Saudi student Abdulrahman Ali Alharbi was detained for “acting suspiciously” at the Boston Marathon finish line on Monday but was later ruled out as a suspect by federal officials after they raided his apartment.

Officials said they were talking to Abdulrahman Ali Alharbi, 22, only as a witness.

Abdulrahman Ali Alharbi, who is studying English, is still in hospital after suffering from serious burns and is said to be cooperating fully with authorities. He was tackled to the ground by a civilian who believed he was acting suspiciously.

More than 24 hours after the deadly terrorist attack which killed three people and injured 183 at the Boston Marathon, authorities are no closer to finding out who is responsible and say the investigation is “still in its infancy”.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack and authorities do not even know if it was a group or an individual, Al Qaeda or a sympathizer, a lone wolf or a right wing extremist group capitalizing on it being Patriot’s Day.

Speaking this afternoon at a press conference, the FBI agent in charge, Rick DesLauriers, said they have received more than 2,000 tips which they have looked into but the range of suspects still remains wide open.

He said authorities are working around the clock and forensic evidence has been sent to FBI labs in Virginia to be analyzed and reconstructed.

Rick DesLauriers also asked people to report anyone who talked about targeting Monday’s race or showed interest in explosives or if anyone was seen carrying a heavy nylon bag in the area at the time.

“Someone knows who did this,” he said.

“Co-operation from the community will play a crucial role in this investigation,” Rick DesLauriers added.

It was also revealed today that important clues are being collected from the victims themselves.

Doctors at Tufts Medical Center said they had removed countless pieces of shrapnel from injured bodies and were turning them over to police and federal agents.

Dozens of pellets and nails were collected and sent away as evidence. Some had as many as 40 fragments in their body.

A letter posted to Mississippi Republican Senator Roger Wicker at the US Senate has been tested positive for the lethal toxin ricin or another poisonous substance, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has said.

The letter was intercepted at a centre handling post for the Capitol in Washington DC, US media report.

Ricin, extracted from castor beans, is 1,000 times more toxic than cyanide.

It can be fatal when inhaled, swallowed or injected, although it is possible to recover from exposure.

Roger Wicker issued a statement on Tuesday acknowledging the letter.

“This matter is part of an ongoing investigation by the United States Capitol Police and FBI,” he said.

“I want to thank our law enforcement officials for their hard work and diligence in keeping those of us who work in the Capitol complex safe.”

An official quoted by AP news agency said two tests had shown positive for ricin but the results are not deemed conclusive without further testing.

The letter was detected during a routine inspection of mail and did not reach the US Capitol or Senator Roger Wicker’s office, a Senate leadership aide was quoted as saying.

Senators were informed of the letter at a closed-door briefing by FBI Director Robert Mueller and Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano about the Boston Marathon bombings, the aide added.

There is a heightened sense of alert in the US capital after the attacks in Boston but there is no indication so far of any connection between the two incidents.

It is also not clear why the letter was sent to Senator Roger Wicker.

The Senate’s chief security office told Reuters: “The exterior marking on the envelope in this case was not outwardly suspicious, but it was postmarked from Memphis, Tennessee.”

All mail sent to members of Congress has been screened off-site since letters laced with anthrax were sent to Capitol Hill in 2001.

In 2004, three Senate office buildings were shut after tests found ricin in letters that had been sent to the Senate majority leader’s office.

Ricin was the poison used for the infamous murder of Bulgarian dissident Georgi Markov in September 1978.

Georgi Markov was waiting at a bus stop near Waterloo Bridge, London, when a stranger jabbed him in the leg with an umbrella.

The umbrella injected a tiny ricin-filled pellet into Georgi Markov’s leg and he died three days later in hospital.

Ricin:

  • Can be fatal when inhaled, ingested or – most dangerously – injected
  • One to three castor beans chewed by a child, or just eight seeds chewed by an adult, can be fatal
  • The toxin is part of the waste produced when castor oil is made

A graduate student at Boston University has been identified as the third victim killed at the Boston Marathon.

The student’s name was not released until the family could give permission.

