Chris Evans Launches Auditions for New Top Gear Presenters

Top Gear new host, Chris Evans, has launched a search for the new show presenters on June 19.

An open audition invites fans to post a short video to the BBC. It should be no longer than 30 seconds, and must not feature cars, stunts or gimmicks – just the applicant talking directly to the camera.

Chris Evans, who was announced on June 17 as the replacement of Jeremy Clarkson on the BBC show, said the hosts could be “male, female, young or old, it doesn’t matter”.Chris Evans Top Gear auditions

“If you’re up for it, we want to hear from you, but you’ve got to know about cars,” Chris Evans said.

However, Chris Evans clarified, the job on offer was not necessarily that of presenter. “You could be auditioning to be a driver. You could be auditioning to be a film reporter. Or you could be auditioning to be a co-host.

“If we don’t find anybody who’s good enough, if there’s nobody right for this from these videos, we will not be appointing anyone. Or the whole new team might be from these videos. We don’t know.”

Chris Evans added that the age limit had been raised to 17: “Yesterday I said 16, sorry about that.”

Submissions can be made through the Top Gear website: bbc.co.uk/topgear.

The deadline is July 20.

Jeremy Clarkson Was NOT Offered Top Gear Return

Jeremy Clarkson was not offered to take back his Top Gear job, months after he was axed from the job, the BBC confirmed.

The former Top Gear host told the Sun, for whom he writes a regular column, that an unnamed BBC executive had “asked if I’d come back to Top Gear” last week.

However, Jeremy Clarkson, 55, said he refused: “It would have been impossible to make the show I’d want to make.”Jeremy Clarkson not offered Top Gear return

Meanwhile, Chris Evans has been announced as Top Gear new host.

A BBC spokesman said: “We haven’t offered another Top Gear contract.

“The BBC had placed on record its thanks to Jeremy for his broadcasting on the program and wish him well for the future.”

Jeremy Clarkson, who was fired for punching the show producer Oisin Tymon in March, told the Sun that returning to the Top Gear role “was never an option”.

He has also revealed plans for a new motoring show to rival Top Gear, which is set to return to BBC screens next April.

It is anticipated that Jeremy Clarkson’s former co-hosts, James May and Richard Hammond – who decided against returning to the BBC without him – will also join the new venture.

Building Cars Live: James May to Host New Car Show

Former Top Gear co-host James May has been announced as the presenter of BBC Two’s new car show Building Cars Live.

Springwatch‘s Kate Humble will co-host along with Ant Antstead, presenter on Channel 4’s For the Love of Cars.

Building Cars Live will go behind the scenes of the UK’s car manufacturing industry to explain the science and engineering involved.

The new show will consist of two 90 minute live episodes and will air in the autumn.

The programs will track in real time the transformation from raw materials to finished vehicle and will broadcast live from BMW’s Mini plant in Oxford.James May hosts Building Cars Live

A press release from the BBC announcing the show included a quote from James May saying: “I can’t wait to build a car. Live.”

There had been speculation over James May’s future on Top Gear after Jeremy Clarkson was dropped by the broadcaster in March following a “fracas” with the show producer, Oisin Tymon.

There had been reports James May and fellow host Richard Hammond had been offered massive pay deals to stay with the show.

With the announcement this week that Chris Evans will take over Jeremy Clarkson’s role, it was confirmed the two former presenters would not be returning for Top Gear new series.

James May will be seen once more on Top Gear on Jeremy Clarkson’s final episode which will air on June 28.

James May and Richard Hammond will present links from the studio and it will feature two films shot before Clarkson was dropped from the show.

Meanwhile Chris Evans has announced open auditions to find replacements for James May and Richard Hammond.

Why Kangaroos Tend to Use Their Left Hands During Common Tasks?

According to a new study published in the Current Biology, wild kangaroos tend to use their left hands during common tasks like grooming and feeding.

The researchers say this is the first demonstration of population-level “handedness” in a species other than humans, who are mostly right-handed.

They say evidence comes from hours spent observing multiple species in the wild.

Two species of roo and one wallaby all showed the left-handed trend; some other marsupials, which walk on all fours, did not show the same bias.

The research was conducted by Russian scientists from St Petersburg State University, who travelled to Australia to do the fieldwork. There they collaborated with Janeane Ingram, a wildlife ecologist and PhD student at the University of Tasmania.

Senior author Dr. Yegor Malashichev said there had been a “widespread notion” that handedness was a uniquely human phenomenon, until research in the last 10-20 years showed that asymmetry in behavior and brain structure was surprisingly widespread.Left handed kangaroo study

Examples of left- or right-handedness tended to be specific to particular behaviors, and were not consistent across a population.

