Solar Impulse 2 Breaks Record for Longest Solo Flight Without Refueling

Solar Impulse 2 has broken the record for the longest non-stop solo flight without refueling.

The solar-powered plane spent 76 hours into the latest leg of its attempt to circumnavigate the globe.

Pilot Andre Borschberg is making steady progress as he attempts the first solar-powered crossing of the Pacific.

After leaving Nagoya, Japan, early on June 29, Andre Borschberg has now passed Midway Island and is heading towards his destination of Kalaeloa, Hawaii.

At 76 hours into the journey, Andre Borschberg broke the record for the longest ever non-stop solo flight without refueling.

The previous mark was set by the American Steve Fossett in 2006.

Steve Fossett’s jet-powered Virgin GlobalFlyer vehicle completed a full circumnavigation of the world in that time, travelling more than 41,000km.

In contrast, Andre Borschberg’s Solar Impulse plane, which carries no fuel at all, had gone “only” some 5,500km in its 76 hours of flight.

On July 1, the Swiss pilot fly a holding pattern to time his encounter with an upcoming cold front to the optimum.

This will occur on July 2, and Andre Borschberg needs good sun conditions to get his aircraft up and over the weather system so that he can navigate the final stretch into Kalaeloa on July 3.

Precisely when this historic landing will occur is somewhat uncertain.Solar Impulse 2 solo flight record

Solar Impulse has some quite strict constraints to ensure the 72m-wingspan vehicle can put its wheels down safely.

These include a maximum cross wind of no more than four knots and a maximum overall wind speed of no more than 10 knots.

If it is too windy at ground level, Andre Borschberg will be instructed to circle overhead until the conditions calm down.

By then, Andre Borschberg will probably have spent more than 120 hours in the air.

So far, the pilot has coped remarkably well on very little sleep, and on July 1 even made time to joke around in his cockpit by donning a wig and fake beard.

When Andre Borschberg gets to Hawaii, he will be met by fellow adventurer and business partner, Bertrand Piccard.

Andre Borschberg and Bertrand Piccard have shared the flying duties in the single-seater plane’s round-the-world quest, which began in Abu Dhabi, UEA, back in March.

It is Bertrand Piccard – who famously made the first non-stop global circumnavigation in a balloon – who will fly the next leg from Kalaeloa to Phoenix, Arizona.

That is not quite as far as the current stint, but it still likely to take four days and nights.

From Phoenix, Solar Impulse 2 will head for New York and an Atlantic crossing that would eventually see the plane return to Abu Dhabi.

Andre Borschberg and Bertrand Piccard have used the various stopovers on their round-the-world journey to carry a campaigning message on the topic of clean technologies to local populations.

Their Solar Impulse plane is not intended as a demonstration of the future of aviation. Rather, it is to supposed to show off the capabilities of solar power in general.

Solar Impulse 2 is covered in 17,000 photovoltaic cells across its wings. These either power the vehicle’s electric motors directly, or charge its lithium-ion batteries, which sustain the plane during the night hours.

FIFA Corruption: US Sends Extradition Request to Switzerland

0

The US has asked Switzerland to extradite seven FIFA officials arrested on corruption charges in May, the Swiss authorities say.

Formal extradition requests were submitted on July 1, the Swiss Federal Office of Justice (FOJ) said.

The seven top executives arrested in Zurich are among 14 FIFA officials indicted on charges of “rampant, systemic, and deep-rooted” corruption.

The charges follow a major inquiry by the FBI.

The FOJ said Zurich police, acting on its behalf, would give the seven officials a hearing over the extradition requests.

The officials and their lawyers would have 14 days to respond to the request, which could be extended, the FOJ statement said.

After that, the FOJ would give its decision “within a few weeks”, but warned that any ruling could be challenged in both the federal criminal court and the federal supreme court.

Jeffrey Webb, FIFA vice-president in charge of North and Central America, was among those arrested by Swiss police in a raid on a luxury hotel in the early hours of May 27.

The seven are among 14 defendants the US has charged with racketeering, wire fraud, and money laundering conspiracies.

In a 47-count indictment unveiled in a New York federal court, they were accused of taking part “in a 24-year scheme to enrich themselves through the corruption of international soccer”.

The indictment alleges that US and South American sports marketing executives paid and agreed to pay “well over $150 million” in bribes and other illegal payments to obtain lucrative media and marketing rights to football tournaments.

The corruption was planned in the US, the indictment said. The use of US banks to transfer money appears to have been key to the investigation.

