hummus

0

Food companies Sherman Produce and Lansal have issued voluntary recalls of walnuts and hummus dips sold at major retailers after Listeria was detected in a sampling of the products, the FDA said on Thursday.

The recalls come weeks after Wal-Mart settled lawsuits with the families of 23 people who died from a 2011 Listeria outbreak linked to cantaloupe grown at a Colorado farm and sold by the retailer.

St. Louis-based Sherman Produce Co said it would begin recalling 241 cases of bulk walnuts, after a recent routine sampling of the product purchased by stores in Missouri and Illinois revealed traces of Listeria, the FDA said in a statement.

Massachusetts prepared foods manufacturer Lansal Inc, commonly known as Hot Mama’s Foods, said it would voluntarily pull hummus and dip products sold at Target, Trader Joe’s and other retailers, the administration said.

Lansal launched the recall of about 14,860 pounds of hummus after a single 10-ounce container of Target Archer Farms Traditional Hummus surveyed by the Texas Department of Health tested positive for Listeria, the administration said.

Listeria monocytogenes can lead to serious, even fatal, infections especially in young children, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems. Infections can have particularly harmful effects for pregnant women, including miscarriage and stillbirths.

No illnesses tied to the Sherman Produce walnuts or Lansal hummus products have been reported, the FDA said.

The FDA urged purchasers of the products to “dispose of them or return them to the place of purchase for a full refund”.

Isidro Garcia accused of kidnapping a teenager and holding her captive for 10 years

Isidro Garcia, the man accused of kidnapping a teenager and holding her captive for 10 years and forcing her to marry him, has been charged in a California court.

Isidro Garcia, 42, has been charged with rape, lewd acts on a minor, and kidnapping to commit a s**ual offence.

The woman, now 25, had a child with the alleged kidnapper. She contacted police after getting in touch with her sister on Facebook, authorities said.

Isidro Garcia denies all the charges and his lawyer said the woman had lied.

Outside court on Thursday, Charles Frisco said his client never hit his wife and would never have prevented her from leaving.

The woman was lying about enduring physical and s**ual abuse because the couple was breaking up, Charles Frisco added.

According to police in southern California, the abuse began in 2004, when Isidro Garcia was dating the victim’s mother and residing with her and her daughters in Santa Ana, a city in Orange County.

The police allege that Isidro Garcia began assaulting the victim that June, only four months after she arrived in the US from Mexico.

In August, Isidro Garcia assaulted the victim’s mother and drugged the teenager, driving her 26 miles north to Compton, in Los Angeles county, where he locked her in a garage, police said.

Isidro Garcia allegedly told the victim her family had given up looking for her. The woman twice tried to escape but he beat her severely, police said.

On Wednesday, Cpl Anthony Bertagna of the Santa Ana Police Department told reporters Isidro Garcia had “brainwashed” her and threatened to have her family deported.

Anthony Bertagna said that in 2007, Isidro Garcia forced the woman into a marriage, using documents he obtained in Mexico, and in 2012 the two had a child.

Recently, she contacted her sister on Facebook and was told that her mother had indeed been trying to find her, using a Spanish-language newspaper and television station.

Malia Obama learning to drive

0

First Lady Michelle Obama has announced that her daughter Malia will start driving this summer.

Michelle Obama commented on Malia’s milestone in a taped interview broadcast Tuesday by the entertainment news show Access Hollywood. It was a joint interview with actress Sarah Jessica Parker about the role of arts in education, but host Billy Bush could not resist asking Michelle Obama about her daughters, Malia, 15, and Sasha, 12.

Michelle Obama said Sasha loves dancing and does so several times a week in an organized program.

The first lady said her girls are like other teens in that they are anxiously counting down to the start of summer and getting ready for camp and internships.

“One child is going to be driving this summer,” the first lady said, jokingly adding: “Look out.”

Asked whether Secret Service agents would be in the back seat when Malia is behind the wheel, Michelle Obama said only that “we’ve got a plan”.

Malia Obama turns 16 on July 4, making her eligible for a learner’s permit in the District of Columbia.