“As one of our reviewers pointed out, laterality is also obvious in how parrots hold their food or how your dog shakes hands,” Janeane Ingram said.

“But these examples of lateralization have not been proven at the population level.”

The new study found a consistent left-handed bias across eastern grey kangaroos, red kangaroos, and red-necked wallabies – no matter whether the animals were grooming, feeding, or propping themselves up.

In terms of handedness, Dr. Yegor Malashichev said this confirmed for the first time that “we are not alone in the Universe; we are two – humans and kangaroos”.

Dr. Yegor Malashichev and his colleagues suggest that their discovery is an example of “parallel evolution”. This is because handedness seems to have appeared in primates, which belong in the group of placental mammals, as well as the marsupials in the new study, but not in related animals across these two branches of the evolutionary tree.

The researchers also argue that posture is an important factor. The left-handed trend was only seen in species that stand upright on their hind legs, using their forelimbs more regularly for tasks other than walking.

Similarly, they suggest, the transition to an upright posture may have been key to primates developing handedness.

It remains to be seen if there are particular aspects of the brain in these marsupials that have allowed handedness to develop – and whether they can explain why kangaroos, in contrast to predominantly right-handed humans, tend to be southpaws.

Dylann Roof Charged with Murder over Charleston Church Shooting

Charleston church shooting gunman Dylann Roof has been charged with nine counts of murder and one weapons possession charge, police say.

Dylann Roof, 21, shot dead nine people at the Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina, on June 17.

He is due to make his first court appearance on June 19.

Police are treating the killings at the Emanuel AME Church as a hate crime.

Dylann Roof was arrested the following day more than 200 miles away in North Carolina and then flown back to Charleston.

South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley has said Dylann Roof should face execution.

“We will absolutely want him to have the death penalty,” Nikki Haley told NBC News.Dylann Roof charged with murder for Charleston church shooting

Dylann Roof’s first court hearing is set for 14:00 local time, but it is likely he will appear via a video feed and not in person.

The victims of the shooting included a state senator.

President Barack Obama, speaking on June 18, described the event as yet another tragedy caused by guns in society.

The city’s mayor called the massacre an act of “pure, pure concentrated evil”.

An acquaintance of Dylann Roof said that the 21-year-old had complained that “blacks were taking over the world”.

Joey Meek said that he and Dylann Roof got drunk a few weeks ago, and his friend said “someone needed to do something about it for the white race”.

After the shooting, Dylann Roof absconded to North Carolina, where he was arrested in the town of Shelby – over 200 miles away from Charleston – on June 18.

Police located the suspect after receiving a tip from the public.

Local reports say that a florist who was late to work noticed Dylann Roof’s distinctive haircut and alerted police.

“I saw the pictures of him with the bowl cut. I said, <<I’ve seen that car for some reason.>> I look over, and it’s got a South Carolina tag on it,” florist Debbie Dills told the Shelby Star.

Debbie Dills followed Dylann Roof for 25 miles until police made the arrest.

Charleston officials are planning a prayer vigil for Friday evening, June 19.

Russia Threatens Retaliation over Asset Seizure in Belgium and France

Russia has protested over the seizure of the Russian state assets in Belgium, a move triggered by a court ruling over the now-defunct Yukos oil company.

The Belgian ambassador to Moscow was told that the asset seizure was “an openly hostile act” that “crudely violates the recognized norms of international law”.

In 2014, a court told Russia to pay Yukos shareholders $50 billion in compensation, after Yukos’s break-up.

A Russian state company took over Yukos.

In July 2014, an international arbitration court in The Hague said Russian officials had manipulated the legal system to bankrupt Yukos, and jail its boss, the oligarch Mikhail Khodorkovsky.Russia Belgium asset seizure over Yukos

France has also seized Russian state accounts in about 40 banks, along with eight or nine buildings, AFP news agency reports.

In a statement on Facebook, Mikhail Khodorkovsky, who spent 10 years in detention in Russia, expressed joy at the asset seizures.

“I am not a beneficiary in this process as the partners redeemed my share back in 2004. But this does not prevent me from sincerely rejoicing, as a Russian citizen, at what is happening now.

“This is a symbolic moment for our country,” Mikhail Khodorkovsky said, calling it “a signal that theft will not escape punishment, no matter how all-powerful the thief was”.

According to a Russian foreign ministry statement, Russia demanded that Belgium reverse its asset seizure. If no such action was taken, Russia warned, it would consider “appropriate reciprocal measures” against the Belgian embassy and unnamed Belgian officials.

Earlier, Russia’s Economic Development Minister Alexei Ulyukayev ruled out any compensation for Yukos shareholders. Their interests are now represented by a Gibraltar-registered holding company, GML.

