The new details of what uncovered David Petraeus’ months-long relationship with his biographer Paula Broadwell come as the FBI continue to search military documents Broadwell admitted to stashing in her home.

Security officials have revealed Paula Broadwell had “substantial” classified information on her computer which should have been stored more securely.

The computer was taken from Paula Broadwell’s Charlotte, North Carolina home on Monday night after she admitted to FBI investigators that she had taken classified military documents, a source told ABC.

President Barack Obama said on Wednesday there was no indication so far that any classified documents had been found but said he will not prejudge the investigation results.

Officials continue to investigate exactly how Paula Broadwell acquired the files, but as an intelligence officer in the U.S. Military Reserve, she had security clearance to review the documents.

The government had demanded she return the documents and organized the visit to her home. Prosecutors are now deciding whether to charge her with a crime.

Paula Broadwell, who has kept a low profile since the scandal broke, was seen taking refuge at her brother’s home in the Petworth suburb of Washington D.C. on Tuesday night.

Paula Broadwell and Jill Kelley, the two women at the centre of the Petraeus sex scandal are facing the prospect of being blackballed by the military establishment.

The US military has revoked access for two women at the heart of the scandal that led to Friday’s resignation of General David Petraeus as CIA director.

Jill Kelley, a 37-year-old Tampa socialite who hosted parties for the nation’s top brass, has been told yesterday that she is no longer welcome at military HQ near her Florida home. Her pass at the Florida air force base where she organized social events has been frozen.

An FBI inquiry into Jill Kelley’s complaints of email harassment revealed that Paula Broadwell and General David Petraeus had been having an affair.

Paula Broadwell, who is a military intelligence reservist with the rank of lieutenant colonel has had her government security clearance suspended pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation.

Paula Broadwell, a 40-year-old married mother of two, had apparently sent the anonymous emails to Jill Kelley warning her to stay away from David Petraeus.

Even before Paula Broadwell’s affair with David Petraeus emerged this was a point which bothered talk-show hosts, perplexed interviewers and left onlookers faintly bewildered at the string of appearances which constituted Broadwell’s publicity tour for that book, All In.

Her own explanation, such as it was, is glib at best. They met, Paula Broadwell repeatedly trotted out, at a dinner for West Point alumni back in 2006.

After dinner there were drinks and at drinks David Petraeus gave her his business card and they just kept in touch.

Two years later, in 2008, Paula Braodwell was working on a dissertation on theories of leadership and so, she told Jon Stewart: “I shot him an email, and said, <<I’m gonna to go for it>>.”

David Petraeus’ reaction was to invite Paula Braodwell well and truly into his camp. For a man of such experience the extent to which he let his guard down is breathtaking.

But then Paula Broadwell is nothing if not convincing when it comes to outlining her own credentials and, given the glowing portrait of “strategic leadership” she penned as David Petraeus’s biography, nothing if not flattering.

In one television interview Paula Broadwell recalled approaching General David Petraeus and asking him to be a case-study for her dissertation. She wanted to show: “What Petraeus’s role was in forcing the military to adapt to win the wars we were in”.

“There was no room for a conversation of shortcomings of the Petraeus theology. She wasn’t a reporter. She struck me as an acolyte,” one advisor to David Petraeus is quoted as telling the New York Post.

And while Paula Broadwell stroked her subject’s ego with one hand she shored up her own credibility with the other; part Mata Hari, part blue-stocking.

Another in the Petraeus camp noted, on meeting her: “I was underwhelmed. It was surprising to me that she was his official biographer.”

But, when it came to promoting her book, for Paula Broadwell establishing her own academic, military and security credentials came second only to establishing whether General David Petraeus was, as Jon Stewart put it, “awesome or incredibly awesome”.

She dropped academic qualifications and security clearance the way a socialite might pepper her conversation with boasts of parties attended and ‘BFFs made.

According to Paula Broadwell, being embedded in Afghanistan with David Petraeus was not the huge leap many imagined because, she explained: “We had previously met through academia.”

Paula Broadwell herself was a graduate of West Point and a specialist in counter-terrorism with black ops experience, high security clearance, “and then some”.

She was High School Valedictorian, All State Basketball player, top of her class at West Point, holder of a masters from Harvard…and how do we know all of this? Because Paula Broadwell has taken great pains to tell us.

Paula Broadwell was an acolyte, never a reporter and an unquestioning devotee of David Petraeus

We know that her husband Scott Broadwell is not “just” a radiologist but an “interventional radiologist”.

Writing in The New Republic, Noam Scheiber states: “When my friend met her, she was fond of pointing out that her husband was no mere radiologist but a special breed known as <<interventional radiologist>>. She would draw out the word <<interventional>> for emphasis.”

We know that she can run 6-minute miles and do hundreds of press-ups, that she has 13% body fat and is an ironman triathlete and marathon runner.

We know all this because Paula Broadwell has told us. We know that she hosted a charity BBQ for wounded veterans because she invited Jon Stewart and the assembled press.

Meanwhile, until Paula Broadwell stopped posting, her Twitter feed was a dizzying mixture of her following both world-causes and the world-famous.

According to the Times, Paula Broadwell recently tweeted: “Heading 2 @AspenInstitue 4 the Seucirty Forum tomorrow! Panel (media & terrorism) followed by a 1v1 run with Lance Armstrong.”

The political, professional and academic platform on which Paula Broadwell now teeters is one entirely of her own, formidable, construction: itself an exercise in strategy to rival David Petraeus’s own.

Paula Broadwell has set out her credentials relentlessly with faux humility, referring to herself as a mere “mentee” of David Petraeus on one hand then telling the Charlotte Observer in her hometown in North Carolina: “Petraeus once joked I was his Avvatar” a breathtakingly arrogant aside.

Margaret Thatcher once noted that if you had to tell people you were a lady, you probably weren’t. But self-effacement seems the only class that Paula Broadwell ever sat out.

And the more impressive Paula Broadwell made herself the more flattering her interest in David Petraeus must surely have been. What better way to appeal to a man in power than to appeal to his vanity?

Noam Scheiber, describes David Petraeus as a man of “overachieving impulses and intellectual pretensions”.

Recognizing that, Paula Broadwell seems to have taken those dubious attributes as her own template for what she described in several publicity interviews as her “new path of the soldier-scholar”.

As such Paula Broadwell has been a keen writer of opinion pieces and regular poster on the West Point Alumni Notes page.