Michelle Obama dodged questions about whether there is dating at the White House.

“You just want me to get pushed off the Truman Balcony,” Michelle Obama joked, suggesting that could be her punishment for revealing anything about her daughters’ dating lives.

Facebook announces new default settings and privacy checkup tool

Facebook has announced new default settings and a privacy checkup tool.

On Thursday, before the company’s annual shareholders’ meeting, Facebook announced that posts from new users will only be shared with “Friends” unless they change the default settings and choose “Public”.

Facebook announced that posts from new users will only be shared with Friends unless they change the default settings and choose Public

Before, it was the other way around, something that caused privacy concerns because new users might not understand that “Public” meant that people outside of their social circle could see their photos and status updates.

“While some people want to post to everyone, others have told us that they are more comfortable sharing with a smaller group, like just their friends,” Facebook wrote in a statement.

“We recognize that it is much worse for someone to accidentally share with everyone when they actually meant to share just with friends, compared with the reverse.”

That should make it easier for Facebook newbies to avoid sharing vacation photos with people they don’t know. But even longtime Facebook users can get confused over what exactly they are sharing.

For them, Facebook is releasing a new “privacy checkup tool” that will take users through who is seeing their posts, what apps they are using, and what private information they might be sharing on their profile.

Chikungunya: New Caribbean virus with rapid spreading makes thousands of victims

Thousands of people in Carribean hospitals are the victims of a virus with a long and unfamiliar name that has been spread rapidly by mosquitoes across the islands after the first locally transmitted case was confirmed in December.

They suffer searing headaches, a burning fever and so much pain in their joints they can barely walk or use their hands. It’s like having a terrible flu combined with an abrupt case of arthritis.

The virus is chikungunya, derived from an African word that loosely translates as “contorted with pain”. People encountering it in the Caribbean for the first time say the description is fitting. While the virus is rarely fatal it is extremely debilitating.

Outbreaks of the virus have long made people miserable in Africa and Asia. But it is new to the Caribbean, with the first locally transmitted case documented in December in French St. Martin, likely brought in by an infected air traveler. Health officials are now working feverishly to educate the public about the illness, knock down the mosquito population, and deal with an onslaught of cases.

Authorities are attempting to control mosquitoes throughout the Caribbean, from dense urban neighborhoods to beach resorts. There have been no confirmed cases of local transmission of chikungunya on the US mainland, but experts say the high number of travelers to the region means that could change as early as this summer.

Chikungunya virus is spread by two species of mosquitoes, aedes aegypti and aedes albopictus
Chikungunya virus is spread by two species of mosquitoes, aedes aegypti and aedes albopictus

So far, there are no signs the virus is keeping visitors away though some Caribbean officials warn it might if it is not controlled.

“We need to come together and deal with this disease,” said Dominica Tourism Minister Ian Douglas.

The Pan American Health Organization reports more than 55,000 suspected and confirmed cases since December throughout the islands. It has also reached French Guiana, the first confirmed transmission on the South American mainland.

“It’s building up like a snowball because of the constant movement of people,” said Jacqueline Medina, a specialist at the Instituto Technologico university in the Dominican Republic, where some hospitals report more than 100 new cases per day.

Chikungunya was identified in Africa in 1953 and is found throughout the tropics of the Eastern Hemisphere. It is spread by two species of mosquitoes, aedes aegypti and aedes albopictus. It’s also a traveler-borne virus under the right circumstances.

It can spread to a new area if someone has it circulating in their system during a relatively short period of time, roughly 2-3 days before the onset of symptoms to 5 days after, and then arrives to an area with the right kind of mosquitoes.

For years, there have been sporadic cases of travelers diagnosed with chikungunya but without local transmission.

The two species of mosquitoes that spread chikungunya are found in the southern and eastern US and the first local transmissions could occur this summer given the large number of American travelers to the Caribbean.

Already, the Florida Department of Health has reported at least four imported cases from travelers to Haiti, the Dominican Republic and Dominica.

Around the Caribbean, local authorities have been spraying fogs of pesticides and urging people to remove standing pools of water where mosquitoes breed.