Russia is appealing against the court ruling of last July, Alexei Ulyukayev said.

The asset seizures in Belgium and France also affect Russian media, including TASS news agency and state broadcaster VGTRK, Russian media report.

GML manager Tim Osborne was quoted in French media as saying similar legal action was being taken against Russian state assets in the UK and US.

Dylann Roof: Charleston Church Shooting Suspect to Appear in Court

South Carolina church shooting suspect Dylann Roof is due to make his first court appearance.

Dylann Storm Roof, 21, is suspected of shooting dead nine people at the Emanuel AME Churche in Charleston.

He was detained more than 200 miles away in North Carolina and flown back to Charleston.

Police are treating the killings as a hate crime.

Prayer vigils have been held in churches in Charleston and across the US for the six women and three men who died in the June 17 shooting.

Churches in Charleston were full to overflowing on June 18 as prayer services were held. Some services were held outdoors.Dylann Roof Charleston church shooting

Hundreds gathered outside the Emanuel AME Church, where the attack took place, to pay tribute.

Dylann Roof is due to appear in court via video link for a bail hearing on June 19. He is being held at a detention centre in the Charleston area, the county sheriff’s office said.

He was detained on June 18 after police acting on a tip-off stopped his car in Shelby, North Carolina. He waived his right to extradition and was flown back to South Carolina.

Police had earlier released CCTV images of the shooting suspect and the dark saloon car he had driven away in.

Dylann Roof’s social media profile suggests he was interested in white supremacy.

His Facebook page shows a picture of him wearing a jacket with flag-patches from apartheid-era South Africa and Rhodesia – the name of Zimbabwe during the era of white minority rule. He also had Confederate flag plate on his car.

Dalton Tyler, who said he was a friend of Dylann Roof, told ABC News the suspect had spoken in support of racial segregation and had said “he wanted to start a civil war”.

It emerged on Thursday that Dylann Roof had sat in a Bible study group at the church for nearly an hour before launching his attack.

“The suspect entered the group and was accepted by them, as they believed that he wanted to join them in this Bible study,” Charleston County Coroner Rae Wilson said.

She said he then became “very aggressive and violent”.

Eight people died at the scene and one person died later in hospital. There were three survivors.

The victims were named as Pastor Clementa Pinckney, 41; Cynthia Hurd, 54; Tywanza Sanders, 26; Ms Singleton, 45; Myra Thompson, 59; Ethel Lance, 70; Susie Jackson, 87; the Rev Daniel Simmons Sr, 74; and DePayne Doctor.

President Barack Obama said the killings again raised the issue of US gun ownership, saying: “At some point, we as a country have to reckon with the fact that this type of massacre does not happen in other advanced countries.”

The Emanuel church is the oldest African Methodist Episcopal (AME) church in the US south. Civil rights leader Martin Luther King gave a speech there in April 1962.

Brian Williams Joins MSNBC After Losing Nightly News Role

Brian Williams will not return to his role at NBC Nightly News but instead join the cable news network MSNBC to cover breaking news.

The anchor was suspended in February after reports that he had embellished his recollections about the Iraq war.

Lester Holt, who had been filling in during Brian Williams’ suspension, will take over the slot permanently.

He becomes the first African-American man to lead a top evening news program.Brian Williams joins MSNBC

Brian Williams said of viewers on June 18: “I’m determined to earn back their trust.”

He is scheduled to appear on the Today show on June 19 to further explain his new role.

Brian Williams, who was the face of NBC’s Nightly News since 2004, often spoke on chats shows of being shot down in a helicopter in Iraq.

But in early 2015, veterans who were aboard the helicopter began refuting his account over social media. Brian Williams and the network were forced to apologize.

“I made a mistake in recalling the events of 12 years ago,” Brian Williams said in February.

“I want to apologize. I said I was travelling in an aircraft that was hit by RPG [rocket-propelled grenade] fire. I was instead in a following aircraft.”

An internal NBC investigation found Brian Williams may have embellished other stories.

Brian Williams had signed a five-year contract in 2014 before the scandal.

For the past few weeks, Brian Williams and NBC Universal – the network’s corporate parent – have been negotiating new terms for the embattled newsman.

Venezuela: Brazilian Senators Attacked After Trying to Meet Jailed Opposition Leader Leopoldo Lopez

Eight Brazilian senators visiting Venezuela to meet jailed opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez say they had to flee after their bus was attacked.

The Brazilian opposition politicians were trying to meet former mayor Leopoldo Lopez, who is in jail accused of inciting violence during protests.

The senators said the bus was stoned as it travelled from Caracas airport.

