Rihanna on the shortlist to play Whitney Houston role in a singer’s biopic

Just few days after Whitney Houston’s funeral it was emerged that some of Hollywood’s biggest female names are scrambling to win the role of the legendary star in a life story movie.

It appears that Rihanna, 24, is among the shortlist of talent who are being considered for a biopic of the late singer.

Whitney Houston’s record label boss and close friend Clive Davis is at the helm of the project and he reportedly wants to get a script finalized as soon as possible so filming can begin.

Rihanna is in the running for the lead role as is Dreamgirls star Jennifer Hudson, 30.

Actress Vivica Fox, 47, and American Idol singer Jordin Sparks, 22, are also being considered for the movie and Will Smith’s 11-year-old daughter Willow is thought to be portraying the actress as a child.

Although movie executives are hoping Rihanna will sign up for the film, it was reported that she already turned down the chance to remake Whitney Houston’s The Bodyguard last year.

Rihanna told OK! magazine: “I hate it when singers do singing movies all the time, because you can never look at them as anybody else. I want to play a character. My whole life is playing Rihanna; being a singer won’t be a stretch for me.”

Whitney Houston’s life story had been discussed before her death and she was excited about the project.

A source told the People newspaper: “Whitney knew about the project and was excited to see where it would lead.

“It’s hoped the biopic will be as successful as Tina Turner movie What’s Love Got To Do With It, which landed two Oscar nominations for Angela Bassett and Laurence Fishburne who played Tina and Ike Turner.”

Why people who smoke cannabis are slackers and they don’t want to work

Smoking marijuana is tied to less motivation at work, a new study finding suggests.

The author of the study said it can’t prove whether that’s due to the drug’s effects, the social environment in which it’s used or whether pot smokers are just more likely to be laid-back from the get-go.

Christer Hyggen, researcher at the Oslo-based social research institute NOVA, suspects pot is the culprit, another possible explanation is that people who aren’t so happy with their work situation or motivated on the job are more likely turn to drugs.

“There’s a popular belief that people who smoke cannabis are slackers and that they don’t want to work,” Christer Hyggen told Reuters Health.

To see how well that perception held up, Christer Hyggen analyzed data from a 25-year-long study of close to 1,500 Norwegians. Starting in 1987, when they were in their late teens and early 20’s, participants filled out surveys that included questions on their recent pot use on five different occasions, into their 40’s.

They also rated their attitudes on statements that reflected work commitment, such as “It is very important for me to have a job” and “I feel restless when I have no work to do”, ranked on a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 reflecting the most commitment.

People who reported smoking in the past year generally reported less dedication to work than abstainers, according to findings published in the journal Addiction.

The pattern held after Christer Hyggen took into account their mental health, satisfaction with their work environment, their economic background and how much alcohol they drank.

Christer Hyggen also found that those who only reported recent smoking on one survey – “the experimenters” – tended to be as committed as abstainers as they got older. That wasn’t the case for participants who repeatedly acknowledged marijuana use: their work commitment continued to decline into adulthood, and remained significantly below that of never-smokers.

By the last survey, in 2010, the 63 repeat users had an average score of 3.9 on questions of work commitment. That compared to scores between 4.2 and 4.3 in participants who had only experimented with marijuana or never tried it, including those who said their friends used the drug but they didn’t.

The findings suggested that over time “people who quit smoking cannabis increase their work commitment and people who take up smoking cannabis reduce their work commitment”.

While the results can’t prove a cause-and-effect relationship, “we were able to at least close in on this association”.

Such a link fits logically, according to another researcher not involved in the study.

“For adolescents who are engaged in marijuana use and substance use, to the extent that that decreases or limits the academic achievement they would have achieved otherwise, that would limit their employment opportunities,” said Kimberly Henry, from Colorado State University in Fort Collins, who has studied marijuana and truancy in adolescents.

“I think like many of these kinds of behaviors, there is kind of a spiral cycle where one reinforces the other,” she said.

Christer Hyggen said that it’s not a bad idea to stay away from drugs including marijuana.

“At the same time I don’t think we should be overly afraid of people experimenting with drugs in youth,” he said, as young people with that type of marijuana use didn’t end up with a diminished work ethic as adults.

Kimberly Henry agreed that heavier marijuana use is what’s worrisome when it comes to school and work performance.

“This idea that makes sense from theory and just conventional wisdom is that it’s the higher-level use that’s probably causing the most problems,” she said.

“One per cent” arrogant banker left $1.33 on a $133.54 bill after dining at True Food Kitchen

A banker dining at True Food Kitchen restaurant in Newport Beach, California, left only $1.33 on a $133.54 tab, enforcing his position as the “one per cent”.

In addition, the arrogant banker gave the server, Breanna, another tip: “Get a real job.”

His belligerent behavior at the restaurant was documented by his dining companion, who posted a photo of the receipt to Twitter, alerting Eater’s Receiprocity blog.

The post – and corresponding blog – was later deleted.

FutureExBanker wrote in a now-deleted post: “I work in the corporate office of a major bank for a boss who represents everything wrong with the financial industry.”

He said that his boss will tip exactly one per cent of the bill “every time he feels the server doesn’t sufficiently bow down to his Holiness.”

The disgruntled employee continued: “[My boss] has blatant disregard and outright contempt for everyone and everything he deems beneath him.

“On top of that, he’s a complete and utter tool.”

While servers often receive the brunt of a diner’s anger in form of a low or non-existent tip, it is customary to tip a minimum of 15% for good service.

A hostess for True Food Kitchen told LAList.com that she had heard about the receipt but could neither confirm nor deny if it was real, nor if she remembered the customer.

“We have no statement on the issue,” the hostess said.

Vice President of operations for True Food Kitchen told the Huffington Post that the receipt in question is real, but they’re in the process of tracking him down.

He added the restaurant will do “everything they can to make it up to (Breanna) somehow.”

“We are the 99 per cent” was runner up to “occupy” for 2011’s word of the year. The phrase is closely tied to the Occupy Wall Street movement, and states that one per cent of Americans have a disproportionate amount of wealth.

The Wall Street Journal states that someone must be making at least $506,000 before joining the elite one per cent of top American earners.

Oscars: the glamour of the old Hollywood iconic stars

The A-listers are currently sweeping into Hollywood as the biggest event in the movie industry calendar looms tonight, Oscars 2012.

For all the star quality brought to the red carpet by the likes of Angelina Jolie, Kate Winslet, Rooney Mara and Halle Berry, it is the enduring icons of the golden age that still show the A-listers how it should be done.

The golden generations’ pictures capture the sophistication and allure of stars on awards nights more than half a century ago.

