Bruce Jenner decided to become a woman more than a year ago

According to new reports, Bruce Jenner’s decision to become a woman was made more than a year ago.

People magazine has quoted a family source saying that the former Olympian is in the process of becoming a woman.

Last year, TMZ was reporting that Bruce Jenner underwent an operation called a laryngeal shave, to smooth out his Adam’s Apple, and, according to the celebrity website, it was “one of the first steps”.

At that time Bruce Jenner said he was “absolutely not” transitioning.
However, the website claims his denial was part of a plan to make the change gradually, which he has done over the last year, to the point it simply became obvious and an announcement became almost irrelevant.Bruce Jenner becoming a woman 2015

Sources told TMZ that Bruce Jenner is now far along in the process, has undergone various procedures and psychological counseling, and is ready to show his journey to the world.
His docuseries will air as early as May.

According to People magazine, his family is supportive but not all family members are on board 100%.

A leader in the transgender community told TMZ they’ve know for “way more than a year” Bruce Jenner was doing this and some felt he should have announced it when he had the laryngeal shave. However, Bruce Jenner decided a gradual transition followed by a revelation would be better for him and his family, the celebrity website reported.

It has also reported that part of the plan to reveal the decision is for various family members to start speaking out.

Kenji Goto: ISIS releases video of Japanese hostage killing

Japanese hostage Kenji Goto has been killed by Islamic State militants, according to a video released online.

The video comes less than a week after news of the beheading of another Japanese man, Haruna Yukawa.

Kenji Goto Jogo, 47, is a well-known freelance journalist and film-maker who went to Syria in October, reportedly to try to secure Haruna Yukawa’s release.

Japan said it was trying to authenticate the video.

The video, which bears the same symbols as previous ISIS videos, shows a militant with a British accent killing Kenji Goto.

Japanese government spokesman Yoshihide Suga said Japan was “outraged” by the video, adding that the cabinet was meeting to decide a response to it.

US National Security Council spokeswoman Bernadette Meehan said: “We have seen the video purporting to show that Japanese citizen Kenji Goto has been murdered by the terrorist group ISIL [ISIS].

“We are working to confirm its authenticity. The United States strongly condemns ISIL’s actions and we call for the immediate release of all remaining hostages. We stand in solidarity with our ally Japan.”Kenji Goto Jogo killed by ISIS

Japanese officials had been working with Jordan to secure the release of Kenji Goto and a Jordanian pilot, Moaz al-Kasasbeh, who was shot down over Syria in December.

However, earlier on Saturday they said negotiations had become deadlocked.

An ISIS video released on January 27 said Kenji Goto had “only 24 hours left to live” and Moaz al-Kasasbeh “even less”.

They later gave a deadline of sunset on January 29 for a deal by which Kenji Goto would be freed in return for Jordan releasing captured Iraqi militant Sajida al-Rishawi.

But the deal may have been complicated by Jordan’s demand that Moaz al-Kasasbeh also be released.

It has also emerged that the militants had exchanged emails with Kenji Goto’s mother, who has pleaded publicly for her son’s release.

ISIS had initially demanded a $200 million ransom for the two Japanese hostages.

Podemos March for Change: Tens of thousands of people attend Madrid rally

Tens of thousands of Spaniards have marched in central Madrid for a rally organized by radical left-wing party Podemos.

The “March for Change” is one of Podemos’ first outdoor mass rallies, as it looks to build on the recent victory of its close allies Syriza in Greece.

Podemos leader Pablo Iglesias told the crowd a “wind of change” was starting to blow through Europe.

The party has surged ahead in opinion polls, and has vowed to write off part of Spain’s debt if it comes to power.

Several of Madrid’s main avenues became a sea of people and purple, the party’s color, after its supporters travelled from all over Spain.

Marching from Madrid city hall to the central Puerta del Sol square, protesters shouted “Si, Podemos!”, meaning “Yes, we can”.

Broadcaster TVE reported that hundreds of thousands were at the demonstration, but there was no official tally.

