Tom Cruise has decided to drop the defamation lawsuit against In Touch and Life & Style magazines after reaching a settlement of $50 million.
Tom Cruise, 50, launched legal action against owners at Bauer Media Group in November over the magazines’ 2012 suggestions that he had “abandoned” his daughter Suri following his divorce from actress Katie Holmes last year.
At the time of the filing, his attorney Bert Fields said: “Tom doesn’t go around suing people. He’s not a litigious guy. But when these sleaze peddlers try to make money with disgusting lies about his relationship with his child, you bet he’s going to sue.”
Tom Cruise has decided to drop the defamation lawsuit against In Touch and Life & Style magazines after reaching a settlement of $50 million
Tom Cruise’s lengthy deposition made waves as personal details about his private life were revealed, including his admission that his devotion to Scientology had been “one of” the reasons behind his split from Katie Holmes.
The case was set to go to trial, but Tom Cruise has since managed to resolve the dispute and papers for a lawsuit dismissal were filed in California federal court on Friday.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the terms of the settlement are confidential, although each party will be responsible for its own legal costs.
Tom Cruise has strongly dismissed claims he has “abandoned” his daughter Suri following his divorce from actress Katie Holmes as “patently false”.
“I have in no way cut Suri out of my life,” Tom Cruise said in a declaration filed on Tuesday in a $50 million defamation case against magazine publisher Bauer.
Tom Cruise, 51, is suing Bauer over two 2012 tabloid stories that claimed he was absent from his 7-year-old daughter’s life.
Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes divorced in June last year after six years of marriage.
The legal action relates to stories in Life & Style and In Touch magazines that claimed overseas film shoots had stopped Tom Cruise being a constant presence in Suri’s life.

In documents made public by Radar Online, Tom Cruise acknowledged he was “a professional actor in motion pictures” whose job involved “extended periods of time in various parts of the world”.
However, Tom Cruise insisted he and his daughter remained “extremely close” and had a “wonderful relationship and cheerful phone calls”.
“While I’m sure my daughter misses me when I am not with her (as I miss her), she is a very happy child,” Tom Cruise’s statement read.
Suri, he continued, “has never indicated, in words or substance, that she has ever felt abandoned by me”.
Tom Cruise’s lawyers are asking a judge to order Bauer to declare it did not have any sources to support its contentions.
Bauer’s lawyers have argued the star’s motion should be rejected, referring to statements from confidential sources that allegedly support its claims.

Katie Holmes and Bobbi Brown are teaming up to launch Bobbi & Katie, a palette for women with little time for an extensive beauty regime.
Katie Holmes, 34, has been the face of make-up brand Bobbi Brown since September.
Bobbi & Katie make-up line will feature eye shadows, Pot Rouges and eye pencils in nudes and natural colors for busy women who want a “quick fix”.
“Nobody wants to look like they’ve been getting ready for hours,” Katie Holmes told WWD.
“It’s all about the effortless chic.”
The collection will feature a $65 brush set, a set of eight eye shadows for $68, two Pot Rouges and an eye pencil.
The colors in the palette were apparently inspired by an old pink and brown journal owned by Katie Holmes.

“It felt very girly, but at the same time masculine in a way,” Katie Holmes explained, adding that Bobbi Brown was “very open” to using the journal as inspiration for the make-up and packaging.
Katie Holmes and Bobbi Brown also took cues from their own busy lifestyles, aiming to create an easy collection for women with similar schedules.
“I’m busy, Bobbi’s busy,” said Katie Holmes, adding: “I don’t know a woman who isn’t busy, and you need that quick fix.”
Katie Holmes explained that women can apply the cosmetics “in the back of a cab. . . in your bathroom at home. . . [or] in the parking lot at your child’s soccer game”.
One of the more effortlessly chic items in the line is the Pot Rouge, which acts as a two-in-one product for cheeks and lips.
“It feels like it’s a little secret and it has all of your tricks inside,” the actress said of the collection.
“You can quickly get yourself looking the best you could look and then put it back into your bag.
“It makes you feel good, and we all want to feel good,” she added.
Katie Holmes and Bobbi Brown first began working together last September, when the actress was tapped as the face of the make-up brand.
The experience was apparently a positive one, since Katie Holmes and Bobbi Brown are now calling themselves business partners.
While Katie Holmes gushed that Bobbi Brown is “so creative and so smart”, the make-up artist said of the actress: “She really has a feel for what women want and need. She has a great eye for color and design.”
This isn’t Katie Holmes’ first foray into fashion; in January, the actress signed on as the spokesman for eco-conscious haircare brand Alterna.
The Bobbi & Katie make-up collection will launch in select stores in September, and will be followed by a skincare line.