In one, Audrey Hepburn grins and sports an elfin haircut while clutching her Oscar in 1953, for her breakout role in Roman Holiday alongside Gregory Peck.

Frank Sinatra’s career was on the wane when he won the Best Supporting Actor award in the same year for the wartime drama From Here To Eternity.

After Marlon Brando won the Academy Award for On The Waterfront it was stolen, finally turning up in a London auction house who contacted the actor and informed him that they had it. Before that the two-time Best Actor winner had been using it to help hold his front door open.

A teenage Natalie Wood glances excitedly in the mirror as she is primped and preened in preparation for the Oscars in a Warner Brothers studio dressing room – the night she won a Best Supporting Actress Award for her role in the 1955 film Rebel Without A Cause.

Kirk Douglas is seen charming the crowd in 1954 as he enters the Academy Awards ceremony. He was nominated three times for Best Actor but never won. Kirk Douglas received a Honorary award in 1996 for “50 years as a moral and creative force in the motion picture community”.

In other pictures, Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly wait with apparent nerves backstage to present an award. They are both dressed in full-skirted gowns with evening gloves and hair in elegant chignons.

A dashing Clark Gable arrives with Kelly, wrapped in a fur stole, at another ceremony while one of Tinseltown’s greatest romances – Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart radiate glamour.

The first awards were handed out to a select 15 in front of a crowd of 270 on May 16, 1929, at a private brunch in the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel.

The root of where the name Oscar comes has become a highly contested Hollywood legend. One biography of Bette Davis claims that she named the Oscar after her first husband – band leader Harmon Oscar Nelson.

Another claimed origin is that the Academy’s secretary, Margaret Herrick, first saw the award in 1931 and made reference to the statuette reminding her of her “Uncle Oscar”. The trophy was officially dubbed the Oscar in 1939 by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences.

The 84th Academy Awards will be hosted by Billy Crystal at the Kodak theatre tonight. It is televised live across the U.S. and is watched by around 40 million Americans.

Oscars 2012: The Artist, the silent black and white French film, leads the race

The silent black and white French film The Artist is the clear favorite to take the coveted best picture prize as the final countdown to the 2012 Oscars has begun.

The Artist has won most of the major pre-Oscar honors during awards season.

The film has 10 nominations in total, while Martin Scorsese’s 3D family film Hugo leads the race with 11, including best film and director.

The 84th Academy Awards takes place on Sunday and will be hosted by Billy Crystal.

Billy Crystal is back for his ninth stint as host, with Oscar-watchers predicting lots of silent film gags and jibes about the recent legal wrangle over the Kodak-branded theatre where the Oscars is held.

Billy Crystal himself is giving nothing away, but tweeted this week: “First rehearsal: They said keep it <<fresh and new>>. This from an industry that just brought us Fast & Furious 5 and Harry Potter 7, part 2.”

The final round of voting by the Academy’s 5,783 members ended on Tuesday. Outside the venue, a section of Hollywood Boulevard has been sealed off and the red carpet is in place.

Industry newspaper The Hollywood Reporter says The Artist’s predicted win for best picture follows its victory in the two strongest “Oscar bellwethers”, the Producers Guild of America and the Directors Guild of America awards.

“This French-financed, Hollywood-shot, Harvey Weinstein-distributed love letter to the movies has gone on to seduce Hollywood since being unveiled at Cannes in May.

“It is now poised to become the first silent film in 83 years and the first black-and-white film in 18 years to win the top Oscar.”

A change in the Academy voting rules means that there are nine films in the best picture race this year.

Alongside The Artist and Hugo, those in the running include War Horse, Moneyball, The Tree Of Life, Midnight In Paris, The Help, The Descendants, and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close.

George Clooney and Brad Pitt are both up for best actor, and Meryl Streep has her 17th Oscar nomination for her portrayal of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady.

Meryl Streep has won two Oscars – best supporting actress for 1979’s Kramer vs Kramer and best actress for 1982’s Sophie’s Choice – but has been overlooked on her last 12 attempts.

Oscar pundits predict a close race between Meryl Streep and Viola Davies, for her performance as maid Aibileen Clark in civil rights drama The Help.

In the supporting actress category, The Help’s Octavia Spencer is the frontrunner, ahead of fellow cast member Jessica Chastain, and Melissa McCarthy and Britain’s Janet McTeer – for Bridesmaids and Albert Nobbs respectively.

Unusually, this year’s race for best supporting actor boasts two octogenarians: Christopher Plummer for Beginners and Max von Sydow for Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close.

Both are 82, and if either win they would become the oldest recipient of an acting award. The record is currently held by Jessica Tandy, who won for Driving Miss Daisy, aged 80.

Christopher Plummer is widely predicted to take the statuette for his role as an elderly father who comes out as gay after his wife dies.

The others in the category are Nick Nolte, for Warrior; Kenneth Branagh, for My Week with Marilyn; and 28-year-old Jonah Hill, for Moneyball.

Things are less clear-cut in the race for best actor.

Hollywood heart-throbs George Clooney and Brad Pitt face a stiff challenge from The Artist’s Jean Dujardin, who beat them – and British star Gary Oldman – at the BAFTAs earlier this month.

It’s Oldman’s first Oscar nomination, which recognizes his quietly powerful performance as mole-catcher George Smiley in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.

The outsider in this category is Mexican actor Demian Bichir for his role as a Los Angeles gardener, struggling to keep his son out of gang culture, in A Better Life.

Earlier this week, an investigation by the Los Angeles Times revealed that the Academy demographic is much less diverse than the movie-going public.

Oscar voters, it said, are nearly 94% Caucasian and 77% male. They have a median age of 62, and under 50’s constitute just 14% of the membership. All of which, puts The Artist in pole position.

Mike Goodridge, editor of Screen International, said: “You’re looking at a group that are going to vote for The King’s Speech over The Social Network, for The Hurt Locker over Avatar, and this year it’s going to go for this portrait of days gone by.”

Whitney Houston open casket photo was not taken by Whigham Funeral Home, says the owner

Carolyn Whigham, the owner of the funeral home that handled Whitney Houston’s remains is said to be “devastated” that a photo showing the legendary singer’s body in an open casket was leaked to the National Enquirer.

It is believed the picture was taken inside the Whigham Funeral Home in Newark, New Jersey, where Whitney Houston’s family attended a private wake last Friday on the eve of her funeral.

Carolyn Whigham says neither she nor her staff is responsible.

“We did not take that photo. We did not sell the photo. We would never do something like that,” Carolyn Whigham told the New York Daily News.