Writing in the Boston Globe in 2009, Paula Broadwell tackled the issue of fraternization between the sexes on the front line: “Human sexuality will always present a challenge to organizational discipline. In isolated outposts [it] could create a situation where issues of sex impede an organization’s survival skills.”

Rather presciently she concluded: “Banning sex is futile and impossible; the best approach is to set rules regarding fraternization, maintain awareness of relationships within the command, and strictly and fairly discipline transgressors.”

On many occasions Paula Broadwell has noted of David Petraeus that he “spoke truth to power”.

But if the events of the past week have shown anything it is that the court of the man known as “King David”, lacked anyone willing or able to do the same to him.

Because where David Petraeus “spoke truth to power” Paula Broadwell wanted to dissect that power and to get close to it.

Revealingly, in a recent address to the University of Denver Paula Broadwell claimed to have been drawn to the military as an “instrument of power” and that she wanted to understand how that instrument worked – presumably so she could play it.

Harassing emails sent by Paula Broadwell to her love rival, Jill Kelley, contained confidential information about David Petraeus’ movements, a law enforcement source has revealed.

After Jill Kelley contacted the FBI, agents launched a massive in-depth investigation into who was sending the emails because they shared this detailed information that was not publicly available.

The catty emails, which told Jill Kelley to “back off” from David Petraeus, were sent to Kelley from several fake email addresses. In order to find who had confidential information about David Petraeus’ whereabouts, the FBI obtained an administrative subpoena, and traced them back to Paula Broadwell.

In the course of the investigation, they also unearthed emails indicating the affair between Paula Broadwell and David Petraeus, leading to his resignation on Friday.

The new details of what uncovered David Petraeus’ months-long relationship with his biographer come as the FBI continue to search military documents Paula Broadwell admitted to stashing in her home.

Security officials have revealed she had “substantial” classified information on her computer which should have been stored more securely.

Preparing an evening meal with a glass of wine in her hand, the 40-year-old mother-of-two wore the strain of the last few days clearly on her face. There was no sign of her husband, Scott Broadwell.

Vernon Loeb, the journalist who co-wrote Paula Broadwell’s biography of General David Petraeus, has confessed to being the “most clueless man in America” for never realizing the two were having an affair.

Vernon Loeb, a Washington Post reporter who covered the Pentagon, was the ghost-writer on Paula Broadwell’s effusive All In: The Education of General David Petraeus.

Colleagues raised an eyebrow at the exclusive access David Petraeus gave to Paula Broadwell, he dismissed any questions, he said.

In a column for the Post, Vernon Loeb said he found Paula Broadwell ambitious, driven and intelligent.

He said he questioned David Petraeus letting her into his inner circle, but explained away his own concerns with realization the two are alike in important ways.

Both David Petraeus and Paula Broadwell are fiercely competitive runners and both a Ivy League-educated West Point Military Academy graduates.

But, Vernon Loeb admits, his judgement was flawed.

“My wife says I’m the most clueless person in America,” he wrote.

“I never anticipated the extramarital affair between David H. Petraeus and Paula Broadwell, the woman I’d worked with for 16 months on a book about Petraeus’s year commanding the war in Afghanistan.”

Vernon Loeb said signs were there, but he always dismissed them.

“Female colleagues of mine weren’t shy in remarking about Broadwell’s good looks and her affinity for flashy, cocktail party attire even at staid national security conferences,” he wrote.

But, Vernon Loeb said, Paula Broadwell spoke warmly about her husband, a surgical radiologist in Charlotte, North Carolina, and she “clearly adores” her two young sons.

The Washington Post journalist says he wrote the book from the basement of his home in Maryland based on the notes and emails collected by Paula Broadwell on her reporting trips.

Paula Broadwell edited most of the manuscript to add her own take on David Petraeus’ command in Afghanistan – including much of the highest praise she communicated throughout the book.

Pictured for the first time since her scandalous affair with shamed former CIA boss David Petraeus became public on Friday, Paula Broadwell has taken refuge at a house owned by her brother, Stephen Kranz, in the Petworth suburb of Washington D.C.

The 40-year-old mother of two was seen looking pensive as she sipped a glass of red wine and spoke to a man and woman in the kitchen on Tuesday night – yet there was no sign of her husband Scott Broadwell.

Paula Broadwell’s emergence from the shadows came a night after FBI agents visited her Charlotte, North Carolina home and left with electronic equipment. She has not returned there since the scandal broke.

A source told ABC the search came after Paula Broadwell admitted to the FBI that she had taken significant amounts of military documents, including classified material, from government buildings to her home.

The government demanded she return the documents and organized the visit. Prosecutors are now deciding whether to charge her with a crime as she has potentially violated federal law.

It was Paula Broadwell’s threatening emails to Jill Kelley, a Florida socialite who is a David Petraeus family friend that led to the FBI’s discovery of the affair between the biographer-turned-mistress and the nation’s top spy-chief.

As if the All In title wasn’t controversial enough for the David Petraeus biography written by his mistress Paula Broadwell, a news station ran a fake book cover during a broadcast – with a few unfortunate words added.

The blunder occurred during ABC’s Denver affiliate KMGH-TV’s 5:00 p.m. news broadcast yesterday, when the image of Paula Broadwell’s All In: The Education of David Petraeus, appeared alongside a recent video of her speaking.

But the title of the book had been altered to say: “All Up in My S*****.”

The photo pops up as one of the top images when doing a Google search of the words “All In” and “Broadwell”, which is likely what the editor searched for.

The photo links to DeathandTaxesmag.com, which had removed the image by Tuesday morning – but republished it later in the day.

In a story on KMGH-TV’s own website, news director Jeff Harris called the incident “a regrettable and an embarrassing error”.

He added: “We are mortified this appeared during our 5 p.m. news broadcast. The editor pulled the image of the book cover from the internet without realizing it had been doctored.

“We sincerely regret the error and have corrected the story to avoid any recurrence of its broadcast. We are following up internally as well to avoid a repeat of this inexcusable oversight.”

There was no mention of the editor’s name, or whether he or she will be keeping their job.

As news of the story broke, the title of the book has been called out as an early indication of what David Petraeus and Paula Broadwell were up to.

Last night, Daily Show host Jon Stewart joked that the title should have been “Who Has Two Thumbs and Is Banging His Biographer?”

A jogger recently discovered a driver’s license belonging to Paula Broadwell, the woman whose affair with David Petraeus led to his resignation as CIA director, according to Maryland Park Police.

