Prince William has begun a four-day visit to Japan by taking part in a traditional tea ceremony in Tokyo.

The Duke of Cambridge spent about 40 minutes taking part in the ritual at Hama Rikyu Gardens.

He is on a week-long trip to China and Japan where he will undertake engagements to promote UK relations with both countries.

In his first visit to Japan, Prince William also took a speedboat ride to Tokyo Bay, which will host much of the 2020 Summer Olympics.

The last time a major member of British royal family visited Japan was in 2008, when Prince Charles came with his wife Camilla.

Hundreds of students and school children waving British and Japanese flags waited in the rain to greet him.

On the first day of his tour Prince William visited the Nakajima tea house, built 350 years ago in Japan’s Edo period, in the middle of a small lake within the Hama-Rikyu gardens.

As he entered the tea house, Prince William removed his shoes like the other guests, which included Tokyo governor Yoichi Masuzoe.

Dr. Genshitsu Sen, who is 92 and the 15th generation of his family to hold a senior role in the spiritual art of tea making, performed the traditional ceremony.

He also made tea for Prince William’s parents, Prince Charles and Princess Diana, when they visited Kyoto in 1986. Close to 100,000 people flocked to a parade in Tokyo at the time, as so-called “Diana Fever” swept the nation.

A number of gifts were given to Prince William, including a box of crackers, a book about the tea ceremony and a modern tea bowl decorated with a horse design in celebration of Prince George.

On February 27, Prince William is due to meet fellow royals Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko at the Imperial Palace.

In this his first visit to Japan, Prince William will also be taken to the areas devastated by the 2011 tsunami and meet survivors.

In Shanghai, Prince William will launch the three-day Great Festival of Creativity at the city’s Long Museum on March 2.

Prince William has started full-time studies on an agriculture course at the University of Cambridge.

The Duke of Cambridge arrived at the university by public transport on the 09:44 service from London King’s Cross.

Prince William will take a 10-week course in agricultural management, organized by the university’s Programme for Sustainability Leadership.

The course is designed to help him for the time when Prince William inherits the Duchy of Cornwall estate from his father.

He is expected to make the 46-minute train journey several days a week but also has the option of overnight accommodation in Cambridge.

Prince William was greeted at St John’s College, where some of his tutorials will take place, by vice-chancellor Sir Leszek Borysiewicz, along with Master of St John’s, Prof Christopher Dobson, and Polly Courtice, director of the Programme for Sustainability Leadership.

The royal toured the college’s grounds, where he stopped to look at a plaque marking the Queen’s visit there in April 2011.

The course, which ends in March, has been designed specifically for Prince William but he will study alongside PhD students in some classes.

He will have 20 hours of teaching time each week, including work in small groups as well as one-to-one tuition and his own additional reading. He will also go on a series of field trips.

Prince William will be taught by academics specializing in geography, land economy and plant sciences.

He is expected to study subjects including rural and planning policy, farming and supply chains, site management, agricultural policy and conservation governance.

The cost of the course is being met privately.

Kensington Palace said the duke was considering a number of options for public service following the end of his service as an RAF search and rescue helicopter pilot in Anglesey.

The Duchy of Cornwall is the portfolio of land, property and investments that the duke will take over when the Prince of Wales becomes king.

Prince William graduated from the University of St Andrews in 2005 with a class 2:1 degree in geography, and it was as an undergraduate that he met his future wife Kate Middleton.

Prince William is to become a full-time student of agricultural management at Cambridge University from next week, Kensington Palace has announced.

The Duke of Cambridge will learn about issues facing the UK’s rural communities and farming industry during the 10-week bespoke course.

The studies are expected to give him a foundation for when he takes over the Duchy of Cornwall from Prince Charles.

It is thought the duke will live in Cambridge for part of the time.

A Kensington Palace spokesman said Prince William was “very much looking forward” to the course, which runs until mid-March.

The course is run by the Cambridge Programme for Sustainability Leadership (CPSL), an institution within Cambridge University’s School of Technology, which has Prince William’s father, Prince Charles, as its patron.

The Kensington Palace spokesman said: “The executive education programme of seminars, lectures and meetings will draw on the strengths of academics across the university.

“The course has been designed to help provide the duke with an understanding of contemporary issues affecting agricultural business and rural communities in the UK.”

The Duchy of Cornwall is a portfolio of land, property and investments which Prince William will inherit from his father when Prince Charles becomes king.

The duke, who is second-in-line to the throne, will have 18 to 20 hours of lectures, seminars and meetings a week, as well as essays to complete and field trips to attend.

The cost of the course is being met privately.

Prince William has described his newborn son, Prince George, as a “little bit of a rascal”.

In his first interview since the birth of Prince George on July 22, the Duke of Cambridge said he and Kate Middleton were enjoying their new role as parents.

“He either reminds me of my brother or me when I was younger, I’m not sure, but he’s doing very well at the moment,” he told CNN.

Prince William also said his son did not “want to go to sleep that much, which is a little bit of a problem”.

The duke admitted he does not get up in the night to see to the baby as much as Kate Middleton, adding that she is doing a “fantastic job”.

Prince William said he believes fatherhood has changed him already.

“The last few weeks for me have been just a very different emotional experience,” he said.

“Something I never thought I would feel myself… it’s only been a short period, but a lot of things affect me differently now.”

Prince George, who is third in line to the throne, was born on Monday 22 July at St Mary’s Hospital in west London.

The world’s media had been camped outside and they got their first glimpse of the new prince the following day when he emerged in the arms of his parents.

Asked about that moment, Prince William said they were “happy to show him off to whoever wanted to see him”.

“I think I was on such a high anyway,” he said.

“As any new parent knows, you’re only too happy to show off your new child and proclaim that he is the best-looking or the best everything.

“It’s nice that people want to see George, so I’m just glad he wasn’t screaming his head off the whole way through.”

After the photo call, Prince William drove his family home to Kensington Palace, and he admitted he had practiced fixing the baby’s car seat into the back of the car.

“I know there’s been speculation about that. I had to practice, I really did. I was terrified that I was going to do some… you know, it was going to fall off or it wasn’t going to close properly,” he said.

“So, I had actually practiced with that seat, but only once before.”

The interview formed part of a full hour-long documentary – Prince William’s Passion: New Father, New Hope – and is to be broadcast on CNN and ITV next month.

Earlier this week, Buckingham Palace said the duke’s condition had “improved considerably” and that he was being treated with antibiotics and was in “good spirits”.

Clarence House said Prince William and Prince Harry paid a “short private visit” to see their grandfather on Friday.

They made no comment to reporters outside as they left after 20 minutes.

Prince William visited the duke while on leave from his RAF search and rescue duties.

On Thursday, it was announced that he had qualified as a Royal Air Force search and rescue captain, after passing his tests on 29 May.

Meanwhile, his brother Prince Harry – a captain in the Army – has spent this week on pre-deployment training at RAF Wattisham in Suffolk.

The Queen and the Duke of York visited Prince Philip on Wednesday. Prince Andrew said that his father was “mending very well”.

Prince Philip had appeared to be in good health when he accompanied the Queen on Sunday on the royal barge the Spirit of Chartwell, which formed part of the Jubilee river pageant.

His admission to hospital meant that he could not join the Queen at the final Diamond Jubilee events to mark her 60 years on the throne.

Prince Philip is not due to attend his next scheduled engagement until Tuesday, when the Queen hosts a garden party at the Sandringham Estate as part of Jubilee celebrations.