Carolyn Whigham, who is a second-generation owner of the Whigham Funeral Home said she had a long-standing relationship with Whitney Houston.

“Whitney was a friend,” the business owner said.

“I’m the one who flew to Los Angeles and got Whitney from the coroner’s office. I did everything to protect her.”

The image shows the singer’s body resting inside her partially open casket.

The National Enquirer has run the snap alongside a bold headline proclaiming: “Whitney: The last photo!”

When the picture of Whitney Houston in open casket hit newstands, Carolyn Whigham said she received a number of distressing emails from irate Houston fans and she now fears for her staff’s safety.

“One email said that if the person owned a dog, and the dog died, they would not come to my funeral home,” Carolyn Whigham said.

“I’m worried about my employees, worried about me. I’ve been in business since 1943. This is my name, my character. Honestly, this is my life’s work. We would never do something like this.”

Whitney Houston’s mother Cissy and daughter Bobbi Kristina are said to be outraged about the photo.

“Their heart broken all over again” sources close to the family told TMZ.

One source said: “The family could tell from the photo that it was taken from inside the funeral home, but they have no idea who would have snapped the pic.”

Whitney Houston, 48, died in a hotel suite in Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles on 11 February.

A spokesman for the Los Angeles county coroner said multiple bottles of prescription medication were recovered from Whitney Houston’s room, but the official cause of her death has not been revealed.

The shocking National Enquirer cover photo shows Whitney Houston wearing a deep purple dress, a sparkling brooch and diamond earrings.

Carolyn Whigham disputed the tabloid’s claim that Whitney Houston was buried with $500,000 worth of precious stones.

“That’s crazy. It’s not true,” Carolyn Whigham told The Daily News.

Domnica Cemortan gave her first full interview since Costa Concordia cruise ship disaster

Domnica Cemortan, the Moldovan blonde tour rep who was accused of causing the sinking of the Costa Concordia by romantically distracting Captain Francesco Schettino has given her first full newspaper interview “to set the record straight”.

Domnica Cemortan, 25, had been dining and flirting with Captain Francesco Schettino, 52, before the disaster and was with him on the bridge when the ship struck rocks on January 13.

It was widely reported that Francesco Schettino, now known universally as Captain Coward, may have been trying to impress Domnica Cemortan when his ship sailed off course.

For the past six weeks the Moldovan young woman has been at the centre of worldwide attempts to uncover precisely what happened on the night that up to 32 people lost their lives off the Italian coastline.

Rumors about the nature of her relationship with Francesco Schettino have led to her being called a siren, a woman of loose morals, and everything in between.

Through it all Domnica Cemortan has repeatedly denied any romance between her and the married captain. Even after her luggage and bikinis were discovered in the captain’s submerged cabin, she insisted it was “all lies”.

Last week, after The Mail on Sunday tracked her down in her homeland, where she lives with her mother and 2-year-old daughter, Domnica Cemortan finally revealed her true feelings for the discredited Captain Francesco Schettino.

The Costa Concordia captain is currently under house arrest on suspicion of multiple manslaughter, abandoning ship and causing shipwreck. If convicted, Francesco Schattino faces 15 years in jail.

Domnica Cemortan admits that not only had she been alone with the captain in his cabin earlier during the evening of the tragedy, but that they had shared a passionate kiss, which she suspects was a prelude to them becoming lovers.

The Moldovan woman had previously worked on the ship for three weeks translating for Russian passengers and it was then that she got to know Francesco Schettino. When her contract ended the month before the tragedy, Domnica Cemortan returned as a paying passenger on the ill-fated cruise.

Domnica Cemortan says that although she had a serious “crush” on Francesco Schettino, she was never “in love” with him and their affair never really got started.

She admits that her luggage had been left in the captain’s cabin, but says it was only a temporary arrangement while she waited for a cabin to become available.

Domnica Cemortan has given her own eyewitness account of what happened on the bridge of the vessel in the minutes before it ran aground with more than 4,000 people on board.

Swathed in black fur against the biting cold and with her face devoid of make-up, Domnica Cemortan appears even more youthful than she actually is.

Domnica Cemortan says: “So much rubbish has been written about me that I think I must now defend my reputation. They are acting as if I’m some sort of femme fatale, but I don’t sleep around.

“Yes, I was very attracted to Captain Schettino and he was clearly interested in me. I admit that I had a big crush on him because he was very good-looking and very charming.”

She adds: “He once told me that I had both beauty and brains. What woman would not want to hear such words – especially when there were many women much more beautiful than me on board the ship? I knew he liked me and I was very flattered by his attention.

“When I worked on the ship he had made it clear that he thought me special. I’m a woman and I know these things. I could tell by the way he laughed at my jokes and how he looked at me; there was always a twinkle in his eyes when we spoke.

“I admit that I was attracted to him, but honestly, we did not have sex.

“He was always respectful when I was a member of his staff, but once I was a passenger then it was different. I think we probably would have ended up in bed, eventually, but I never found out because of the crash.

“Of course, I’m very sorry that so many people died or were hurt that night. It was a tragic accident and people are looking to find someone to blame. Maybe there was human error, maybe the captain was in some way responsible; I don’t know. For me, it was more a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

This is the second time that an ocean tragedy has wrecked Domnica Cemortan’s life. She was only eight when her father drowned while swimming in the Black Sea during a family holiday in Ukraine. A relative has suggested that Francesco Schettino’s resemblance to her late father may have been part of his attraction.

Domnica Cemortan grew up with her older brother and their mother Vera, a doctor, in Chisinau, the capital of Moldova. She trained as a dancer, winning scholarships to study first in Romania and then France, where she lived from 2006 to 2009. She stopped performing because of injuries.

Domnica Cemortan’s daughter, the result of a long-term relationship with a fellow Moldovan, was born in Paris in January 2010.

By the end of 2010, Domnica Cemortan and her daughter were living back in her home country.

“I was a single mother and I decided it was best to get back out to work,” she says.

“A friend who worked for the cruise company saw a vacancy and told me about it.

“I speak four languages, so I applied and got the job as an international hostess for Russian passengers on the Costa Magica cruise ship, sailing around the Mediterranean.”

Domnica Cemortan’s initial contract was for October to December 2011. Then on December 6 she was asked to cover for a colleague on the Costa Concordia, the Costa Magica’s sister ship. Although she says the Costa Concordia’s dashing captain barely noticed her at first, it is clear from a photograph taken of them in a restaurant on the Cote d’Azur on December 13, which was published in Italian magazine Chi, that she was already smitten.