Paula Broadwell’s North Carolina license was found in Rock Creek Park, a national park that extends across Washington, D.C.’s northwest border with Maryland. The license was found in D.C. but the jogger who picked it up turned it over to the Maryland Park Police.

Paula Broadwell’s lawyer, Robert F. Muse, confirmed to U.S. News that his client had recently lost her license in the park. The agency notified the FBI that it had obtained the license and is now holding it for 90 days until it is claimed.

Paula Broadwell is believed to be staying at her brother’s residence in the Mt. Pleasant neighborhood of Washington D.C., which is near Rock Creek Park.

The 40-year-old mother of two, who wrote a biography on David Petraeus, has often talked about how she and the ex-CIA chief enjoyed going on long runs together.

Former CIA Director David Petraeus believed he could keep his affair with his biographer Paula Broadwell secret even after he was interviewed by the FBI, it emerged today.

After meeting David Petraeus on October 21 and also conducting two interviews with Paula Broadwell, the second on November 2nd, the FBI had concluded that no criminal charges would be brought.

But the FBI appears to have decided to inform the White House after a Florida-based agent informed a Republican member of Congress of the investigation.

This was the same agent who had triggered the inquiry when his friend, the socialite Jill Kelley, complained to him about anonymous harassing emails.

The fallout now threatens to engulf General John Allen of the US Marines, the NATO commander in Afghanistan. He is said to have exchanged between 20,000 and 30,000 pages of emails with Kelley since 2010.

To complicate matters further, the FBI agent had allegedly sent shirtless photos of himself to Jill Kelley before she reported the harassing emails to him and had been told not to interfere in the investigation.

The agent, depicted by government officials as a Right-winger, contacted Representative Dave Reichert and asked for a member of the House Republican leadership. On October 31st, Dave Reichert put him in contact with Representative Eric Cantor, House Majority Whip.

Eric Cantor informed the FBI of his conversation with the FBI agent, now himself under internal investigation, but did not make the matter public. Eric Cantor apparently knew of the FBI investigation into David Petraeus’ affair eight days before President Barack Obama.

The allegedly harassing emails were discovered to have been sent by Paula Broadwell. It is believed that John Allen received at least one email from the same email account used by Paula Broadwell to contact Jill Kelley.

John Allen is now under investigation by the Pentagon’s inspector general and his Senate confirmation hearings for the new post of NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Europe, originally due on Thursday, have been put on hold.

A senior defence official told reporters that it was alleged there had been “inappropriate communications” between John Allen and Jill Kelley, Leon Panetta, Defence Secretary, said in a statement.

If John Allen follows David Petraeus into retirement it will leave Barack Obama with two gaping holes to fill at the heart of his national security team at a time when he is also expected to be replacing his secretaries of state, defence and treasury.

It is unclear exactly when FBI Director Robert Mueller and Attorney-General Eric Holder were informed although it has emerged that the investigation began as early as May.

The military scandal gripping America took an extraordinary twist yesterday, when a second general, John R. Allen, was linked to one of the two women who precipitated the fall of CIA director General David Petraeus.

David Petraeus, 60, hailed by some as the finest officer of his generation, was forced to step down after the exposure of a scandal involving X-rated emails, compromised state secrets and an affair forged in the ruins of Afghanistan.

His mistress was revealed as Paula Broadwell, a glamorous defence academic and ex-army officer, who had written a fawning biography of David Petraeus after she was “embedded” with him in Afghanistan.

Though they conducted their affair via private email accounts and with sufficient discretion to hoodwink even the suspicious minds of his CIA subordinates, it came to light thanks to old-fashioned female jealousy.

Paula Broadwell became convinced that she was, in fact, involved in a love triangle – and not one that involved David Petraeus’ wife, Holly.

The “other woman”, a 37-year-old Florida socialite and mother of three named Jill Kelley, went to the FBI after receiving threatening emails from Paula Broadwell.

But, almost incredibly, the investigation she set in train not only led to the demise of David Petraeus, but has ensnared another senior figure, General John Allen.

Yesterday, the Pentagon announced that General John Allen, 58, – who was about to be appointed NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander in Europe – is being investigated for “inappropriate communication” with Jill Kelley.

Paula Broadwell, a glamorous defence academic and ex-army officer, had written a fawning biography of David Petraeus after she was embedded with him in Afghanistan

While investigating Jill Kelley’s case, the FBI discovered what it says amounts to between 20,000 and 30,000 pages of emails between her and General John Allen between 2010 and 2012. Yesterday, some of those emails were described by a senior defence official as “flirtatious”.

John Allen succeeded Petraeus as the head of U.S. forces in Afghanistan, but his new European post is now on hold.

Like David Petraeus, John Allen got to know Jill Kelley when he was stationed at Central Command near her home in Tampa, Florida, where she organizes social events for senior military families.

Not only has the widening scandal been disastrous for the Petraeus, Broadwell and Kelley families, but it has also caused major ructions in Washington as the first nightmare of the new Barack Obama presidency.

Some FBI agents considered the missives too trivial to warrant following up, but – encouraged by Jill Kelley’s FBI chum – investigators spent weeks tracing where the emails had been sent from, and eventually matched them to hotels where Paula Broadwell had been staying.

Gaining a warrant to monitor her emails, they discovered Paula Broadwell and David Petraeus – using a pseudonym – had set up private Google Mail accounts to send steamy messages to each other.

(Terrorists use the technique, by which the sender can leave messages in a “draft” folder so the recipient can log in and read them without anything being emailed.)

By late summer, the FBI had worked out the general was involved and – alerting the U.S. Justice Department and Attorney General Eric Holder – they interviewed Paula Broadwell in September.

Paula Broadwell admitted the affair and agreed to hand over her computer. On its hard drive, investigators found copies of undisclosed classified documents – a discovery that inevitably rang even louder alarm bells. (Federal agents returned to her home on Monday night and removed boxes of documents and two computers.)

Confronted by the FBI with its evidence the week before the presidential election, David Petraeus also admitted to the affair, but insisted he hadn’t sent the secret material to his mistress.

Officials are reportedly convinced David Petraeus is telling the truth, but still don’t know how the documents were found on Paula Broadwell’s computer.

David Petraeus found one surprising defender on Tuesday in conservative Christian broadcaster Pat Robertson.

Pat Robertson, who is host of the Christian current events TV show The 700 Club, seemed to justify the disgraced CIA Director’s relationship with Paula Broadwell.