The charges follow a three-year FBI investigation. It was initially sparked by the bidding process for the Russia 2018 and Qatar 2022 World Cups, but was then widened to look back at FIFA’s dealings over two decades.

FIFA President Sepp Blatter has not been indicted, although both the US and Swiss authorities have said they may interview him as part of their investigations.

Tunisia Attack: Twelve Suspects Arrested in Connection with Sousse Massacre

Tunisian authorities have arrested twelve suspects in connection with the deadly attack in Sousse, an official has said.

Security forces were still hunting for two men suspected of having trained in Libya with gunman Seifeddine Rezgui who killed 38 people, he added.

Most of those killed on a beach in Sousse were British, along with other European holidaymakers.

ISIS militant group has claimed the attack as its own.

In March, two gunmen killed 22 people at the famous Bardo museum in Tunisia’s capital, Tunis.

“This is a group who were trained in Libya, and who had the same objective. Two attacked the Bardo and one attacked Sousse,” Lazhar Akremi, minister for parliamentary relations, said, Reuters news agency reports.

“Police are hunting for two more,” he is quoted as saying.

Lazhar Akremi did not say when the arrests were made.

Greece Default: Alexis Tsipras Offers New Concessions to Eurozone Partners

Greek PM Alexis Tsipras has made a defiant speech as cash withdrawal limits begin to bite for bank customers.

Alexis Tsipras promised Greeks their pensions and wages would be safe.

Earlier the prime minister offered new concessions to eurozone partners, accepting most conditions that were on the table before talks collapsed.

Germany says talks requested by Greece will not be possible until after a debt referendum called by Alexis Tsipras for July 5.

In his address on July 1, Alexis Tsipras thanked Greeks for their “calm” in the face of bank closures and said their salaries and pensions would “not be lost”.

He angrily denied he had a secret plan to take Greece out of the euro, calling those who accused him of this “liars”.

Greek banks did not open this week after the ECB froze their liquidity lifeline.Alexis Tsipras austerity speech

Withdrawals from cash machines are capped at just €60 a day and long queues have been forming outside banks.

However, up to 1,000 branches re-opened on July 1 to allow pensioners – many of whom do not use bank cards – a one-off weekly withdrawal of up to €120.

Many pensioners had waited outside banks from before dawn, only to be told to return on Thursday or Friday, the Associated Press reported.

Some pensioners were told their pensions had not yet been deposited, AP said.

Close to 300 pensioners marched on the Bank of Greece in Athens after being given only a small sum from banks in the morning instead of the entire €120.

The letter sent to creditors by PM Alexis Tsipras says he was prepared to accept a deal put forward last weekend, if a few changes were agreed.

European markets surged on the news Greece might be willing to accept a deal.

However, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said no new bailout talks would be possible before Greece holds Sunday’s referendum.

As well as seeking further amendments to the creditors’ proposals, Alexis Tsipras’ latest offer is tied explicitly to agreement on a request for a third bailout lasting two years and amounting to €29.1 billion.

His application for a third bailout was accompanied by a request for debt restructuring that other eurozone countries would, at this stage, be unwilling to consider.

Two key meetings are to take place to discuss aid for Greece, after Athens missed the deadline for a €1.5 billion ($1.7 billion) payment to the IMF on June 30.

Eurozone finance ministers were set to discuss Greece’s new proposal in a conference call.

The second meeting will see officials with the European Central Bank (ECB) deciding on whether to demand more collateral from Greek banks on emergency loans it has given them.

With the previous eurozone bailout expired, Greece no longer has access to billions of euros in funds.

Only three other countries are still in arrears to the IMF – Sudan, Somalia and Zimbabwe. Between them, they owe €1.6 billion, only marginally more than Greece.

Woman’s Hour Power List 2015: Caitlyn Jenner Among Most Influential Women in the World

Caitlyn Jenner has joined this year’s BBC Radio 4 Woman’s Hour Power List of top 10 influencers, alongside Nicola Surgeon, Angelina Jolie and Anna Wintour.

The list identifies women who have had an “exceptionally large impact”.

Caitlyn Jenner, formerly known as Bruce, is at No 7.

Former Olympian Bruce Jenner revealed the transition to Caitlyn on the cover of Vanity Fair last month.

Caitlyn Jenner, whose famous children include step-daughter Kim Kardashian and daughter Kendall Jenner, is honored for bringing the experience of being a trans woman to a global audience.

Both the Vanity Fair photoshoot and the ensuing #CallMeCaitlyn hashtag adopted by many fans on Twitter generated huge publicity.