“The wind of change is starting to blow in Europe,” Pablo Iglesias said, addressing supporters in Greek and Spanish at the start of the rally.Podemos March for Change Madrid

“We dream but we take our dream seriously. More has been done in Greece in six days than many governments did in years.”

Protesters are parading in the same streets that over the past six years have seen many other gatherings against financial crisis cutbacks imposed by successive governments.

Speaking in Barcelona, Spanish PM Mariano Rajoy said Podemos had no chance of winning elections.

“I don’t accept the gloomy Spain which some want to portray because they think that by doing so they will replace those who are governing and have had to face the most difficult crisis in decades. They will not succeed,” he said.

Many Spaniards are enraged over reports of political corruption and public spending cuts implemented by Mariano Rajoy’s People’s Party and before that by the Socialists.

The two big traditional parties have described the party – less than a year old and whose names translates as “we can” – as populist.

Since Podemos stormed onto the political scene in last May’s European elections, it has moved from strength to strength with its uncompromising message against austerity and corruption.

Both left-wing and right-wing media have criticized Podemos, accusing it of having ties with Venezuela’s left-wing leaders and alleging financial misconduct by some of its senior members.

The party’s leaders have in response promised to publish their tax returns, with Pablo Iglesias remaining defiant.

“In the face of their hatred, we smile,” is one of his regular pronouncements, according to the AFP news agency. After the Syriza triumph in the Greek elections he said that “hope had been born”.

Spain has now officially come out of recession but nearly one in four workers remains unemployed.

Two Eagles balloon lands in Mexico after completing record Pacific crossing

Two Eagles helium balloon has completed the Pacific Ocean crossing with a sea-landing off Mexico, setting new milestones on a six-day trip.

Pilots Troy Bradley and Leonid Tiukhtyaev landed safely, their Two Eagles Balloon team said.

They claim to have beaten the world distance and duration records by flying for more than 137 hours and travelling more than 5,209 miles (8,383km).

To set the records the team needed to beat the existing records by 1%.

“The Two Eagles balloon team is pleased to report the Two Eagles balloon has landed safely just off the Baja coast near La Poza Grande,” their team said in a statement.

“The pilots made a controlled descent to a gentle water landing about four miles off the Baja coast. The balloon is stable and still inflated and the pilots are fine.”Two Eagles balloon landing

The statement added that Mexico’s authorities “are co-operating fully and the Coast Guard is en route to the balloon. We anticipate they will tow the capsule to shore”.

Troy Bradley and Leonid Tiukhtyaev left Japan on Sunday, January 25, and had aimed to land in Canada or the US. However, weather forced them to change course towards Mexico.

The statement stressed that the sea landing was acceptable “under the international rules governing the establishment of world records”.

“Two around-the-world attempts using a different type of balloon landed in the water and were approved as records.”

The two pilots needed to beat the existing records – both set in 1981 – by 1%.

For duration that meant staying aloft for about 138 hours and 45 minutes, and for distance they needed to travel about 5,260 miles.

The Two Eagles Balloon team said the landing “occurred at six days, 16 hours and 37 minutes”, with the pilots covering the distance of 6,646 miles.

Gas-air balloons are difficult to steer, relying on the differing wind speed and direction at different altitudes.

In order to change height the pilots have only a helium release valve to go down and sandbags to jettison to go up.

The hi-tech “Two Eagles” balloon is made of a strong Kevlar and carbon-fiber composite, but weighs only 220 lbs.

The balloon is fitted with monitors and other instruments that track their course and compile data to be submitted to record-keepers.

The specially-designed capsule sits beneath a huge helium-filled envelope and is designed to stay aloft for up to 10 days. The pilots live in a closet-like space with a very low ceiling.

Germany: Former President Richard von Weizsaecker dies aged 94

German ex-President Richard von Weizsaecker has died at the age of 94, the president’s office has announced.

Richard von Weizsaecker’s 10 years in office, from 1984 to 1994, spanned the period of German reunification.

A soldier in the German army in World War Two, Richard von Weizsaecker won widespread praise for his efforts to persuade Germans to confront their Nazi past.

A member of the Christian Democratic Union, he also served as the governing mayor of West Berlin in the 1980s.

