Volkswagen has agreed a deal to buy the remaining 50.1% stake in Porsche it doesn’t already own by the start of next month.
VW will pay 4.46 billion Euros ($5.6 billion) plus one VW common share to acquire the stake.
Volkswagen and Porsche had agreed in 2009 to merge by the end of 2011, but have since faced legal obstacles.
The deal is likely to reduce costs and boost VW’s earnings as it seeks to become the world’s biggest carmaker.

“The accelerated integration will allow us to start implementing a joint strategy for Porsche’s automotive business more quickly and to realize key joint projects more rapidly,” said Hans Dieter Poetsch, chief financial officer of Volkswagen.
Both the firms had been seeking to accelerate the merger. However, one of the stumbling blocks for the deal was the likelihood of a big tax bill for both the firms.
Volkswagen had acquired a 49.9% stake in Porsche in 2009.
According to various reports, if it bought the remaining stake before 2014, the two companies may have had to pay more than 1 billion Euros in taxes, making the move less attractive.
Analysts said that by structuring the deal as one which involved the payment of one VW common share to Porsche, the firms may be able to avoid that bill.
They said that such a move means that the deal may see it being classified as a restructuring of the company rather than a takeover.
“It’s a great deal for Volkswagen, both financially and in operative terms,” said David Arnold, an analyst with Credit Suisse.
Meanwhile, Volkswagen said in a statement that “the accelerated integration model that has now been agreed can be implemented on economically feasible terms”.
Once completed, the deal will bring an end to one of the most dramatic takeovers in the car manufacturing industry.
Porsche had been trying to takeover Volkswagen for many years.
Its attempt failed in 2009 as it fell short of acquiring the required 75% stake.
The global financial crisis and the slump in the global automotive sector made it difficult for the carmaker to raise enough money to buy the required stake.
But none the less, Porsche accumulated large amounts of debt in the process and was sued by investors who accused it of misleading them.
In a turnaround of events, the firms agreed a deal in 2009 under which Volkswagen agreed to takeover Porsche.
French authorities have placed the former head of France Telecom Didier Lombard under formal investigation for harassment.
The probe relates to the suicides of over 30 employees in 2008 and 2009 when Didier Lombard was in charge.
The launching of a formal investigation is the last stage before charges are brought in the French legal system.
Didier Lombard wrote in Le Monde that restructuring at the company may have upset employees, but challenged the idea it caused the suicides.

Smoking is known to reduce the chances of having a child. As eggs fertilized through IVF initially develop in the laboratory before being implanted, it gave doctors a unique opportunity to film the embryos as they divide into more and more cells.
Researchers watched 868 embryos develop – 139 from smokers.
In the clinic the embryos of non-smokers reached the five-cell stage after 49 hours. In the smokers it took 50 hours. The eight-cell stage took 62 hours in smokers’ embryos, while non-smokers’ embryos reached that point after 58 hours.
Senior embryologist and lead researcher, Dr. Thomas Freour, said: “Embryos from smoking women, they behave slower, there is a delay in their development.
“On average it is about two hours, it is significant and nobody knew that before.”
This study cannot say what impact the slower development has, or if this affected the chances of having a child.
Dr. Thomas Freour speculated that “if they go slower, maybe something is starting to go wrong and they wouldn’t implant.”
His advice was simple: “You should quit smoking, it couldn’t be easier. What else can I say? You want a baby, quit smoking.”
The findings were presented at the European Society for Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE) meeting in Turkey.

Presumptive GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney has spent most of the week off the campaign trail with his family in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, but took time Wednesday to march in the town’s Fourth of July parade.

The European Parliament has voted yesterday to reject the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA).
The proposed agreement sought to curb piracy, but internet campaigners said it posed a threat to online freedoms.
The rejection vote followed a failed attempt to postpone the decision because of ongoing investigations into ACTA by the European Court of Justice.
Euro MP David Martin said: “It’s time to give [ACTA] its last rites.”
Twenty-two EU member states had signed the ACTA treaty – but it had not been formally ratified.
Outside the EU, the treaty also had the support of the US, Australia, Canada, Japan, Morocco, New Zealand, Singapore and South Korea.

However, following significant protests, several countries chose not to back it.
Wednesday’s vote is seen by most observers as the final blow to the treaty in its current form. It means no member states will be able to join the agreement.

