Bobbi Kristina Brown and Nick Gordon lived together as siblings for more than a decade before Whitney Houston’s death in February, with Nick considered to be the superstar’s unofficial adopted son.
Whitney Houston took Nick Gordon into her home when he was just 12 after his father went to prison and his mother was unable to take care of him.
However, following Whitney Houston’s passing – having died at the age of 48 due to an accidental drowning complicated by heart disease and cocaine use – the controversial pair grew closer.
Set to premiere on October 24, the show follows the Houston clan including Pat, Whitney’s sister-in-law and manager, Pat’s daughter Rayah, Whitney’s brother Gary, Bobbi Kristina and Grammy Award-winning singer Cissy Houston in the aftermath of the pop superstar’s tragic death.
“Pat Houston, Whitney’s sister-in-law, manager and most trusted confidant, manages the business and estate of the beloved singer and her most prized possession, her daughter Bobbi Kristina,” said a Lifetime press release.
“The series will follow Pat and her husband, Gary, Whitney Houston’s brother, as they take on their greatest challenge, supporting and guiding Bobbi Kristina as she faces the world alone, without the one person she relied on the most, her Mother.”

Monique Houston, Whitney Houston’s former sister-in-law and ex-wife of Gary Houston, speaks out for the first time in an exclusive interview with Ebony.com about being shut out of the family and why the singer’s death was not a surprise for her.
Monique Houston said she is aware of the consequences and she made the mistake of speaking out years ago about what she said was a pattern of enabling within the Houston family. The result? She was cut off. Monique Houston was married to Gary Houston and the two share a son and daughter. But this time, Monique Houston says she will not be silent.
Like most people who’ve ever been affiliated with Whitney Houston and who have spoken out since the singer’s death, she says she wasn’t surprised at how her story played out. But the culprit, Monique Houston says, is that for years there’s been a pattern of enabling, and she hopes that by speaking out now, she’ll help save the next generation of the Houston clan.
EBONY: Why do you want to talk now?
Monique Houston: If it’s not now, when? I just really had to speak out about the cycle that has gone on for a number of years. Now is the time for me really to take this situation and speak about it. So that’s where I’m at now. I’ve really tried to shield my children. They’ve dealt with a lot over the years and I really try to shield them from a lot of negativity that would come their way, but now that they are adults and they’re as healthy as they can be under the circumstances, I think they’re prepared for what’s ahead and some of the realities.
EBONY: It sounds like you really weren’t all that shocked at how things unfortunately ended for your former sister-in-law, is that correct?
MH: No, I wasn’t shocked. I was caught off guard. You know, we all prayed that she would recover and …recovery with a drug addict is an ongoing process. But she just was so healthy and beautiful from the press that came out of Sparkle, that it just totally caught me off guard. I really was sitting back and looking forward to the movie actually coming out and what would happen for her with that. So I was really caught off guard, but unfortunately, I wasn’t surprised.
EBONY: When was the last time you’d actually spoken with her?
MH: Many years ago. I left right after her wedding to Bobby Brown. I left my husband around that time, and then I think I had Thanksgiving with her and Bobby and Mrs. [Cissy] Houston about a year or two after that. So that was one of the last times I had actual contact with her.
EBONY: What do you think the real issue was? You kind of say that the burden of being Whitney Houston is what ultimately killed your former sister-in-law. What do you mean about that, specifically?
MH: Well, it was a large image to live up to. I mean, the image they created for her was a part of who she was, but it wasn’t the whole person. And I feel that trying to live up to that perfect type of pop diva type of image they created for her was a lot of weight. Trying to live up to what everybody in her family wanted or needed from her was a huge responsibility for her also. And then the media just picked at her constantly and always questioned her lifestyle … I just feel like that was an awful lot of pressure.
Monique Houston, Whitney’s former sister-in-law and ex-wife of Gary, speaks out for the first time since the singer’s death
EBONY: Did you ever talk with her about that pressure back when you all still had a relationship and were talking more frequently?
MH: We never talked about the pressure, per se, but anytime that she did have down time, you could really get a general sense that she cherished it. It was an awful lot to get out there and work. The road was very demanding and tiring and Whitney was really a homebody. I believe she did love to sing, but my opinion is the performance end of it and the rigors of that really took a toll on her as well.
EBONY: How about your children? I know that they’re older, but how are they handling it? And what have you said to them about it?
MH: It was really devastating. The first thing they did was basically to come home and withdraw a little bit. My son didn’t want to go to school—he’s finishing up at Morehouse. The conversation I have had with them has been the truth over the years. My ex-husband was arrested for drugs in North Carolina (when they were kids). So here I am as a parent trying to shield them and not have them watch TV and they go to school and somebody in the first grade says, ‘Your father was arrested for drugs; he’s a drug dealer.’ You know? Or they would come at them, ‘Oh, your aunt’s this or your aunt’s that.’ Over the years, I
had to always reassure them, and educate them, and be honest with them. I’ve always been honest with them about their father’s addiction. I had to also prepare them for the reality of what would be coming out in the press, as far as their aunt was concerned.