Announcing Richard von Weizsaecker’s death, current President Joachim Gauck said: “Richard von Weizsaecker stood worldwide for a Germany that had found its way to centre of the democratic family of peoples.Richard von Weizsaecker dead at 94

“He stood for a federal republic that faces up to its past.”

Richard von Weizsaecker was first elected president in 1984 and his speech a year later on the 40th anniversary of the defeat of Nazi Germany won him widespread respect.

He told the West German parliament: “All of us, whether guilty or not, whether young or old, must accept the past. We are all affected by its consequences and liable for it. Anyone who closes his eyes to the past is blind to the present.

“The 8th of May was a day of liberation. It freed us all from the system of National Socialist tyranny.”

The same year he became the first West German head of state to visit Israel.

Richard von Weizsaecker was elected unopposed to a second term in 1989, overseeing in the largely ceremonial role the initial years of a reunited Germany.

American journalist Jim Wyss, who was detained in Venezuela while covering the 2013 elections, has become the unlikely star of a Venezuelan tourism advertisement.

The image on TeleSur’s Twitter feed showed a man being hugged with the line: “We love Venezuela for receiving foreigners like one of our own.”

He was detained for two days during the 2013 elections for not having a journalist’s visa.

Australian Open 2015: Serena Williams beats Maria Sharapova to win her 19th Grand Slam

0

World number one Serena Williams beat Maria Sharapova to win her sixth Australian Open and 19th Grand Slam title.

Serena Williams, 33, served to win a pulsating final 6-3 7-6 (7-5) after Maria Sharapova fought back in the second set.

The American moves past Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert with a 19th major singles title.

Serena Williams has now beaten Maria Sharapova, the world number two, 16 times in a row dating back to 2004.

“I have to congratulate Maria, she played a wonderful match and she really pushed me,” said Serena Williams.

“She played so well and gave me a great final not only for the fans, but for women’s tennis. I’m really honored to play her in the final.”

Despite feeling so unwell during a rain delay in the first set that she left the court to vomit, Serena Williams hit 18 aces and 38 winners as she won in one hour and 51 minutes.Serena Williams Australian Open 2015

Seemingly unsure for a moment that an ace had sealed victory, she then shook hands with Maria Sharapova and bounded over to the corner of Rod Laver Arena towards her player box.

It was a brilliant performance in a final that exceeded many expectations, bearing in mind the players’ head-to-head record.

Maria Sharapova made a nervous start, double-faulting to drop serve in game one, while Serena Williams appeared keener than ever to shorten the points, possibly because of her ailment.

The American crushed the Russian’s second serve and was not disrupted by a 12-minute rain break that led to the roof being closed.

Still feeling the effects of a heavy cold that has dogged her over the last week, Serena Williams headed off court – in contrast to Maria Sharapova – but the top seed returned at the potentially dangerous score of 3-2, 30-30, to calmly produce an ace and a forehand winner.

Breaks of serve were swapped before Serena Williams took the set in 47 minutes with a backhand and a scream.

Maria Sharapova was looking at another one-sided defeat when facing break points early in the second, but showed why she is a five-time Grand Slam champion.

She served her way out of trouble and managed to cling on in a set in which Serena Williams hit 15 aces and won almost 90% of first-serve points.

Greece crisis: Angela Merkel rules out any debt cancellation

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has ruled out canceling any of Greece’s debt, saying banks and creditors have already made substantial cuts.

However, Angela Merkel told the Hamburger Abendblatt newspaper she still wanted Greece to stay in the eurozone.

Greece’s left-wing Syriza party won last weekend’s election with a pledge to have half the debt written off.

Its finance minister said the “troika” of global institutions overseeing Greek debt was a “rotten committee”.

The troika – the European Commission, European Central Bank (ECB) and International Monetary Fund (IMF) – had agreed a €240 billion ($270 billion) bailout with the previous Greek government.Angela Merkel on Greece debts

Greece’s new Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis has refused to work with the troika to renegotiate the bailout terms and has already begun to roll back the austerity measures the creditors had demanded of the previous government.

Angela Merkel told the Hamburger Abendblatt: “I do not envisage fresh debt cancellation.”