As she was seen getting into her chauffeured car to head to the soiree, her halterneck gown displayed her lithe frame.

But as she attended the Met Ball on Monday night she seemingly decided to think outside of the box.

However, Katie Holmes’ choice of gown for the Punk: Chaos to Couture themed bash could only be described as a fashion faux pas.
The actress wore a white Francisco Costa gown, which was reminiscent of toilet paper as she glided down the red carpet.
The dress in question was a halterneck cut, showing off her back and shoulders.
Katie Holmes teamed the ensemble with a pair of white sky high stilettos that were a little too matchy matchy.
She also wore giant diamond earrings in her ears and stuck with the punk theme by styling her hair into a quiff and applying smokey eye make-up to her lids.

Tom Cruise has made his first comments about his divorce from Katie Holmes last year during an interview with a German television.
Tom Cruise, 50, admitted: “I did not expect that.”
The actor added: “Life is a challenge. You are 50 and you think you have everything in order and suddenly it hits you, that’s what life is all about.”

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, 34, split last June just five days before the actor’s 50th birthday.
He said it gave him “an incredible amount of time to reflect” as he celebrated the milestone.
Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes entered negotiations almost straight away and last month a settlement was agreed with Katie being given primary custody of their 6-year-old daughter, Suri, and Tom getting extensive visitation rights.
Neither couple have ever given a reason for the split but rumors persist Katie Holmes was unhappy with the control the religion Scientology had over the family.
Tom Cruise said getting stuck into work helped him get over the heartbreaking split.
“Life is like a tragic comedy, you need a sense of humor,” he said.
The actor also spoke about doing his own action stunts in his latest $120 million sci-fi blockbuster Oblivion.
“I have done white water rafting, I dipped, with the snowmobile on the glaciers, drove around and climbed mountains.”
Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes married in a lavish ceremony in Italy in November 2006 after a starting a very public whirlwind romance in April 2005.

Katie Holmes’ play Dead Accounts is to close on January 6th, after less than six weeks on Broadway.
Theresa Rebeck’s drama, which also stars Norbert Leo Butz as Katie Holmes’ brother, had been scheduled to run until February 24th.
The show opened to poor reviews on November 29th and will have had 27 previews and 44 performances when it closes.
It marked Katie Holmes’ first major acting role since her divorce from Tom Cruise earlier this year.
Directed by Tony Award-winner Jack O’Brien, Dead Accounts tells the story of a prodigal son who returns home to Cincinnati from New York City.
Katie Holmes’ play Dead Accounts is to close on January 6th, after less than six weeks on Broadway
Theresa Rebeck has created several well-received plays including Mauritius and Seminar – her last on Broadway – which had 191 performances and 26 previews before it ended.
According to the New York Times, for the week ending December 23rd, Dead Accounts had made just under 25% of its potential gross at the Music Box Theatre.
Katie Holmes, who became a star in the teen soap opera Dawson’s Creek, made her Broadway debut in the 2008 production of Arthur Miller’s All My Sons.
The actress was married to Tom Cruise from 2006 until this year.
Meanwhile, respected actors Jack Klugman and Charles Durning are being honored by the theatre community with the dimming of Broadway’s lights.
On Thursday, the marquees at all Broadway theatres were darkened for one minute at 20:00 EST in memory of Charles Durning, who died on Monday aged 89.
Charles Durning amassed several important Broadway credits, including playing Big Daddy in a 1990 revival of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, and opposite George C. Scott in Inherit the Wind in 1996.
On Friday, the 40 Broadway marquees will go dark at 20:00 EST in memory of Jack Klugman, 90, who also died on Monday.
Jack Klugman’s Broadway roles included parts in I’m Not Rappapor and The Sunshine Boys. He was also nominated for a Tony Award in 1960 for Gypsy.
Katie Holmes has cottoned onto the craze, jumping on the same bandwagon as Jessica Alba and Jay-Z, and even Rihanna who sampled the London Underground.
Katie Holmes was seen riding the New York subway on Wednesday, going incognito with her hair scraped back into a ponytail, opting to go make-up free beneath large sunglasses.
She also seemed to be prepping for winter, wearing a knitted cream sweater and dark blue jeans, carrying an oversized leather bag and the signature pose of a commuter – keeping her head buried
Using public transport is a stark change from her former life as a Cruise, when she relied not only on chauffeur-driven cars, but also on exclusive A-list travel methods of helicopter ferrying.
Katie Holmes rides the subway
It’s almost as if Katie Holmes’ ride on the subway was a metaphorical two fingers up at ex-husband Tom Cruise.
On Tuesday, Katie Holmes was seen with daughter Suri, arriving home from school by foot instead of a lift from a personal driver.
The six-year-old started at the elite Avenues school in New York last month.
Katie Holmes has become the first ever face of Bobbi Brown Cosmetics.
Katie Holmes, 33, who recently divorced husband Tom Cruise after five years of marriage, has signed a deal with the beauty firm which will see her act as both muse and collaborator.
Bobbi Brown told WWD: “We weren’t looking for a celebrity, just a cool, amazing woman who would fit with our brand. And she’s just ridiculously naturally beautiful.”
Katie Holmes, who favors a bare-faced, almost no-make-up look, is a perfect fit for the cosmetics company, which also shares a natural aesthetic.
According to Bobbi Brown executives, as well as being the first celebrity face of the 21-year-old brand, Katie Holmes name will appear on a capsule collection of fall 2013 cosmetics.