EBONY: Are you concerned about any backlash from the Houston family, talking about some of those issues now?
MH: Not really, because I’ve been through so much with them. I basically raised my kids on my own. I’ve had a lot of different issues with my ex-husband and his wife over the years. Mrs. Houston doesn’t speak to me after I did speak out publicly about six years ago about some of the issues that I was having. I also made comments on the “Being Bobby Brown” reality show. So the relationship between my kids and the Houstons has not been a straight line. Whatever relationship they choose to have with their family in the future … I don’t feel that I could negatively affect something that hasn’t been fluid to start with. I told my kids that they have had a lifetime to get to know my children and the door was always open for access. This information I’m revealing is kind of like ‘don’t kill the messenger.’ It’s hard to hear, and a lot of people don’t want to hear it, but it’s the truth. And sometimes the truth is painful.
EBONY: What are you hoping happens after this interview?
MH: Well my hope is for the next generation in the Houston family. I can’t really hold a lot of hope for the adults. I think a lot of the adults in the family have had a responsibility to have healthier relationships within the family and they haven’t. So I really would hope my kids and their cousins would be able to take some of the information and apply it to their lives and move forward. I hope Bobbi Kris can find a healthier lifestyle in the future. I don’t’ know what environment she is in, but that’s one reason why I came forward. I just felt like some of the denial and some of the covering, which is part of enabling, it has to stop now—not only for my children’s benefit but for her wellbeing going forward.
EBONY: You’ve expressed concern for Bobbi Kristina. Are you thinking she’s jumping into the business too soon?
MH: If this is what she wants, I believe in educating yourself or framing or studying your craft if that’s what she wants to do. I think that she does need some type of focus as far as something to do with her life and direction and I was really pleased that somebody like Tyler Perry did reach out to her. He would be an excellent mentor for her as far as some of the things he’s been through, how he’s come through and how he’s flourished. I think she could learn a lot from his story, as far as survival and recovery—that may help her. I just felt that the Oprah interview was just a little too soon, as far as timing.
EBONY: Do you have a relationship with Bobbi Kristina?
MH: No, I don’t. When I walked away, I walked away. I didn’t expect to have any continuing relationships, necessarily. I did have one with Mrs. Houston, but that fell apart. And the only thing I’ve wanted was that my children have those healthy relationships—which sometimes did not happen.
EBONY: Are they close with your ex-husband?
MH: Not at all. Not at all. That’s really, right now—in my opinion—a toxic relationship.
EBONY: What’s something you would love for the world to know about your former sister-in-law? What’s something that maybe wasn’t as obvious to the rest of us as was to you?
MH: She just had a great sense of humor and she loved to laugh. And you know, that’s the thing that I think about the most —when she was relaxed at home it was all a bunch of laughter and jokes and being silly—especially with her brothers, and her brother Michael. So that’s the biggest thing. She loved her nieces and her nephews. She loved having children around. When she would be backstage—either coming off stage or going on—when the kids were little, she liked to sit them on her lap, and I think that calmed her down a lot. So just the fun-loving person that she was. And one thing that I wish that she could have done was continue acting, and even have been in a comedy cause she just had that wit that a lot of people didn’t get to see.

Whitney Houston’s family speaks out about the late singer’s incredible spirit in an emotional interview with Oprah Winfrey on Sunday’s Oprah’s Next Chapter.
In a March 11 special shot in Atlanta, Oprah Winfrey interviewed those closest to the singer: her daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown, longtime manager and sister-in-law Patricia Houston and brother Gary Houston.
Bobbi Kristina Brown, 19, spoke first, saying that she still feels her mother’s spirit around her.
“I can sing her music but to hear it right now – I can’t,” Bobbi Kristina said.
“I can hear her voice talking to me in spirit: <<Keep moving baby, I got you>>. I can always hear her with me.”
Furthermore, Bobbi Kristina says although it is hard to keep herself together after Whitney Houston’s death, she’s managing to do it day by day.
“I start crying and deal with it, but then I hear her voice again: <<Keep moving>>,” Bobbi Kristina said.
Patricia Houston spoke next, saying that she thought drugs might eventually play a role in her death.
“The handwriting was on the wall,” Patricia Houston said.
“I would be kidding myself otherwise. But things were really changing with her.”
Furthermore, she said Whitney Houston was really focused on starting the foundation of a career for Bobbi Kristina.