Angelina Jolie made number three on the list with “Angelina-effect”.Caitlyn Jenner Womans Hour List 2015

The term was coined after the actress revealed her genetic predisposition to breast and ovarian cancer, sparking other women to seek out testing.

Angelina Jolie has spoken openly about her double mastectomy and having her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed to prevent cancer.

The Guardian‘s first female editor Katherine Viner was at No 4 on the list, just weeks after taking up the job, while Anna Wintour, editor-in-chief of American Vogue, was at No 2.

Whistles chief executive Jane Shepherdson, who was on the judging panel, said the editor “influences the world in what to wear, how to look, and who to celebrate.

“Like the captain of almost any other industry, Wintour’s word is almost law.”

The list was counted down during a special Woman’s Hour show from the BBC Radio Theatre, hosted by presenters Jane Garvey and Jenni Murray.

The panel of judges, headed up by journalist and broadcaster Emma Barnett and including human rights lawyer Helena Kennedy QC and Radio 1 DJ Gemma Cairney, looked at well-known women’s personal ability to influence others.

Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon is at No 1 following the Scottish National Party’s performance in this year’s general election, winning 56 our of 59 possible seats in Scotland.

Though Nicola Sturgeon didn’t stand as a candidate, the judges called her “the woman of the moment in terms of influence and hard power”.

Sia made No 6, having written for Beyonce, Rihanna, Jessie J and Katy Perry and achieving solo success with hits like Chandelier.

The 2014 Woman’s Hour Power List, entitled Game Changers, was topped by Doreen Lawrence, while Queen Elizabeth II topped the first list in 2013.

Woman’s Hour editor Alice Feinstein added: “The way power operates in today’s global, interconnected society is not straightforward – brokers of hard power like prime ministers, presidents and CEOs are no longer calling all the shots.

“What I wanted to examine in this year’s list of influencers is how women are operating outside traditional power structures to get things done.”

The Future of Literature: Interactive eReading with Nook for iPhone

Traditional books are becoming an outdated form of entertainment. Sure, the stories at the core of the reading experience have never stopped being engaging, but publishers also have to understand it is not the pioneer times anymore. People now have access to interactive forms of media such as the Internet and video games, not to mention animated and exciting forms of entertainment like TV and movies. The method by which a traditional book’s story is delivered – silent page skimming that involves no animation or interactivity – just does not cut it anymore when it comes to grabbing our attention. Largely in order to counter this fact, the “excitement” factor of reading books has been ramped up. Many publishers are utilizing the iPhone’s cutting edge graphics card and touch sensor technologies in combination with its ability to display eBooks in order to create an interactive and customizable reading experience. The list below details several of the biggest ways in which Nook’s app for iPhone is making reading interactive.

  • Get the Picture – Setting really is one of the most important elements of a story. If the setting is dreary or nondescript, it can rub off on the characters and the plot itself, making the reading experience unenjoyable. By including sweeping and panoramic depictions of the setting that the reader can interact with within the book, illustrators and publishers have found a way to make the setting an even clearer and more colorful presence than even the best writing can manage. With an incredibly vivid backdrop that has been effectively molded into the reader’s mind, the story’s other elements will be all the more impactful.

The-Future-of-Literature-Interactive-eReading-with-Nook-for-iPhone

  • Self-Testing – Many publishers producing interactive eBooks for Nook include the option for the reader to test his own recollection of what he has just read by incorporating elective quizzes throughout the book. You may feel that this is silly if you are reading for pleasure, but it is actually a great way to make sure you are fully understanding the story and really getting every penny’s worth out of your purchase. Another great use for this feature is that students can make sure they are understanding the concepts presented when reading one of the many interactive textbooks available on the Nook store.
  • Location-Based Reading – Because all iPhones have built-in GPS, your location can be used to change the content you read accordingly. The most obvious use of this is in electronic travel guides, which can adjust to guiding you around your local vicinity, but the feature can also be used in other creative ways, including the altering of locations mentioned in a book to correspond with places that would be relatable to the reader.
  • Moving Pictures – Unlike the other entries on this list, interactive eBooks’ abilities to include moving illustrations doesn’t actually add to the book’s plot – it is just meant to add to the excitement. Page after page of unanimated black and white cannot hold our shortened 21st century attention spans, and that is a big part of why books are not nearly as popular as they once were. With the full color, high definition, fluidly animated illustrations that the iPhone’s display allows, as well as the possibility to interact with the illustration that Nook allows, books take on a life that, under previous technology, they could not.
  • Interactive Demonstrations – Using the same technology as the moving pictures touched on above, book illustrators can fill you in on complex procedures much more easily than they can using words. This may be through use of an animated infographic or a short video, and it is especially useful in how-to books, mystery novels, and long, confusing stories.
  • Seeing is Believing – Sometimes, being told about how something works is just not enough to get us to truly believe it. Sure, reading about the method a character in a book used to solve a problem might get us to acknowledge and accept the solution, but an actual mini-game built into the page where we can recreate the steps ourselves will really get us to internalize the solution. Not only is putting yourself in the character’s shoes through interactivity fun, but it also helps us empathize with the character, becoming more invested in the plot and increasing reading satisfaction.