The victim was one of three students watching near the finish line.

Another victim of bombings, also a grad student, was injured but is listed in stable condition at Boston Medical Center.

The injured student has been identified as Zhou Danling by China’s official Xinhua News Agency which quoted an unnamed official from the Chinese consulate in New York.

The report said Zhou Danling is in coma and her mother has asked for help in getting to the US to visit her wounded daughter.

The third student in the group was miraculously unharmed.

Boston University has confirmed one of its student has been hospitalized in stable condition.

Robert Hill, dean of Marsh Chapel, visited the injured student twice and said she underwent surgery on Monday and on Tuesday, according to Boston University Today.

“She is doing well,” says Robert Hill.

“She has her friends around her, and she will soon have family around her.”

Zhou Danling is reportedly a graduate of Wuhan University in central China, and currently a student at Boston University in actuarial science, according to a Xinhua report.

“She cannot talk now but can communicate with pen and paper,” the consulate said.

Boston is filled with colleges and there a handful of students among the 183 injured.

Three Tufts University students, 7 Emerson College students, 3 Northeastern University students, 2 Boston College students, and one Berklee College of Music student, according to the schools.

Boston College identified its two injured students as M.B.A. candidate Liza Cherney and joint J.D./M.B.A. student Brittany Loring, according to Boston.com.

“The two spectators were hospitalized with injuries resulting from the explosions near the Marathon finish line,” the school said.

Bill Richard returned to his house in Dorchester, Massachusetts, looking like “a walking dead” after losing his 8-year-old son Martin, and wife Denise and 6-year-old daughter Jane were seriously injured in Boston Marathon attacks.

Martin Richard had just got ice cream with his family and had returned to the finish line with them watching runners cross the finish line when he was killed by the second of two terrifying blasts that went off 12 seconds apart at the marathon’s finish line just before 3 p.m. on Monday.

Jane Richard, 6, lost a leg in the explosion and his mother Denise is in hospital after undergoing brain surgery.

Martin Richard’s older brother, 12-year-old Henry, escaped injury while his father suffered minor shrapnel wounds to his legs.

According to the Boston Globe, Martin Richard may have cheated death after walking out to embrace his father who is an avid runner but wasn’t competing in the marathon because of an injury.

When Bill Richard walked on, Martin turned back to rejoin his mother just as the bomb exploded.

Neighbors said Bill Richard returned home still wearing hospital scrubs on Monday night, struggling to come to terms with how, in a few seconds, his family had been ripped apart.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Bill Richard said: “My dear son Martin has died from injuries sustained in the attack on Boston. My wife and daughter are both recovering from serious injuries.

“We thank our family and friends, those we know and those we have never met, for their thoughts and prayers. I ask that you continue to pray for my family as we remember Martin.

“We also ask for your patience and for privacy as we work to simultaneously grieve and recover. Thank you.”

According to NBC News, Bill Richard told a local official that 6-year-old Jane would have also died if not for the heroic efforts of first-responders.

Jane Richard had run in a children’s race on Saturday, neighbor Beth Nagy told NBC. She had won a medal and was “all excited”.

Rep. Stephen Lynch of Massachusetts recounted what happened at the marathon after speaking to a traumatized Bill Richard.

“The kids were all up on the barrier as runners flooded in,” Stephen Lynch said on MSNBC’s Morning Joe.

“They were all focused forward and the blast came from the back and the side.”

“The dad is a runner, but he wasn’t running yesterday,” Stephen Lynch said.

“They were there to support some of their friends who were running.”

Bill Richard is a popular community leader in Dorchester, a Boston suburb. Martin Richard was a keen baseball player, climber and runner and was a member of Savin Hill Little League team.

Martin Richard was among at least three people killed in the bombings. Another 176 were injured with some 17 fighting for their lives. CNN reported that at least 10 victims have needed amputations.

At least nine of the wounded are thought to be children, including a 2-year-old boy who suffered a head injury.

When Bill Richard got home on Monday evening he was unable to speak or even look at his friends and neighbors who were gathered because he was so upset at the death of his son.