She told WWD: “This is my first foray into beauty products and the evolution of a look.
“You want the hair and makeup to support the woman, just like you want the clothes to support the woman. You don’t want to lose the woman. That’s how Jeanne and I design.”
The news comes as the actress and designer prepares to stage the first-ever Fashion Week show for her label, Holmes & Yang.
Katie Holmes, who founded the line with stylist Jeanne Yang, will join the likes of Diane Von Furstenberg and Donna Karan at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week at Lincoln Center on Sunday.
And by all accounts, the success of the show, and the fashion press verdicts, will mean a lot to her.
Katie Holmes explained: “When you go in and you show your clothing, you think that they’re going to buy the whole collection. And when they don’t, you’re like, <<What do you mean? It all goes together. So what do we do with this?>>.
“So that was new, but I think that’s kind of a life thing – <<What, you don’t want all of me?>>”
The event will take place on the same day as Victoria Beckham, putting the two celebrities – and one-time friends – head-to-head.
The Holmes & Yang pieces, which she described as “just nice, well-made luxury items that highlight the woman wearing them”, range in price from $700 to $3000.
“We use a lot of silks and leathers and suedes,” she added, as if by way of explanation.
The Holmes & Yang first formal New York Fashion Week presentation and the Bobbi Brown beauty campaign together indicate that Katie Holmes is carving a sophisticated new image for herself, in the wake of her divorce.
Her acting career has not been completely sidelined, however.
Katie Holmes is set to star in a Broadway play, Dead Accounts, from November, and has two movies in the pipeline for next year.
The Church of Scientology was responsible for “turning Tom Cruise’s children against their mother”, his ex-wife Nicole Kidman, according to new reports.
The claims were made in an excerpt from a controversial article about Scientology which is due to be published in Vanity Fair.
The allegations have been strongly rejected by a Scientology spokesman, which labelled the article “hogwash”.
The new report, published in Us Magazine, claims the home-schooled children, Bella and Connor Cruise, were sent on a course to teach them to recognize “suppressive persons”, such as their adoptive mother.
The article includes an interview with John Brousseau, who was a Scientologist for 32 years and is a former brother-in-law to the church leader David Miscavige.
Us Magazine claims that Bella and Connor Cruise were sent on a course to teach them to recognize “suppressive persons”, such as their adoptive mother Nicole Kidman
John Brousseau told the magazine: “They took a course, PTS/SP, Potential Trouble Source/Suppressive Person, for persons connected in their lives who are an SP.”
And he added: “[Bella and Connor] whispered to me, <<JB, Nicole is an SP! Our mom’s an SP – we hate going and seeing her>>.”
Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise divorced in 2001. During their marriage they adopted two children together, Connor, now 17, and Bella, 19.
An earlier excerpt from the report, issued last week, claimed Scientology leaders had auditioned potential brides for Tom Cruise before he met and decided to marry his third wife Katie Holmes.
This was roundly denied by the church in a statement.
“The entire story is hogwash,” they said.
“There was no project, secret or otherwise, ever conducted by the Church to find a bride (audition or otherwise) for any member of the Church. Never.
“The allegation and entire premise of the Vanity Fair article is totally false.
“Like clockwork, stories about this <<phantom>> audition surface in the tabloids every few months.
“We have been denying this ridiculous tale now since it first appeared in print FOUR years ago.”
A spokesman for Tom Cruise also poured cold water on the article, saying: “Lies in a different font are still lies – designed to sell magazines.”
Tom Cruise’s lawyer Bert Fields has denied claims that the Church of Scientology embarked on a long-term “auditioning” process to find the actor a new partner, after his 2001 divorce from Nicole Kidman.
Bert Fields called a Vanity Fair report, previewed on the magazine’s website, “long, boring and false”.
He said it was “a rehash of tired old lies” run in the supermarket tabloids.
Tom Cruise and his third wife Katie Holmes divorced in July this year.
The article, written for October’s edition of Vanity Fair, claimed the top-secret project was led by Shelly Miscaviage, the wife of Scientology leader David, in 2004.
Tom Cruise and his third wife Katie Holmes divorced in July this year
Special correspondent Maureen Orth said she was told by “several sources” that actresses were quizzed by fellow Scientologists to find a suitable partner for Cruise, one of the organization’s most prominent proponents.
Actress Nazanin Boniadi, who was born in Iran and raised in the UK, told the magazine she was approached in 2004 and “audited”, before being selected to date Tom Cruise.
The article alleges their first date was conducted “with an entourage of Scientology aides”, but the relationship faltered after a few months and ended in 2005.
The Church of Scientology has spoken out against the feature in a statement.
“There was no project, secret or otherwise, ever conducted by the church to find a bride (via audition or otherwise) for any member of the church. Never.”
It claimed the magazine relied on a small group of “anti-Scientologists” for information, who had “shamelessly exploited Tom Cruise’s divorce by spreading false and invented tabloid stories.”
Vanity Fair says it stands by the story and has denied claims that it paid its sources.
Maureen Orth is a long-time contributor to the magazine, who has interviewed Vladimir Putin and Margaret Thatcher, as well as writing investigative articles about the allegations of sexual abuse levelled against pop star Michael Jackson.
Tom Cruise married Katie Holmes, with whom he has a daughter Suri, in an Italian castle in November 2006.
Katie Holmes filed for divorce at the end of June this year and the couple announced they had agreed a settlement several weeks later.
Actress Katie Holmes was awarded just $400,000 a year in child support payments in her divorce settlement from Tom Cruise, according to new reports.
Katie Holmes, 33, signed a prenuptial agreement when she married Tom Cruise, 50, in 2006 which excluded her from his $250 million fortune.
According toTMZ, Katie Holmes will receive no spousal support from Tom Cruise. However, he is required to pay over $33,000 a month in child support for their six-year-old daughter Suri until she turns 18.
Tom Cruise will also pay for Suri’s medical and dental expenses as well as her insurance, education costs and college tuition. The money will reportedly be paid by electronic transfer.