She said: “There has already been voluntary debt forgiveness by private creditors, banks have already slashed billions from Greece’s debt.”

Greece still has a debt of €315 billion ($355 billion) – about 175% of gross domestic product – despite some creditors writing down debts in a renegotiation in 2012.

Angela Merkel insisted she did not want Greece to leave the eurozone.

She said: “The aim of our policy was and is that Greece remains permanently part of the euro community. Europe will continue to show its solidarity with Greece, as with other countries hard hit by the crisis, if these countries carry out reforms and cost-saving measures.”

On January 30, German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble warned Greece about its negotiation tactics on writing off debt.

“There’s no arguing with us about this, and what’s more we are difficult to blackmail,” he said.

Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis refused to work with the troika, saying he would instead talk to individual organizations and EU member states.

Yanis Varoufakis has brought forward to Saturday his planned trip to Paris, where he will meet French counterpart Michel Sapin.

Greece’s current program of loans ends on February 28. A final bailout tranche of €7.2 billion still has to be negotiated.

New Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras will visit Cyprus, Italy and France next week but has no plans to visit Germany as yet.

Heather Cho trial: Korean Air CEO Cho Yang-ho scolded daughter over nut rage

0

Korean Air chairman and CEO Cho Yang-ho has told a court he scolded his 40-year-old daughter, known as Heather Cho, for ejecting an air steward in a now infamous “nut rage” incident.

Both father and daughter apologized to the court for the incident, which erupted when Cho Hyun-ah was served nuts in a packet rather than on a plate.

Cho Hyun-ah, aka Heather Cho, appeared in green prison overalls, her hair falling over her face and speaking in a whisper.

She could face 10 years in jail.

Cho Hyun-ah has denied forcing the flight attendant and the cabin crew chief to kneel and beg forgiveness while she shouted abuse.Heather Cho Korean Air nut rage

In court, the attendant who mis-served the nuts said she was pushed by Cho Hyun-ah, a push now alleged to amount to a criminal assault.

Heather Cho is also accused of interfering with the execution of duty and coercing employees to give false testimony.

The case has sparked a storm in South Korea, highlighting nepotism within the country’s mighty conglomerates, or “chaebol”, and the perceived arrogance of the offspring of chaebol chiefs.

Cho Hyun-ah and her siblings have all served as executives with Korean Air.

“It was wrong to get a crew member off the flight no matter what the reason,” Cho Yang-ho told the court, during his first appearance in the witness box, according to Reuters news agency.

“I have scolded her for not controlling her emotions and [for] expelling the crew member,” he said as his daughter appeared to wipe away tears.

Cho Yang-ho apologized to the crew chief whom Cho Hyun-ah forced to leave the flight, and promised he would face no reprisals if he chose to stay in his job.

Cho Hyun-ah ordered the plane to return to the gate while it was taxiing to the runway in New York on December 5 to eject the crew chief, causing an 11-minute delay to its arrival in South Korea.

The female flight attendant who served the nuts also gave testimony on January 30, saying she was pushed and had a service manual thrown at her by Heather Cho during the incident.

She said she was subsequently pressured to accept an apology from Cho Hyun-ah in exchange for a job as a professor, but did not accept.

Venezuela issues new protest regulation allowing troops to open fire

Venezuela has issued new protest rules allowing troops to open fire if they feel their lives are at risk during demonstrations.

The new regulation specifies a scaled approach to maintaining public order, up to and including the use of deadly force.

Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino Lopez said the changes were made in response to three months of violent protests last year.

Citizen rights groups in Venezuela say the new rules are “dangerously vague”.

Vladimir Padrino Lopez said the aim was to establish a protocol to help train and improve troops’ responses to public protests.

However, the minister said the rules had been written as “a profound response to human rights, to life and to protesters”.

The Venezuelan ombudsman, Tarek Williams Saab, said the regulations were “very clear on the progressive and differentiated use of force” and the aim was “to protect human rights and rights in demonstrations”.

He was responding to a series of criticisms from civic groups.

Marcela Maspero of the National Workers Union called the plans “a direct threat to the working class.

