Viktor Yanukovych’s son dies at Lake Baikal in Russia

Viktor Yanukovych Jr., the younger son of ousted Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has drowned in Lake Baikal in Russia, reports say.

Earlier Russian and Ukrainian media reports said Viktor Yanukovych Jr. died after his vehicle fell through ice on Lake Baikal in the south of the Russian region of Siberia.

Reports say Viktor Yanukovych’s son had been taking part in a sporting event when the VW van plunged into the water.

Five other people in the vehicle escaped, Ukrainian news website Levvy Bereg quoted sources from his inner circle as saying.Viktor Yanukovych dead at 33

Russian website RBK quoted local officials as saying the incident happened on March 21, after the group drove on to the ice to take photographs.

Viktor Yanukovych Jr., 33, was known for his passion for extreme driving.

His death is the latest of several involving people with ties to former President Viktor Yanukovych.

Oleksandr Peklushenko, a former regional governor, was found dead in Ukraine earlier this month in what authorities said appeared to be a suicide.

Five other officials also died in mysterious circumstances this year.

Lee Kuan Yew: Former Singapore prime minister dies aged 91

Former Singapore Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, who transformed the island country from a small port city into a wealthy global hub, has died at the age of 91.

Lee Kuan Yew served as the city-state’s prime minister for 31 years, and continued to work in government until 2011.

Highly respected as the architect of Singapore’s prosperity, Lee Kuan Yew was also criticized for his iron grip on power.

Under Lee Kuan Yew freedom of speech was tightly restricted and political opponents were targeted by the courts.

The announcement was made “with deep sorrow” by the press secretary of PM Lee Hsien Loong, Lee Kuan Yew’s son.Lee Kuan Yew dead at 91

“The prime minister is deeply grieved to announce the passing of Mr. Lee Kuan Yew, the founding prime minister of Singapore,” his office said in a statement.

It said Lee Kuan Yew died peacefully at the Singapore General Hospital at 03:18 local time on March 23.

Lee Kuan Yew had been in hospital for several weeks with severe pneumonia. Over the weekend, people left tributes and messages of goodwill at the hospital as his condition deteriorated.

A charismatic and unapologetic figure, Lee Kuan Yew co-founded the People’s Action Party, which has governed Singapore since 1959, and was its first prime minister.

The Cambridge-educated lawyer led Singapore through merger with, and then separation from, Malaysia – something that he described as a “moment of anguish”.

Speaking at a press conference after the split in 1965, Lee Kuan Yew pledged to build a meritocratic, multi-racial nation.

But tiny Singapore – with no natural resources – needed a new economic model.

“We knew that if we were just like our neighbors, we would die,” Lee Kuan Yew told the New York Times in 2007.

“Because we’ve got nothing to offer against what they have to offer. So we had to produce something which is different and better than what they have.”

Through investment in schooling, Lee Kuan Yew set about creating a highly-educated work force fluent in English.

He reached out to foreign investors to turn Singapore into a manufacturing hub, introducing incentives to attract foreign companies.

The city-state grew wealthy and later developed into a major financial centre. But building a nation came with tight controls – and one of Lee Kuan Yew’s legacies was a clampdown on the press.

These restrictions remain today. In 2014, Singapore stood at 150 in the Reports Without Borders World Press Freedom Index, below countries like Russia, Myanmar and Zimbabwe.

Dissent – and political opponents – were ruthlessly quashed.

Today Lee Kuan Yew’s PAP remains firmly in control. There are currently six opposition lawmakers in parliament.

Other measures, such as corporal punishment, a ban on chewing gum and the government’s foray into matchmaking for Singapore’s brightest – to create smarter babies – led to perceptions of excessive state interference. However, Lee Kuan Yew remained unmoved.

“Whoever governs Singapore must have that iron in him. Or give it up,” Lee Kuan Yew told a rally in 1980.

“I’ve spent a whole lifetime building this and as long as I’m in charge, nobody is going to knock it down.”

Indian Wells 2015: Simona Halep wins BNP Paribas Open final after beating Jelena Jankovic

0

Romanian Simona Halep has won Indian Wells tournament after beating Serbian Jelena Jankovic 2-6 7-5 6-4.

2010 Indian Wells champion Jelena Jankovic, 30, looked in control after winning the first set with three breaks of serve and breaking early in set two.

World No 3 Simona Halep, 23, broke the Serb four times in a second set that saw six successive breaks.

The decider was also dominated by breaks of serve with four in a row but Simona Halep held at 3-3 and recorded the 18th break of the match to win it.

“Simona was unbelievable,” said Jelena Jankovic.