Although Domnica Cemortan says Francesco Schettino barely noticed her at first, it is clear from a photograph taken of them in a restaurant on the Cote d’Azur on December 13, which was published in Italian magazine Chi, that she was already smitten
Although Domnica Cemortan says Francesco Schettino barely noticed her at first, it is clear from a photograph taken of them in a restaurant on the Cote d’Azur on December 13, which was published in Italian magazine Chi, that she was already smitten

The woman says: “Once or twice he bought me a drink in the ship’s bar, but it was always in a group situation. It was the same when we went for a seafood dinner at Villefranche-sur-Mer on the Cote d’Azur in December. There was a big party of us and I was not the only one who had a photo taken with him.”

Domnica Cemortan has admitted that by her second week on the ship, colleagues were teasing her about the “spark” they noticed between her and the captain but she denies that they ever “crossed the line”.

Domnica Cemortan says: “He offered me a drink one night when I was in one of the lounges with a friend and on at least another occasion. But the only time we were alone on that trip was once in his office, when I went to give him a report. He told me that I was not only beautiful, but smart as well. It was a nice feeling, but neither of us did anything wrong.”

It is difficult to believe that a man of the world such as Francesco Schettino, who some former colleagues claim has an eye for the ladies, would not have acted on his attraction. It’s also hard to believe Domnica Cemortan’s claim that he knew nothing about her decision to buy a ticket for a cruise on the ship, after her three weeks’ work ended.

Domnica Cemortan was given a 50% discount, even though she had not officially been with the company long enough to qualify for the staff’s cheap rates, and boarded the ship at 5:00 p.m. on the day of the tragedy in the Italian port of Civitavecchia.

She says: “I don’t think he knew I was coming back because I didn’t tell anyone except the entertainment director, who was my immediate boss. Because of the discount I was able to find out which cabin I had only once we had set sail. So the first thing I did was call my boss, who said that he was in the captain’s office and I should come up.

“When I arrived, the captain looked surprised to see me. My boss said I still had to wait for a cabin and the captain said that I could leave my luggage in his cabin. I then went to see my friends on board. When I called my boss later, he suggested I should go to the restaurant at 9:00 p.m. to get a cabin key.”

During the interview Domnica Cemortan produced the card key for the cabin she had been allocated.

She initially denies a passenger’s account that she was dining with Francesco Schettino in the last hours before the crash.

“How does this person know it was me? They have some grainy picture of a woman, but it could have been anyone,” she says.

Then Domnica Cemortan offers a sanitized version of being with Francesco Schettino in his cabin before dinner.

“After saying hello to my friends on the ship I returned to change for dinner at about 8:00 p.m. – that was the practice when I was a part of the crew. The captain was there but he politely left me to change.

“He came back in as I was leaving and said that I looked stunning. He took my hand and kissed it.”

Domnica Cemortan coyly admits that he had grasped her in a passionate embrace and, to her surprise, kissed her hard on the mouth. But she insists the intimacy stopped there.

“I didn’t want people to know this because they might get the wrong idea,” Domnica Cemortan explains, then refuses to say any more about the incident.

As for dining with the captain, she says she joined Francesco Schettino and her (male) boss only for dessert and coffee.

Domnica Cemortan says: “Afterwards, the captain invited me to the bridge, to <<see a beautiful panorama of the island>> and we left the restaurant at about 9:30 p.m.” The island was Giglio, off the Tuscan coast, and tragedy was about to unfold.

It is clear that Francesco Schettino was enthralled by the vivacious young woman and she was equally smitten. Did the excitement affect his judgment? Domnica Cemortan says it did not. She watched the drama from a corner of the bridge.

“I was there for about ten minutes. I could see the lights of the island; I thought it was normal to go so close. The captain issued orders to about a dozen officers on the glass-fronted deck. They were speaking in Italian and marine terms, so I didn’t really understand.

“The crash happened about 15 seconds afterwards. It was all very sudden. There was no bang.

“We didn’t feel the collision because we were at the front and it happened at the back. But the sirens came on and warning lights were flashing on the console and alarms blaring.

“It seemed as if they were in control, but there was a bit of rushing about and shouting. Other hostesses arrived on the bridge to make announcements in the different languages. It was a full-scale emergency, but we had all been well trained in preparation for such a disaster.”

Domnica Cemortan had been dining and flirting with Captain Francesco Schettino before the Costa Concordia disaster and was with him on the bridge when the ship struck rocks on January 13
Domnica Cemortan had been dining and flirting with Captain Francesco Schettino before the Costa Concordia disaster and was with him on the bridge when the ship struck rocks on January 13

No one could have expected the huge vessel to sink, in relatively shallow waters, off the island within hours of leaving port.

To compound matters, Francesco Schettino delayed ordering an evacuation of the 4,200 passengers and crew for about an hour. The death toll stands at 25, with seven people still unaccounted for.

Domnica Cemortan has defended Francesco Schettino from the outset and continues to do so. She argues that it would have taken time to ascertain the damage, which is why she didn’t make a dash for the lifeboats.

“The ship very quickly turned 60 degrees on its side and the sirens indicated that it was leaking, so I knew that I needed warm clothes,” Domnica Cemortan says.

The woman went into the captain’s cabin to change back into trousers, a jumper and jacket, grabbing her handbag along the way.

“When I returned to the bridge I saw the captain looking very much in control. I watched as the boat listed to one side. He asked me to stay because I speak four languages, while colleagues were told to get to their muster stations.

“At the end I saw the captain there with just two officers. He was co-ordinating the evacuation. Then he saw me and said I should go to deck three where people were getting into lifeboats. He said, <<Save yourself>>. I thought he looked very calm so it made me feel confident that it would be OK. I checked my watch and it was about 11:50 p.m. when I left him on the bridge.

“People say he’s a coward and that he didn’t act to save people, but it’s not true. He steered the ship into shallow water and made it easier for people to either swim or be rescued. I think he saved a lot of lives that night and was very courageous.”

Domnica Cemortan made her way gingerly down five decks on the listing vessel, in virtual darkness.

“If I didn’t know the ship I might never have made it.

“It was cold and I could hear things falling and people shouting. It was terrible. I think that some passengers got confused and maybe forgot where to go in an emergency.”

She waited about 15 minutes for a place in a lifeboat.

The next time Domnica Cemortan saw Francesco Schettino was about 5:00 a.m., on land.

“He looked absolutely shattered,” the woman says.

“Of course I felt sorry for him. He was always kind to me and I think he’s a good person.”

Domnica Cemortan and Francesco Schettino have not been in contact since the accident, though their names are now intrinsically entwined in a naval disaster that may have been the result of their attraction for each other, but she still seems to harbor deep affection for the captain.