EU Trade Commissioner Karel De Gucht said work on tackling piracy would continue.
“Today’s rejection does not change the fact that the European Commission has committed itself to seeking answers to the questions raised by the European public,” he said.
“The European Commission will continue to seek the legal opinion of the European Court of Justice on whether this agreement harms any of the fundamental rights of European citizens – including freedom of speech.
“European citizens have raised these concerns and now they have the right to receive answers. We must respect that right.”
As the decision was made, some of those in attendance held banners reading: “Hello democracy, goodbye ACTA.”
However, key players in the creative industries expressed frustration at the decision.
“ACTA is an important tool for promoting European jobs and intellectual property,” said Anne Bergman-Tahon, director of the Federation of European Publishers.
“Unfortunately the treaty got off on the wrong foot in the parliament, and the real and significant merits of the treaty did not prevail.”
Alan Drewsen, executive director of the International Trademark Association, warned that Europe could now be left behind when it comes to protecting intellectual property.
“Europe could have seized the chance to support an important treaty that improved intellectual property standards internationally,” he said.
“We expect that ACTA will move ahead without the EU, which is a significant loss for the 27 member states.”

• The Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) is an international treaty aiming to standardise copyright protection measures.
• It seeks to curb trade of counterfeit physical goods, including copyrighted material online.
• Deterrents include possible imprisonment and fines.

A new track featuring previously unreleased vocals by Amy Winehouse has surfaced online.

British-born actress Naomi Watts is starring in a film that portrays the last two years of Princess Diana’s life.
Principal photography started this week. The film is due out next year.
Speaking from the set, Naomi Watts said: “I’m excited and honored to be playing the role of a truly remarkable woman, who had such a positive and profound impact in so many ways.”
Since being announced in February, the film has changed its name from Caught in Flight to the simpler Diana.

Ecosse directors Robert Bernstein and Douglas Rae have moved to quash any criticism of the film, saying that “everyone’s aim [was] to produce a truly insightful and compassionate study of Diana’s later years”.

Ukrainian Police in capital Kiev have fired tear gas to disperse hundreds of protesters angry over a new language law that boosts the status of Russian.
The clashes erupted outside a building where President Viktor Yanukovych was scheduled to give a speech.
The new law, drafted by Viktor Yanukovych’s Party of the Regions, was adopted by parliament on Tuesday without a debate on numerous amendments.
World-famous boxer Vitali Klitschko was among the activists hurt in the unrest.
The interior ministry said 10 anti-riot police from the elite Berkut unit were admitted to hospital with injuries. The ministry said protesters assaulted police with bottles and aerosol sprays.
The police were equipped with helmets, shields and batons.

Viktor Yanukovych decided to postpone his speech on Wednesday as clashes continued. He invited parliament leaders and heads of parliamentary factions to meet him to discuss the resignations.

Correspondents say about 1,000 opposition activists took part in the demonstration.
WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko called Tuesday’s vote “political suicide” and urged opposition MPs to boycott parliament. He heads an opposition group called Udar (Blow).
The controversial vote prompted a request from Speaker Volodymyr Lytvyn to step down. “I have been fooled, Ukraine has been fooled,” he complained.
Volodymyr Lytvyn’s deputy Mykola Tomenko also tendered his resignation.
Meanwhile, seven MPs angry at the vote have gone on hunger strike.
The bill will become law once signed off by President Viktor Yanukovych, who is seen by his critics as being close to Moscow. The bedrock of his support is in Russian-speaking eastern Ukraine.
The second reading vote took place despite scuffles in the chamber between the ruling party and opposition MPs.
The bill grants Russian, mother tongue of most people in east and south Ukraine, “regional language” status.
Critics fear it will dilute Ukraine’s sovereignty and help return Ukraine to Moscow’s sphere of influence.
While Ukrainian would remain the country’s official language, Russian could be used in courts, hospitals, schools and other institutions in Russian-speaking regions. In practice Russian is already used widely in official establishments in Ukraine.
The new law says local officials can use a “regional language” if at least 10% of the local population are native speakers of that language.
Those officials would have to know the regional language and be able to use it in their official duties.
People will be allowed to choose which language they want their documents issued in – Ukrainian or regional.
The new law de facto grants Russian the status of an official language – but not the state one – in most of Ukraine.