“We were running like two dogs and in the end I couldn’t keep up any more. She’s the younger one.”

Simona Halep, who received a bye to the final after Serena Williams pulled out of their semi-final with an injury, was expected to be fresher, having had three days off.

But it was Jelena Jankovic who began more aggressively, breaking in the opening game.Simona Halep wins Indian Wells 2015

Simona Halep broke back immediately but two more breaks by Jelena Jankovic saw her wrap up the first set.

The second set was a topsy-turvy affair with the players exchanging six breaks of serve before Simona Halep held and broke Jelena Jankovic to level the match.

The momentum seemed to be with the Romanian with a tiring Jelena Jankovic repeatedly looking to her coach for inspiration.

The former world No 1 broke fortuitously in game three when a backhand clipped the top of the net and landed in.

That sparked another flurry of service breaks that saw the score move on to 3-3.

Eventually Simona Halep held and then broke Jelena Jankovic’s serve to lead 5-3 but the Serb summoned up enough energy to hit back in the next.

However, fittingly, the match ended with another break.

A ninth double fault gifted Simona Halep three Championship points and she powered a forehand down the middle of the court to wrap up the biggest win of her career in two hours and 37 minutes.

Tunisia Bardo museum attack: Security video shows attackers inside museum

0

A video released by the Tunisian government shows gunmen walking through the Bardo museum during the attack that killed 25 people on March 18.

At one point the security camera footage, released by the interior ministry, shows the two attackers bumping into another man who is allowed to flee after the brief encounter.

Authorities said they had arrested more suspects in connection with the attack in the capital, Tunis.

The gunmen are said to have been trained in Libya in an area controlled by Islamic State (ISIS) militants.

ISIS has said it was behind the attack on the Bardo museum, which is next to Tunisia’s parliament.Security video Tunisia Bardo museum attack

The men, named as Yassine Laabidi and Hatem Khachnaoui, were killed in a gunfight with security forces inside the building. At least one of them was wearing an explosives belt.

Twenty foreigners were among those killed, including British, Japanese, French, Italian and Colombian tourists.

The footage shows the men carrying assault rifles and bags as they walk through the museum.

It also captures the moment a startled visitor comes face to face with them. The gunmen briefly point their guns at the man but allow him to run away as they make their way up a staircase.

Earlier, a spokeswoman for the prosecutor said substantial progress had been made in the investigation – but she did not give any details.

Authorities have arrested more than 20 suspects since the attack, including 10 people believed to have been directly involved.

“There is a large-scale campaign against the extremists,” interior ministry spokesman Mohamed Ali Aroui told reporters.

Tunisia has seen an upsurge in Islamist extremism since the 2011 revolution that ousted dictator Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali and sparked the Arab Spring.

The leader of Tunisia’s moderate Islamist party, Ennadha, says the country will continue to be under threat of attack as long as neighboring Libya remains unstable.

ISIS online threat to US military personnel

0

Pentagon is investigating an online threat allegedly made by Islamic State (ISIS) to about 100 of the US military personnel.

A list of names and addresses was posted on a website linked to ISIS alongside a call for them to be killed.

The group, which called itself the Islamic State Hacking Division, said it obtained the information by hacking servers and databases but US officials said most of the data was in the public domain.ISIS online threat to US military personnel

It said the personnel named had participated in US missions against ISIS.

The group urged its supporters in the US to “take the final step” and “deal with” those named.

A US defense official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said: “I can’t confirm the validity of the information, but we are looking into it.”

The US and its allies have been conducting air strikes against ISIS militants in Syria and Iraq since last September.

France local elections 2015: Marine Le Pen’s National Front expected to score big gains

French people are voting in local elections in which Marine Le Pen’s far-right National Front party (FN) is expected to score big gains.

Voters are electing representatives in 101 departments, or counties, charged with issues like schools and welfare.

Sunday’s first round will be followed a second in a week’s time.National Front France local elections 2015

Polls suggest that the Socialists of President Francois Hollande will suffer another setback, after defeats in municipal and EU elections last year.

The Socialists and the centre-right UMP have been joined by the FN, not as a freakish upstart but a serious contender for power.

The FN has benefited from economic stagnation, high unemployment, and general hostility to mainstream parties.

The governing Socialists and their left-wing allies are expected to take the biggest hit, losing many of the 61 departments they hold.

The FN is also taking voters from the UMP, which has struggled to unify behind a single leader since the defeat of Nicolas Sarkozy in the 2012 presidential election.

Yemen: US troops evacuate al-Anad air base

The US is withdrawing its troops from al-Anad air base in Yemen because of increasing insecurity there, Yemeni sources say.