“I would dearly love to speak with him again,” Domnica Cemortan says with a wistful smile.

“I want to know what went wrong and how he’s coping.

“It’s not that I miss him, but he was a nice man and I think they are making him into a kind of monster.

“Everyone is blaming him for what happened, but I don’t think he did anything wrong. It was just a terrible accident.”

Blue Ivy Carter stepped out publicly for the first time with her parents Beyoncé and Jay-Z

Blue Ivy Carter, Beyoncé’s newborn, has been seen in public for the first time during a lunch outing today in New York.

Blue Ivy was wrapped in a black baby blanket, with what appeared to be a black scarf covering her face and Beyoncé made sure to protectively wrap her arms around the infant.

Beyoncé, 30, dressed casually in black leather trousers, sunglasses and boots. She wore a black cap on her head to keep warm.

The singer was accompanied by husband Jay-Z and a team of bodyguards who kept close watch over the family as they emerged from Sant Ambroeus cafe and espresso bar in the West Village.

Eyewitnesses say the new mother wasn’t feeling well and the family left after only 30 minutes.

Beyoncé and Jay-Z surprised fans earlier this month by sharing the first pictures of their daughter Blue Ivy on the internet.

The proud parents posted a series of intimate portraits of their beloved daughter, who was born just over a month ago.

Instead of selling their first baby pictures to a glossy magazine for millions of dollars, the music megastar couple decided to take control posting snaps of Blue Ivy to a tumblr blog.

World’s first quadruple limb transplant performed in Ankara hospital

Surgeons at Hacettepe University Hospital in Ankara, Turkey, have today performed the world’s first ever quadruple limb transplant, attaching two arms and two legs to a young man.

The operation took 20 hours to complete and required 50 doctors to help attach the limbs.

Head physician Dr. Murat Tuncer today appealed for blood donations to overcome possible complications following the surgery.

Dr. Murat Tuncer did not provide any details about the patient.

The operation comes after a failed triple limb transplant two months ago at another hospital in the southern city of Antalya.

The doctors there were forced to remove a leg from a patient due to tissue incompatibility. The same patient also received two arms.

Dr. Murat Tuncer says his team also performed a separate face transplant on another patient yesterday – the second in Turkey this year.

The first in the country was performed on Turkish teenager Ugur Acar, who lost 70% of his face when he was just two-years-old in a TV tube explosion, at Akdeniz University’s School of Medicine in Antalya.

Doctors successfully transplanted tissue from the face of a 45-year-old donor to 19-year-old Ugur Acar in January but doctors have said he will not be able to make facial expressions for another six months.

Connie Culp, from America, was the first ever successful recipient of a face transplant, performed at the Cleveland Clinic in December 2008.

She was shot in the face by her husband Thomas Culp in a failed murder-suicide in September 2004 outside a bar in Hopedale, Ohio.

Men who lost their wives to cancer cope better mentally if they meet a new partner within 5 years

A new study shows that grieving men who have lost their wives to cancer cope better mentally if they meet a new partner within 5 years.

Researchers found that those men who are single four or five years after the death are at a far greater risk of mental illness.

Previous work has shown that the relatives of cancer victims are at greater risk of dying themselves or developing mental or physical illness.

However, these studies have largely focused on widows and the short term risks, say researchers from Sweden’s University of Gothenburg.

They looked at long term data from 691 widowers and found that those who had met a new partner within 5 years had dealt with the loss relatively well.

Those who remained single were at far greater risk of developing depression, anxiety, sleep disorders and emotional blunting, and were also more likely to use sleeping pills and antidepressants.

Prof. Gunnar Steineck said: “Previous studies have shown that people who lose their partner are at greater short-term poor mental health.

“Our study is the first to show that the risk of poor mental health last for many years but, on the average, the risk is restricted to those who don’t find a new partner.

“We need more research to understand the underlying mechanisms, but emotional support from a new partner does probably help to process grief and protect against mental illness.

“But it could also be the case that those men who cope best with their loss are more likely to show an interest in finding a new partner.”

Rocklin, California, is set to ban smoking outside, including residents’ own properties

The town of Rocklin in California is proposing to ban smoking outside, even for residents lighting up on their own property.

Smoking is already banned indoors in public places in most of the country, and in California it is illegal to smoke in parks and playgrounds too.

The town of Rocklin, near Sacramento, could take the draconian regulations further by extending them to private property as well.

The unusual legislation was prompted by a local family annoyed with their neighbor smoking outside and causing smoke to waft near their house.

The family claimed their children’s health had been jeopardized by second-hand smoke, according to CBS 13.

However, while cigarettes may be considered a dirty habit, some people say that a ban could interfere with constitutional property rights.

And other worry that the proposal could actually cause health problems, with smokers forced to light up within the confines of their home – particularly damaging for those with young children.

But supporters of the plan say a blanket ban is the only way to keep cigarette smoke away from non-smokers.

Rocklin resident Ryan Malonson said he doubted the measure would pass, describing the proposal as “unacceptable”.

However, Rocklin officials insist they are actively considering the idea of a ban.

While smoking used to be universally common and socially acceptable throughout the U.S., it has become increasingly controversial over the years.

There are now very few public places where it is legal to smoke, and to crack down on lighting up on private property would be extremely restricting.

Lindsay Lohan with blotchy orange skin and too much blush at Terry Richardson’s art exhibition

Lindsay Lohan, who is a former tanning product endorser, stepped out with blotchy orange skin as she attended the opening of Terry Richardson’s art exhibition Terrywood in Los Angeles last night.

The patchy tan clashed with the Lindsay Lohan’s fluorescent yellow party dress, which featured a light bolt pattern.

It appeared that Lindsay Lohan’s fake tan had been on for several nights and either required another application or perhaps a slight exfoliation.

She also appeared to have overdone it on the blush, her cheeks sporting a heavy application of bronzer.

Lindsay Lohan, 25, continues to keep tongues wagging and people guessing about her increasingly puffed up face.

Lilo’s lips and face first appeared plumper when she arrived at the Domingo Zapata exhibition in Beverly Hills on Wednesday night.

Lindsay Lohan’s puffy face first came under speculation at Kim Kardashian’s wedding in August, and at the time, The New York Post spoke to two plastic surgeons who confirmed she had all the signs of fillers.

They both said it appeared she had lip and cheek injections only days before the wedding.

“Her face has been plumped beyond all recognition,” Dr. Anthony Youn told the Post.

“Lindsay, who’s 25, looks like a 50-year-old <<Real Housewife>> trying to look 20.”

Dr. Anthony Youn said her injectable of choice was like Restalyne, which could have resulted in a look Lindsay Lohan has become famous for, the oft-seen trout pout.