Having a give-and-take experience when you read a book instead of just being talked at adds an exciting element to reading, and interactivity truly is the future of literature. Out of the best reading apps for iPhone, Nook was the best at presenting readers with an enjoyable interactive eReading experience. The app’s crystal clear reading display and the fact that there are many interactive titles available on the Nook store have convinced readers everywhere that it is the most thrilling eReader app out there.

Grexit: Greece Fails to Pay €1.6 Billion Debt to IMF

Greece has failed to repay €1.6 billion loan to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), hours after eurozone ministers refused to extend its bailout.

However, eurozone ministers say they will discuss a last-minute request from Greece for a new two-year bailout on July 1.

Greece is the first advanced country to fail to repay a loan to the IMF and is now formally in arrears.

There are fears that this could put Greece at risk of leaving the euro.

The IMF confirmed that Greece had failed to make the payment, shortly after 22:00 GMT on June 30.

“We have informed our Executive Board that Greece is now in arrears and can only receive IMF financing once the arrears are cleared,” said IMF spokesman Gerry Rice.

Gerry Rice confirmed the IMF had received a request from Greece to extend the payment deadline, which he said would go to the board “in due course”.

With the eurozone bailout expired, Greece no longer has access to billions of euros in funds and could not meet its IMF repayment.

The European Central Bank (ECB) has also frozen its liquidity lifeline to Greek banks. Meanwhile, ratings agencies have further downgraded the country’s debt.

Eurogroup chairman and Dutch Finance Minister Jeroen Dijsselbloem earlier said it would be “crazy” to extend the Greek bailout beyond its June 30 deadline as Athens was refusing to accept the European proposals on the table.

Greece’s left-wing Syriza government, elected on an anti-austerity platform, has been in deadlock with its creditors for months over the terms of a third bailout.

Speaking after the conference call with other eurozone ministers, Jeroen Dijsselbloem said that a Greek request for a new €29.1 billion European aid program would be considered in a telephone conference on July 1.

According to new reports, Greece may submit new proposals on July 1 that rein in its spendingGreece fails to pay IMF debt 2015

Greece’s request on June 30 asked for funds from Europe’s bailout fund – the European Stability Mechanism – as well as a restructuring of Greece’s public debt.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel earlier said she had ruled out further negotiations until after July 5 referendum, which will ask Greeks if they want to accept the deal offered by their creditors.

The Greek government took the unilateral decision to hold a vote last weekend, angering eurozone ministers.

Cuban Thaw: US and Cuba to Announce Opening of Embassies

The United States and Cuba are to announce the opening of embassies in each other’s capitals, a senior US official has said.

The embassies opening is a major step in re-establishing diplomatic ties between the US and Cuba which were severed in 1961.

Relations had been frozen since the early 1960s when the US broke links and imposed a trade embargo with Cuba.

The US and Cuba agreed to normalize relations at the end of 2014.

Presidents Barack Obama and Raul Castro held historic talks in April 2015.

Since 1977, the US and Cuba have operated diplomatic missions called “interests sections” in each other’s capitals under the legal protection of Switzerland. However, they do not enjoy the same status as full embassies.

US officials said President Barack Obama would make a formal announcement from the White House on July 1.

It is still not clear exactly what the date will be for opening the embassies, but it is likely to be in mid-July.

The US State Department must give Congress two weeks’ warning before the embassy can open.

It is the latest major milestone in a thawing process between the two countries’ relations, which started with secret negotiations and was announced last December.

In April, Barack Obama and Raul Castro met for the first formal talks between the two countries’ leaders in more than half a century.

A month later, the US removed Cuba from its list of state sponsors of terrorism. Plans to resume ferry and air services between the US and Cuba were also announced.

Despite the new transport links, a Cuba travel ban is still in place for US citizens.

Cuba is also still subject to a US arms embargo which has been in place since 1962, though President Barack Obama has urged Congress to lift it.