About 100 troops, including Special Forces commandos, are leaving the base near the southern city of al-Houta, the officials said.

Al-Houta was stormed by al-Qaeda fighters on March 20, although they were later driven out by the Yemeni army.

The US military has not confirmed the evacuation.

It comes a day after suicide bombers killed at least 137 people in the capital Sanaa. Militants allied to Islamic State (ISIS) said they carried out the attack.US troops evacuate al-Anad air base in Yemen

There are mounting tensions between various powerful, armed elements in Yemen, including Houthi rebels, al-Qaeda and ISIS.

US troops at al-Anad air base have been training Yemeni fighters to launch attacks against al-Qaeda operatives.

On March 20, al-Qaeda fighters took control of al-Houta, near to the airbase. But the militants were later driven back by the army.

The US closed its embassy in Sanaa in February after Houthi rebel forces took over the city.

Yemen is the base of al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), a powerful offshoot of the jihadist militant group.

ISIS is also gaining ground in Yemen, after setting up a base in the country in November.

Abdullah Ocalan calls for PKK fighters to end armed struggle in Turkey

Abdullah Ocalan, the imprisoned leader of Kurdistan Workers’ Party in Turkey, has renewed a call for his fighters to end their armed struggle in the country.

In a message read out at a huge rally marking the Kurdish New Year, Abdullah Ocalan called for a congress to decide on abandoning the insurgency.

PKK has been waging a 30-year armed struggle for Kurdish independence.

Abdullah Ocalan called a ceasefire in 2013 and there are growing hopes of a long-term deal.

More than 40,000 people, mostly Kurds, have died in fighting for a Kurdish homeland in Turkey’s south-east.

Abdullah Ocalan has been in prison since 1999, serving a life sentence for treason.Abdullah Ocalan PKK

His message was delivered instead by Sirri Sureyya Onder, a pro-Kurdish politician who visited Abdullah Ocalan in jail on March 19.

Hundreds of thousands attended the celebration in Diyarbakir, the largest Kurdish-populated city in eastern Turkey, with many carrying images of the imprisoned leader.

A ceasefire announced by Abdullah Ocalan in 2013 still holds despite ongoing mistrust between the two sides.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan angered some Kurds by saying the country “never had a Kurdish problem”.

Turkey is facing parliamentary elections later this year, with analysts suggesting Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s comments were an attempt to shore-up nationalist support.

Brooklyn house fire kills 7 children

A New York City house fire has killed seven children in Brooklyn, officials say.

Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro said that the blaze started shortly after midnight and that those killed were all between 5 and 15 years old.

A woman believed to be the children’s mother and a teenager escaped by jumping out of second-floor windows.

Both survivors are in a critical condition in hospital, suffering from burns and smoke inhalation.Brooklyn house fire

Speaking at a press conference on March 21, Daniel Nigro said that the incident was the “largest tragedy by fire that this city has had in seven years”.

“It’s a tragedy for this family, it’s a tragedy for this community, it’s a tragedy for the city,” he added.

FDNY spokesman Jim Long said that more than 100 fire-fighters had worked to bring the blaze under control.

The fire was believed to have been started by a malfunctioning hot plate in the kitchen.

Daniel Nigro said that the family had become trapped on the second floor when the fire reached the stairs, cutting off their escape.

“There was no evidence of smoke detectors on either the first or the second floor that may have alerted this family to the fire,” he said.

South Korea, China and Japan hold first trilateral meeting in three years

0

China, Japan and South Korea’s foreign ministers are meeting for their first talks since 2012.

The meeting in Seoul is likely to focus on ways to ease regional tensions over territorial and diplomatic disputes.

The three states have strong economic ties but relations still suffer from unresolved issues dating back to Japan’s actions in World War Two.

A Chinese foreign ministry spokesman said he hoped the ministers would be able to “look forward into the future”.

South Korea’s Yun Byung-se welcomed Japan’s Fumio Kishida and China’s Wang Yi to South Korea’s capital on March 21.

Foreign ministers from China, Japan and South Korea last met in April 2012, for their sixth annual trilateral meeting.

It was cancelled the following year after Japanese PM Shinzo Abe angered China and South Korea by visiting a shrine that honors Japan’s war dead, including a number of senior war criminals.Japan, South Korea and China foreign ministers

China and South Korea have accused Tokyo of failing to adequately atone for aggression in World War Two, including its wartime use of s** slaves, known euphemistically as “comfort women”.