“The man is in a foreign land and he’s lonely and here’s a good looking lady throwing herself at him and… he’s a man,” Pat Robertson said.

He seemed sympathetic to David Petraeus’ “affairs of the heart”, and implied that he seemed to be a tragic victim.

“I don’t think he’s a devious human being. I think he’s been one of the greatest general America has ever produced. He’s a brilliant man, he’s got a Ph.D. from Princeton,” Pat Robertson said.

He added: “We’ll sadly miss a man like that.”

David Petraeus, one of the country’s most decorated war heroes, resigned from his post as the nation’s top spy on Friday after the FBI stumbled across email evidence of a months-long affair between him and Paula Broadwell.

Both are married with children, but David Petraeus, age 60, is 20 years Paula Broadwell’s senior.

Pat Robertson, who is host of the Christian current events TV show The 700 Club, seemed to justify David Petraeus' relationship with Paula Broadwell

Pat Robertson, who is host of the Christian current events TV show The 700 Club, seemed to justify David Petraeus’ relationship with Paula Broadwell

Pat Robertson said it was easy to explained the attraction between the two.

“She is a Lt. Colonel. She is an extremely good looking woman. She is a marathon runner. She runs Ironman triathlons. And she’s out running with him and she’s writing a biography and… I think the term is propinquity.”

Propinquity is a social science term that explains how intimately people connect with each other based on a combination of physical proximity and how similar their backgrounds and viewpoints are.

The Virginia Beach-based broadcaster’s take on the sex scandal immediately drew fire, especially from liberal groups.

“There is no evidence that Broadwell initiated the relationship and, even if she did, that doesn’t mean that he no responsibility for his decision to engage in extra-marital relations,” wrote left-wing news site Think Progress.

“Apparently Pat Robertson thinks men can’t control their bodies, but they have the divine right to control women’s. Huh.,” tweeted Daily Beat blogger Emily L. Hauser.

Jill Kelley made headlines this week after it emerged that she was the target of harassing emails from Paula Broadwell, a 40-year-old mother of two who was engaged in a months-long affair with David Petraeus.

She has called police four times over the past two days to complain about reporters outside her home. In one call, Jill Kelley said she was an honorary consul general, adding: “I don’t know if you want to get diplomatic protection.”

Jill Kelley regularly kept in touch with then-General Petraeus when he became commander of the Afghan war effort, the two exchanging near-daily emails and instant messages, two of his former staffers say.

But those messages were exchanged in accounts that his aides monitored as part of their duties and were not romantic in tone, the staffers said.

Jill Kelley notified a friend of hers who worked for the FBI of the emails, and he referred the case to a cyber crimes unit.

That agent was later banned from the FBI’s investigation into the source of the emails when officials discovered that he was sending shirtless photographs to Jill Kelley and seemed to become “obsessed” with the case, the Wall Street Journal reported.

The FBI investigated her claims and traced the emails to an account set up by Paula Broadwell. As they looked into the account, they found she had exchanged intimate emails with a private Gmail account.

Further investigation revealed it belonged to David Petraeus, who was using an alias.

Jill Kelley, 37, is a volunteer who organizes social events for military families in the Tampa area.

Her husband, Dr. Scott Kelley, is a highly sought-after surgeon who specializes in a rare type of minimally invasive surgery to cure cancer of the esophagus.

Jill Kelley was a medical student at one point, but put her studies on hold to have a baby, according to 2003 story in the St. Petersburg Times.

She often hosts the events at her million-dollar home located only a couple of miles from MacDill Air Force base, where Allen served from July 2008 to June 2011.

Jill Kelley’s twin sister Natalie Khawam also makes the most of the parties, becoming close with major players, including both David Petraeus and John Allen, who wrote letters on her behalf as she battled her ex-husband for custody of her son, ABC reported.

A senior official told the Associated Press that 20,000 to 30,000 pages of emails and other documents from John Allen’s communications with Jill Kelley between 2010 and 2012 are under review.

A friend of the couple said Scott Kelley would not have know about the vast number of emails being exchanged by his wife and General John Allen.

“Knowing Scott, there is no way he would have approved of Jill sending so many emails to another man,” said the friend.

“What husband would be happy to see his wife sending so many different messages to another man, even if he is overseas and serving his country?”

Another friend, who has known Jill Kelley for almost a decade, added: “This has come as a complete shock. You never know what goes on behind closed doors, but no one in her circle saw this coming.

“Jill was well known for throwing parties where the military attended and she reveled in her role as honorary ambassador but sending all those emails to a general is another thing.”

Her brother, David Khawam, has also revealed their fear that she will be branded the “other woman”.

Speaking to the Today show, David Khawam said: “This is something that is going to brand her for life.

“My sister, number one, is a mother. She has three kids and is extremely dedicated to those kids.

“Number two she is a wife. She is extremely dedicated to her husband and he to her. For her to have an affair with General Petraeus is ludicrous.”

He added that he expected his sister, who has hired the crisis management firm employed by Monica Lewinsky and the attorney who represented John Edwards earlier this year, to address reports about her involvement with two of the top US military chiefs.

It has been revealed that Paula Broadwell has taken refuge at her brother’s Washington D.C. home as she hides away from the fall-out of her affair with disgraced former CIA boss David Petraeus.

The 40-year-old mother-of-two is staying in the Petworth suburb of the capital as the scandal she set off by sending threatening emails to alleged love rival Jill Kelley blew up publicly on Friday – causing David Petraeus’ resignation.

This was confirmed this evening when the Associated Press released a photograph of Paula Broadwell standing in the kitchen wearing a pink top with a glass of red wine in hand looking like any other housewife on a weekday evening.

It was Paula Broadwell’s threatening emails to Jill Kelley, a Florida socialite who is a Petraeus family friend that led to the FBI’s discovery of the affair between the biographer-turned-mistress and the nation’s top spy-chief.

And in another jaw-dropping development it has been claimed that Paula Broadwell also sent emails to General John Allen under the pseudonym “KelleyPatrol” – calling the unpaid social liaison for the military a “seductress”, warning the general about becoming entangled in a relationship with her.

This in turn led to a dramatic twist when sources close to the internal investigation into the scandal said that the commander of U.S. Forces in Afghanistan General John Allen exchanged emails likened to “phone sex” with 37-year-old Jill Kelley.

General John Allen, who is married who two daughters and leads U.S. troops in Afghanistan denies any wrongdoing.

Officials claim his emails to Jill Kelley, who is also married with children, were simply friendly and not “inappropriate” or flirtatious.