The couple also agreed that their daughter will not attend boarding school, shooting down reports that Suri would be sent to a school which focused on Tom Cruise’s religion, Scientology.
Katie Holmes will have sole custody of Suri, however Cruise was granted “meaningful” visitation rights.
If their marriage had lasted more than 11 years, Katie Holmes, who earns a considerable amount less than her former husband, would have received half of Tom Cruises’ $250 million fortune.
“The case has been settled and the agreement has been signed,” her attorney told E! News recently.
“We are thrilled for Katie and her family and are excited to watch as she embarks on the next chapter of her life.
“We thank Tom’s counsel for their professionalism and diligence that helped bring about this speedy resolution.”
The settlement came just two months after Katie Holmes sensationally lodged the legal papers to end their five-year marriage.
Citing “irreconcilable differences” for the split, the actress requested sole legal custody and “primary residential custody” of Suri.
“We are committed to working together as parents to accomplish what is in our daughter Suri’s best interests,” the former couple said in a joint statement.
“We want to keep matters affecting our family private and express our respect for each other’s commitment to each of our respective beliefs and support each other’s roles as parents.”
Meanwhile it has been reported that Tom Cruise, who is currently filming the movie All You Need Is Kill in London, has thrown himself into work since the breakdown of his marriage.
Speaking to Grazia a source said: “Tom’s friends and family have urged him to take a break, but he has brushed off their concern.
“He is refusing to slow down and is trying to soldier on. He doesn’t seem to be himself. He hasn’t been working out like he normally does and doesn’t appear to be eating well at all. His clothes just hang off him.”
The source also told the magazine: “His way of dealing with this is to throw himself into his work, but as a result he’s not looking after himself, and he risks cutting himself off from people who care about him and want to make sure he’s OK.”
Tom Cruise has two other children Connor, 17, and Isabella, 20, from his marriage to actress Nicole Kidman.
Actor Tom Cruise reunited with his daughter Suri in New York yesterday for the first time since his split from wife Katie Holmes.
Shooting on his latest movie Oblivion wrapped in California, Tom Cruise flew to New York overnight to see his youngest child.
Suri Cruise, 6, cuddled her father with one arm and clutched a soft toy in the other as he carried her into the Greenwich Hotel.
They later emerged, seemingly having changed outfits, with Suri switching from casual red flip-flops into a pair of burnt red patent flats – although her orange dress remained the same.