An estimated 60-90% of those infected show symptoms, compared to around 20% for dengue, which is common in the region. There is no vaccine and the only cure is treatment for the pain and fluid loss.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev left note in boat

According to court documents, Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev wrote a note declaring “we Muslims are one body” as he emerged from the boat where he had hidden from investigators.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 20, wrote about his dead brother, Tamerlan: “I do not mourn because his soul is very much alive. God has a plan for each person. Mine was to hide in this boat and shed some light on our actions.”

Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, died on his way to the hospital after the bombings in April 2013. Dzhokar Tsarnaev is charged with using a weapon of mass destruction resulting in the deaths of a boy and three other people.

In his note, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev added: “…we Muslims are one body, you hurt one you hurt us all… know you are fighting men who look into the barrel of your gun and see heaven, now how can you compete with that.”

The court documents cited by WHDH were filed Wednesday by prosecutors opposing a motion from Dzhokhar Tsarnaev’s lawyers to suppress statements he made at the time of his arrest, claiming he had made them under duress.

During those interviews, court documents allege, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev “readily admitted involvement” in the bombings and remained “responsive, coherent, and clearheaded” throughout the questioning.

Ukraine: At least 14 people died in Volnovakha checkpoint attack

At least 14 soldiers died in a dawn attack on a checkpoint in eastern Ukraine.

This is the worst loss of life for Ukrainian government forces to date.

Heavily armed militants attacked the checkpoint in the Volnovakha area, in one of four attacks reported overnight in eastern Ukraine.

The attacks come just three days before Ukraine’s presidential election.

Ukraine’s interim PM Arseny Yatseniuk has called for an emergency session of the UN Security Council, saying he has evidence of Russian involvement in the violence.

Russia appears to be withdrawing troops from its border with Ukraine, easing fears of a military intervention like in Crimea in March.

NATO chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen said in a tweet that Russian troop activity near the Ukraine border might suggest that some Russian forces were preparing to pull back.

Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered troops near the border to withdraw to their bases earlier this week. Correspondents say removing the troops – estimated to number 40,000 – could help de-escalate the Ukraine crisis.

Ukrainians go to the polls on Sunday to choose a new president but voting in Donetsk and Luhansk has been seriously disrupted by the insurgency there.

The election was called after the last elected President, Viktor Yanukovych, was deposed in February amid mass protests against his pro-Russian policies.

Photographs taken by an Associated Press news agency crew show bodies lying in a field or inside a car outside the village of Blahodatne, which is near the town of Volnovakha.

Three charred armored infantry vehicles, their turrets blown away by powerful explosions, and several burned lorries could also be seen.

Residents told AP the attackers had used an armored bank lorry which the unsuspecting Ukrainian soldiers had waved through the checkpoint. The attackers then reportedly shot down the soldiers at point-blank range.

North Korea fires shells into disputed waters near South Korean warship

North Korea has fired shells into disputed waters near a South Korean warship.

This happened near Yeonpyeong island, on the disputed western maritime border, Yonhap news agency said.

On Tuesday, South Korea fired warning shots at three North Korean ships that crossed the maritime border. North Korea had said it would retaliate.

In 2010, North Korean shelling of Yeonpyeong killed four people.

The latest incident happened after 18:00 local time on Thursday, reports citing South Korean officials said.

“The shells fell near our ship which has been on regular patrol in our territory, but it did not cause any damage to our ship,” a spokesman from South Korea’s defense ministry told the AFP.

According to local news reports, South Korean forces fired several shells into northern waters in response.

Local television network YTN reported that residents on Yeonpyeong were being evacuated to bomb shelters.

North Korea and South Korea regularly conduct drills near the western sea border, which has long been a flashpoint between the two Koreas.

The UN drew the border after the Korean War, but North Korea has never recognized it.

Since the war ended in an armistice rather than a peace treaty, the two sides remain technically at war.

In March, the two countries traded artillery fire across the border.

