Ant-Man Beats Pixels at US Box Office
Marvel’s Ant-Man has continued to top the US box office, beating off a challenge by Adam Sandler’s Pixels.
Ant-Man took $24.8 million over the weekend, bringing its US earnings to $106.1 million.
Pixels, which scored generally unfavorable reviews on Metacritic, missed first place with $24 million on its debut weekend.
However, Adam Sandler’s movie attracted younger people with 62% of its audience aged under 25.
The comedy sees an alien race trying to wipe out mankind using 1980s video game characters like Pac-Man.
Despicable Me prequel Minions and Amy Schumer comedy Trainwreck took the third and fourth spots with $22.1 million and $17.3 million, respectively.
Southpaw, a drama starring Jake Gyllenhaal, landed a strong uppercut, placing in the top five with a $16.5 million opening.
Paper Towns, an adaptation of John Green’s novel, starring Cara Delevigne, opened in sixth place with $12.5 million.
According to exit polls, 71% of Paper Towns audience was female and 78% were under age 25.