Tom Cruise, 50, also seemed to have freshened up, wearing a navy T-shirt instead of a light blue shirt.
His sister Cass Mapother was also seen arriving at the establishment with toys in tow.
Tom Cruise had no contact with Katie Holmes when he made a five minute visit to her apartment to collect their child earlier this morning, according to TMZ.
The actor and his daughter were last spotted in public together on June 16, when they dined at Sushi Samba in Reykjavik, Iceland, along with Katie Holmes.
It was no doubt an emotional reunion for father and daughter, who have been keeping in touch via phone and video chat in recent weeks.
Last week Tom Cruise’s lawyer, Bert Fields said the actor was eager to be with his daughter again, adding: “Tom loves Suri very, very much, as he does his other two children. Tom is a family man, and dedicated to his children. They are the centre of his world.”
Tom Cruise’s older children Isabella, 19, and 17-year-old Connor from his marriage to Nicole Kidman have both been spending time with him in recent weeks, including sombre birthday celebration on July 3.
Following her split from Tom Cruise on June 29, Katie Holmes has secured primary custody of their little girl in an undisclosed divorce agreement.
It was recently revealed Katie Holmes has enrolled Suri into New York’s Convent of the Sacred Heart School.
The conservative school – where former pupils include Lady Gaga and Paris Hilton – was chosen because the actress wants her daughter to have a Catholic education, rather than being taught at a Scientology school as Tom Cruise desired.
New reports claim that Katie Holmes and daughter Suri Cruise were involved in a minor car collision in New York City yesterday.
Katie Holmes and her six-year-old daughter with Tom Cruise are believed to have been riding in the back of a black Mercedes sedan when it was struck by a sanitation truck on Monday evening.
No one was reported hurt in the incident.
The actress was seen leaving Manhattan’s Chelsea Piers with Suri, where she takes gymnastics, before the incident occurred.

Police arrived to the scene and documented the damage on the S550, which sustained a large dent and several scratches to the rear driver side panel.
It appeared the Volvo dump truck – from Classic Santitation Recycling New York Corp – had backed into the luxury vehicle.
Katie Holmes and Suri were not seen at the scene of the accident. It was unclear if the actress and her daughter were in the vehicle when the incident occurred.
However, drivers of the Mercedes and sanitation truck were seen talking to authorities.
Reports Katie Holmes and Suri were involved in the collision were originally published by Pacific Coast News and X17Online, who captured pictures at the scene.
Disc jockey Connor Cruise was spinning the tunes at the Expendables 2 party during Comic-Con in San Diego Thursday night.
Tom Cruise’s adopted son “didn’t appear to pay any attention to the scantily-clad dancers near him on the stage,” US Weekly reports.
“He was totally consumed by his DJ set.”
In reality, says the magazine, Connor Cruise has been disoriented by the quick break-up of his father, Tom Cruise and the woman who has been raising him for years – Katie Holmes.
“Connor is actually really upset,” US quotes an “insider” as saying.
“Katie was practically his mom. He called her mom, too.”

