Oregon shooting: Jared Michael Padgett identified as Reynolds High School gunman
A gunman shot dead a 14-year-old student at the Reynolds High School in Oregon before killing himself, police have said.
Oregon police on Wednesday identified the gunman in the Reynolds High School shooting as Jared Michael Padgett, a 15-year-old freshman.
They said he had no apparent connection to the fellow freshman he shot and killed before wounding a teacher and then eventually turning the gun on himself.
Jared Michael Padgett arrived on the school bus on Tuesday, carrying a guitar case and a large duffel bag, Troutdale Police Chief Scott Anderson said at a press conference. One of those held an AR-15 rifle that the teen brought from home, the sheriff said.
“The student has died. I’m very, very sorry for the family,” Scott Anderson said.
Police arrived after shots were reported as classes started on Tuesday morning, when the suspect opened fire with a rifle.
The victim, killed in the boys’ locker room in a detached building holding the school’s gymnasium, was identified by authorities as Emilio Hoffman.
An athletics instructor was also grazed by a bullet but was able to initiate a school lockdown, which police say may have saved lives.
The person with the gun was found dead in a separate bathroom, police said.
Students were seen being led from the high school with their hands on their heads, and there were emotional reunions with parents outside.
During the evacuation another person was found to be armed with a gun and taken into custody. Scott Anderson said that was unrelated to the shooting.