“It is the workers who have been the main participants in the social protests in the country in the last few years.”

She said the country was going through hard economic times, and there had been protests about the serious problems in the food supply chain and increases in the price of petrol.

Marcela Maspero felt the government was publishing these rules as “a warning” to the workers.

Civil rights groups pointed out that the ruling was unconstitutional because the Constitution expressly forbids the use of firearms to control peaceful demonstrations.

Rocio San Miguel, who works for the NGO Control Ciudadano (Citizen Control) was quoted by the French news agency AFP as saying it was right to regulate how soldiers behaved but the new regulations were “dangerously vague and controversial”.

The rules were published a few days before the anniversary of the start of three months of anti-government protests last year in several cities in which at least 40 people died, including police and protestors.

Phoenix Open 2015: Tiger Woods shoots worst round of his career

0

Tiger Woods carded the worst round of his career with an 11-over-par 82 in the second round of this year’s Waste Management Phoenix Open in Arizona.

While Martin Laird led on 10 under, former world No 1 and 14-time major champion Tiger Woods was last in a field of 132 and missed the cut.

Tiger Woods, 39, was playing in his first PGA Tour event of the season.

“I’ve got to keep this in perspective. Sometimes that’s hard to do,” said Tiger Woods, who finished on 13 over.Tiger Woods Phoenix Open 2015 second round

Struggling with his chipping, Tiger Woods carded six bogeys, two double bogeys, a triple bogey and two birdies in his second round at TPC Scottsdale.

His previous worst round was an 81 in the 2002 Open at Muirfield, a round completed in a storm that made scoring difficult.

Tiger Woods, who carded a two-over-par 73 in his opening round, missed much of last season, including the Ryder Cup, after having back surgery in March 2014.

“We all have days like this,” he said.

“Unfortunately mine was in a public forum and a public setting, but we all have days like this and we take the good with the bad.”

Martin Laird, 32, who shot a second straight 66 in wet and windy conditions.

Daniel Berger is two shots behind Martin Laird on eight under, while another tour rookie, Justin Thomas, is third on seven under.

Phil Mickelson, a three-time winner in Phoenix, missed the cut after carding a second-round five-over 76.

US rejects Cuba’s Guantanamo Bay demand as part of thaw

0

According to the White House, the US will not hand back the Guantanamo Bay naval base as part of efforts to improve relations with Cuba.

Cuba’s President Raul Castro included the demand in a speech on January 28, calling also for the US trade embargo to be lifted.

President Barack Obama “does believe that the prison at Guantanamo Bay should be closed down… but not the naval base”, the White House said.

The land on which the base stands was leased to the US by Cuba in 1903.

The Cuban government which came to power in the revolution of 1959 has long demanded its return, saying it is a violation of international law, but the US points to a legal provision making the lease permanent unless it is terminated by mutual agreement.

Last month the two countries announced a thaw in relations, agreeing to restore diplomatic ties severed in 1961. Delegations have begun negotiating the re-establishment of embassies.

In his speech on January 28, Raul Castro said: “The re-establishment of diplomatic relations is the start of a process of normalizing bilateral relations.

“But this will not be possible while the blockade still exists, while they don’t give back the territory illegally occupied by the Guantanamo naval base.”

This condition was rejected by White House spokesman Josh Earnest in remarks to the media on January 29.

Josh Earnest agreed that President Barack Obama was seeking to shut the prison at Guantanamo Bay, as it “only serves as a recruiting tool for al-Qaeda and other extremist organizations”.

“But the naval base is not something that we believe should be closed,” the White House spokesman said.

Shakira and Gerard Pique welcome second baby boy named Sasha

Shakira and Gerard Pique have welcomed their second baby boy at 9.54PM on January 29 in Barcelona, Spain.

The baby boy, born by caesarean section, is called Sasha, Gerard Pique’s proud grandfather has confirmed. Amador Bernabéu told reporters that he had seen a photo of the baby, who supposedly looks like Gerard.

“He’s called Sasha which is Alexander in Russian,” said Amador Bernabéu.

“They’ve told me he looks like Gerard. Milan [the couple’s first son] looked like Shakira when he was born but this one looks more like his father.”