The US broke off diplomatic relations with Cuba in 1959 after Fidel Castro and his brother Raul led a revolution toppling US-backed President Fulgencio Batista. The Castro brothers established a revolutionary socialist state with close ties to the Soviet Union.

In December 2014, Barack Obama and Raul Castro made a surprise announcement saying they would seek to re-establish diplomatic ties, ending more than 50 years of ill-will.

Hillary Clinton E-Mail Scandal: State Department Releases 3,000 Pages of E-Mails

More than 3,000 pages of emails from the private server former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton used while in office have been released by the State Department on June 30.

The correspondence, released online, covers March through December 2009.

Among the 1,900 emails released by the State Department, on July 11, 2009, Hillary Clinton received an email from “Jimmy” — presumably former President Jimmy Carter — titled “N. Korea.”

The message seems to be about freeing journalists Laura Ling and Euna Lee, who were charged and held with illegal passage into North Korea. It read:

The message read: “Hillary: As I explained to you on the phone, I don’t think it is appropriate to tell them that I will come only if they agree in advance to release the women. Your response was, in effect, <<They have already agreed.>> Is this correct? If not, I will go, by commercial airline if necessary, representing The Carter Center, and try to induce them to approve the release. JC”

Hillary Clinton forwarded the message onto a redacted email account with the comment “fyi.”

In May 2015, a District of Columbia judge ordered the State Department to release Hillary Clinton’s emails in batches ever 30 days, rejecting an agency plan to roll them out in early 2016.

The release will meet the court’s mandate that it match at least 7% of Hillary Clinton’s message traffic, department spokesman John Kirby said during a press briefing on June 30.

John Kirby tried to explain away the strange timing of the release.

“You have to understand the enormity of the task here. It is a lot of stuff to go through,” he told reporters, adding the agency was “working right up to the deadline” to get the emails out.

Questions over Hillary Clinton’s use of a private server while serving as secretary of State have dogged her candidacy since she entered the White House race in April.

Also on June 30, the State Department handed over 3,600 pages of correspondence to the House Select Committee on Benghazi. Four Americans, including Ambassador Chris Stevens, were killed in the attacks on the diplomatic outpost in Benghazi, Libya.

The emails from Susan Rice, the US ambassador to the United Nations at the time of the deadly 2012 assault, and former Hillary Clinton aides Cheryl Mills and Jake Sullivan were provided under a subpoena the GOP-controlled panel issued in March.

In a letter accompanying the document delivery, Hillary Clinton’s old agency said that “to the extent the materials produced relate to your inquiry, we do not believe they change the fundamental facts of the attacks on Benghazi”.

Donald Trump Files Lawsuit Against Univision

Donald Trump has filed a $500 million lawsuit against Spanish-language TV network Univision.

Univision had cancelled its contract to broadcast the Miss USA pageant which is co-owned by Donald Trump.

The network had said last week it would not air the Miss USA pageant because of what it called insulting remarks about Mexican immigrants.

Donald Trump is running for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination.Donald Trump sues Univision 2015

He has accused Univision of stifling his freedom of speech in order to boost the Democratic Party frontrunner, Hilary Clinton.

While announcing his candidacy earlier this month, Donald Trump had accused Mexico of sending rapists and other criminals to the US.

Donald Trump also pledged to build a “great wall” on the US border with Mexico and insisted it would be paid for by Mexicans.

He later insisted he was criticizing US lawmakers, not Mexican people.

NBC has also said it would not be airing the Miss USA and the Miss Universe pageants both owned by Donald Trump.

Responding to the announcement, Donald Trump said he would consider suing NBC.

White House 2016: Chris Christie Launches Bid for US President

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has officially launched his bid to become the next president of the United States.

The Republican said both political parties “have failed our country” and called for more compromise at a rally on Tuesday.

Many Republicans sought out Chris Christie, 52, to run in 2012, but he is now considered a long shot.

He is the 14th Republican to enter the race for the party’s nomination.

Chris Christie said he was running because Americans were “filled with anxiety because of bickering in Washington” and it was time for a strong leader to set the country on a new path.

“I mean what I say and I say what I mean, and that’s what America needs right now,” he added.

The outspoken governor said he was now heading out on the campaign trail to New Hampshire where he will hold the first of what is expected to be a series of town hall meetings with voters.

Chris Christie is hoping to use these sessions to turn around his political fortunes and launch a comeback in the polls.

His image was badly by a scandal in New Jersey known as “Bridgegate” that involved politically motivated lane closures on a busy bridge to New York.

