Whitney Houston picture in open casket on National Enquirer’s cover

A chilling picture apparently showing late singer Whitney Houston in an open coffin has been published on the cover of the National Enquirer.

The image shows Whitney Houston lying dead in her golden casket, clad in her favorite purple dress and wearing what looks like a diamond broach and earring.

National Enquirer has run the snap alongside a bold headline proclaiming: “Whitney: The last photo!”

It is understood Whitney Houston picture in open casket was taken inside the Whigham Funeral Home in Newark, New Jersey, where her family attended a private wake last Friday on the eve of her funeral.

National Enquirer claims the photo was taken at the private viewing – although does not reveal who took the picture.

Whitney Houston was wearing jewels worth $500,000 and had gold slippers on her feet, according to the publication.

No doubt the photograph – which was published in the magazine’s latest edition – is bound to stir a strong reaction.

Whitney Houston’s funeral took place on Saturday and was attended by stars including Mariah Carey, Oprah Winfrey and her co-star from The Bodyguard, Kevin Costner.

Whitney Houston was laid to rest at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield, New Jersey, on Sunday in a burial service attended by close family and friends. The legendary singer, who died on February 11 at age 48, is buried near her father, John Russell Houston, Jr.

  1. AS SAD BUT TRUE, I DON’T KNOW WHY EVERYONE IS SO SURPRISED THAT HOUSTON PICTURE IN CASKET IS EXPOSED ON NATIONAL ENQUIRER. WE ALL KNOW HOW PEOPLE WILL DO ANYTHING FOR MONEY. FAMILY, FRIENDS, FANS, ALIKE WILL STAB YOU IN THE BACK, AND LOSE THE SO CALLED LOVE AND RESPECT FOR THE LOVE OF MONEY! THEY SHOULD HAVE JUST SHOWED HOUSTON BODY AND GOT AHEAD OF THE SNEAKY LOW LIFE PERSON FOR SNAPPING THIS PICTURE SO THEY COULD NOT HAVE BENEFITED A LARGE CASH AMOUNT FOR THERE AWFUL DECEITFULNESS. AIN’T NO SHAME IN THEIR GAME MAKES ME SICK, BUT WHAT CAN YOU DO..

  2. VERY DISTASTEFUL ON THEIR PART…

  3. On different websites and tv shows, the media and the public are using words like “Chilling” and “Shocking” but I’m just surprised that a photo surfaced so quickly within a few days of her death….usually a photo will show up maybe a few weeks to a month or so. Looks as if it was taken at the wake which means an employee of the funeral home OR family member/friend who was invited.
She looks like she’s just “sleeping” peacefully and lovely.

  4. very disrespect to her family and morbid mind of the person who did something like that.
    let her to R.I.P

  5. Who ever did this, needs a heart, a reason to exist … and divine intervention! If you are actually reading this… try to be human before you actually die. Of course no one will care to see your open casket because you were too busy being heartless instaed of human and joy to others.

  6. You will reap what you sow N.E. What if it was your family member, how would you feel, would you put a picture of your father or mother in a national magazine in their open coffin. I don’t think so. It’s funny we have lost a lot of popular stars and I don’t remember seeing a picture of any of them in their open coffin. Maybe it will actually cost you twice as much. We love you Whitney.

  7. Okay, if all reports were true that Whitney Houston was broke and surely nobody believes that if truly the pics and numbers are real! Here casket was lined in Gold and valued at tens of thousands of dollars! She had on gold slippers and jewelry amounting to around $500,000! Who ever snapped the pictures did so close up and at a distance! It was definately someone on the inside (FAMILY, FRIEND & OR FUNERAL EMPLOYEE) I will say as the pic leaked so will the name of who sold it? Nothing goes without being known long! If it was not family it was a friends betrayal for money! Let’s realize to some as The Enquierer this photo was worth a lot of money $$$$$ Regardless, of right or wrong it will ultimately come out! Let us also realize the security rediculous for this funeral home and service. It was an INSIDE JOB! Think people if there was not truly any money left??? This photo as MORBID as it seems is a way for whomever SOLD IT TO MAKE MILLIONS along with THE INQUIERER! They should be ashamed! I hope it is leaked soon who released the photo! I think we all will be amazed to know? WAS it family, friend, security and or funeral home employee! INSIDE JOB that close folks! If you look at the photo far away nobody is around??? ODD!?

  8. It’s a photo. Of a deceased person. In a casket. What’s all the hub-bub? Isn’t there a photo of a Pope in a casket? A U.S. Soldier in a casket? Priests? Children even? Why is it so horrible to show a celebrity in a casket? It wasn’t a distasteful or disrespectful photo. Oh, or is the pissy part about it that someone made a dime off of it? Newspapers buy photos and stories also, that’s a pretty common way that info gets given to the public – and I’m sure if the New York TImes had run the photo, there wouldn’t be nearly the ‘scandal’. I love the ‘chilling’ tagline though – how is being deceased ‘chilling’? Maybe if her eyes were open and she was showing fangs… otherwise, guess what people, she’s just a beautiful person that has passed away and the public is sad and curious. The photo is not the end of the world, or even disrespectful.

  9. Be thankful it is this picture. She is beautiful here. At least is not a picture of her lying in the morgue.

  10. Definitely an inside job. When I say inside I mean an employee, maybe even the director herself. She released a statement saying that it wasn’t one of her employees, how can she be so sure? The NE has too many details. She had gold slippers on her feet? hmmm…. Well maybe the person that put the gold slippers on her feet is responsible……

  11. This is so despicable. And the National Enquirer is full of shit!!. This is a human being!. NO respect for how this made her daughter feel or her family, friends just no one.I love how one of the people who work at the National Enquirer said “I thought it was a beautiful picture” total BS, if that was his/her mother’s dead body it would be different. This is so sad, if my mother’s DEAD BODY was splattered on a MAGAZINE in a store, do you know what that would do to me?. As for the comment from Regina she’s obviously delusional, “It’s a photo. Of a deceased person. In a casket. What’s all the hub-bub? Isn’t there a photo of a Pope in a casket? A U.S. Soldier in a casket? Priests? Children even? Why is it so horrible to show a celebrity in a casket?”. Were those photos taken purposely? Or were they stolen against the families wishes?. I have many family members serving in the military and if anyone of them died I don’t want their dead body plastered on the front page of a magazine for the whole entire world to see against me and my families wishes?. Way too disrespectful. No, there are some things I say “well okay, it’s not that bad” but this is too much and no I’m not some die hard Whitney fan. Nobodies dead body should be on the front cover of a magazine like that, I wouldn’t want my dead body or my child’s dead body plastered on the cover of a magazine…when did we as a country come to this?. Disrespecting peoples privacy to this EXTREME?.

  12. I do not find this offensive. It used to be common practice to take casket photos…. for those who could not be there. I have photos of both my grandmothers which were made into postcards (back then) – i would imagine for sending to family who lived far away and could not make it to the funeral.