The bodies of the crew members of a Turkish jet shot down by Syria last month have been found.
Turkey’s TRT television said the two airmen were found on the Eastern Mediterranean seabed by a US deep-sea exploration vessel, according to AP.
The F-4 Phantom jet was shot down on 22 June after Syrian authorities claimed it had violated their airspace, a claim disputed by Turkey.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said he regretted the move “100%”.
The Turkish military named the crew members as Air Force Captain Gokhan Ertan and Air Force Lieutenant Hasan Huseyin Aksoy, according to Reuters news agency.
The military did not say precisely where the bodies were found and said the wreckage of the plane itself had not yet been spotted, reports AFP.
Five climbers who fell to their deaths while climbing Swiss mountain Lagginhorn on Tuesday were German and included two teenagers, police have confirmed.
A sixth climber, who survived and alerted authorities, was the father of two of the victims.
Another man died along with his son and a family friend, in what was the worst Swiss Alpine accident this year.
Police are uncertain what caused the accident, but said the climbers did not appear to have been roped together.
The hikers were descending the Lagginhorn mountain when they fell, at about 13:00 on Tuesday.
The 4,010 m (13,155 ft) Lagginhorn is in the Valais canton in the Swiss Alps, about 10 km (6 miles) from the Italian border.
“The five climbers fell several hundred metres. They all died at the scene,” a local police statement said on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, police gave further details about the victims.
They included a 14-year-old girl and her 20-year-old brother.
Their father survived. He had climbed most of the way but did not make the final attempt at the summit because he felt unwell.
He saw the tragedy unfold and raised the alarm immediately. Police said he was airlifted to safety by helicopter.
The three other victims were a 44-year-old man, his 17-year-old son and a 21-year-old friend.
A mountain guide who spoke to the party the night before their ascent said they might have slipped on ice hidden by fresh snow.
“There was rain up to about 3,500m and perhaps a little fresh snow [at the summit), so they probably slipped because there was ice underneath the snow,” Arthur Anthamatten told the AFP news agency.
He had met the party at his refuge on the mountain, where they stayed on Monday night.
He said he and his colleagues were shocked by the scale of the accident.
“This kind of thing can happen, but never five people killed in one go. Two or three people perhaps, but this is not a difficult mountain,” he said.
The Lagginhorn is the lowest of the 4,000 m chain of mountains in the Alps. It is regarded as one of the easier peaks to climb.
Weather conditions in the area were said to be relatively good.

The particle has been the subject of a 45-year hunt to explain how matter attains its mass.
Both of the two Higgs-hunting experiments at the Large Hadron Collider have reached a level of certainty worthy of a “discovery”.
More work will be needed to be certain that what they see is a Higgs, however.
Both teams claimed they had seen a “bump” in their data corresponding to a particle weighing in at about 125-126 gigaelectronvolts (GeV) – about 130 times heavier than the proton at the heart of every atom.
The results announced at CERN, home of the LHC in Geneva, were each met with thunderous applause.