Amador Bernabéu hasn’t had a chance to see his new great-grandson because of a pressing engagement on Thursday. At midday he had an appointment to make Sasha a member of Barcelona FC, where Gerard Pique plays, just as he did for Milan.Shakira second baby

Shakira revealed on her website that “the name Sasha is of Greek and Russian descent and means <<defender of mankind>> and <<warrior>>.”

The brief statement also revealed that “both mother and child are in excellent health”.

Sasha was born two years after Milan made his debut in the very same hospital.

Milan turned 2 on January 22 and his parents both have their birthday on February 2, when Shakira will be 38, while her partner will be 28.

Expectation had been high in Catalonia with reporters camped outside the city’s Teknon Clinic as early as January 27. However, the couple kept up their normal routine, with Gerard Pique training as usual and even travelling to Madrid for a match on January 28.

On Thursday evening, Shakira and Gerard Pique slipped quietly into hospital by a side door, followed shortly afterwards by the singer’s brother.

Shakira and Gerard Pique asked followers to donate money to UNICEF, an idea they had when expecting Milan. Their first Virtual Baby Shower in 2013 was a huge success: over 80,000 children were vaccinated against polio, nearly 4 tons of therapeutic food helped children suffering from malnutrition, plus around 1,000 anti-malaria bed nets and nearly 200,000 oral rehydration salts sachets were distributed.

UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Shakira was hoping fans would be just as generous this time around.

Jay-Z bids to take over Aspiro’s music streaming service for $56 million

Jay-Z’s company, Project Panther, has bid to take over Sweden-based company Aspiro AB – which owns music streaming services WiMP and Tidal – for a reported $56 million.

WiMP, which rivals Spotify in some countries, is funded by paid subscriptions and has a one month free trial available.

It is currently available in Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Germany and Poland.

The service is also available in the US the UK, where it is called Tidal (which streams music in HD).

The move will put Jay-Z in competition with Beats Music, founded by Dr. Dre and bought by Apple in 2014.

Tidal currently offers users access to 25 million tracks, in addition to 75,000 music videos and other content including artist interviews for £19.99 ($24) per month.

That contrasts with Spotify’s charge of $12 per month for 30 million tracks.

Jay-Z has sold more than 100 million records worldwide and is estimated to be worth $520 million, but as well as being one of the world’s biggest selling music artists, he has a range of business interests.

If successful, Jay-Z’s bid will add streaming to a portfolio including 40/40 Club sports bars, Armand de Brignac Champagne and clothing brand Rocawear.

His company Project Panther described Aspiro as “an innovative high-quality company with strong future growth potential”.

WiMP has 512,000 paying users in Europe, making it far smaller than its main rival Spotify – it boasts 15 million paying subscribers across more than 60 countries.

The deal looks set to go ahead as Aspiro published a press release welcoming the offer.

“Panther is deemed to possess the capacity to develop the company in a privately owned environment,” the statement said.

Greece: Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis rejects debt talks with troika

Greece’s new Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis says his government will not negotiate over the Greek bailout conditions with the “troika” team from the EU and IMF.

Yanis Varoufakis said he was rather seeking direct talks with eurozone leaders, to try to cancel more than half the money Greece owes.

The minister was speaking after meeting Jeroen Dijsselbloem, head of the Eurogroup – the eurozone finance ministers.

Jeroen Dijsselbloem said Greece should stick to its reform commitments.

He said Greece and the Eurogroup had a “mutual interest in the further recovery of the Greek economy inside the eurozone” and warned against Athens acting unilaterally in its efforts to renegotiate its bailout.

Greece has endured tough budget cuts in return for its €240 billion ($270 billion) bailout, agreed in 2010 with the “troika” – the European Commission, International Monetary Fund (IMF) and European Central Bank (ECB).

There was little warmth between the two men at the news conference, with Jeroen Dijsselbloem making a brusque exit.Jeroen Dijsselbloem and Yanis Varoufakis

Breaking with tradition, Yanis Varoufakis wore an open-neck shirt – hanging loose at his belt. Jeroen Dijsselbloem was dressed conventionally.