Connor Cruise, 17, and his sister Isabella, 19, were both adopted as babies by Tom Cruise while he was married to former wife, Nicole Kidman.
After their divorce, Nicole Kidman fled to Nashville with new husband, Keith Urban, and largely left the rearing of the couple to Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes.
Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes have been together for eight years and have a six-year-old daughter, Suri.
During that time, Katie Holmes also took on the mothering role to the growing Connor and Isabella Cruise and was a regular at their school functions and sports games.
On Monday, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes reached a speedy settlement after she blindsided the Mission Impossible star by suddenly filing divorce papers June 28.
Known as DJ C-Squared, it was a stoic Connor Cruise who spun last night from a Mac computer.
“He was very focused on the screen the entire time,” the eyewitness added.
In between sets, he talked to pals sitting with him in the DJ booth.
Connor Cruise’s DJ gig came a day after he visited newly single dad Tom on the Mammoth Lakes, California set of his film, Oblivion.
Father and son seemed very free with one another and smiled easily at one another.
Katie Holmes has turned her back on the controversial religion of Scientology by registering with a Catholic church in New York, it has been claimed.
According to a new report, the actress has formally confirmed her return to Catholicism by signing up to the Church of St. Francis Xavier.
Katie Holmes’ decision to register as a parishioner at the church has been met with excitement by the congregation.
One member of the church choir told the Huffington Post: “Everyone is thrilled to have Katie join us.
“She has not yet attended a service, but when she does she will be welcomed with open arms.”
Katie Holmes has turned her back on the controversial religion of Scientology by registering with a Catholic church in New York
On its website, the Church of St. Francis Xavier, which dates back to 1847, “strives to be a prophetic, welcoming community, inclusive witness to the presence of Christ Jesus in our midst”, according to its mission statement.
The actress’ decision to register with the church is sure to be seen as her final way of distancing herself from Scientology.
And the move is also the latest sign that Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise’s six-year-old daughter Suri, of whom Katie is believed to have sole custody, will follow in the actress’ Catholic footsteps, rather than follow her father and his devotion to Scientology.
Eileen Berlin, Tom Cruise’s former personal manager, became his surrogate mother and mentor when he was on the cusp of fame and she says that she knew from the start that his relationship with Katie Holmes was doomed.
Breaking her silence for the first time since she signed the actor as her client soon after his 18th birthday, Eileen Berlin said last week that she blamed Tom Cruise’s pent-up anger created by an abusive childhood for his three broken marriages.
As a child, the star, born Thomas Cruise Mapother IV, suffered from dyslexia, was bullied by his peers, and beaten and then abandoned by his father.
At 15, Tom Cruise entered a seminary, intending to become a priest.
Eileen Berlin, now 77, ran a New York film and theatrical management agency with her late husband and met Tom Cruise some three years later, after he dropped his surname and made acting his calling instead.
As a child, Tom Cruise suffered from dyslexia, was bullied by his peers, and beaten and then abandoned by his father
“His mom had asked him to leave her house, I think because he had had a teenage drinking problem,” Eileen Berlin said.
“She had remarried and he harbored a lot of anger and resentment at his natural father, who had deserted him and his three sisters.
“Every time I saw him, he would be with a girl, but I never saw him with the same girl twice. It was almost like he had to prove he was wanted – or maybe he wanted to feel loved.
“I wasn’t surprised Katie broke up with him. I was just surprised it lasted as long as it did. I was surprised when he married his first wife, Mimi Rogers, and I was surprised it lasted ten years a second time, with Nicole Kidman.