Prof. Peter Higgs, the former University of Edinburgh theoretician who with five others predicted the Higgs particle’s existence in 1964, praised the LHC teams, calling the results “a testament to the expertise of the researchers”.
“I never expected this to happen in my lifetime and shall be asking my family to put some champagne in the fridge,” he said.
The CMS team claimed that by combining two of its data sets, they had attained a confidence level just at the “five-sigma” point – about a one-in-3.5 million chance that the signal they see would appear if there were no Higgs particle.
However, a full combination of the CMS data brings that number just back to 4.9 sigma – a one-in-2 million chance.
Joe Incandela, spokesman for CMS, was unequivocal.
“The results are preliminary but the five-sigma signal at around 125 GeV we’re seeing is dramatic. This is indeed a new particle,” he told the Geneva meeting.
Fabiola Gianotti, spokeswoman for the ATLAS experiment, announced even more irrefutable results.
“We observe in our data clear signs of a new particle, at the level of five sigma, in the mass region around 126 GeV,” she said.
Anticipation had been high and rumors were rife before the announcement.
Indications are strong, but it remains to be seen whether the particle the team reports is in fact the Higgs – those answers will certainly not come on Wednesday.
A confirmation would be one of the biggest scientific discoveries of the century; the hunt for the Higgs has been compared by some physicists to the Apollo programme that reached the Moon in the 1960s.
Two different experiment teams at the LHC observe a signal in the same part of the “search region” for the Higgs – at a rough mass of 125 GeV.
Hints of the particle, revealed to the world by teams at the LHC in December 2011, have since strengthened markedly.
The $10 billion LHC is the most powerful particle accelerator ever built: it smashes two beams of protons together at close to the speed of light with the aim of revealing new phenomena in the wreckage of the collisions.
The ATLAS and CMS experiments, which were designed to hunt for the Higgs at the LHC, each detect a signal with a statistical certainty of more than 4.5 sigma.
Five sigma is the generally accepted benchmark for claiming the discovery of a new particle. It equates to a one in 3.5 million chance that there is no Higgs and the “bump” in the data is down to some statistical fluctuation.
Prof. Stefan Soldner-Rembold, from the University of Manchester, said earlier this week: “The evidence is piling up… everything points in the direction that the Higgs is there.”
The Higgs is the cornerstone of the Standard Model – the most successful theory to explain the workings of the Universe.
But most researchers now regard the Standard Model as a stepping stone to some other, more complete theory, which can explain phenomena such as dark matter and dark energy.
Once the new particle is confirmed, scientists will have to figure out whether the particle they see is the version of the Higgs predicted by the Standard Model or something more exotic.
Scientists will look at how the Higgs decays or – transforms – into other, more stable particles after being produced in collisions at the LHC.

• The Higgs boson came about because although the Standard Model holds together neatly, nothing requires the particles to have mass; for a fuller theory, the Higgs – or something else – must fill in that gap
A British research team claims that adding enzymes from seaweed microbes to toothpaste and mouthwash could provide better protection against tooth decay.
Researchers at Newcastle University had been studying Bacillus licheniformis to see if it could clean ships’ hulls.
But the scientists now believe it could protect the areas between teeth where plaque can gather despite brushing.
Their lab tests suggest the microbe’s enzyme cuts through plaque, stripping it of bacteria that cause tooth decay.

Dr. Nick Jakubovics, of the university’s school of dental sciences, said: “Plaque on your teeth is made up of bacteria which join together to colonize an area in a bid to push out any potential competitors.
“Traditional toothpastes work by scrubbing off the plaque containing the bacteria – but that’s not always effective – which is why people who religiously clean their teeth can still develop cavities.
“We found this enzyme can remove some of these undesirable bacteria from plaque.”
Plaque is made up of lots of different decaying bacteria.
When bacterial cells die, the DNA inside them leaks out and makes a biofilm that sticks to the teeth.
Instead of removing the plaque entirely, Dr. Nick Jakubovics believes the treatment could strip away the harmful bacteria, like Streptococcus mutans, that cause tooth decay.
“Ultimately we hope to harness this power into a paste, mouthwash or denture-cleaning solution.”
He said more studies are needed to show the technique works and is safe before any products could be brought to market.
He is presenting the latest findings to a meeting of the Society for Applied Microbiology, the organization that is funding the research along with the Newcastle Healthcare Charity.

Applying an empirical investigation to discover the nature of coolness, three separate studies were devised to first identify through a survey qualities that were cool, then ask people to rank those qualities in desirability and then to rank their friends on these qualities.
Basing their research on the notion that cool is being attractive and desirable and not unwanted, Ilan Dar-Nimrod, who works at the University of Rochester Medical Center and his friend, Ian Hansen of York College came to their scientific conclusions.
Beginning their research after Ilan Dar-Nimrod disagreed with his friend, Ian Hansen’s assertion that Steve Buscemi was cool, the two scientists decided to discover why Buscemi was even considered cool in the first place.
With his unusual looks and whining voice, Steve Buscemi is not the quintessential Hollywood star however, he has starred in some iconic and arguably “cool” roles such as Mr. Pink in Reservoir Dogs and Enoch “Nucky” Thompson in HBO’s Boardwalk Empire.