“She loved Krissy with everything she had, and was trying to make things right with her,” Patricia Houston said.
Gary Houston, Whitney Houston's brother said he was shocked to hear that his sister’s life was taken so soon
Gary Houston, Whitney Houston’s brother, also spoke, saying he was shocked to hear that his sister’s life was taken so soon.
“I never thought anything like this would happen,” Gary Houston said.
“I never thought it would be like this, but it always crosses your mind that this can happen.”
Gary Houston also spoke on behalf of his mother Cissy Houston, who declined to participate in the interview.
“I think she’s doing better now,” Gary Houston said.
“But she lost her only daughter. The gift came through her and it’s rough for her.”
The 90-minute television special also touched on Bobbi Kristina’s father, Bobby Brown, who had a tumultuous marriage with Whitney Houston.
While some have accused Bobby Brown of introducing Whitney Houston to drugs, Pat Houston, and Whitney’s brother Gary said that was untrue, and had warm words for Bobby.
“I loved Bobby Brown. Bobby was a good guy,” said Gary Houston.
“I don’t know how good they were for each other.”
Patricia and Gary Houston said Bobbi Kristina has a relationship with her dad, but that the two have not spoken since the funeral.

Patricia Houston, Whitney Houston’ sister-in-law, has spoken about the moment she found the singer dead in her hotel room on February 11 during her interview with Oprah Winfrey on Oprah’s Next Chapter.
Speaking to Oprah Winfrey in her first TV interview since Whitney passed Patricia Houston recounted the events of that fateful day.
Pat Houston explained how Whitney had eaten lunch in her hotel room at the Beverly Hilton and she was returning from running an errand when she went to go and see the singer in her room.
Patricia Houston explained: “I headed down the hallway I heard screaming.
“I was going to her room she had been asking for me she had called my phone twice and I was going to see her.
“I headed down the hallway to her room and I heard screams and I saw the hairstylist (Mary) drop to her knees and I kept walking very slowly a woman opened her door.
“I saw the makeup artist drop to her knees and I knew something was wrong I was just numb I walked I told her to dial 911.”
At this point both Patricia Houston and Oprah Winfrey broke down in tears at the emotional story.
After regaining her composure Patricia Houston continued: “I got close and I turn the corner Mary was at the door and she is screaming <<Oh my god>> I told her to stop and I said <<calm down>>.
“When I got into the room I saw Ray [security guard] trying to revive her to the point of exhaustion. I said <<Ray>>, the paramedics were coming in at that point, I said <<Ray let it go>>.
“He said <<I tried>> he was so out of breath I felt so badly for him.”
Patricia Houston, Whitney Houston’ sister-in-law, has spoken about the moment she found the singer dead in her hotel room on February 11 during on Oprah’s Next Chapter
Patricia Houston said Whitney was in the bathtub and had a peaceful look on her face.
Whitney Houston’ sister-in-law explained: “She was in the tub – I don’t know how she got there. They had to pull her out of the tub and were trying to revive her.”
Patricia Houston, who was not only Whitney’s friend but also her manager, said the paramedics asked her to leave.
She said: “I couldn’t leave her and I said don’t touch me please and I saw them cover her up and I knew that that was it. I knew that was it. Just looking at her and watching that I still could not believe it I could not believe it.”
While all this was going on Whitney Houston’s daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown was also at the hotel and was in fact sitting on the balcony of her own hotel room down the hall.
Oprah Winfrey made sure she got the details of that day clear and said: “Mary found her and Mary called Ray who was across the hall and you were the next person in that room?”
Patricia Houston replied: “I believe so yes.”
Describing her relationship with Whitney, Patricia Houston said: “There was a spiritual connection.”
She also said that she felt Whitney Houston’s spirit was still with her and speaking to her – something Whitney’s daughter Bobbi Kristina had spoken of earlier.
Patricia Houston said: “Her spirit is so strong she is always telling me <<I got you I got your back.>>”
Later in the interview Patricia Houston also said that she always feared drugs would end the singer’s life.
Patricia Houston also said she was “kidding herself” to say that she hadn’t worried about the tragic singer’s lifestyle over the years.
Speaking for the first time to Oprah Winfrey, Patricia Houston, who is married to Whitney’s brother Gary, was asked if she thought drugs would end up “taking” Whitney Houston. The “handwriting was kind of on the wall”, she replied.
Whitney was changing how she lived, Patricia Houston said, and “it wasn’t about substance abuse or anything like that relative to the … latter days or anything like that”.
“It was just more of a lifestyle. I was afraid for other things,” Patricia Houston added.
“I saw her chasing a dream, you know, looking for love in all the wrong places.”
Whitney Houston was found unresponsive in a Beverly Hilton hotel room in LA on February 11. The exact cause of death is yet to be confirmed, as toxicology results are still pending.