North Korea killed two civilians and two marines in the 2010 shelling of Yeonpyeong island, which it said was in response to South Korean military exercises.

Earlier that year, a South Korean warship sank near Baengnyeong island, leaving 46 people dead. Seoul says Pyongyang torpedoed the vessel, but North Korea denies any role in the incident.

Tony Abbott wink: Australian PM admits making a mistake during chat with voter

Australia’s PM Tony Abbott has admitted he made a mistake after winking and smiling during a chat with a distressed voter.

The gaffe, which drew intense criticism, comes as Tony Abbott battles fury from some voters over his latest budget.

Many see proposals to cut health and education spending as Tony Abbott backtracking on election promises.

Hundreds have staged protests in Australian cities against the budget.

Tony Abbott had appeared on an Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) radio show on Wednesday to defend his proposals.

A woman who identified herself as “Gloria” called in, saying she was a chronically ill 67-year-old grandmother and that she would have to pay more for medical treatment under the new budget.

Tony Abbott winks and grins when the woman says: “I work on an adult s** line to make ends meet, now that’s the only way I can do it.”

He then appears to control himself by pursing his lips, glances at the video camera filming him in the studio, then puts on a serious expression.

Clips of the incident were later circulated online and on national media, prompting criticism that Tony Abbott has lack of empathy for voters.

He told Australia’s Channel Nine on Thursday morning that it was a mistake.

“I shouldn’t have done it… I should’ve been more focused on the caller and less focused on the interviewer,” Tony Abbott said.

He was attempting to engage with the caller and was “momentarily distracted” by the radio show whom he said was “smiling at me and I winked back at him”.

“Mistakes are always regrettable… and I will do my best having made a mistake yesterday to make none today,” Tony Abbott said.

On Wednesday he told another radio station that he was reacting to “an interesting call from someone who had an interesting story”.

Meanwhile “Gloria” contacted the radio show again on Thursday and said Tony Abbott’s actions were “sleazy, slimy”.

It is not the first time Tony Abbott has been accused of insensitivity towards women.

Tony Abbott was accused of being a misogynist by former PM Julia Gillard in 2012 – a label he has strongly rejected.

Thailand coup d’etat 2014: Army takes control of government

Thailand’s military has taken control of the government to restore order and enact political reforms in the South-East Asian nation, the army chief has announced in a televised statement.

The coup came after two days of inconclusive talks between the main political factions.

Thailand has been in political turmoil for months. On Tuesday the army imposed martial law.

A curfew has now been declared, effective across the country from 22:00 to 05:00 local time.

Political party leaders were taken away from the talks venue after troops sealed off the area.

The army is to send troops and vehicles to escort protesters away from rally sites, a senior army official told the Reuters news agency.

The latest unrest began in the Thai capital late last year, when then-PM Yingluck Shinawatra dissolved the lower house of parliament.

Demonstrators have blockaded several areas of Bangkok for months.

Earlier this month, a court ordered Yingluck Shinawatra’s removal for alleged abuse of power.

Thailand has faced a power struggle since Yingluck Shinawatra’s brother, Thaksin Shinawatra, was ousted by the military as prime minister in 2006.

Thaksin and Yingluck Shinawatra have strong support in rural areas and among poorer voters.

They are hated by an urban and middle-class elite who accuse them of corruption and abuse of power.

At least 31 people have been killed in Xinjiang region’s capital, Urumqi, after attackers crashed two cars into shoppers at a market, Chinese media reports say.

They also threw explosives during the attack in the regional capital Urumqi. More than 90 people were injured, the state-run Xinhua news agency said.

The Ministry of Public Security called it a “violent terrorist incident”.

Xinjiang, which is home to the Muslim Uighur minority, has seen a spate of attacks in the past year.

Information about incidents in the region, where ethnic tensions between Uighurs and Han Chinese continue, is tightly controlled.

Pictures on Weibo microblogs – China’s equivalent of Twitter – appeared to show Thursday’s attack taking place at one end of a busy market street lined with vegetable stalls.

One of the two vehicles exploded.

A local shopkeeper told the Associated Press he heard “four or five explosions” and saw “three or four people lying on the ground”.