Deciding to have a go at settling the debate of whether Steve Buscemi is cool or not, the pair came up with three separate studies which asked 353 college students at the University of British Columbia to first submit words they thought described cool.
Then secondly, the students deemed these qualities as how desirable they were and then judged their friends.
“We wanted to tease apart coolness and social desirability,” said Ilan Dar-Nirmrod, who is aware his last name is not cool according to a report on MSNBC.
“There is a lot of overlap between social desirability and coolness.”
Indeed, the majority of responses that the two psychologists received as words to describe cool focused primarily on appearance.
They saw cool being equated as “hot”, “handsome”, “beautiful” and “sexy”, revealing an overwhelming theme of simple physical looks.
“Our research was kind of designed to see what goes into coolness evaluation,” said Ilan Dar-Nimrod.
“What we found was that the dominant perception of coolness is revolving around social desirability and generic semi-gentrified traits.”
Aside from good looks, the researchers expected to find rebelliousness to be a cool trait, reminiscent of a James Dean.
What they discovered instead was that the students they used in their study thought that friendliness constitutes cool.
In fact, on top of being good looking and friendly, if you are a high achiever in life then you are moving into ice-cold territory.
As well as being generally successful and blessed in life, volunteering to help within society is seen as cool too.
Also listed as desirable traits that are equated with coolness are trendiness, individualism, confidence and having a sense of humor.
And although it seems that coolness is more straight-laced than first thought, the James Dean-style, smoking, moody, “contrarian cool” still exists.
“There is a smaller and different facet…which is the dark, historical coolness, revolving around counterculture, risky behavior, irony,” said Ilan Dar-Nimrod, who still thinks that Steve Buscemi is not cool.
“Going into the project, it is what I perceived as coolness.
OraQuick home HIV test is expected to go on sale in the US within months, after winning regulator approval.
The OraQuick test checks saliva from a mouth swab for HIV and can produce results in 20 to 40 minutes.
Government estimates suggest 1.2 million people in the US are HIV-positive, but 20% do not know they are.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has said it hopes the over-the-counter test will reach people who might not otherwise get tested.

The test is expected to be sold in as many as 30,000 pharmacies and homeware shops, as well as online.
The manufacturer, OraSure, has not said how much the test will sell for but confirmed it would cost less than $60.

The company is planning a “pretty massive effort” to market the test, Douglas Michels added.
Approval of the test has been praised by HIV/AIDS awareness groups.
“This test will allow anyone to empower themselves to know their HIV status when, how and with whom they want to,” Tom Donohue, founding director of Who’s Positive, told the Associated Press.
But the FDA has highlighted in its announcement that the test may not be 100% accurate, and has stressed the need for additional testing by medical professionals to confirm the result.
OraSure said that in trials the test was able to correctly detect HIV among people carrying the virus only 92% of the time.
It was 99% accurate for negative results – or identifying that someone does not carrying the virus.
Meanwhile, Dr Jonathan Mermin, director of the HIV unit at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said people who receive negative results should take the test again after three months, because it can take weeks before antibodies to HIV appear.
Healthcare professionals have been using a version of the OraQuick test since 2002.
For the last two decades there have been about 50,000 new cases of HIV in the US each year.
Clayton Osbon, the US pilot who screamed about a bomb on a flight and had to be restrained by passengers was found not guilty for reasons of insanity, a court has said.
A judge in Amarillo, Texas, said JetBlue pilot Clayton Osbon suffered “severe mental disease or defect”.
Clayton Osbon was previously ruled competent enough to stand trial. He is to be re-evaluated before a hearing on 6 August to decide whether he can be released.
He was charged with interfering with crew on a New York-Las Vegas flight.
The plane was forced to make an emergency landing after Clayton Osbon’s actions on 27 March.

Passengers said they had to wrestle the pilot to the floor during the flight after he began screaming about a bomb and terrorists.
At the time, JetBlue had said there was nothing in the pilot’s records that suggested he might be a risk.
Court records say Clayton Osbon must show “by clear and convincing evidence” that, if released, he would not pose any future danger. The judge could decide to commit him to a mental health facility.
A JetBlue spokeswoman said the airline still employs Clayton Osbon but he is on “inactive status”, adding that the company was still offering support to the pilot’s family.
A copy of a rare 16th century map known as “the birth certificate of America” has been discovered in Germany.
The map, by the famous cartographer Martin Waldseemuller, is credited with being the first to document and name the newly-discovered land of America.
It had been thought that Martin Waldseemuller had only made four copies, but researchers at a Munich university have now discovered a fifth version.
This new map was found in the pages of an unrelated 19th century book.
Sven Kuttner, head of old books at Munich’s Ludwig Maximilian University, said: “It seems to be a second edition and this is a unique map. Until now, we have no signs for a further map like this.”