A close ally of Chris Christie’s pleaded guilty to conspiracy charges last month but he has denied any wrongdoing.

Greece Requests New Bailout Deal from Eurozone

Greece has requested a new bailout deal from the eurozone, just hours before it must repay €1.6 billion to the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

The Greek government is asking for a new two-year €29.1 billion aid deal from a bailout mechanism for eurozone countries.

Eurozone finance ministers discussed the Greek offer in a teleconference on Tuesday evening, but made no decision.

If it fails to make the IMF payment, Greece could risk leaving the euro.

The European Commission, which is one of Greece’s creditors, wants Athens to raise taxes and cut welfare spending.

No advanced economy has ever missed a payment on an IMF loan.

Amid fears of a Greek default on its huge public debt of €323 billion – and a possible exit from the euro – long queues of people are continuing to snake from many cash machines in Greece, where withdrawals are capped at just €60 a day.

On Tuesday evening, thousands of pro-EU protesters braved stormy weather and gathered outside the Greek parliament in Athens to urge a “Yes” vote in a referendum on July 5 over whether the country should accept its creditors’ proposals.

It follows a similar demonstration by those advocating a “No” vote – the path preferred by PM Alexis Tsipras – on June 29.

Greek banks did not open this week after talks between Greece and its creditors broke down.

However, up to 1,000 bank branches will re-open from July 1 to allow pensioners – many of whom do not use bank cards – to withdraw up to €120.

The European Commission offered a slightly amended deal to Greece late on Monday night, which the Greek government did not accept.

Instead, Greece responded with a request for a two-year deal under the European Stability Mechanism (ESM), the bailout mechanism for eurozone countries whose aim is to maintain the stability of the euro. The ESM did not exist when Greece was bailed out in 2010 and 2012.

However, German Chancellor Angela Merkel has insisted that the eurozone’s wealthiest member will not enter into new aid negotiations with Greece before its weekend referendum.

“Before a referendum, as planned, is carried out, we won’t negotiate on anything new at all,” Angela Merkel said.

The ECB is believed to have disbursed virtually all of its emergency funds for Greece, amounting to €89 billion.

Indonesia: Military Plane Crash Kills at Least 100 People in Medan

A military transport plane crashed in a residential area of the Indonesian city of Medan killing more than 100 people.

The Hercules C-130 plane hit two houses and a hotel before bursting into flames, creating a huge fireball.

Air Force head Agus Supriatna visited the crash site and told reporters he believed there were no survivors among the 113 people on board.

At least 66 bodies have been recovered so far.

A major rescue operation is under way at the site which was covered in flames and thick black smoke.

There are reports that people are trapped inside wrecked buildings and the nearest hospital is continuing to receive bodies arriving from the crash site.

Many of the passengers are thought to have been relatives of servicemen and women.

Large crowds watched the emergency services search the flaming wreckage.

The plane had just taken off when it ran into trouble.

Agus Supriatna said that the pilot had asked to return to base because of technical difficulties.

“The plane crashed while it was turning right to return to the airport,” he said.

The Hercules transport plane was manufactured in 1964, but a military spokesman said he was convinced that it was in good condition.

Correspondents say that it is the second time in 10 years that a plane has crashed in Medan.

In September 2005, a Boeing 737 came down in a crowded residential area shortly after take-off from Medan’s Polonia airport, killing 143 people including 30 on the ground.

EU to Abolish Data Roaming Charges by June 2017

The European Union reached an agreement on June 30 that will end data roaming charges for people travelling within its 28 member countries as of June 2017.

The ban will be preceded by a 14-month interim period, in which companies can still add surcharges – but at a reduced rate.

A deal, reached on June 30, also sets out rules requiring telecom operators to treat most internet traffic equally.

However, the net neutrality rules will allow blocking for some reasons, such as to counter cyber-attacks.

From April 2016, telecoms operators will be able to add a surcharge of no more than:

  • €0.05 extra per minute for calls
  • €0.02 extra per SMS sent
  • €0.05 extra per megabyte of data used

The cap would make roaming within the EU 75% cheaper during the interim period, the European Commission said.EU data roaming charges

The agreement is the culmination of years of campaigning to cut roaming charges and to define the EU nations’ approach to regulating internet traffic – particularly in light of the US adoption of net-neutrality rules.

It largely follows proposals put forward in March 2015, which analysts said were a weaker version of what European regulators had originally promised.

It will enshrine the principle of net neutrality, which stops internet service providers (ISPs) favoring some internet traffic, in European law for the first time.