However, sources have told Fox News that the emails between the pair were so explicit that they could be compared to “the equivalent of phone sex over email”.

Another official said that the Defense Secretary Leon Panetta would not have referred this matter to an internal investigator without being sure that he had to – such would be the effect on John Allen’s family and the U.S. war effort.

“This was a serious enough matter that those who examined the emails thought it should be referred to the secretary of defense, and the secretary made the decision to turn it over to the inspector general,” the official said to Fox News.

“He would not have thrust this into the limelight without good cause.”

Sources are reviewing between 20,000 to 30,000 pages of emails between Jill Kelley and General John Allen which date from between 2010 to 2012.

The investigation into the burgeoning sex scandal is ongoing – on Monday evening FBI agents searched Paula Broadwell’s Charlotte, North Carolina home and left with electronic equipment.

And further deepening the mire is news that the FBI agent who began the investigation into David Petraeus was taken off the case after it was found that he sent shirtless pictures of himself to Jill Kelley.

He is facing an internal investigation.

Paula Broadwell sent an anonymous email to General John Allen about Florida socialite Jill Kelley, as she suspected Kelley of having a romantic relationship with David Petraeus as well.

The cyber love triangle expanded as it was revealed today that John Allen was electronically connected with Paula Broadwell after he received an email from one of her dummy accounts. He then went on to tell Jill Kelley, a married mom that he denies having an affair with, who in turn reported the emails to the FBI.

Because of their respective involvement in the unfolding case, the Pentagon has requested access to the 20,000-30,000 pages of communications between John Allen, the commander of U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan, and Jill Kelley.

In light of the extra marital affair between Paula Broadwell and David Petraeus, Pentagon spokesmen have been quick to dismiss ideas of a similar affair between John Allen and Jill Kelley though their confirmation of some “inappropriate communication” among those thousands of pages of emails has sparked further curiosity about the nature of their relationship.

One divulged example reported in The Washington Post was John Allen’s use of the word “sweetheart” in referring to married Jill Kelley, but a senior Pentagon official said that proves nothing as the 58-year-old general is from Virginia and the word is used in the south as a platonic phrase and not one demonstrating a romantic relationship.

Jill Kelley runs in the same social circle as both David Petraeus and John Allen as she serves as an unpaid social liaison for the military and often hosts events at her million-dollar home located only a couple of miles from MacDill Air Force base. John Allen served there from July 2008 to June 2011.

John Allen, a four-star Marine general, succeeded David Petraeus as the top American commander in Afghanistan in July 2011.

Paula Broadwell reportedly sent the emails from dummy accounts she had set up to Jill Kelley, FoxNews.com reported.

Spooked by the bullying in her inbox, Jill Kelley notified the FBI.

A government official told the New York Post that the emails contained such language as: “I know what you did”, “back off” and “stay away from my guy”.

What followed was an intense FBI probe in which Paula Broadwell and David Petraeus – both married with two children – admitted to investigators that they had engaged in on-the-side sexual trysts.

The emails were not the first time Paula Broadwell had raised red flags while behind a computer.

Advisers to David Petraeus had become suspicious Paula Broadwell due to her playful Facebook status updates they claim disclosed sensitive details about military operations in Afghanistan.

An anonymous Wikipedia editor may have tried to reveal General David Petraeus’s extramarital affair with his biographer Paula Broadwell back in January this year.

In January, Paula Broadwell appeared on the Daily Show to pitch her book about the CIA director titled All In.

The day after Wikipedia editor Vanobamo created a page for the author, which is common practice on the user-contributed online encyclopedia.

But less than an hour later an anonymous editor logged on to the website and wrote: “Petraeus is reportedly one of her many conquests.”

It was the anonymous user’s first and only Wikipedia edit, reports Gawker.

Their post, with the IP address 64.101.72.113, was deleted within an hour by editor Dsutton, who flagged it as “libel/vandalism”.

At the time news of their affair had not surfaced and Wikipedia reserves the right to delete libelous material posted on the website.

But now in hindsight, is unknown if Paula Broadwell’s Wikipedia outing was speculation by a Daily Show viewer, or if the poster had secret knowledge of David Petraeus cheating on Holly his wife of 37 years.

Since news of the posting was released, several attempts have been made to track the IP address and determine the poster.

An IP address is an address assigned to every computer and other devices are logged onto the Internet to uniquely define them.

When Gawker ran it through the American Registry for Internet Numbers, they failed to come up with a name, but the result showed a company called Cisco Systems, Inc.

They explained that this means “Cisco, the tech giant based in San Jose, was given that IP address, but anyone could have been using it, and it could have been ported to another location around the world”.

Before last Friday Paula Broadwell’s Wikipedia page was quite bare, but then former CIA director David Petraeus resigned.

The FBI started probing emails sent by Paula Broadwell to Jill Kelley, a family friend of David Petraeus, in May 2012, and soon discovered that she had been in a romantic relationship with the decorated former general.

September 6, 2011:

David Petraeus was unanimously appointed to be the head of the Central Intelligence Agency after spending over 37 years in the military.

November 2011:

David Petraeus allegedly began his affair with Paula Broadwell, a former Army reservist and doctoral researcher who was writing a biography of Petraeus.

May 2012:

The FBI first officially knew that Paula Broadwall was sending threatening emails to Jill Kelley, a family friend of David Petraeus. There is no indication that Jill Kelley had any sort of romantic affair with David Petraeus, but the threatening nature of the emails from Paula Broadwell suggest that she felt threatened in some way by Jill Kelley’s close connection to David Petraeus.

End of Summer 2012:

Paula Broadwall’s affair with David Petraeus is thought to have formally ended in July, though it was not until the end of the summer that the FBI realized it was David Petraeus emailing Paula Broadwall because he had been using a Gmail account established under a pseudonym for their personal communications, some of which was sexually explicit in nature.

At an unspecified date at the end of the summer, the FBI investigators notified the Attorney General’s office – and Attorney General Eric Holder himself – because they needed the authority to interview Paula Broadwall and David Petraeus. In telling the AG, investigators were clear that they were looking into the possibility of pressing criminal charges against Paula Broadwell for either her threats against Jill Kelley or any illegal action that stemmed from the communication with David Petraeus.

September 2012:

Paula Broadwell was first interviewed at some point in September, when she admitted to the affair and turned over her computer.