AAA, one of the nation’s largest travel agencies, projects 42.3 million Americans will hit the road, traveling 50 miles or more from home between July 3 and July 8 for all the festivities.
Last year, when the holiday fell on a Monday, 40.3 million people traveled. But before you think it’s a big increase, note that AAA’s economists changed how they estimated the number of travelers: They used a six-day period this year compared to five last year.
The typical traveler will spend $749 over six days, down from $807 over five days last year, according to an online survey of 344 people conducted for AAA. Another look at the holiday, by Visa Inc., shows that all Americans – whether traveling or not – will spend an average of $191 on July 4th activities, down from $216 last year. Visa surveyed 1,012 people by telephone.

Power companies said that the heat wave will keep some customers without power for the rest of the week, unable to turn on their air conditioners, surf the web or even turn on the lights.
“This is the worst outage we’ve ever had,” said Jeri Matheny, spokeswoman for Appalachia Power, which serves most of southern West Virginia, to CNN.
“We’ll end up rebuilding large pieces of an infrastructure system in five to seven days that took decades to build.”
The storms have also brought on heavy rain or desperately dry conditions which will likely stay through the 4th of July, causing fireworks to be cancelled pre-emptively in numerous areas.
The storms crossed the Eastern United States with heavy rain, hail and winds reaching 80 miles per hour starting Friday night, leaving more than 3 million homes and businesses without the power, according to a federal energy report.
The storms also claimed at least 22 lives, mostly from falling trees and branches across the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic states.
Ken Mallette, executive director of the Maryland Emergency Management Agency, told CNN that the damage compared to Hurricane Irene’s visit last year.

FirstEnergy Corp of Ohio said it had 216,000 customers out in its five-state service area of Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland and New Jersey. That was down from about the initial 566,000 affected by the storms.

Mass is a measure of how much stuff an object – such as a particle or molecule – contains. If it were not for mass, all of the fundamental particles that make up atoms would whiz around at light-speed and the Universe as we know it would never have clumped into matter.

According to the theory, all of space is filled by a field – known as the Higgs field, which is mediated by particles known as Higgs bosons.
Other particles gain mass when they interact with the field, much as a person feels resistance from the water – drag – as they wade through a swimming pool.
The boson is the last missing particle in the Standard Model, the most widely accepted theory of how the cosmos works. But the Higgs remains a theoretical construct that has never been observed in a particle accelerator.
Four of the six theoretical physicists credited with coming up with the Higgs mechanism in the 1960s – including Prof Peter Higgs, after whom it is named – have been invited to CERN in Geneva for the presentations, fuelling anticipation of a major announcement.
Unconfirmed reports suggest that the signal detected at a mass of 125 gigaelectronvolts (GeV), which was announced in December, has since strengthened.
“We now have more than double the data we had last year,” said CERN’s director for research and computing, Sergio Bertolucci.
“That should be enough to see whether the trends we were seeing in the 2011 data are still there, or whether they’ve gone away. It’s a very exciting time.”
Discovering particles is a numbers game, and scientists analyze many events that could be representative of a Higgs boson being produced in the LHC.
The hints of the Higgs revealed in 2011 had a statistical certainty of just two sigma.
Three sigma represents about one in 700 likelihood that a “bump” in the data is down to some statistical fluctuation, in the absence of a Higgs. But the benchmark for a discovery is five sigma, denoting a one-in-3.5 million likelihood that a result is down to such a fluctuation.
Rumors suggest the certainty level has now crept beyond four sigma. This might not be enough to announce that scientists have found the elusive particle. But it would suggest the LHC’s scientists are within touching distance, and several physicists privately say that such a signal is now unlikely to go away.
Also, the idea that some systemic error could affect all the experiments that see hints of the Higgs – including those at the LHC and the US Tevatron machine (which search for the particle in different ways) – seems just as improbable.
But if and when a new particle is discovered, it will not be clear straight away that it is the Higgs. Physicists will need to characterize its properties in order to confirm whether it is the version of the Higgs predicted by the Standard Model, a “non-conformist” Higgs that hints at new laws of physics, or something else entirely.