However, as mooted in March, there will be exceptions to those rules.

ISPs will be able to favor services that require high-quality internet connections, such as internet TVs, as long as they do not impinge on the overall quality of internet traffic.

The commission said they would also be able to throttle traffic if it was in the public interest to do so.

The agreement will be presented to the EU’s member states between July and December 2015 for formal adoption.

The Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) – the fourth largest grouping of lawmakers in the European Parliament – has previously criticized regulators for trying to water down plans to end data roaming.

But it welcomed today’s announcement.

The president of the ALDE group, Guy Verhofstadt, said the “great roaming rip-off” was to be brought to an end.

The ALDE group blamed the delay in successfully negotiating the deal on member states, which have been accused of seeking to protect their national operators in the past.

SMS Pioneer Matti Makkonen Dies at 63

Finnish pioneer of texting tech Matti Makkonen has died at the age of 63 after an illness.

Matti Makkonen became known as the father of SMS after developing the idea of sending messages via mobile networks.

Despite the nickname, he was often quick to point out that he did not invent the technology single-handedly.

Speaking on the 20th anniversary of the first text message, Matti Makkonen said that he considered the development of SMS a joint effort and that it was Nokia who helped to popularize the service.Matti Makkonen dead at 63

“The real launch of the service, as I see it, was when Nokia introduced the first phone that enabled easy writing of messages (Nokia 2010 in 1994),” he said.

Matti Makkonen added that he did not use “txt spk” himself, though he pointed out that texting could be thought of as having had an impact on the development of language.

Jarmo Matilainen, managing director of Finnish telecoms group Finnet Association, had been working with Matti Makkonen, himself a former managing director of Finnet Ltd, in recent years.

He described Matti Makkonen as a “grand old man of the mobile industry”.

Although the use of SMS has begun to fall, it remains popular worldwide with trillions of texts sent every year.

Leap Second 2015: Extra Second Added to Official Time on June 30

On June 30, the entire world will get an additional second at midnight.

Midnight will come later on Tuesday as an extra second is added to the official time set by atomic clocks.

The “leap second” means the last minute of June will have 61 seconds in it.

Leap seconds – and leap years – are added as basic ways to keep the clock in sync with the Earth and its seasons.

A leap second is a one-second adjustment that is occasionally applied to Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) in order to keep its time of day close to the mean solar time, or UT1. Without such a correction, time reckoned by Earth’s rotation drifts away from atomic time because of irregularities in the Earth’s rate of rotation.

However, there are concerns the extra second could cause problems for some computer systems because it has to be added manually.

Timekeepers are divided over whether to keep the additional unit of time – and the issue is set to be debated at a meeting later this year.

The addition will mean that the last minute of June will have 61 seconds; while 23:59:59 usually becomes 00:00:00, the leap second will ensure the time becomes 23:59:60.Leap Second 2015

Basically, our clocks are better at keeping time than the Earth is. UTC is based on an atomic clock, which calculates the length of a second based on (very predictable) changes in cesium atoms. It takes more than a million years to lose a second on atomic time.

News coverage has focused on the potential for software problems that could affect financial trading and other operations around the world.

Because the irregularity of adding leap seconds causes problems for computer networks, several proposals have been put forward to abolish them.

The issue is still being considered by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) and is set to be discussed at the World Radiocommunication Conference in Geneva in November this year.

Delegates will aim to reach a decision to either end leap seconds or adopt a technical solution to reduce the problems they cause.

Since this system of correction was implemented in 1972, 25 such leap seconds have been inserted. The most recent one happened on June 30, 2012 at 23:59:60 UTC.

Japan: Two Dead in Shinkansen Bullet Train Fire

Two people have died in Japan after one of them set himself on fire on board a Shinkansen bullet train, public broadcaster NHK reports.

The man had poured fuel over himself in the first carriage of the train, a Japan Rail spokesman said.

The train was going from Tokyo to Osaka with about 1,000 people on board.

It was near Odawara city when the emergency stop button was pressed – local TV media showed pictures of the train halted with white smoke inside.Japan Shinkansen bullet train fire

At least six others are injured, fire officials said. All trains on the Tokyo-Osaka high speed line have been stopped.

Officials have given no indication of the man’s motives but are treating the incident as a suicide.

Local media said the incident took place at 11:30 AM local time while the train was between Yokohama and Odawara.

Japan Rail officials said the train came to a stop after the emergency button was pressed and the man who set himself on fire was then discovered near the toilet stall.

The Kyodo news agency quoted transport officials as saying the driver had tried to put out the fire.