He came home for around 10 minutes at 10.30 p.m. to get some clothes.

Bill Richard is on the St Marks Area Main St Group, a local traders association, and his wife Denise is on the neighborhood watch board. The family is well known in the community and attends a nearby church.

Denise Richard also works at the local Neighborhood House Charter School, where Martin and Jane attended. The school’s flag flew at half-mast on Tuesday.

In a statement, the school described Martin Richard as “a bright, energetic” boy who had “big dreams” for his future.

“The Neighborhood House Charter School is mourning today the loss of our beloved student Martin Richard, during the tragic events at the Boston Marathon yesterday,” the statement read.

“He was a bright, energetic young boy who had big dreams and high hopes for his future. We are heartbroken by this loss.

“We are also praying for his mother Denise, our school librarian and sister Jane, another Neighborhood House Charter student, who were seriously injured yesterday. Our thoughts are with his father Bill Richard… and older brother Henry. They are a wonderful family and represent the very best this city has to offer.”

Martin Richard was a former student at the nearby Pope John Paul II Catholic Academy.

In a statement today, the school said: “The Pope John Paul II Catholic Academy community is offering its every prayer for the Richard family during this heartbreaking time. Martin was a former student of the Academy and was a kind, caring, and loving young boy who had great excitement for learning. We are deeply saddened by this tragedy.”

President Barack Obama has condemned the Boston Marathon bombings as a “terrorist act”.

Barack Obama said attack, close to the finishing line, was “heinous and cowardly”, but that the motive and culprit were not yet known and no-one was in custody.

Three people were killed, including 8-year-old Martin Richard, and more than 170 injured by the bombs.

The FBI, which is running the investigation, has said there are no “known additional threats” to Boston.

Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick says an interfaith service will be held for the victims on Thursday morning, attended by President Barack Obama.

President Barack Obama has condemned the Boston Marathon bombings as a terrorist act

In his first briefing after Monday’s attacks, Barack Obama had refrained from referring to terror attacks – a choice of words that drew criticism from some quarters.

Today the president said: “Any time bombs are used to target innocent civilians it is an act of terrorism.”

Barack Obama stressed it was not yet known whether an organization – either domestic or foreign – or a “malevolent individual” was responsible, nor what the motive might have been.

“Everything else at this point is speculation,” he said.

“It will take time… but we will find whoever harmed our citizens and we will bring them to justice.”

The first explosion went off close to the finish line at about 2:50 p.m. local time on Monday.

Some 23,000 runners were taking part in this year’s Boston marathon, which was being watched by hundreds of thousands of spectators.

The marathon is held on Patriots’ Day, a Massachusetts state holiday which commemorates the first battles of the American Revolution in 1775.

Thomas Grilk, executive director of the Boston Athletic Association, said the race was “an integral part of the fabric and history of our community” and would go ahead in 2014.

“We are committed to continuing that tradition with the running of the 118th Boston Marathon in 2014,” he said.

The London Marathon – the next major international marathon – is to go ahead on Sunday, with police saying they have well-rehearsed security plans.

The London Marathon organizers have said they will hold a 30-second silence at the start as a mark of respect for the Boston Marathon victims.

Boston Marathon bombs were made from 6-liter pressure cookers crammed with shards of metal, nails and ball bearings and stashed in black backpacks, police sources revealed today.

The two bombs killed three people and injured at least 176 at the world’s oldest marathon race on Monday.

The bombs have “frequently” been used in Afghanistan, India, Nepal and Pakistan, according to a 2010 Homeland Security Department pamphlet – hinting at the origins of the bombers behind the worst terrorist atrocity in the U.S. since 9/11.

When the devices exploded near the crowded Boston Marathon finish line around 2.50 p.m. on Monday, victims suffered as many as 40 shrapnel wounds each and at least 10 people needed amputations.

The bombs used to kill and maim are believed to have contained black powder or gunpowder as the explosive, and information on how to make such a bomb is available on the internet, experts said. The devices were then left at the scene to look like discarded property, CBS News reported.