They also accuse Japan of whitewashing wartime atrocities in schoolbooks.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi expressed hope that South Korea would join the China-led Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) and South Korea’s Yun Byung-se said Seoul was reviewing its options, a South Korean official told Reuters after the meeting of the two ministers.

Fumio Kishida met his South Korean counterpart ahead of the trilateral meeting, and said that “despite difficult issues between the two countries”, the two sides would “continue communicating at various levels in order to strengthen our co-operation”.

The resumption of the foreign ministers’ meeting has fuelled hopes that a summit of the counties’ three leaders could be held later this year.

The poor relationship between Japan and South Korea has become a concern for the US, which sees the two countries as its main military allies in Asia.

Last week, US Assistant Secretary of State Daniel Russel described the tension between its “two friends” as a “strategic liability”.

Saturday’s meeting comes just days after China and Japan held their first high-level security talks in four years.

Those discussions are believed to have centered on the creation of a maritime communication hotline between the countries, following tensions over islands in the East China Sea.

There have been several disputes in recent years over the islands, known as Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China, and officials have expressed fears that a clash could trigger a full-blown conflict.

Carnufex carolinensis: Prehistoric crocodile discovered in North Carolina

A previously unknown prehistoric crocodile, whose bones were found in Chatham County, North Carolina, several years ago, has been named Carnufex carolinensis.

Paleontologist Lindsay Zanno says she chose Carnufex carolinensis which is Latin for “Carolina butcher”.

“I thought it had a nice ring,” said Lindsay Zanno, a research professor at N.C. State University who also runs the paleontology and geology lab at the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences.

“When I saw this animal, and when we reconstructed its skull, it was clearly an animal built for slicing flesh.”

The discovery of the Carolina butcher will be announced next week in a paper in the journal Scientific Reports and with a public presentation at the science museum in downtown Raleigh starting at 11 a.m.

The presentation includes an artist’s rendering of what the creature might have looked like, based on the few bones that were found and what’s known about its closest relatives.

This specimen was about 9 feet long and was probably a top predator, feasting on armored reptiles and early mammals found at the time, about 231 million years ago. This is the beginning of what’s known as the late Triassic Period, when what is now Chatham County was near the equator in a warm, humid environment of ferns and conifers.

Scientists know the age of the creature not from its bones but from the age of the rocks in which it was found, in a quarry more than a decade ago.

Photo Jorge Gonzalez/PA
Photo Jorge Gonzalez/PA

Museum curator Vincent Schneider found the bones mostly encased in rock and brought them back to the museum, where they remained a mystery for years.

Lindsay Zanno said Carnufex appears to be a missing link between creatures that stood on their hind legs and had skulls that resembled a Tyrannosaurus rex and later ones that moved around on all fours, like present-day crocs and alligators.

Scientists won’t know for sure until someone finds Carnufex’s hind limbs, but the animal’s small forelimbs suggest that it walked on its hind legs, Lindsay Zanno said.

The Carolina butcher is the second new ancient crocodile ancestor found near Raleigh and identified at the science museum in as many months. Last month, Appalachian State University geology professor Andrew B. Heckert announced the discovery of a new kind of aetosaur from the late Triassic Period with a distinctive ring of armor plates around its neck.

Suge Knight collapses in courtroom

Marion “Suge” Knight has been hospitalized after collapsing in court in Los Angeles.

It happened shortly after a judge ordered that Suge Knight’s bail be set at $25 million in a murder case.

Death Row Records co-founder’s defense lawyer said Suge Knight, 49, hit his head on a chair as he fell.

The music mogul has pleaded not guilty to murder, attempted murder and hit-and-run charges.

Suge Knight denies running down two men with a pickup truck in Los Angeles following an argument in January on the set of a commercial for the film Straight Outta Compton.

One of the men, 55-year-old Terry Carter, was killed, while the other was seriously injured.

After his collapse, lawyer Matthew Fletcher told the court that his client, who is diabetic and has a blood clot, hadn’t received any medication since March 19.

Matthew Fletcher claimed Suge Knight was being kept in solitary confinement without proper access to medication.

The lawyer also criticized the bail amount calling it “absurd” and “clearly excessive”.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Ronald S. Coen approved the amount because prosecutors noted that Suge Knight was already on bail over a separate robbery case.

Since his arrest, Suge Knight has suffered various health problems and this is the fourth time he’s had to be taken from the courthouse by ambulance.

He’d previously been hospitalized after complaining of chest pains and also said he’s now blind in one eye and has about 15% vision in the other.

Suge Knight has previous convictions for assault with a deadly weapon and could face 25 years to life in prison if he’s convicted at trial.