“Tom was moody and would get angry in a snap of your fingers. It was like something was smoldering and it would boil up and explode.”
Carrying a guitar and a duffle bag stuffed with a few possessions, Tom Cruise moved into the manager’s Manhattan apartment for three months after he signed up with her company. In 1981, Tom Cruise signed the contract for his breakthrough action film, Taps.
Eileen Berlin arranged for him to pose for publicity portraits. In one of them, dressed in tight jeans and a tank top, he strikes a belligerent pose and flexes his muscles but in others, he smiles with innocent charm.
“By the time I met him, he had decided he could be a star,” she said.
“He wanted to be treated like a star and he acted like a star. He would walk around my house in a little G-string strap and nothing else. I had a mirrored wall and he would stand in front of it, flexing his biceps and admiring himself.
“I was a bit embarrassed but he liked to show off his body. He had a great pride in it.”
Though he could be moody, the young lodger also had a charming side. Eileen Berlin said: “He was sweet, respectful and mannerly to a fault. He always addressed me as <<ma’am>> and my husband as <<sir>>. But he was so private, he couldn’t show his true feelings. You would get so far and he would close down. I am sure his wives would have come up against that barrier.”
“He would channel his rage into his roles,” Eileen Berlin said.
“For Taps, he locked himself in the closet. He said he thought about someone raping his sister before he filmed a scene where he blasted a machine gun. Once, my husband and I took him out for lunch while they were on location and a waitress said, <<Are you one of the actors?>> Tom said to us, <<Please tell her not to ask me any questions. I’m still in character>>.”
Another time, a row broke out when Eileen Berlin gave him a surprise birthday present – an album in which she had pasted photos of him from fan magazines. Eileen Berlin said: “He screamed, <<I didn’t want to be in the teen mags>>. He threw the album hard at me and it hit me on the cheek.”
Their professional relationship ended in 1983 but they stayed in touch and during a subsequent dinner, Tom Cruise mentioned the Church of Scientology, crediting it with helping him overcome his childhood learning disorder.
Eileen Berlin says she started to receive invitations to church events.
“I think Tom was the perfect candidate for Scientology,” she said.
“He didn’t believe in therapy but he obviously needed help. He just couldn’t have a relationship and I think that was because you have to open yourself up and he’d been too hurt by his father to do that.
“The world sees this good-looking guy, worth millions. I still just see this little boy.”
Tom Cruise’s lawyers have taken at a swipe at Katie Holmes, accusing her and her legal team of “playing the media”.
While Tom Cruise, 50, has kept silent save for the statement he issued immediately after Katie Holmes made her announcement, his lawyer Bert Fields spoke to the BBC yesterday about the impending battle between the couple and their fight for custody of Suri, 6.
In a thinly veiled attack on Katie Holmes, he said: “We are letting <<the other side>> [Katie and her team], play the media until they wear everyone out and then we’ll have something to say.”
Bert Fields added: “Tactically we can’t say where Tom will file a divorce case and if he’ll be seeking joint custody of Suri.”
It was certainly an unprecedented broadside intended to draw sympathy away from Tom Cruise’s estranged wife, and all the more notable as the actor, who celebrated turning 50 this week is notoriously private.
Bert Fields, who spoke to BBC Radio 1’s Newsbeat, would not be drawn on specific details of the divorce – but did use his opportunity to express that his client was “really sad about what’s happening”.
The lawyer added: “It’s not Tom’s style to do this publicly. He is really sad about what’s happening.”
It is believed Katie Holmes wants legal custody because she is worried about Tom’s devotion to sci-fi cult Scientology and the effect the quasi-religious sect may have on their six-year-old daughter.
However a source told TMZ: “[Katie] was totally committed to Scientology. She had enthusiasm for it and would voluntarily and gladly participate in it when Tom was off shooting movies.
“This is not a fight over religion. It’s being used as a way to hurt Tom.”