October 2012:

In mid-October, Republican Representative David Reichert was told of a national security investigation involving David Petraeus by an unidentified FBI informant. David Reichert then forwarded that tip to Eric Cantor, the House Majority leader and the one of the most powerful Republicans in the country, on October 27.
The week before the Election, late October 2012:

From there, the circle began to widen as David Petraeus himself was interviewed the week before the Election, during which he admitted the affair but said that he was not the one to give Paula Broadwall the classified documents that investigators found on her computer.

She echoed that statement during her second interview with investigators on November 2. FBI and justice department officials then discussed their findings for three days, deciding that they did not have sufficient evidence to charge either Paula Broadwall or David Petraeus on a criminal level.
Election Day, November 6, 2012:

At 5:00 p.m. on Election Day, the FBI told Director of National Intelligence James Clapper about their investigation, and he waited until Wednesday evening to tell White House officials that David Petraeus was considering resigning.

Thursday November 8, 2012:

It was not until Thursday that President Barack Obama was informed, and he met with David Petraeus that day but did not immediately accept his resignation, waiting until Friday to let the disgraced General quit.

In the hours before David Petraeus’ public announcement on Friday, the circle drastically widened and Senator Dianne Feinstein, head of the Senate Intelligence Committee learned of the plan.

Dianne Feinstein contacted David Petraeus and asked him whether he thought it was truly necessary for him to leave his post. Citing his belief in leadership coming from the top-down, he said it was the best thing for him to do.

US Attorney General Eric Holder is under fire as questions emerge over why he did not tell President Barack Obama that David Petraeus was having an affair with his biographer Paula Broadwell.

Eric Holder was told by the FBI that they were investigating the relationship between the director of the CIA and Paula Broadwell in late summer, but appears not to have shared the information with anyone else.

Barack Obama did not find out about the scandal until Wednesday – just two days before David Petraeus resigned – even though multiple senior politicians had apparently been aware of it for months.

The revelation that Eric Holder knew about David Petraeus’ infidelity could increase pressure on Barack Obama to replace him when he puts together his Cabinet for the next four years.

The FBI started probing emails sent by Paula Broadwell to Jill Kelley, a family friend of David Petraeus, in May 2012, and soon discovered that she had been in a romantic relationship with the decorated former general.

Towards the end of the summer, the FBI contacted Eric Holder’s office in order to seek the authority to interview Paula Broadwell and David Petraeus.

The Attorney General, a longtime ally of Barack Obama, must have known about the affair from this point, but did not tell the President about it despite the possibility it could end the career of David Petraeus, one of the most respected soldiers of his generation.

Conservatives – who have long opposed Eric Holder over his role in the botched “Fast and Furious” gun-running investigation – attacked the Attorney General over his silence.

“The idea that the White House didn’t learn of this potential problem until Election Day, I just find incomprehensible,” John Bolton, former ambassador to the UN, told Fox News.

“Did the Attorney General sit on this information for two months?”

Republican congressman Jason Chaffetz added: “Notification should have also gone to the President – immediately.”

Paula Broadwell, the woman who had an affair with David Petraeus, denied she was in love with him in a bizarre interview with Arthur Kade she gave in the midst of their fling.

Speaking in an interview while promoting her book in February, Paula Broadwell said without prompting: “I am not in love with David Petraeus,” in what was something of a Freudian slip.

By that stage their affair was around five months having started when David Petraeus became head of the CIA in September last year. It ended around July, according to reports.

In the interview Paula Broadwell, who is married with two young sons, revealed that she had sent David Petraeus’ wife Holly a copy of her fawning biography of her husband – and claimed that she loved it.

Paula Broadwell, 40, also revealed for the first time the extent of the access that he gave her, including private papers going back 30 years.

The disclosure could reignite the debate about what information she was given access to.

If David Petraeus, 60, was prepared to show Paula Broadwell his intimate correspondence with mentors then he may have allowed her to see classified information too.

Controversially, Paula Broadwell even claims that it was David Petraeus’ idea, and not hers, to turn her dissertation project on military leadership into the book it became: All In: The Education Of General David Petraeus.

The interview was carried out by Arthur Kade, a former financial advisor turned humanitarian who also conducts celebrity interviews.

Arthur Kade and Paula Broadwell sit in front of an open fire for 13 minutes during which she speaks at length about the book.

Paula Broadwell says: “I conducted over 700 interviews, you can appreciate how time consuming that is, and to transcribe then and I was trying to do this all on my own as a dissertation project.

“But when I realized the opportunity I had to present this portrait of strategic leadership – you know it’s not a hagiography, I’m not in love with David Petraeus, but I think he does present a terrific role model for young people, for executives, for men and women.

“There’s a great role model there who is values oriented, who speaks the truth to power, who shows great example of taking initiative and other qualities we should be all be interested in ourselves and promoting in others.”

Paula Broadwell said that she had presented David Petraeus with a copy of her book but added that “he says he hasn’t read it”.

She said: “I sent him and his wife a copy and I know his wife, Holly Petraeus, read it and she had great things to say.

“He’s tracking how the book is being received and as an academic mentor of mine, if you will, he’s proud of me.”

Paula Broadwell and David Petraeus first met in 2006 when she asked him if he could be a case study in her Harvard dissertation on military leadership.

He agreed, gave her a business card and she made multiple visits to Afghanistan to interview him – before romance finally flourished.

Turning to their relationship, Paula Broadwell said in the interview: “Our rapport increased and he decided to make it more of an official relationship, treating me like a biographer.

“I was able to look through correspondence he exchange with his mentors over three decades as a young captain and major and I was able to trace how he was thinking, the evolution of his thought about counterinsurgency, about how forces train and equip and fight and on leadership.

“I was particularly interested in leadership.”

The resignation of David Petraeus, sparked by the revelation that the former general was having an affair with biographer Paula Broadwell, is the biggest sex scandal to hit Washington since Bill Clinton was revealed to have had “sexual relations” with Monica Lewinsky.

And the parallels between the two events are growing stronger as it has been revealed that both mistress Paula Broadwell and whistleblower Jill Kelley who exposed them have hired legal advisers who previously worked with Monica Lewinsky.

Jill Kelley, the Florida housewife who was dragged in to the scandal when she started receiving abusive emails from an anonymous source, has hired Monica Lewinsky’s crisis manager to help her deal with the publicity she is facing after the resignation of the former CIA director.

And Paula Broadwell, who carried out an affair with David Petraeus over several months after writing his biography, is being represented by an attorney from the firm which once represented Monica Lewinsky.