Brazil’s foreign ministry says it will seek an explanation from the Venezuelan government.

One of the senators, Ronaldo Caiado, tweeted: “Our bus was under siege; they were beating and trying to break it. I filmed them throwing stones against the bus.”

Another, former presidential candidate Aecio Neves, said: “We are here to defend democracy and until now the Venezuelan government has shown little appreciation of it.”Brazilian senators attacked in Venezuela

The group returned to the airport and is reportedly waiting to go back to Brazil.

The incident occurred a few hours after the senators landed in Caracas airport.

Earlier this month former Spanish PM Felipe Gonzales left Caracas earlier than expected after his attempts to speak to Leopoldo Lopez, who has been in jail for more than a year.

Leopoldo Lopez is accused of inciting violence during protests last year. More than 40 people, from both sides of the political divide, were killed in months of demonstrations against the government of Nicolas Maduro.

President Nicolas Maduro’s government is wary of foreign support of Venezuelan opposition leaders.

The Brazilian Foreign Ministry said hostile acts against its politicians were unacceptable and promised to seek an explanation from Venezuela.

It released a statement June18 saying:“The Brazilian government regrets the incidents that affected this visit to Venezuela.”

“Hostile acts from protesters toward Brazilian lawmakers are unacceptable,” the statement added.

Denmark Elections 2015: Lars Lokke Rasmussen’s Center-Right Opposition Group Wins

Denmark’s center-right opposition parties have beaten the ruling coalition after a close general election in the country.

With all mainland votes counted, ex-PM Lars Lokke Rasmussen’s center-right group beat PM Helle Thorning-Schmidt’s center-left coalition, although her party is the largest.

Helle Thorning-Schmidt has now stood down as Social Democratic Party leader.

The right-wing, anti-immigration Danish People’s Party will become the second-largest in parliament.Lars Lokke Rasmussen bloc wins Denmark elections 2015

The DPP’s leader Kristian Thulesen Dahl had previously poured cold water on the idea of going into government.

Kristian Thulesen Dahl told Denmark’s Politiken he preferred “the little free bird role, which can make the Danish People’s Party come closer to getting our policy through in the real world than you think”.

He could yet be in a position to make a bid to become prime minister.

In a victory speech just before 01:30 local time, Lars Lokke Rasmussen – who led Denmark between 2009 and 2011 – said: “Four years ago, we returned the keys to the PM’s office. I said that time that they were only a loan.”

He said he would push for “control of the flow of refugees”.

Helle Thorning-Schmidt’s governing Social Democratic Party was the biggest party, winning at least 26.3% of the vote, according to Danish broadcaster DR.

Her allies failed to gain as much of the vote as those of the opposition and she stood down as leader after conceding defeat.

Helle Thorning-Schmidt said she was proud to have led the Social Democratic Party to the highest percentage of the vote, adding: “We lost at the finish line.”

According to DR, the Danish People’s Party won 21.1% of the vote, and Lars Lokke Rasmussen’s Denmark Liberal Party came third on 19.5%.

Greece Debt Talks: Eurogroup Meeting Ends with No Agreement

A meeting of European finance ministers in Luxembourg ended with no agreement on Greece’s debt.

The head of the Eurogroup, Jeroen Dijsselbloem, has said that Greece needs to seize a “last opportunity” to reach a deal with its creditors.

Jeroen Dijsselbloem called on Greece to submit “credible” proposals in the coming days.

To help tackle the crisis, an emergency summit of leaders from Eurozone nations has been called for June 22.

Jeroen Dijsselbloem highlighted that “very little time remains” as Greece’s current bailout program runs out this month.

“It is still possible to find an agreement and extend the current program before the end of the month, but the ball is clearly in the Greek court to seize that last opportunity,” he said.

The Greek finance minister, Yanis Varoufakis, said his nation had presented a “comprehensive” proposal and that disagreement only existed over spending equivalent to 0.5% of Greek GDP, which he says does not constitute a “dangerous impasse”.Greece debt talks Luxembourg

Yanis Varoufakis highlighted that Greece has already made a “gigantic adjustment” over the last five years and rejected any measures that would “jack-up” taxes and reduce benefits further.

He warned that negotiations were “dangerously close to a state of mind that accepts an accident”.

Greece has less than two weeks remaining to strike a deal with its creditors or face defaulting on an existing €1.6 billion loan repayment due to the IMF.

The country has already rolled a €300 million payment into those due on June 30.

If it fails to make the payment, Greece risks has to leave the eurozone and possibly also the EU.

The European Commission, the IMF and the European Central Bank (ECB) are unwilling to unlock bailout funds until Greece agrees to reforms.