The now warring spouses are not speaking, but Tom Cruise is reportedly calling Suri “several times a day”.
Tom Cruise has borne the brunt of the negative publicity surrounding the divorce, and it seems his lawyer is keen to redress the balance.
But yet more revelations emerged today claiming Tom Cruise controlled Katie Holmes “like a puppetmaster making every major and minor decision in her personal and professional life”, wrote TMZ.

It emerged yesterday that Katie Holmes had been secretly planning her divorce assault for several weeks with the help of her father Martin Holmes.
The secretive plan included switching all her cell phones and email addresses.
Katie Holmes was said to be contact with Tom Cruise, right up until last week, playing the role of doting wife.
“She was talking to Tom on the phone up until last week saying, <<I love you>>,” a source told People magazine.
But the escape plan was well underway when Katie Holmes recently visited China for work commitments.
“Her inner circle has been planning this and switching out cell phones since she was in China [in mid-June],” the source said.
“When new cell phones arrived, then nobody could reach her. Her old best friends from last week don’t have her new number, no e-mail. She’s unreachable.”
Katie Holmes even allegedly bent the truth to Tom Cruise about her new Chelsea apartment.
“[Tom] knew that she moved there, but [he thought it was] for different reasons,” the source told People.
“She said she moved there to drive into the underground garage. There are fewer paparazzi and it’s less intrusive for her,” the source continued.
“It was the first phase of getting everything out of the house, and that’s why she was able to say she’s moving without giving an indication that she was going to divorce him.”
Katie Holmes’ father also fired some of his daughter’s assistants and hired new ones in place to help out with the grand plan.
In their new apartment building, neighbors say mother and daughter are a joy to have.
“Katie and Suri have been very friendly to everyone they see in the building,” a source told Radaronline.
“But they mostly keep to themselves.”
However the pair has been spotted using the communal children’s playroom.

Tom Cruise intends to go to court in Los Angeles in person to ensure he is legally allowed to see the youngster.
Katie Holmes filed for the divorce in New York because she believes she has a better chance of winning sole custody, and although Tom Cruise was encouraged to file in California, the law states divorce cannot be filed in separate states at the same time.
A source said: “Tom has told Dennis Wasser and Bert Fields, his long-time entertainment lawyer, that his first priority is getting a court order in place, obviously a temporary one, that will allow him to legally see his daughter.
“Team Cruise has extensive documentation to prove that Los Angeles is where the case should proceed, because this is where he says they have lived.
“Tom is extremely disappointed that Katie filed in New York, and he feels that she is trying to cut him out of their daughter’s life.
“Tom won’t tolerate it and told his lawyers that if he personally needs to go to court and make a plea in front of the judge for an order allowing him to see his daughter, he will.”
Despite her smiling exterior the strain of Katie Holmes’ break-up from Tom Cruise is showing itself in other ways – most notably her rail-thin body.

It is worth noting that Katie Holmes seductively flashes her sheer black bra in an unbuttoned top – as she appears to be rebelling against reports that Tom controlled even her wardrobe choices.

And a source present at the interview told the New York Post that Katie Holmes didn’t appear to be happy in her relationship with Tom Cruise at the time.

It has been claimed life behind closed doors for Katie Holmes was far from the romantic love story her Hollywood husband Tom Cruise painted it to be.
Today it was being suggested the pair had been living in separate sections of their sprawling LA apartment, with Katie Holmes opting to live in a large communal area in the Scientology Celebrity Centre – rather than face her increasingly controlling husband.
After Katie Holmes announced her plans to divorce her husband of five years, their lives have been blown open with a picture of a controlling, often manipulative Tom Cruise emerging – taking charge of his wife’s movie roles, appearance and even changing her name.
The Sunday Mirror reports Tom Cruise told his wife she must be called “Kate” instead of “Katie” and carefully picked her film roles – making sure the starlet didn’t opt for something he didn’t agree with.
Also their building, in the huge towering Scientology complex in LA was carefully guarded with sources revealing “men in suits” stood guarding every door and even “escorting” people to their own rooms.
“Katie was really embarrassed about it and didn’t seem to like people to see the way she lived behind closed doors. Everyone knew they stayed in separate sections of the apartment,” a family friend said.
Cracks began to emerge after Katie Holmes started to fear for her daughter Suri, 6, when she realized Tom Cruise’s devotion to Scientology could not be wavered.
And Katie Holmes, who filed for divorce in New York – where it is thought she stands a better chance of getting custody of Suri, was thought to have “finally snapped” after seeing a shot of her husband posing provocatively on the cover of W magazine with two women draped over him.
But it was his unwavering commitment to following the Scientology doctrine which sowed the seed of discontent according to family and friends.
Under the doctrine a child can make his or her own decisions and Tom Cruise treated his daughter “like a little adult”.
A family friend said: “Tom basically treats Suri as a little adult, however Katie treats her like a six-year-old child, and that causes major clashes.”
“The couple was arguing over Suri.”
The source added to RadarOnline.com: “Katie did not want Tom making all the decisions in Suri’s life, and that’s what was going on. She decided it was high time she started deciding on what was best for her daughter, or at least having an equal say, and she knew that would be impossible if she remained Mrs. Tom Cruise.”