Jill Kelley has hired Abbe Lowell, the attorney who defended John Edwards earlier this year, and Judy Smith, the crisis manager who represented Monica Lewinsky after her trysts with President Bill Clinton.

Paula Broadwell’s lawyer is the Washington-based Robert F. Muse, according to ABC News, a partner at Stein, Mitchell, Muse & Cipollone, which specializes in white-collar crime.

Another of the firm’s partners is Jacob A. Stein, who was counsel to Monica Lewinsky during Bill Clinton’s impeachment hearings in 1998.

Jill Kelley, Florida socialite at the centre of the David Petraeus sex scandal, has spoken for the first time and said she is an “innocent victim”.

Jill Kelley said: “I’ve done nothing wrong. I am the victim here. But it still feels awful.”

She has been called “the other woman” in the affair leading to speculation she was romantically involved with the former CIA chief.

Jill Kelley tipped off FBI agents about the affair when she handed over a series of anonymous emails sent by Paula Broadwell warning her to stay away from David Petraeus in the summer.

The 37-year-old spoke with her brother, a lawyer, as her name first became linked to the resignation of David Petraeus.

David Khawan told the Washington Post his sister telephoned him on Sunday and told him to switch on the TV because her name was all over news broadcasts.

He said his sister told him she was totally innocent and was not the “other woman” in David Petraeus’s life.

David Khawan is quoted as saying his sister said: “I’ve done nothing wrong. I am the victim here. But it still feels awful.”

Friends of Jill Kelley, a vivacious Lebanese-born mother of three known for her love of expensive designer dresses, said that she is devoted to her family and scoffed at suggestions that she was romantically involved with David Petraeus.

“This other woman obviously read all the signs wrong,” said a friend who knows Jill Kelley from their children’s private school.

“Jill is very attractive and can be touchy-feely. That’s just the way she is and there is nothing else.”

Jill Kelley, a well known figure on the social scene in her hometown of Tampa, Florida, has hired a crisis management firm and top lawyer since being linked to the scandal.

This has led to speculation that further damaging details could be revealed in the fall out from David Petraeus’s resignation.

Sources have revealed that the emails she received from Paula Broadwell were “kind of cat-fight stuff”.

Jill Kelley went to the FBI with the emails – and triggered the investigation that led to the downfall of David Petraeus and his shock resignation as CIA chief.

The source told The Daily Beast the emails were: “More like, <<Who do you think you are? … You parade around the base … You need to take it down a notch.>>”

The Wall Street Journal reported that in one of the emails Paula Broadwell asked Jill Kelley if her husband was aware of her actions.

Another accused Jill Kelley of touching David Petraeus provocatively under a table.

The source also said Jill Kelley would often accompany David Petraeus’s wife Holly on shopping trips to the International Mall in Tampa.

Jill Kelley, whose husband is a top cancer surgeon, has dodged questions from the media.

Before leaving her home she called police to the $1.3 million mansion to ask media to respect her privacy.

Jill Kelley left the home in a silver Mercedes with the registration plate “Honorary Consul” – a nod to her work as an unpaid liaison officer for the military headquarters at MacDill Airforce Base.

It was during David Petraeus’s two years in Tampa at the CENTCOM headquarters that he became friends with Jill Kelley and her husband Scott.

The friendship continued after the general left Tampa with the Kelley’s visiting the Petraeus’s home in Washington DC.

Dr. Scott Broadwell’s romantic plans he had organized to celebrate his wife Paula’s 40th birthday were abruptly shattered on Friday by the revelation that she had been having a relationship with general David Petraeus.

Paula and Scott Broadwell were enjoying a two-day break at the Middleton Inn in Little Washington, Virginia when news of the scandal broke, leading to David Petraeus stepping down as CIA director.

Sources told the Washingtonian.com that the couple had enjoyed “strenuous” bike rides, champagne and cozy dinners since arriving at the luxury inn on Thursday evening.

The Broadwells took the Ascot Room at the Manor House which is available for $295 – $475 a night. It boasts a working fireplace, four-poster bed and private marble bath.

According to sources, Dr. Scott Broadwell, a radiologist, had arranged for Champagne and a bouquet of roses for his wife’s milestone birthday.

There is plenty to do in the idyllic Blue Ridge Mountain region. Along with breathtaking scenery, perfect for hiking and bike rides, the town of Little Washington – just 70 miles from D.C. – boasts fine dining. wineries and artisan boutiques.

The couple reportedly joined other guests at the Inn for breakfast – but by the time they returned from a romantic dinner on Friday evening, they were described to the magazine as “not being in very good moods”.

Scott and Paula Broadwell left abruptly on Saturday morning and were allegedly on their way to D.C. A party had also been planned for Paula Broadwell’s birthday on Saturday night – but it was cancelled.

The Broadwells have two young sons and live in suburban Charlotte, North Carolina. The family’s upmarket home has been empty since the weekend with two silver cars parked in the brick garage.

Paula Broadwell moved to Charlotte, more than three years ago with her doctor husband and their two young sons.

FBI agents are searching the Charlotte, North Carolina home of Paula Broadwell, whose affair with retired general David Petraeus led to his resignation as director of the Central Intelligence Agency.

Agents reportedly arrived at Paula Broadwell’s home at about 10 p.m. on Monday carrying a load of boxes. Agents appeared to be rummaging through every room of the house, taking pictures and filling boxes with various items from inside, according to reporters on the scene.

The FBI has declined to comment on the specific reason for the agents’ late-night search of Paula Broadwell’s home, which was still underway after midnight.

The search is likely related to an ongoing criminal investigation into harassing emails sent from email accounts linked to Paula Broadwell, a 40-year-old mother of two.

Paula Broadwell sent the emails to 37-year-old Jill Kelley of Tampa, Florida, in which she cryptically warned her to stay away from David Petraeus.

Paula Broadwell, who wrote a biography on David Petraeus, was involved in an affair with the four-star general at the time and she believed that Jill Kelley was a potential love rival.

Jill Kelley, a housewife who organizes social events for military personnel, has said that she and David Petraeus were only acquaintances.

The FBI conducted an investigation into the emails and were shocked to learn how much access that Paula Broadwell appeared to have to David Petraeus, officials said. The federal agency eventually determined that no national security secrets had been breached by the relationship, however they did find classified materials on Paula Broadwell’s computer.

A colleague of former CIA director David Petraeus offers some revealing details on how Paula Broadwell “got her claws into him”.

