Canadian House of Commons member Pat Martin rushed out of the parliament and nearly missed a procedural vote because of his tight underwear.
His cut-price and, as it turned out, overly tight underpants made it difficult for him to sit through a one-by-one vote, Pat Martin told a bewildered Speaker Andrew Scheer.
However, the opposition lawmaker was back in time to cast his ballot.
A Twitter storm about not very well briefed lawmakers hit shortly afterwards.
Pat Martin, who is representing the riding of Winnipeg Centre for the New Democratic Party, drew applause and laughter from the chamber when he explained his temporary absence.
“They had men’s underwear on for half price and I bought a bunch that was clearly too small for me. I find it difficult to sit for any length of time.”
The speaker of the house said he initially ordered Pat Martin to sit back down when he wanted to leave.
“I did not understand his explanation at the time and I am not sure I understand it now,” Andrew Scheer said.

Gwyneth Paltrow arrived on the red carpet at the El Capitan Theatre in Los Angeles, California, for the Marvel’s Iron Man 3 premiere, in a gown which looked demure from a distance.
Gwyneth Paltrow’s Antonio Berardi dress featured mesh panels down the sides, showing off her hips and décolletage area.
The material would have made it almost impossible for her to wear underwear beneath the number.
While she could have quite possibly been wearing a strapless bra, briefs would have been too tricky.

The look of her item of clothing – which created the optical illusion of a curvy white silhouette down the middle – also drew attention to her tiny waist.
With a dark green peplum section that matched her kimono style arm cuffs, 40-year-old Gwyneth Paltrow- who plays Pepper Potts – looked in great shape.
She is known for taking up often strict healthy eating plans – such as eating only macrobiotic meals at one point – in an effort to stay trim.
Gwyneth Paltrow allowed her skin to glow in natural make-up and wore her blonde locks straight and to one side over her shoulder.
She added a fun twist to her appearance with purple nail polish and paired a large drop earring with a contrasting small stud that evening.

Seiren, a Japanese textile company, has launched Deoest, a new brand of odor-eating underwear, claiming that it neutralize the smell of flatulence.
The pants are said to be a big hit with Japanese businessmen, as it means they can break wind without getting caught.
But there’s also a pink pair for women, too.
The odor-absorbing range, known as Deoest, effectively kills odor from wind. It does this using ceramic particles in the material fibres, which are said to absorb and neutralize gassy smells.
A word of warning, however: there is no word on whether they might mask any sound.
Deoest range was developed after the manufacturer, Seiren, was contacted by a doctor.
He wanted to help patients suffering from digestive complaints such as irritable bowel syndrome disguise their excessive flatulence.

“It took us a few years to develop the first deodorant pants that are comfortable enough to wear in daily life but efficient in quickly eliminating strong smells,” said Nami Yoshida, a spokeswoman for the company, Seiren.
“At first we thought about selling them to those who require nursing care and to hospitals.
“But to our surprise, lots of ordinary people, like businessmen who are in positions that require them to see people on a daily basis, bought them,” she said.
Deoest range has now expanded to 22 items, including socks that prevent feet from smelling and T-shirts that mask the whiff of sweaty armpits.

Bids for the stained underwear reached £5,000 ($8,000) but the reserve price was £7,000 ($11,000).
The bible was among more than 100 lots of Elvis memorabilia on sale.
It was sold on behalf of a British Elvis collector who is selling a quarter of his collection.
Karen Fairweather, from the auctioneers, said: “It was a really exciting atmosphere in the room, we had 300 people and there was bidding online and on the telephone across the world.
“You could hear a pin drop when it sold for that price.
“There were three rival bidders on the phone and once it got over £20,000 [$32,000] each bid was taking a while, because they each had a price in mind for the bible and they were thinking about it.
“There was a round of applause when the hammer went down. It was incredible.”
The winning telephone bidder, who did not want to be identified, was an American man based in the UK.

A man from Essex, UK, who stripped down to his underwear and crawled across a frozen river to rescue his trapped dog, has been condemned by firefighters.
According to an eyewitness, the man fell into the River Stour, in Dedham, Essex, at about 10:00 GMT on Sunday but managed to climb out with the animal.
Fellow dog walker Paul Wenborne, who witnessed the incident, described it as a “foolish act of bravery”.
An Essex Fire Service spokesman said: “This was extremely dangerous.”

Fish porter Paul Wenborne, 52, of Rayleigh, Essex, said he was amazed at the man’s actions.
“I was with two friends and we couldn’t believe what we were seeing,” he said.
“He stripped down to his pants and started crawling across the ice.
“About a yard or so from the dog, he fell in but managed to get hold of the dog and put it on the ice.
“He then had to swim two or three yards and then crawl back on the ice to dry land.
“He put his clothes back on and carried on. It was a foolish act of bravery.”
Essex Fire Service confirmed it was not called to the incident.
Last week, Essex assistant divisional officer Stuart McMillan issued a warning about icy lakes and ponds.
“Even though this ice appears to be strong it can be eggshell thin and anyone who falls through into the water below could get trapped under the ice and would only be able to survive for minutes in the freezing water,” he said.
“The most common cause is people chasing their dogs out on to the ice, and I urge people not to do this.
“It isn’t worth the risk. Dogs will normally make it safely off the ice and back to the shore – the same cannot be said for people.”