“Witnesses said two cross-country vehicles driving from north to south ploughed into people in the market at 07:50. Explosives were thrown out of the vehicles,” the Xinhua report said.

The injured were taken to several hospitals, Xinhua said.

The World Uyghur Congress said the authorities in the Chinese capital Beijing should not increase the crackdown in Xinjiang.

Russia asks for talks on Prince Charles’ comments on Vladimir Putin

Russian and British diplomats are to meet and discuss comments reportedly made by Prince Charles about President Vladimir Putin.

Prince Charles is said to have likened some Nazi actions in Europe to Vladimir Putin’s policies, during a conversation with a former Polish war refugee.

It is believed the Russian embassy has asked for clarification of the remarks.

A Foreign Office spokesman said an official would meet Russia’s deputy ambassador for talks on Thursday.

Prince Charles reportedly made the comments during a conversation with Marienne Ferguson at an immigration museum in Nova Scotia, Canada, where she works.

They had been discussing Hitler’s takeover of countries when Ms Ferguson said the prince remarked “something to the effect of ‘it’s not unlike… what Putin is doing,'”.

Prince Charles and President Vladimir Putin are both due to attend a D-Day anniversary event in France next month.

Clarence House would not comment on what it said was a private conversation.

“But we would like to stress that the Prince of Wales would not seek to make a public political statement during a private conversation,” it said.

On Monday, Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall visited Pier 21, Canada’s national immigration museum in Halifax, during their four-day tour of the country.

McDonald’s headquarters shut down due to workers protest

Thousands of McDonald’s employees marched on the company’s Oak Brook campus that houses its Hamburger University training facility, demanding higher wages for workers.

The site of the planned protest was changed after McDonald’s vacated its headquarters in Illinois after consulting with police.

Protesters want the fast food giant pay a minimum wage of $15 per hour, double the US federal minimum wage.

The company’s annual shareholder meeting is scheduled for Thursday.

The closure affected one of five McDonald’s corporate buildings and about 3,000 employees.

Protesters – which included a few hundred McDonald’s workers – said they were seeking to highlight how low wages have exacerbated income inequality in the US.

The protest was planned before the annual shareholder meeting, where a vote is expected on executive pay.

Last year, chief executive Don Thompson was paid $9.5 million.

Shareholders in Mexican fast-food chain Chipotle recently rejected an executive pay plan for the firm’s co-chief executives, Steve Ells and Monty Moran, who earned $25.1 million and $24.4 million, respectively, last year.

Fast-food workers and labor organizers have been protesting since 2012 in an effort to boost wages and win worker rights, such as paid sick leave.

Last week, they organized a global walk out in more than 250 cities to highlight what they say are the difficulties facing low-paid restaurant employees.

President Barack Obama has pushed Congress to raise the federal minimum wage to $10.10 per hour from $7.25, however he has faced stiff opposition from Republicans.

Nigeria: Teachers holding day of protests in support of kidnapped schoolgirls

Nigerian teachers are holding a day of protests in support of more than 200 schoolgirls seized by the Islamist group Boko Haram last month.

Teaching unions said they would also march in memory of the 173 teachers killed by militants.

It follows two days of bloody attacks in the country, in which nearly 150 people have been killed.

Nigeria’s government is under pressure to do more to tackle Boko Haram and bring about the girls’ release.

President Barack Obama on Wednesday said the US had deployed 80 military personnel to neighboring Chad to help in the search.

The girls were taken from their school in Chibok, in north-eastern Borno state, on April 14. They are thought to be held in a remote forested area of the state, close to the border with Chad and Cameroon.

The Nigerian Union of Teachers said all schools across the country would be closed so teachers can participate in a series of “Bring Back Our Girls” rallies.

President of the union Michael Olukoya said they would not stop campaigning “until our girls are brought back safe and alive and the perpetrators of the heinous crime are brought to book”, Nigeria’s Premium Times quotes him as saying.

Another union leader, Segun Raheem, said that teachers too were also a target – and the authorities were not doing enough to protect them.