The other dead passenger, a woman, was reportedly found at the other end of the carriage.

A number of people were reported to be suffering from the effects of smoke inhalation. Television footage showed people being removed from the train by emergency services and carried across the tracks on stretchers.

Bullet trains, which have a good safety history, travel at speeds of up to 198 mph.

Greece Debt Referendum Controversial Question

The question which will be put to Greek voters on July 5 will not be as simple as whether they want to stay in the euro or not.

Instead it asks Greeks to approve or reject the specific terms laid out by Greece’s creditors.

“Should the agreement plan submitted by the European Commission, European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund to the June 25 eurogroup and consisting of two parts, which form their single proposal, be accepted? The first document is titled <<Reforms for the completion of the Current Program and Beyond>> and the second <<Preliminary Debt Sustainability Analysis>>.

“Not approved/NO

“Approved/YES”

The two appendix documents – “Reforms for the completion of the current program and beyond” and “Preliminary debt sustainability analysis” – don’t sound much more easily digestible than the ballot.

There is still a question over when and how voters will be presented with those documents, and whether world-class economists will be on hand at polling stations to explain them.

As well as being a little bit dense, the Greek ballot also controversially puts the “No” option – favored by the Greek government – above the “Yes” option, leading some to accuse it of bias.

Greece Bailout Referendum: PM Alexis Tsipras Asks Greeks to Vote No

Greece’s Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has urged population to reject international creditors’ demands in a snap referendum on the country’s debt crisis due on July 5.

Alexis Tsipras said a clear vote against austerity would help Greece negotiate a better settlement to the crisis.

Otherwise, the prime minister warned, he would not stay in office to oversee more cuts.

Greece’s bailout expires on June 30, the same day it faces a deadline to repay a €1.6 billion loan to the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

The loan is to be repaid by 18:00 Washington time (22:00 GMT).

EU leaders have warned that a rejection of the creditors’ proposals on July 5 would mean Greece leaving the eurozone – though Alexis Tsipras says he does not want this to happen.

Talks between Greece and its creditors broke down last week, leading to Greek banks having to shut this week. The uncertainty also caused stock markets to fall sharply on June 29.Alexis Tsipras Greece bailout referendum

Asian markets rebounded on June 30, with stock markets in Tokyo, Hong Kong and Seoul all rising compared with June 29.

Tens of thousands of people gathered outside the Greek parliament in Athens on Monday evening in a show of support for the government’s proposals. A rival protest organized by those calling for a “Yes” vote is due later on Tuesday, June 30.

Speaking live on state TV on Monday evening, PM Alexis Tsipras appealed to Greeks to reject the creditors’ proposals, saying this would give Greece “more powerful weapons” to take to the negotiating table.

“We ask you to reject it with all the might of your soul, with the greatest margin possible,” he said.

Alexis Tsipras told viewers he did not believe the creditors wanted Greece out of the eurozone “because the cost is immense”.

He also hinted strongly that he would resign if the result of the referendum was a “Yes” vote.

“If the Greek people want to proceed with austerity plans in perpetuity, which will leave us unable to lift our head… we will respect it, but we will not be the ones to carry it out,” Alexis Tsipras said.

The Greek government has already been forced to order all banks to be closed until July 6 after the European Central Bank (ECB) decided not to extend its emergency funding.

The ECB is believed to have disbursed virtually all of its ceiling for funds, amounting to €89 billion.

Long queues of people were seen snaking outside ATMs on June 29, with withdrawals capped at just €60 a day.

Elderly people, many without bank cards, were seen waiting outside closed bank branches in the hope of getting access to funds.

New footage has emerged of the attack at the Tunisian resort of Sousse on June 26, which left 38 people, mostly tourists, dead.

It was filmed by a staff member at one of the hotels where the shootings took place.

The unnamed hotel worker chased Seifeddine Rezgui moments after he slaughtered 38 innocent tourists including 18 Britons.Tunisia attack filmed by hotel worker

The man can be seen running after Seifeddine Rezgui as the ISIS militant selects his targets.

At one point he even picks up what appears to be a bottle of olive oil as he attempts to sneak up behind the 23-year-old assassin to disarm him.

The 11-minute video was released as Tunisia made its first arrests in connection with the terror attack.

Tunisia’s Interior Minister Najem Gharsalli said: “We have started by arresting a first group, a significant number of people, from the network that was behind this terrorist criminal.”

Najem Gharsalli added that officials were still verifying whether Seifeddine Rezgui had been trained in Libya in jihadist camps.