Investigators have also found pieces of an electronic circuit board which could indicate a timer was used in the detonation.

Although no group has yet claimed responsibility for the attacks, similar devices were used in the failed 2010 attempt to bomb Times Square by Faisal Shahzad, who admitted he had undergone bomb-making training at a militant Islamist faction camp in Pakistan.

A pressure-cooker bomb is also a preferred weapon of al-Qaeda and listed as the “most effective” weapon of jihad, according to an English-language terror magazine called Inspire, in an article entitled “How to Build a Bomb in the Kitchen of Your Mom”.

Another article in Inspire last year listed “the most important enemy targets” for jihadists in America – and included sporting events, CNSNews noted.

The aim should be to target “human crowds in order to inflict maximum human losses”, a terrorist known as Abu Musab al-Suri wrote.

“This is very easy since there are numerous such targets such as crowded sports arenas, annual social events, large international exhibitions… etc.”

Krystle Campbell has been identified as the second victim killed in the Boston Marathon terror attacks on Monday.

Krystle Campbell was a 29-year-old steakhouse manager who went to the race every year.

Doctors initially told her father, William Campbell Jr., that Krystle had survived the bombing and was undergoing surgery but had mistaken her for her friend.

William Campbell spent 12 hours believing his daughter had survived and only learned the truth after going into the post-operating room and saw his daughter’s friend instead.

“We had the doctors come out and tell us everything they did [on the survivor] – and it wasn’t our daughter,” William Campbell said.

Krystle Campbell went with her pal, Karen Rand, to cheer on Karen’s boyfriend.

They were struck by the first blast as they waited near the finish line.

William Campbell rushed to the hospital and felt relieved when doctors said they were operating on their daughter’s leg at Massachusetts General Hospital.

But when nurses brought them into a post-operating room around 2 a.m. he saw Karen Rand instead.

“I said, <<That’s not my daughter, that’s Karen! Where’s my daughter?>>. The doctors were as shocked as we were,” William Campbell said.

A Boston detective later showed them a photo of Krystle Campbell, who worked as a manager at Jimmy’s Steakhouse.

“I almost passed out on the floor,” William Campbell said as he was about to view his daughter’s body.

“She was the best person you’d ever meet. She helped everybody,” he said.

“I don’t care who you were, she was always there.”

Krystle Campbell was one of the three victims killed in the two blasts that came just seconds apart. The first victim identified was 8-year-old Martin Richard.

There were 176 people injured in the attack, and 17 people remain in critical condition. As many as 10 people suffered a lost limb, including two children.

“My daughter was the most lovable girl. She helped everybody, and I’m just so shocked right now. We’re just devastated,” William Campbell said.

“She was a wonderful, wonderful girl. Always willing to lend a hand.”

Krystle Campbell went to watch the Boston Marathon every year, according to Boston.com.

She attended the University of Massachusetts-Boston and was a graduate of Medford High School.

Her grandmother, Lillian Campbell of Somerville, Massachusetts, said Krystle had just moved to the town a short time ago.

Krystle Campbell was living with her grandmother to care for her during an illness for the past couple of years.

Lillian Campbell said that her granddaughter “was just beautiful”.

“She was fun, outgoing person. She was always there to help somebody. All her friends loved her.

“The family is besides themselves now because something happened to her,” the grandmother said.

Before working at the steakhouse, Krystle Campbell was a manager at the Summer Shack.

“The Summer Shack family is devastated by the loss of our beloved Krystle Campbell. Please keep her & her family in your thoughts & prayers,” the popular restaurant tweeted this afternoon.

William Campbell had harsh words for whoever carried out the attack.

“I’m very angry. I hope they catch the bastard and fry him,” he said of whoever perpetrated the worst terror attack on U.S. soil since 9/11.

“I can’t understand it – someone doing that. People are out there enjoying a beautiful day and then to have this happen.

“And then the little boy that passed,” he told The New York Daily News, referring to 8-year-old Martin Richard.

“It’s totally tragic.”

The mayor of Medford, Massachusetts., Krystle Campbell’s hometown, said he had attempted to console William Campbell.