They want Greece to implement a series of economic changes in areas such as pensions, VAT and on the budget surplus before releasing €7.2 billion of funds, which have been delayed since February.

Pressure was also raised on Greece today when the boss of the International Money Fund (IMF), Christine Lagarde, warned there was “no period of grace” for Greece over its impending debt repayment deadline.

Christine Lagarde said Greece would be in default on its loans from the IMF if it failed to make a €1.6 billion ($1.8 billion) payment on June 30.

Dylann Roof: Who Is Emanuel AME Church Gunman?

0

Charleston’s Emanuel AME Church shooting suspect Dylann Storm Roof had recently been given a weapon as a birthday present, according to the gunman’s uncle.

Dylann Roof’s uncle, Carson Cowles, told Reuters that Dylann’s father gave him a .45-calibre handgun.

Carson Cowles said he tried to mentor his 21-year-old nephew, who had no job or driver’s license, but Dylann Roof was not receptive to this idea.

Describing a phone call around the time of Dylann Roof’s birthday in April, Carson Cowles said: “I actually talked to him on the phone briefly for just a few moments and he was saying well I’m outside target practicing with my new gun.”

Dylann Roof’s jacket in a photo on his profile page prominently bears the flags of South Africa and Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe, from when the African nations were ruled by the countries’ white minorities.

Richard Cohen, president of Southern Poverty Law Center in Montgomery, Alabama, says Dylann Roof wasn’t known to his organization, and it is unclear whether he is connected to any of the 16 white supremacist organizations SPLC has identified as operating in South Carolina.Dylann Roof Emanuel AME Church shooting

He says Dylann Roof appears to be a “disaffected white supremacist” based on his Facebook page.

According to the suspect’s Facebook page, he went to White Knoll High School in Lexington, South Carolina, a two-hour drive from Charleston. It says he lives in the state capital Columbia.

A woman who answered a mobile phone belonging to his mother, Amelia Roof, declined to comment to Reuters.

“We will be doing no interviews ever,” she said, before hanging up.

Dylann Roof’s childhood friend, Joey Meek, alerted the FBI when he saw the grey top he was wearing, according to Meek’s mother, Kimberly Kozny.

She told the Associated Press that Roof had worn that sweatshirt over to their house many times as they played Xbox videogames in recent weeks.

Dylann Roof reportedly displayed a Confederate flag on his car license plate.

Court records in South Carolina show he was facing a drug charge and had previously been arrested for trespassing.

Police identified Dylann Roof after receiving tip-offs from friends and family who claimed to recognize him in surveillance footage from the church.

Officials circulated the image, appealing for help finding a suspect in a grey sweatshirt, blue jeans and Timberland boots.

The DoJ says it is investigating the shooting at the Emanuel AME Church as a hate crime.

Dylann Roof: Emanuel AME Church Suspected Gunman Arrested in North Carolina

Dylann Roof, who is suspected of killing nine people at the Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina, has been arrested.

Police said 21-year-old Dylann Roof, from Lexington, South Carolina, was detained during a traffic stop in Shelby, North Carolina.

Dylann Roof is reported to have sat in on a bible study meeting for a full hour before opening fire on the group.

Six women and three men, including the church pastor, were killed. A hate crimes investigation has been launched.

President Barack Obama said he and his wife had known several members of the Emanuel AME Church, including the pastor, Clementa Pinckney.

Barack Obama called the church a “sacred place” in the history of Charleston and spoke of his confidence that the congregation and the community would “rise again”.Dylann Roof Charleston Emanuel AME Church shooting suspect

He also raised the issue of gun ownership, saying “communities like this have had to endure tragedies like this too many times”.

“At some point, we as a country have to reckon with the fact that this type of massacre does not happen in other advanced countries,” the president said.

The weekly bible study meeting was under way in the church on Calhoun Street when the shooting unfolded at about 21:00 local time on Wednesday, June 17.

Charleston Police Chief Gregory Mullen said that when police arrived at the scene eight people were already dead in the church and one other person died later in hospital. There were three survivors, he added.

Police released images from surveillance cameras showing a suspect they described as white and clean shaven with a slender build, entering the building an hour before the shooting.

The man was later seen driving away in a black four-door saloon car.

Police and officials were quick to call it a hate crime, and the DoJ said it would open a federal hate crimes investigation.

Speaking after the arrest, Attorney General Loretta Lynch said they would be “looking at all of the facts, all of the motivations” to determine the best way to prosecute any case.

The killings have sent shockwaves through a community that has already experienced heightened racial tension in recent months.

Maisie Gregory: Little Girl Hit in Face by Saluting Soldier After Meeting Queen

A six-year-old girl named Maisie Gregory was hit in the face by a saluting soldier after she met Queen Elizabeth II in Cardiff.