The unidentified senior military source told Business Insider that David Petraeus’s biographer, Paula Broadwell, relentlessly followed the married general to private events and “went from someone very likeable to a shameless self-promoting prom queen” in the years she spent profiling him for her book, All In.

“The timing of the rumors of the administration throwing him under the bus after the election is suspect, but in the end I believe she got her claws – so to speak – in him,” that source said.

“He had enough honor to know that a cover-up is much worse than a public admission.

“As a result, I think he can recover and continue to be a player on the national stage, but she’s toast. Her reputation is unrecoverable, in my opinion.”

David Petraeus was caught by investigators after exchanging sexually explicit emails with his 40-year-old mistress and bombarding her with thousands of messages even after she had broken off the affair.

The racy communications between the four-star general and Paula Broadwell were uncovered when the FBI began an investigation after suspecting corruption between the pair.

David Petraeus resigned on Friday after confessing to cheating on his wife of 37 years, Holly.

He issued a statement acknowledging the affair after President Barack Obama accepted his resignation, which was announced by the CIA soon after.

“After being married for over 37 years, I showed extremely poor judgment by engaging in an extramarital affair,” he said in the statement.

“Such behavior is unacceptable, both as a husband and as the leader of an organization such as ours. This afternoon, the president graciously accepted my resignation.”

After being sworn in as CIA Director on September 6th, 2011, Paula Broadwell broke up with David Petraeus, but he continued to pursue her, sending her thousands of emails over the last few months – raising questions about his judgement which led in part to his resignation.

Paula Broadwell, who spent three years doing researching for her book, had extensive access to David Petraeus in Afghanistan. Yet sources told NBC it is unlikely she will face criminal charges after the alleged hacking, stressing that David Petraeus himself is under no investigation.

Sources at the FBI said that the investigation of the former CIA boss began in spring of this year and that federal agents pored over his emails from that point and from when he was stationed in Afghanistan between July 4th 2010 and July 18th 2011.

David Petraeus met Paula Broadwell in 2006 at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government as she was finishing up her Master’s degree there.

Jon Stewart’s interview with Paula Broadwell, David Petraeus’ mistress, on The Daily Show in January was more than a little awkward.

David Petraeus stepped down Friday after confessing to cheating on his wife of 37 years, Holly – calling his behavior “unacceptable” for a senior administration official.

But before all that, back in January, biographer-turned-mistress Paula Broadwell appeared on the show to pitch her book All In.

About three and a half minutes into the clip, Jon Stewart and Paula Broadwell talk about how the two got chummy while in Afghanistan.

While embedded, said Paula Broadwell, she and David Petraeus would go running in the mountainous Afghanistan capital of Kabul while interviewing Petreaus for her book.

But it started in Washington, D.C.

“I was among the students invited by the school to meet with the general at a dinner afterward, because of my military background,” she explained.

“I introduced myself to then–Lieutenant General Petraeus and told him about my research interests; he gave me his card and offered to put me in touch with other researchers and service members working on the same issues.”

Paula Broadwell added that this was not a one-off as he often “does a lot of mentoring”.

As she pursued her PhD in public policy in 2008, Paula Broadwell contacted David Petraeus to ask if she could interview him and they kept in touch via email.

“A few months into my research, General Petraeus, who was then leading Central Command, invited me to go for a run with him and his team along the Potomac River during one of his visits to Washington,” she wrote.

“I figured I could interview him while we ran.”

She explained that, after earning varsity letters in cross-country and indoor and outdoor track, she wanted to test him to see if he could keep up with her as she interviewed him.

“Instead it became a test for me,” Paula Broadwell she said.

“As we talked during the run from the Pentagon to the Washington Monument and back, Petraeus progressively increased the pace until the talk turned to heavy breathing and we reached a six-minute-per-mile pace. It was a signature Petraeus move.”

Paula Broadwell appeared in January on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart to promote David Petraeus biography

She insisted that these mile-long runs together were nothing out of the ordinary.

“This is a typical mechanism for him to get to know young people,” she said.

“He’s done it throughout his life. That was the foundation of our relationship.”

Jon Stewart then asks if other people in his embed “resent [David Petraeus’] success” and reputation.

“He realizes he’s seen as an extremely ambitious individual. You want somebody who’s ambitious and driven, and who has a will to win. … He goes all-in to what he does.”

Apparently, Paula Broadwell, 40, goes “all in”, too.

Ambition is also second-nature to Paula Broadwell, who practically strives out loud.

According to her book, Paula Broadwell received a degree in political geography and systems engineering from West Point, where she was ranked No. 1 over all in fitness in her class. In high school, she was valedictorian and homecoming queen. She’s even been model for a machine gun manufacturer, reported The New York Times.

“I was driven when I was younger,” Paula Broadwell was quoted as saying on her official Web site, which was taken down Friday.

“Driven at West Point where it was much more competitive in that women were competing with men on many levels, and I was driven in the military and at Harvard, both competitive environments.

“But now, as a working mother of two, I realize it is more difficult to compete in certain areas. I think it is important for working moms to recognize that family is the most important.”

In her biography on the Penguin Speakers Bureau Web site says that she is a research associate at Harvard’s Center for Public Leadership and a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of War Studies at King’s College London. She received a master’s in public administration from Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government.

A self-described “soccer mom” and an Ironman triathlete, Paula Broadwell became a fixture on the Washington media scene after the publication of her book about David Petraeus. In a Twitter message this summer, she bragged about appearing on a panel at the Aspen Institute, a policy group.

“Heading 2 @AspenInstitute 4 the Security Forum tomorrow! Panel (media & terrorism) followed by a 1v1 run with Lance Armstrong,” she wrote.

“Fired up!”

At six minutes into the chat, Paula Broadwell brings up her husband, Dr. Scott Broadwell, when discussing whether or not David Petreaus would run for president.

“My husband wants me to say he is, because it’ll sell more books,” she says.

“I’m sorry, honey! I couldn’t do it!”

“That was the most awesome sellout I’ve ever seen in my life,” Jon Stewart says.

“So integrity’s running in the whole family, I guess.”

Jon Stewart summed up Paula Broadwell’s book by saying: “I would say the real controversy here is, is he awesome or incredibly awesome?”

A short time later, according to The New York Times, Paula Broadwell challenged Jon Stewart to a push-up contest, which she won handily. Jon Stewart had to pay $1,000 to a veterans’ support group for each push-up she did beyond his total. Paula Broadwell said that he wrote a check for $20,000 on the spot.