On the troika, Yanis Varoufakis said: “We have no intention of co-operating with a three-member committee whose goal is to implement a program whose logic we consider anti-European.”

Jeroen Dijsselbloem, who is also Dutch Finance Minister, said the two sides would decide what would happen next before the bailout program ends – that is, by February 28.

He also met Greek PM Alexis Tsipras in Athens, who led the Syriza radical left-wing coalition to victory in elections on Sunday.

Yanis Varoufakis, meanwhile, said Greece was not asking for an extension of the existing bailout, but seeking a “new agreement that will emerge following talks between all Europeans”.

He said he would he seek “maximum co-operation” with Greece’s international creditors, but that he would not work through the “troika”, which he called “a committee built on rotten foundations”.

Jeroen Dijsselbloem rejected Alexis Tsipras’s idea of convening a European conference on debt.

“This conference already exists and it’s called the Eurogroup,” he told the news conference.

Syriza won on an anti-austerity platform, promising to have half of Greece’s debt written off, and to roll back on deep cuts to jobs, pay and pensions.

Greece’s economy has shrunk drastically since the 2008 global financial crisis, and high unemployment has thrown many Greeks into poverty.

The new government has already pressed ahead with cancelling major privatization projects, including of the two main ports of Piraeus and Thessaloniki.

But EU officials have warned there is little appetite among eurozone countries for cutting the debt.

Greece has about €20 billion ($22.5 billion) to repay this year, according to the Greek finance ministry.

Economists estimate that Greece needs to raise about €4.3 billion in the first quarter.

Mitt Romney 2016: Former Republican candidate will not run for president again

Mitt Romney has decided he will not run for president again.

The 67-year-old Republican was beaten by President Barack Obama in the US 2012 election.

Mitt Romney said he had decided it was “best to give other leaders in the party the opportunity to become our next nominee”.

His statement comes weeks after a surprise announcement saying he was considering another bid.

The decision not to run frees up donors to support other Republican candidates.

Former Florida Governor Jeb Bush, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and Senator Rand Paul are among those who are considering a White House bid.

On the Democratic side, the presumed front-runner is former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, although she has not made any announcement about campaigning.Mitt Romney will not run for White House 2016

Hillary Clinton previously ran for president in 2008 but lost the Democratic nomination to Barack Obama.

Mitt Romney’s campaign raised more than $1 billion in the 2012 election, when he unsuccessfully challenged President Barack Obama.

He also lost the 2008 Republican nomination to Senator John McCain.

In a statement made during a phone call to donors, Mitt Romney said he was “convinced that we could win the nomination”, but added that “one of our next generation of Republican leaders… may well emerge as being better able to defeat the Democrat nominee”.

Mitt Romney said it was a tough decision for him and his wife, Ann, “but we believe it is for the best of the party and the nation”.

He reportedly discovered after floating a potential run three weeks ago that several of his key fundraisers had decided to support Jeb Bush, according to the Associated Press news agency.

Jeb Bush – the son of a former president and brother of another – announced in December he was “exploring” a run.

After Mitt Romney’s announcement Jeb Bush tweeted: “Mitt is a patriot and I join many in hoping his days of serving our nation and our party are not over.”

Suge Knight arrested for murder

Suge Knight has been arrested for murder in connection to a “fatal traffic incident” in West Hollywood, the Los Angeles County Sheriff has confirmed.

The Death Row Records founder is being held on bail of $2 million.

Marion “Suge” Knight had earlier surrendered to police after he was declared a suspect in a hit-and-run where one man died.

Another man was injured and although he is currently in hospital, his condition is not yet known.

Around 3PM on January 29, a man fitting Suge Knight’s description drove to a burger shop and began rowing with two people, said Lt John Corina of the LA County Sheriff’s Department.

The driver then backed into one of the victims, before running them both over.Suge Knight arrested 2015

The record 49-year-old producer is said to have left the scene in a red Ford pickup truck, the police said.

Suge Knight was involved in an earlier fight with the pair at a different location, John Corina added.

One of the victims died in hospital, according to the Sheriff’s Department statement – while the condition of the second victim, who was also taken to the hospital, has yet to be confirmed.