The Queen was presented with a posy by Maisie as part of a regimental tradition.Maisie Gregory hit in face by saluting soldier

Dressed in a traditional Welsh costume, and giving an adorably wobbly curtsy, Maisie Gregory performed her bouquet-giving duties to perfection. But she had reckoned without the private standing next to her. As the Queen walked out of the Millennium Stadium, a uniformed army private raised his gloved hand enthusiastically to salute the monarch, and caught Maisie in the face.

The accident happened as the Queen honored The Royal Welsh with new colors during a ceremony at the Millennium Stadium.

Maisie’s father, Regimental Sergeant Major Martin Gregory, said his daughter has since seen the funny side.

Martin Gregory said: “She was a little bit upset but I let her wear my hat and carry my sword. She was soon cheerful and she’s running around now.”

Grey: EL James’ New Book Released on Christian Grey’s Birthday

E.L. James has released her new novel, Grey, that re-tells the events of Fifty Shades of Grey from the perspective of its antagonist, Christian Grey.

The new book could make the author even richer as stores scramble to order enough copies for fans.

Based on “unprecedented” pre-order figures, it is thought the book could achieve a similar level of success to the Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy, with more than 20 million copies sold worldwide.Grey released on Christian Grey birthday

Tom Tivnan, features and insight editor of The Bookseller, told The Guardian: “Fifty Shades of Grey is the biggest-selling book in Britain since records began, so even if the new book can manage only 20 per cent of what that sold, she will still sell almost a million copies.

“So, this is a huge, huge deal for Penguin Random House. I think we can comfortably say it will be the biggest book of the year, no problem.”

There are a number of scenes in the first book which fans are begging to be told by Christian’ Greys perspective, including his first meeting with Anastasia Steele and the night he randomly turned up at a night club to save her after she drunk dialed him.

Grey has been released on Christian Grey’s official birthday.

Sony Fails to Dismiss Cyber Attack Legal Action

Sony Pictures Entertainment has failed to dismiss a legal action brought by nine ex-employees over the last year’s cyber attack.

A judge said the plaintiffs could pursue claims that the film unit of the Sony corporation had been negligent.

The plaintiffs are seeking to hold Sony liable for not bolstering security after previous breaches.

“We are pleased that the court has properly recognized the harm to Sony’s employees,” said lawyer Michael Sobol.

Many Sony employees had their personal details made public in 2014 when a group calling itself Guardians of Peace leaked data from the studio’s computers.

The attack was described as an act of revenge motivated by Sony’s release of The Interview, a comedy about an assassination attempt on North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.Sony hack attack legal action

The nine plaintiffs claim Sony Pictures Entertainment violated a California confidentiality law by spurning security measures to stop the theft of employees’ salary and health data, Social Security numbers and other sensitive information.

Without ruling on their action’s merits, US District Judge Gary Klausner said Sony had created a “special relationship” with its employees by requiring them to provide personal information to be eligible for salaries and benefits.

The former workers said Sony’s negligence caused them economic harm and that the hack had been “an epic nightmare, much better suited to a cinematic thriller than to real life”.

The Interview, starring James Franco and Seth Rogen as journalists recruited by the CIA to assassinate Kim Jong-un, was initially withdrawn from cinemas but was later made available online.

Pope Francis Issues Encyclical on Fossil Fuels and Climate Change

Pope Francis has issued an encyclical, calling for fossil fuels to be “progressively replaced without delay”.

The pontiff urges the richer world to make changes in lifestyle and energy consumption to avert the unprecedented destruction of the ecosystem.

Environmentalists hope the message will spur on nations ahead of the UN climate conference in Paris in December.

However, parts of the document, leaked earlier this week, have already been criticized by some US conservatives.

The document has been dismissed by two Republican presidential candidates.

The encyclical, named “Laudato Si (Be Praised), On the Care of Our Common Home”, aims to inspire everyone – not just Roman Catholics – to protect the Earth.

The 192-page letter, which is the highest level teaching document a pope can issue, lays much of the blame for global warming on human activities.Pope Francis climate change encyclical

Pope Francis writes that: “We have come to see ourselves as her lords and masters, entitled to plunder her at will.

“The violence present in our hearts, wounded by sin, is also reflected in the symptoms of sickness evident in the soil, in the water, in the air and in all forms of life.”

The Pope criticizes what he calls a “collective selfishness”, but says that there is still time to stop the damage, calling for an end to consumerism and greed.

Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi launched the pontiff’s second encyclical at a news conference on June 18.

The release comes six months before international leaders gather in Paris to try to seal a deal to reduce carbon emissions.