“Were you always afraid of that day, February 11, showing up in your life?” Oprah Winfrey asked Patricia Houston.
“Were you always afraid of getting a phone call or hearing that this is the day that it’s happened?”
“If things hadn’t changed. But things had, were, changing,” Patricia Houston responded.
“Things were really changing with her. Very much so. … I was afraid for other things.”
Patricia Houston also spoke about the Thursday night before the singer’s death when she Bobbi Kristina and Whitney attended a party together.
At the pre-Grammy event Whitney Houston was said to have had a fight with former American Idol contestant Stacy Francis.
Patricia Houston said she went to the event as “sister protector” and saw Whitney and Stacy exchange angry words but said there was no violence.
Oprah Winfrey also spoke to Whitney Houston’s brother and Patricia’s husband Gary who said he never thought he would have received a call saying his younger sister was dead.
Gary Houston said: “Not this soon I never thought anything like this would happen.”
He also outlined that Whitney Houston’s husband Bobby Brown had been welcome at the funeral and contrary to reports the singer’s family had never not wanted him there – but he said he didn’t know what happened at the funeral, Bobby was said to have stormed out over a seating issue.
Oprah Winfrey asked the couple if either of them had spoken to him.
Patricia Houston said: “He reached out to me a couple of days after the funeral.”
She said Bobby Brown asked after Bobbi Kristina and she said: “I told him she was OK.”
When asked if Bobby Brown and Bobbi Kristina have a relationship, Patricia Houston said she didn’t really know but added that “their last meeting in California was sweet”.

Whitney Houston’s last will and testament revealed the details on how Bobbi Kristina Brown will inherit her mother’s legacy.
Whitney Houston made provisions for her daughter before her death last month.
According to the legal document, Bobbi Kristina Brown, who is the beneficiary of Whitney Houston’s estate which has been placed into a trust, will receive money at the ages of 21, 25 and 30-years-old.
Whitney Houston, who passed away on February 11 aged 48, first set up the will in 1993, it was later amended in April 2000.
While Bobbi Kristina is not named, the singer stipulated that “any child of mine who survives” will receive all furniture, clothing, personal effects, jewellery and cars, as well as the balance of the estate.
Whitney Houston’s last will and testament revealed the details on how Bobbi Kristina Brown will inherit her mother’s legacy
If Bobbi Kristina dies, the estate would go to her relatives and her ex-husband Bobby Brown – who would have to decide between themselves how to divvy items up.
If the group couldn’t decide how to split the assets they would be sold and the cash would be distributed.
As well as staggering access to the trust Whitney Houston also stipulated that her trustees can release funds to Bobbi Kristina depending upon the circumstances and it is up to the trustees to allow to release the funds or not.
Presumably these would include if the teenager wanted to start a business, or pay for college.
It will no doubt come as a relief to the family that even though Whitney Houston’s former husband Bobby Brown is named in the will – he will not receive anything.

Whitney Houston’s mother Emily Cissy Houston is the executor of the will and her brother and sister-in-law are trustees.
Her brother Gary Houston, who was named in the will as one of family members who the estate would be divided between if Bobbi Kristina dies, has spoken out about the document.
According to TMZ, Gary Houston said: “I don’t concern myself with any of that [will stuff] … All I know is my sister’s gone.”
Bobbi Kristina Brown’s first interview since the death of Whitney Houston is set for Sunday, March 11, but members of the 19-year-old’s family have concerns about the timing of the one-on-one chat with Oprah Winfrey.
“There is still no resolution and there has been nothing concrete on the cause of [Whitney Houston’s] death, and they were hoping for that,” a Houston family friend tells People magazine.
“There were members of the family who weren’t keen on [the interview] going down at this time.”
The source says some of Whitney Houston’s close relatives wanted Bobbi Kristina to hold off on speaking publicly this close to her mother’s death.
“There are people who just want her to stay out of the limelight for a while,” says the friend.
“This is a little girl who just needs some time.”
Whitney Houston's close relatives wanted Bobbi Kristina to hold off on speaking publicly this close to her mother's death
The next step for Bobbi Kristina Brown – who currently is spending time with her aunt Patricia Houston and Whitney’s brother Gary Houston – is up in the air.
“She’s so very young and impressionable,” says the source.
“She has to start finding herself as a woman on her own as opposed to defining herself as Whitney’s daughter and Whitney’s support. It’s kind of interesting to see what’s going to happen to her from here on in.”
The source, who says Bobbi Kristina Brown “has definitely wanted to walk in her parents’ footsteps,” and pursue singing and acting, would have a tough act to follow. The source explains that “she will always have to deal with the constant comparison.
“I think she needs to find her own niche,” says the source.