A lawyer for Suge Knight seemed to confirm the rap legend had been driving at the time, but claimed it was an accident and he was running away from attackers.

“He was in the process of being physically assaulted by two men and in an effort to escape he unfortunately hit two (other) individuals,” James Blatt said.

“He was in his car trying to escape.”

Suge Knight founded Death Row Records in the 1990s, but later declared bankruptcy and the company was auctioned off.

He helped launch the careers of artists including Dr Dre, Tupac Shakur and Snoop Dogg.

In August 2014, Suge Knight was shot six times at a nightclub in Los Angeles. No arrests have been made.

In November 2014, he pleaded not guilty to a robbery charge filed after a celebrity photographer accused him of stealing her camera in Beverly Hills.

The music boss has previously been convicted of armed robbery and assault with a gun.

He has also served time for violating probation.

Suge Knight could face up to 30 years in prison because of prior convictions.

Eurozone deflation deepens in January 2015

Deflation has deepened across the 19 countries that use the euro currency.

In January, prices in the eurozone were 0.6% down on their levels a year ago.

The figure shows the eurozone heading deeper into deflationary territory from December, when prices were 0.2% down on the year before.

A large contributor to falling prices is the cost of energy, with oil prices down almost 60% on the middle of last year.

Energy prices plunged 8.9% in January.

If food and energy are stripped out of the calculations, eurozone prices were still rising at an inflation rate of 0.5%, down from 0.7% the month before.Eurozone deflation January 2015

The eurozone has only once before experienced deflation at these levels, in July 2009, as the region first went into recession following the financial crisis.

Last week the European Central Bank (ECB) launched a program aimed at pushing prices back up – known as quantitative easing – through which it injected around 1 trillion euros into the economy.

Christian Schulz, senior economist at Berenberg Bank said the latest figures showed that “the ECB was … more than justified in taking aggressive action earlier this month.

“The multi-stimulus of cheap oil, a weak euro and aggressive monetary easing is now stabilizing expectations and will help the ECB reach its price stability target over time.”

There was better news on eurozone unemployment, which fell to 11.4% in December, down from 11.5% in November.

Within that figure there are huge differences between jobless levels in different countries.

Germany has a 4.8% unemployment rate. But 25.8% of Greece’s labor force is out of work and Spain’s jobless rate is 23.7%.

The euro was slightly higher after the news, rising 0.35% against the dollar to $1.1358, and sending the pound down 0.25% to €1.3276.

Princess Elena of Avalor: Disney introduces its first Latina princess

Disney has unveiled its first Latina princess, Princess Elena of Avalor.

Princess Elena of Avalor is the star of a new animated television series for Disney Junior.

She will make her debut in a 2016 episode of Sofia the First before getting her own spin-off series.

Disney described the 16-year-old as the “bold, caring, funny and clever ascendant to the throne in the fairytale kingdom of Avalor”.

The kingdom will be inspired by diverse Latin cultures and folklore.

Disney made history in 2009 with its first black princess, called Tiana, in The Princess and the Frog.

The series will feature “a universal story” with themes that “authentically reflect the hopes and dreams of our diverse audience”, according to Nancy Kanter, the executive vice president of Disney Junior Worldwide.Disney Princess Elena of Avalor

“What excites us most is the chance to use distinctive animation and visual design to tell wonderful stories influenced by culture and traditions that are familiar to the worldwide population of Hispanic and Latino families and reflect the interests and aspirations of all children as told through a classic fairy tale,” said Nancy Kanter.

While the show will centre around the “confident and compassionate teenager” Elena, it is being targeted at children aged two to seven.

Disney said the series, which will be presented in 25 languages around the world, will communicate “positive messages and life lessons” for young children about things like “leadership, resilience, diversity, compassion and the importance of family and family traditions”.

Princess Elena’s story starts when she is trapped inside an amulet while trying to protect her sister and grandparents from evil sorceress Shuriki, who took her parents and kingdom away.

It turns out to be the same amulet worn by Princess Sofia, who will set out to restore Elena to her human form and help her return to the kingdom of Avalor.
