Tom Cruise quietly returned to Los Angeles, following a filming spell in Iceland, to spend time with adopted teenage children Connor and Isabella, from his marriage with ex Nicole Kidman.
Tom Cruise, who turned 50 yesterday, was expecting friends and family – including estranged wife Katie Holmes and his only biological child Suri – to flock to him in New York where they lived in an apartment together.
However, after Katie Holmes made a shock decision to file divorce papers last Friday, the powerful king and queen of A-list stardom have now gone their separate ways.

A source told People: “The plan was to spend his birthday with Katie and Suri (in New York City).
“Then they were going to fly to California where he is going to finish Oblivion and spend time there.”
Connor Cruise, 17, openly showed support for his father by tweeting this week: “#LaFamilia Always. Friends Come And Go, But Family Is Forever.”
The insider added: “They were all together, and one of the reasons he came back to California was that he had to take his family back to LA (in the Burbank area).”
To dampen Tom Cruise’s spirits further, is has been reported that the air between the pair is turning sour as Katie Holmes’ lawyers are said to have filed for an emergency custody and child support hearing in New York, which will see the pair come face to face for the first time since their split.
Katie Holmes, 33, has requested sole legal custody and primary physical custody of six-year-old Suri.
However, Katie Holmes seems to have been empowered by the move, venturing out for ice-cream with Suri last night with a smile painted on her face and telling reporters: “I’m alright.”
A hearing on the filing, called an emergent application, has been set for July 17, reports Radar.

The source added to RadarOnline.com: “Katie did not want Tom making all the decisions in Suri’s life, and that’s what was going on. She decided it was high time she started deciding on what was best for her daughter, or at least having an equal say, and she knew that would be impossible if she remained Mrs. Tom Cruise.”

While Tom Cruise has been looking dapper on the red carpet at the other Mission Impossible premieres it appears he decided to dress down for the Spanish screening.
Tom Cruise, who is married to actress turned fashion designer Katie Holmes, opted for a camel coloured leather jacket which he teamed with a cream polo neck and brown trousers.
His British co-star Simon Pegg was dressed in a grey suit which left Tom looking a little out of place.
Despite his casual attire, Tom Cruise was still in high demand from the crowd and many fans were eager to catch a glimpse or snap a photo of the actor.
But it appeared Tom Cruise’s biggest fan for the evening was the Duchess of Alba who was seen gazing at him with a look of admiration on her face.
The Duchess was joined by her 60-year-old husband who she married in a ceremony in October.