It has been widely welcomed by environmental groups, with WWF president Yolanda Kakabadse saying it “adds a much-needed moral approach” to the debate on climate change.

Greenpeace leader Kumi Naidoo highlighted passages calling for policies that reduce carbon emissions, including by replacing fossil fuels with renewable energy.

But a leak of the document, published by Italy’s L’Espresso magazine on June 16, got a frosty response from skeptical conservatives in America, including two Roman Catholic presidential candidates.

Presidential hopeful Jeb Bush said he did not get his economic policy from his bishops, cardinals or pope.

Meanwhile Rick Santorum questioned whether Pope Francis was credible on the issue of climate science.

However, many academics have welcomed the pontiff’s input.

The UN’s climate change chief Christiana Figueres says the Pope’s message will influence talks in Paris this year on a deal to tackle global warming.

Developing countries are demanding firmer promises of financial help from rich countries so they can adapt to inevitable changes in the climate and get clean energy to avoid contributing to further warming.

Christiana Figueres said their position would be strengthened by Pope Francis’ insistence that this was the clear moral responsibility of the rich.

The encyclical will be welcomed by poor countries in Africa and Latin America.

The big question is how it will play in the USA, where it has already been dismissed by a Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush, who is a Catholic.

Leading Republicans have warned the UN that they will undo President Barack Obama’s climate policies – so if the encyclical sways any of the conservative Catholics in Congress that could prove significant.

Here’s How To Find A Fast Cash Injection For Your Business

0

Every business owner has struggled through a restless night wondering how to pay the bills. There are plenty of benefits to running a company and being your own boss. Unfortunately, it comes with the terrifying prospect of balancing the books and raking in a profit. In the early days, the outgoings can get on top of you quickly, and the budget is stretched to the limit. Sometimes, all you need is a quick injection of money. A short safety net could be just what you need to get things back on track.

In this post, we’ll show you a few ways to find money fast. It might just be enough to pay those invoices and give you some breathing room. However, it’s crucial that you set a realistic budget for yourself. Before you follow this advice, ensure you have a plan that draw real profit in the following months. If you don’t, you’ll just end up in the same position in the future.

The first option is seeking a loan from the bank. Small business loans are fairly easy to come by, and your current bank will be more than happy to set a meeting. Of course, this isn’t just free money, and there will be conditions attached. The lender may want to see your existing accounts to assess your business acumen thus far. They’ll certainly ask for a thorough business plan. The bank needs to know that you have a strict plan for monetization so they’ll get their money back.

Borrowing from friends and family is often a less daunting prospect. With a bank or lender, you may be subject to high interest levels. The loan itself may be secured against the business which could leave you bankrupt. Asking friends or family could provide you with a little more breathing room. Of course, your pride might take a hit, but in most cases, your family will be happy to help. Again, approach them with a full plan and repayment option.

You could always sell any existing business assets. If you’ve been trading for a while, you may have a stockpile of equipment or stock that is no longer needed. A company like Capital Asset Exchange and Trading can help you trade your old capital assets. This is perhaps the fastest route to a cash injection. It will also help you avoid any lingering debt and clear your business of unnecessary equipment.

Another alternative is seeking angel investment. You will exchange a percentage stake in your company for the money and skills of an investor. For many businesses, this is a big milestone and requires a fantastic pitch. You’ll need a good network to find the right investors too. Before you approach them, make sure your company is ready for the next step. Get the pitch right and you could bring a healthy cash flow and an experienced board member to the team.

Every business struggles through a rough patch. A quick injection of cash can help you ride the storm and get back on your feet. Just ensure that you are aware of the consequences and can afford any repayments. Good luck with your venture!

New $10 Bill to Feature a Woman

0

The new $10 bill will feature a woman, the Department of the Treasury has confirmed on June 17.

However, she has not been decided, the DoT said.

The redesigned $10 bill will debut in 2020 to mark the 100th anniversary of the US Constitution’s 19th amendment, which gave women the right to vote.

The treasury will seek the public’s input in the selection, looking for a “champion for our inclusive democracy”.

Former political leaders – all white men – currently headline US banknotes.

The woman who the DoT ultimately selects will replace Alexander Hamilton, a key figure in the American Revolution and the first secretary of the US Treasury.

Alexander Hamilton began appearing on the $10 bill in 1929. He along with diplomat and inventor Ben Franklin are the only non-presidents featured on current notes.Ten dollar bill to feature a woman

Women have been featured on US money before, but the notes and coins were not widely used. Most recently women’s rights activist Susan B. Anthony and Native American Sacagawea appeared on dollar coins, but both coins quickly went out circulation.