“Lindsay’s a very pretty gal,” Dr. Anthony Youn added.

“When young people get these types of treatments, there’s got to be a concern.”

Another doctor, Toby Mayer, lamented Lindsay Lohan’s reported decision to alter her face at such a young age.

“Women in their 20’s don’t need filler,” he said.

Lindsay Lohan arrived late last night a Richardson’s exhibition and was accompanied by her mother Dina and her younger sister Ali.

Silvio Berlusconi’s bribery case thrown out as expired

Italian judges have thrown out a bribery case against former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, because it expired under the statute of limitations.

Silvio Berlusconi was accused of paying his former British tax lawyer, David Mills, to lie in court to protect his interests.

The case dates back to the 1990’s.

Silvio Berlusconi, who denies wrongdoing, says this and other court cases against him are all part of a politically-motivated smear campaign.

Italian judges have thrown out a bribery case against former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, because it expired under the statute of limitations

He is on trial separately on charges of tax fraud and sex with an under-age prostitute.

The prosecution alleged David Mills was given $600,000 to lie in court about Silvio Berlusconi’s business interests.

David Mills, who was not on trial, denies that any such payment was made.

In December David Mills told a court he was “deeply ashamed” for falsely claiming that Silvio Berlusconi had given him $600,000.

David Mills said the money had actually come from an associate he had not wanted to admit dealing with.

Of the other three cases Silvio Berlusconi still faces, potentially the most damaging for the former Italian leader involves Moroccan nightclub dancer Karima El Mahroug, also known as Ruby.

Prosecutors allege Karima El Mahroug attended several parties at Silvio Berlusconi’s residence last year and was paid for sex while she was still 17, an offence according to Italian law. Both she and the prime minister deny having sex. She says she did receive 7,000 Euros, but it was as a gift after a party.

Osama Bin Laden compound in Abbottabad is being demolished

Osama Bin Laden’s compound in the Pakistani city of Abbottabad, where US forces killed him, is being demolished, residents and police say.

Osama Bin Laden was shot dead at the compound in the north-western city near the capital Islamabad in May 2011.

Security forces brought in bulldozers and began destroying the tall outer walls of the compound after sunset, reports say.

They set up floodlights to carry out the work.

In May 2011, a team of US Special Forces flew from Afghanistan to Osama Bin Laden’s hiding place during the night in stealth helicopters.

They swept through the buildings within the high-walled enclosure and shot dead a total of five people, including Osama Bin Laden.

Some 40 minutes later, they left, taking with them Osama Bin Laden’s body and a hoard of computer data devices and other information containing intelligence about al-Qaeda and Bin Laden’s activities.

The compound has been a painful reminder for Pakistan, which was embarrassed by the unilateral US operation that killed Osama Bin Laden.

Whitney Houston open casket photo is a work of art, says National Enquirer

There were worldwide reactions of disgust to the National Enquirer’s decision to publish a photo of Whitney Houston’s body in an open casket on its front page this week, but the magazine has stood by its decision.

Publisher Mary Beth Wright refused to name her source, but called the picture a “work of art”.

Speaking to Fox News, Mary Beth Wright said: “I thought it was beautiful”.

The decision to run the snap has been slammed by media outlets, fans of the star, and social media users around the world.

The executive editor of HollywoodLife also told Fox: “It’s just another disgusting display of how low celebrity obsession can stoop. Regardless of how they obtained the picture – and the likely exorbitant price they paid for it, the Enquirer should have thought twice about this post-mortem portrait.”

Also among those condemning the magazine has been funeral director Carolyn Whigham, of the Whigham Funeral Home. She has strongly denied leaking the picture, telling the LA Times: “We have no comment. But it was not the funeral home… Whitney was a personal friend to me and my family.

“We would not do that… I am very angry, very upset, just like the family, just like the fans.”

There’s some precedent for the National Enquirer’s ghoulish glimpse at Whitney Houston’s wake. The tabloid ran similar open casket shots of Elvis Presley after the King of Rock died in 1977.

Just as it did with Elvis Presley, the headline loudly proclaims that it is “the last photo” taken of Whitney Houston.

The National Enquirer also teases some other tawdry details about the Whitney Houston viewing.

Whitney Houston was reportedly outfitted in her favorite purple dress, $500,000 worth of jewelry, and had gold slippers on her feet.

Whitney Houston tried to slit her wrists two days before her death, claimed Star

US tabloid Star has alleged that Whitney Houston tried to take her own life just two days before being found dead in Beverly Hilton hotel room in LA.

The publication, Star, is the sister magazine of the National Enquirer, which controversially printed a photograph of dead Whitney Houston in her coffin on its front cover.

It is alleged that Whitney Houston “tried to slit her wrists in the bathroom of LA’s Tru Hollywood nightclub on February 9”, following her row with X Factor star Stacy Francis.

A source is quoted as saying: “There was blood all over her, from her hands, wrists and legs, and there was a blade in her hand.”

It is further suggested that the so-called suicide attempt was intended as “ultimate revenge” on Clive Davis, who was apparently planning to cut her off financially.

The report has been flatly denied by a member of Whitney Houston’s entourage, who tells Gossip Cop that the whole thing is “definitely not true”.

Swisscode Hyaluron super-serum has sold out 48 h after its launch in UK

Swisscode Hyaluron, the so-called “super serum”, an alternative to minor cosmetic procedures and expensive facials, has sold out in the UK within just 48 hours of its launch.

The launch of Hyaluron, from beauty firm Swisscode, surpassed expectations thanks to claims that it can reverse the signs of ageing by up to five years.

Pre-order sales of the £45 ($71) Hyaluron serum topped 10,000, and beauty experts have predicted it to the biggest beauty launch of 2012.

Swisscode Hyaluron certainly helps that it has already proved a hit with the A-list. Jennifer Aniston and Courtney Cox are believed to be fans, while Emma Thompson and Helen Mirren are said to be using the serum ahead of the Oscars.

Make-up artist Lou Page, who will be heading teams at the Oscars this weekend, revealed: “Swisscode Hyaluron instantly plumps the skin and leaves an admired dewy complexion – it is the staple of my kit.

“I like to use it as a primer and serum before applying foundation – my celebrity clients dub it the <<super serum>> for its impressive instant results.”

The Hyaluron serum delivers the benefits of dermal fillers, the makers say, though without that too-plumped, frozen look that excessive Botox use can sometimes cause.

The active ingredient is hyaluronic acid, and the product is said to offer the component in its purest form.

A spokesman for the brand said: “Hylauron rebalances the proportion of mediators; these are very important for the regulation of the immune system.