Nigeria is reeling from several days of violence.

Boko Haram is accused of killing 27 people in attacks on two villages, Shawa and Alagarno, not far from where the schoolgirls were taken.

Witnesses said they torched homes and shot at residents before leaving with stolen food and vehicles.

A double bombing in the central city of Jos on Tuesday, in which 118 people died, is also thought to have been the work of Boko Haram.

Missing California woman found after ten years

A 25-year-old California woman who went missing 10 years ago has told police she was forced to marry her captor and have his child.

The unnamed woman contacted police shortly after communicating with her sister on Facebook, officers said.

Isidro Garcia, 41, was arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of kidnapping, rape and false imprisonment.

Police said in a statement Isidro Garcia had been living with the girl’s family at the time of her disappearance.

The abuse began in 2004, the statement said, when Isidro Garcia was dating the victim’s mother and residing with her and her daughters in Santa Ana, a city in Orange County.

The police allege that Isidro Garcia began assaulting the victim in June of that year, only four months after the girl arrived in the US from Mexico.

In August, Isidro Garcia assaulted the victim’s mother and drugged the teenager, driving her 26 miles north to Compton, Los Angeles, where she was locked in a garage, say police.

“Over the course of the following months and years, Mr. Garcia repeatedly told the victim her family had given up looking for her, and if she tried to go back to them, the family would be deported,” police said.

The two moved on several occasions to avoid police detection, and used different identities, the police statement said.

Isidro Garcia frequently physically and s**ually assaulted the victim, it is alleged, and the two of them worked together at a night cleaning service.

“Even with the opportunity to escape, after years of physical and mental abuse, the victim saw no way out of her situation and lived a life with Garcia under sustained physical and mental abuse,” police said.

At a press conference, Corporal Anthony Bertagna of the Santa Ana Police Department told reporters Isidro Garcia had “brainwashed” her.

He said that in 2007, he forced the woman into a marriage, using documents he obtained in Mexico, and in 2012 the two had a child.

Recently, she contacted her sister on Facebook and was told that her mother had indeed been trying to find her, using a Spanish language newspaper and television station.

The communication with her sister made her realize she needed to leave, said Anthony Bertagna, and on Monday she went to police to report that she was a victim of domestic abuse, and she told them she had been abducted.

The following day, police formally arrested Isidro Garcia on suspicion of kidnapping for rape, lewd acts with a minor and false imprisonment. He has not been charged.

Neighbors in the street in Bell Gardens, Los Angeles, where the couple lived in recent years said on Wednesday evening they were stunned by the news, describing them as a happy couple who doted on their young daughter and even hosted parties.

The arrest comes a year after Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight, who went missing separately about a decade earlier, were rescued from a house in Cleveland, Ohio.

Russell Bucklew execution put on hold over medical condition

0

The US Supreme Court has delayed the execution of Missouri convicted murderer Russell Bucklew amid concerns a medical condition could complicate the lethal injection and cause undue suffering.

Russell Bucklew, 46, was scheduled to die at 00:01 local time on Wednesday.

His lawyers say a congenital deformity in his throat would put him at risk of choking during a lethal injection.

The execution would be the first since a botched lethal injection last month.

Oklahoma prisoner Clayton Lockett died of a heart attack in April after the executioners reported trouble finding a vein in which to inject the lethal drugs and officials halted the execution. He reportedly writhed and moaned as the first drug of three lethal drugs, a sedative, apparently failed to take effect as intended.

Russell Bucklew’s reprieve, however temporary, came after a day of legal wrangling that first saw a three-judge panel of the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals, a regional federal court, grant him a stay of execution, only to have that stay overturned hours later by the full court.

Then, with just two hours to go until the scheduled execution, Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito, who handles emergency appeals for the 8th Circuit region, issued his own stay.

Russell Bucklew could be put to death later on Wednesday if the Supreme Court considers his case and opts not to intervene.

He suffers from a condition called cavernous hemangioma, which causes malformation of the blood vessels and tumors in the throat and nose.