The primary goal of the redesign is to add measures to thwart counterfeiters, the DoT said. But women’s groups have recently pressed for more representation on US bills.

“We have only made changes to the faces on our currency a few times since bills were first put into circulation, and I’m proud that the new 10 will be the first bill in more than a century to feature the portrait of a woman,” said Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew.

In March, an independent group held a contest to select a woman to headline the $20 bill, replacing former President Andrew Jackson.

Abolitionist Harriet Tubman was the public’s top choice, beating out finalists, former first lady Eleanor Roosevelt, civil rights activist Rosa Parks and leader of the Cherokee nation Wilma Mankiller.

Harriet Tubman was known as the “conductor” of the Underground Railroad that allowed many slaves to escape to freedom in the 1850s.

Jacob Lew says the DoT will make a decision about the selected woman by the end of year.

Denmark Elections 2015: Helle Thorning-Schmidt vs. Lars Lokke Rasmussen

Denmark is voting in a general election on Thursday, June 18.

According to opinion polls, PM Helle Thorning-Schmidt’s center-left coalition and the centre-right opposition led by ex-PM Lars Lokke Rasmussen, appear to be neck and neck.

However, the pollsters have only canvassed the Danish mainland – and voters in Greenland and the Faroe Islands may decide the vote.

Minor issues like a Faroes fishing dispute could influence the result.Denmark Elections 2015 Helle Thorning-Schmidt and Lars Lokke Rasmussen

The islands’ fishing community is still angry at Helle Thorning-Schmidt for barring its boats from Danish ports in a 2013 dispute over alleged overfishing.

In reality it is the economy, rather than mackerel quotas, that tends to swing elections, and Helle Thorning-Schmidt’s Social Democrat party has staged a remarkable comeback in recent weeks as Danish finances improve.

Welfare and immigration are exercising Danish voters even more than the economy, with anger at perceived benefit tourism leading the traditionally pro-immigration Social Democrats to launch an advertising campaign with the slogan: “If you come to Denmark you should work.”

Lars Lokke Rasmussen, who led the country between 2009 and 2011, has suggested that benefits are so high that there is barely any incentive for Danes or immigrants to work.

Hours before the polls opened, party leaders took part in the final debate on Danish TV.

A poll released on June 16 put the centre-left bloc – the Social Democrats and their four coalition partners – on 50.1% and the centre-right bloc led by Lars Lokke Rasmussen on 49.9%.

Either one of Helle Thorning-Schmidt’s and Lars Lokke Rasmussen’s parties could win the most seats, only to find themselves the loser if the other can muster a larger coalition.

Polling suggests that Danes are looking outside of the two main parties for alternatives.

One of them, called the Alternative, is a green party that has the potential to tip the balance in the favor of the centre-left coalition.

On the other side, the Liberal Alliance is drawing young libertarians away from the centre-right.

Berkeley Balcony Collapse: Evidence of Water Damage Found

Specialists investigating the balcony collapse at University of California’s Berkeley campus that killed six people and injured seven others say water damage may have caused the structure to give way.

The balcony collapse happened during a 21st birthday party in the early hours of June 16.

Authorities said 13 people were on the fourth-floor balcony when it collapsed.

The victims were mostly Irish students who were living temporarily in the US as part of a work exchange program.Berkeley balcony collapse University of California campus

An initial investigation found that the balcony support’s wooden beams may not have been sealed properly at the time of construction, Berkeley Mayor Tom Bates said.

The mayor said: “More than likely, it was caused by rain and water damage.”

However, Tom Bates later stressed that this was not an official conclusion and that an investigation was still under way.

Building inspectors also ordered that two other balconies at the Library Gardens apartment building be demolished, saying they were unsafe and could collapse.

A former city official familiar with the apartment complex told the San Francisco Chronicle that the 5ft by 10ft balcony was “decorative” and not designed to hold a large number of people.

“This was meant just to be a place where someone could stand out for bit,” Carrie Olson told the publication.

“Not for something like 13 people.”

People left flowers and other tributes at the scene on June 17 as flags on both sides of the Atlantic flew at half-mast.

A memorial service was planned for June 17 in nearby Oakland, with victims’ relatives travelling from the Irish Republic to California.

Meanwhile, many in the Irish Republic and the US criticized coverage of the story in the New York Times, accusing the newspaper of “victim-blaming”.

The New York Times wrote a story about the work-visa program that some of the victims were on, mentioning “a series of high-profile episodes involving drunken partying and the wrecking of apartments”.

The newspaper’s public editor said in a blog that many of the complaints were valid. New York Times spokesperson Eileen Murphy said in an email: “It was never our intention to blame the victims and we apologize if the piece left that impression.”