“The skin maintains its young, fresh appearance with the serum penetrating into deepest layers of the skin forming an invisible film on the surface so hydrating and targeting the topical layers of stratum corneum and reducing environmental damage.”

Nick Gordon, Whitney Houston’ secret “son”, is to inherit a share of late singer’s fortune

Nick Gordon, Whitney Houston’s secret “son” is to inherit a share of $30 million fortune from the late singer, family sources said last night.

Whitney Houston took Nick Gordon, 22, into her home in Atlanta, Georgia, as a youngster to save him from his own troubled background.

Although Nick Gordon was never formally adopted, he would call Whitney Houston “Mum” and the singer was treating him like her own.

Nick Gordon also became a “brother” to the singer’s 18-year-old daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown and featured in touching family photos.

Although Whitney Houston struggled for cash later in life as she battled debt and drug problems, the late singer is still believed to have left an estate of around $30 million which has been boosted by increased record sales following her death.

Now Nick Gordon is set to get a share.

A family insider in Atlanta said: “Nick was family, she loved him as much as any mother could love a child.”

Even if Whitney Houston did not make legal arrangements for her “son” to inherit part of her fortune, the source is convinced that her daughter will make sure he is cared for.

“If he is not written into her will and everything goes to Bobbi then it will only be because it was written before she took Nick into her family,” the insider said.

“If that’s the case, Bobbi will make sure Nick is taken care of because it’s what her mum would have wanted and he’s like a brother.”

But Nick Gordon has had his problems too. In 2011 he was charged with gun possession in Roswell, Georgia, after a night out with his sister.

The 22 year-old was accused of trying to stop a fight between Bobbi Kristina and her ex-boyfriend by pulling the gun.

The same night Bobbi Kristina was arrested for possession of alcohol while a minor.

But Whitney Houston stood by Nick Gordon.

The source added: “Whitney wanted to save Nick – even if she couldn’t save herself.”

Whitney Houston was found in her hotel bathtub on the eve of the Grammy Awards earlier this month after taking a cocktail of prescription pills.

Afterwards Nick Gordon tweeted: “Rest in peace. Thank you for all your support.

“The legend will always and forever live on.”

Nick Gordon became an older brother to Bobbi Kristina and is said to have been comforting the youngster since Whitney Houston was found dead two weeks ago.

Issues over inheritance are the last thing on the mind of Whitney Houston’s family who are still reeling from the shock death of the singer.

Bobbi Kristina Brown, the singer’s 18-year-old daughter, is said to be devastated and lost following the star’s death and the family fear it may push her over the edge.

Secret bible-book unearthed in Turkey – some believe it is a fake and only dates back to the 16th century.

A secret handwritten book found in Turkey, in which Jesus is said to predict the coming of the Prophet Muhammad to Earth, has sparked serious interest from the Vatican.

Pope Benedict XVI is claimed to want to see the 1,500-year-old book, which many say is the Gospel of St. Barnabas that has been hidden by the Turkish state for the last 12 years.

The $22 million handwritten gold lettered tome, penned in Jesus’ native Aramaic language, is said to contain his early teachings and a prediction of the Prophet’s coming.

The leather-bound text, written on animal hide, was discovered by Turkish police during an anti-smuggling operation in 2000.

It was closely guarded until 2010, when it was finally handed over to the Ankara Ethnography Museum, and will soon be put back on public display following a minor restoration.

The secret Bible found in Turkey, in which Jesus is believed to predict the coming of the Prophet Muhammad to Earth, has sparked serious interest from the Vatican

A photocopy of a single page from the handwritten ancient manuscript is thought to be worth $2.3 million.

Turkish culture and tourism minister Ertugrul Gunay said the book could be an authentic version of the Gospel, which was suppressed by the Christian Church for its strong parallels with the Islamic view of Jesus.

Ertugrul Gunay also said the Vatican had made an official request to see the scripture, a controversial text which Muslims claim is an addition to the original gospels of Mark, Matthew, Luke and John.

In line with Islamic belief, the Gospel treats Jesus as a human being and not a God.

It rejects the ideas of the Holy Trinity and the Crucifixion and reveals that Jesus predicted the coming of the Prophet Muhammad.

In one version of the gospel, He is said to have told a priest: “How shall the Messiah be called? Muhammad is his blessed name.”

And in another Jesus denied being the Messiah, claiming that he or she would be Ishmaelite, the term used for an Arab.

Despite the interest in the newly re-discovered book, some believe it is a fake and only dates back to the 16th century.

The oldest copies of the book date back to that time, and are written in Spanish and Italian.

Protestant pastor İhsan Özbek said it was unlikely to be authentic.

This is because St. Barnabas lived in the first century and was one of the Apostles of Jesus, in contrast to this version which is said to come from the 5th or 6th century.

İhsan Özbek told the Zaman newspaper: “The copy in Ankara might have been written by one of the followers of St. Barnabas.

“Since there is around 500 years in between St. Barnabas and the writing of the Bible copy, Muslims may be disappointed to see that this copy does not include things they would like to see.

“It might have no relation with the content of the Gospel of Barnabas.”

Theology professor Ömer Faruk Harman said a scientific scan of the bible may be the only way to reveal how old it really is.

Who was St. Barnabas?

Born in Cyprus as Joseph, Barnabas was an Early Christian later named an apostle.

His story appears in the Acts of the Apostles, and Paul mentions him in some of his epistles.

The date, place, and circumstances of his death are historically unverifiable.

But Christian tradition states that he was martyred at Salamis, Cyprus.

He is traditionally identified as the founder of the Cypriot Church, with his feast day on June 11.

Breakthrough heroine vaccine to be tested on humans in Mexico

A group of Mexican researchers is working on a vaccine that could reduce addiction to one of the world’s most notorious narcotics: heroin.

If all goes as planned in an upcoming human trial of a potential heroin vaccine, a new weapon may soon be available to combat heroin addiction in drug users.

Researchers at the country’s National Institute of Psychiatry say they have successfully tested the vaccine on mice and are preparing to test it on humans to see if it exhibits the same beneficial effects.

The vaccine, which has been patented both in Mexico and in the United States, works by making the body resistant to the effects of heroin, so users would no longer get a rush of pleasure when they smoke or inject it, rendering the narcotic effectively useless.

“It would be a vaccine for people who are serious addicts, who have not had success with other treatments and decide to use this application to get away from drugs,” the institute’s director Maria Elena Medina said in Mexico City on Thursday.

The Scripps Research Institute in California, which has also seen success of its heroin vaccine in lab rats, is currently conducting human clinical trials for cocaine and nicotine vaccines, but not heroin.