In an affidavit for his defense team, an anaesthesiologist and surgeon wrote last week that during an execution Russell Bucklew would be “at great risk of choking and suffocating because of his partially obstructed airway”.

In 1996, Russell Bucklew murdered a man he believed was romantically involved with his ex-girlfriend, then raped the woman during his escape from the scene of the murder. He was convicted of first-degree murder, kidnapping, burglary, forcible rape, and armed criminal action.

The US has had increasing trouble in recent years finding drugs to use in executions, amid an embargo from the EU, where pharmaceutical manufacturers have refused to ship drugs to buyers in the US for use in lethal injection.

The shortage has led the states in some cases to turn to lesser-regulated compounding pharmacies.

Missouri executes inmates with a single, lethal dose of the drug pentobarbital.

Like other states, Missouri keeps the source of the drug secret, in an effort to shield the provider from scrutiny and unfavorable publicity. News organizations and inmates have sued the states in an effort to force them to disclose the companies names. Their efforts have been rejected by the courts.

I Wanna Marry Harry: Dating show featuring Prince Harry impersonator criticized as shameless

Fox TV’s I Wanna Marry Harry dating show featuring a Prince Harry impersonator from Hertfordshire has been criticized as “shameless” and “predictable”.

Matthew Hicks, 24, won a role in I Wanna Marry Harry that sees him attempt to convince women he is the 29-year-old royal.

The show has faced criticism after being aired in America on Tuesday.

Matthew Hicks, an environmental consultant, said he never thought the premise was mean or deceiving to the girls.

The Southampton University graduate tries to persuade 12 girls they are competing to date the fourth in line to the British throne in the show.

“They put themselves in this situation,” Matthew Hicks said.

“They’re not weak, mentally fragile girls who especially might break down, and at the end of the day we’re all there for a laugh.”

Matthew Hicks said he thought the real Prince Harry would “think it was quite funny”.

Kensington Palace declined to comment on the show.

Matthew Hicks, who was spotted by producers on a celebrity lookalike website, was given training in royal history.

The geology and oceanography graduate, whose parents live in Henlow, Bedfordshire, played cricket for Hertfordshire.

As well as a history briefing, Matthew Hicks had his blond hair dyed ginger and was housed in an English manor house with guards to film the show.

Over five weeks and a series of dates, Matthew Hicks had to persuade the women who included a pre-school teacher and student studying for a PhD in physical therapy, he really was Prince Harry.

San Isidro festival suspended as three matadors are seriously gored by bulls

For the first time in 35 years the bull run at Madrid’s San Isidro festival has been suspended after three matadors have been seriously gored by the bulls.

David Mora suffered the worst injuries, as one of the animals rammed its horn into his leg and tossed him into the air at the Las Ventas bullring.

He was said to be in a serious but no longer life-threatening condition.

The organizers of the prestigious San Isidro festival said it was the first time in 35 years that the event had had to be suspended.

About 2,000 bullfights are still held every year in Spain, but the numbers are falling. In 2010, Catalonia became the second Spanish region after the Canary Islands to ban the tradition.

Opponents describe the blood-soaked pageants as barbaric, while fans – including PM Mariano Rajoy – say the tradition is an ancient art form deeply rooted in national history.

David Mora, who opened the program, fell to the ground after being knocked over by a 1,172lb bull.

A shocked crowd watched in horror as he was gored and thrown through the air. David Mora sustained a large gash in his thigh and another in his armpit, bullring officials said.

Spanish newspaper El Pais described the somersault as “horrific, shocking, chilling”.

The second matador, Antonio Nazare, injured his knee when a bull dragged him along the sand in the bullring. And the final headlining act, Jimenez Fortes, was skewered in the right leg and the pelvis.

Both men were treated for their injuries and due to be released from hospital on Wednesday.

Bullfighting dates back at least 4,000 years and is thought to have been popularized by the Romans.

The corrida, as it is known, is still permitted in a majority of Spanish regions despite growing criticism.

Last year, Spain’s congress granted the tradition cultural heritage status in order to protect it from further bans.

The move was condemned by international animal welfare groups.