The Mexican researchers will be the first to test a heroin vaccine in humans. The scientists are hopeful a breakthrough is on the horizon, as their vaccine appears promising.

Health Secretary Salomon Chertorivski earlier projected that the vaccine will not be ready for human use for five years. However, that estimate may be a conservative one now that country is set to begin human trials.

Scientists worldwide have been searching for drug addiction vaccines for several years, but none have yet been fully developed and released on the market. One group at the US National Institute on Drug Abuse has reported significant progress in a vaccine for cocaine.

However, the Mexican scientists appear to be close to making a breakthrough on a heroin vaccine.

During the tests, mice were given access to deposits of heroin over an extended period of time. Those given the vaccine showed a huge drop in heroin consumption, giving the institute hope that it could also work on people, Maria Elena Medina said.

Mexico, a major producer and transit country for drugs smuggled into the US, has a growing drug addiction problem and grapples with relentless drug-related violence. Health Secretary Jose Cordoba recently said the country has some 450,000 hard drug addicts.

Two-headed tortoise with a heart-shaped shell exhibited at Science History Museum in Kiev

A two-headed tortoise with two hearts and six legs has gone on show on Friday at the exhibition called Live Dragons at a natural science museum in Kiev, Ukraine.

The 5-year-old Central Asian steppe turtle with two heads and six paws is displayed as part of the exhibition at the Science History Museum in Kiev. The Ukrainian-born reptile, on display at the museum, has a heart-shaped shell about a dozen centimetres (4.7 inches) in width.

Visitors will be able to observe the different eating habits of each head over the next two months.

The organizer of the project Dmitry Tkachev said: “This turtle is a mutation.”

According to Dmitry Tkachev, the tortoise was born to a breeder of the animals in Ukraine, “in the wild, animals with such mutations rarely survive.”

Dmitry Tkachev went on to explain that the heads of the unusual turtle can’t see each other, “each has its own character, so they often want to crawl in different directions.”

“Strictly speaking it isn’t a tortoise with two heads, but rather two conjoined tortoises,” Yuri Yuravliov, a zoologist, told AFP.

“The female has two heads, two hearts, four front legs, but only two hind ones, and one intestine,” Yuri Yuravliov explained.

The two heads are quite different, even in their feeding habits.

The left one is more dominant and active, “prefers green food, while the other prefers more brightly-colored food – carrots and dandelion flowers,” said Yuri Yuravliov.

The tortoise, a species that can live 50 to 60 years, was kept from birth by a Ukrainian in his home, he said.

“Animals with this type of pathology are only rarely born and don’t survive in natural condition.”

Sergei Ryabov, head of the center that studies reptiles, said that each of the heads of this unusual reptile had its own favorite food.

“One eats everything but prefers green leaves, if you offer it a choice it will eat only green, but this one does not eat leaves at all and eats only red or colorful things, like peppers or carrots,” Sergei Ryabov said.

The two-headed turtle can be seen in the natural history museum of Kiev until April 20.

Duke of Palma Inaki Urdangarin in court over corruption

Inaki Urdangarin, the Duke of Palma and the Spain’s King Juan Carlos’ son in law, has arrived at court in Mallorca to face a corruption probe.

Inaki Urdangarin is being investigated over claims he misused public funds given to a foundation he ran.

The duke has denied any wrongdoing in the case, which has been a rare embarrassment for the popular Spanish royal family.

“I come to clarify the truth and defend my honor,” the Duke of Palma said as he arrived.

“I have carried out my responsibilities and taken decisions in the right way and with complete transparency,” he said, according to Spain’s El Pais newspaper.

Scores of anti-monarchy protesters demonstrated noisily nearby as the duke arrived.

Some waved signs reading “Inaki owes us money” and “Monarchy Corruption”, the AFP news agency reports.

Inaki Urdangarin, who has not been formally charged, was suspended from official royal engagements in December last year.

Exact details of the accusations against the Duke of Palma have not been made public but he is reportedly accused of misdirecting part of some 6 million Euros ($8 million) sent to his not-for-profit Noos Institute by regional governments to organize sporting events.

It is alleged that some of the money ended up in companies that the Duke of Palma ran.

The events in question happened between 2004 and 2006, when the duke stepped down as head of the institute.

Inaki Urdangarin, a former Olympic handball player, is married to King Juan Carlos’ second child, Princess Cristina.

On Thursday the duke’s family released a statement defending his innocence and attacking what they called a “campaign of harassment” against him, AFP reports.

In response to the scandal, the Spanish royal family announced in December that it will make its accounts publicly available.

Nelson Mandela rushed to hospital with abdominal complaint

Nelson Mandela, the South Africa’s first black president, has been rushed to hospital with abdominal complaint.

According to officials, Nelson Mandela was suffering from a “long-standing abdominal complaint” which doctors felt needed “proper specialist medical attention”.

A spokesman for current President Jacob Zuma said Nelson Mandela, affectionately known as Madiba, was “in good spirits and well”.

The 93-year-old statesman and anti-apartheid icon has suffered declining health in recent years.

President Jacob Zuma’s office said the “love and good wishes of all South Africans and people throughout the world” were with him.

In a statement, Jacob Zuma asked for Nelson Mandela and his family to be given privacy.

The statement did not say which hospital he had been admitted to but there are suggestions it was a military hospital in the capital, Pretoria.

Nelson Mandela returned to Johannesburg last month from his rural home in the Eastern Cape and in January last year, he received treatment in the city’s Milpark hospital for a serious chest infection.

“I can assure you that the former president is in good spirits and well,” said presidential spokesman Mac Maharaj.

He said further information would be released once President Jacob Zuma and the Mandela family had received a full medical report from doctors, but that the 93-year-old’s life was not in danger.

“This was a long-standing complaint – nothing that cropped up suddenly and needed emergency attention,” said Mac Maharaj.

“But it is an issue that the doctors treating him felt needed specialist attention, and so arrangements were made accordingly.”

Mac Maharaj would not confirm reports that Nelson Mandela had undergone surgery for a hernia overnight, and appealed for “co-operation from the public and the media so we manage this thing properly”.

The South African government is clearly keen to control the flow of information, after previous alerts about the former leader’s health have been the subject of much speculation.

Nelson Mandela retired from public life eight years ago – his last public appearance was at the World Cup in South Africa in 2010.

The Nobel Peace Prize winner is affectionately known in South Africa as Madiba.

Nelson Mandela spent 27 years in prison for his actions against the apartheid regime before being released in 1990.

In 1994, Nelson Mandela became South Africa’s first black president, stepping down in 1999 after one term.