“Mr. Campbell said that she certainly was a dream daughter, the daughter that every father dreams to have and friends of hers said that she was eager about life,” Mayor Michael McGlynn said, according to Reuters.

“She had a great sense of humor and freckles and red hair that brought her right to her Irish roots. She was someone who worked hard at everything she did,” Michael McGlynn said.

“Another friend said she may have been a little loud at times but it was a loudness you loved.”

A former colleague of Krystle Campbell’s, Steve Sullivan of Pembroke, MA, told BuzzFeed that Krystle was “a beautiful person” and “an angel”.

“Whenever I saw her she always had a smile on her face.”

The Saudi student, who was detained for “acting suspiciously” at the Boston Marathon finish line, has been described by his neighbors as a “quiet, devout Muslim who is a huge soccer fan”.

Detectives and bomb disposal officers raided the 20-year-old’s apartment last night in the Revere area of Boston and could be seen removing several bags of evidence, though he has not been charged with anything.

The Saudi student, who is studying English, is in hospital after suffering from serious burns and is said to be cooperating fully with police. He was tackled to the ground by a civilian who believed he was acting suspiciously. Several neighbors believed he had Anglicized his Saudi name to Jason.

The bombs had been placed in six-liter pressure cookers packed with ball bearings and nails and placed in black duffel bags, it was revealed today.

The Saudi student – who has not been named – said he had been at dinner with friends the night before and was at the marathon simply because he “wanted to see the end of the race”.

One of his two flat mates, Mohammed Bada, described him as a devout Muslim and a soccer fan who is from the city of Medina in Saudi Arabia.

He is attending an English language school in greater Boston, the roommate said, adding that he last saw him on Sunday.

It is not clear if agents found anything in the raid, but Revere fire officials said they were called out to support bomb-squad officers as part of the investigation of the “person of interest”.

Other residents in the smart 13-storey complex said three young men lived in a fifth floor apartment.

“There are a lot of rumors floating about. This is a building that has been packed with people from the Middle East in recent years – it is a very popular area with Saudi students,” said Gita Lopez, who lives in one of the adjoining six blocks in the complex that is known as Water’s Edge.

Staff at the building’s leasing office refused to comment on the suspect or his friends. But one said: “We are co-operating fully with the police.”

However, other neighbors pointed to Boston’s role in the September 11 2001 terrorist attacks.

Brothers Hamza and Ahmed Ghamdi spent their last four nights hiding out at hotels in nearby Cambridge before hijacking Flight 175 moments after take off from Boston’s Logan Airport.

At Boston’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital, investigators seized the Saudi student’s clothes to examine whether they held any evidence that he was behind the attack, which is being called the worst terrorist attack on U.S. soil since 9/11.

On Tuesday, police sources told the Associated Press the bombs were made from pressure cookers filled with metal.

When they exploded around 2.50 p.m., they left victims covered in as many as 40 wounds each and attacked their lower extremities, leaving many needing amputations.

Law sources told the New York Post that after the man was grabbed by police, he smelled of gun powder and said: “I thought there would be a second bomb.” Then he asked: “Did anyone die?”

The Saudi man was tackled by a bystander by the scene who thought he was acting suspiciously.

Investigators were seen leaving the scene with brown paper evidence bags, trash bags and a duffel bag.

A law enforcement source told CBS: “They see him running away from the device. Now, a reasonable person would be running away. But this person had noticed him before. This is a civilian – chases him down, tackles him, turns him over to the Boston police.

“The individual is being looked at [and] was suffering from burn injury. That means this person was pretty close to wherever this blast went off, but not so close as to suffer the serious injuries that other people did.”

Five minutes before the first explosion, officials said the hooded man attempted to gain entry to a restricted area but was turned away. Authorities say he may be a foreign national, based on his accent.

Other reports suggested one line of inquiry was an individual caught on camera before the attack carrying multiple backpacks into the area 20 minutes before the deadly blasts.

Separately, pictures of a man in handcuffs surrounded by law enforcement officials circulated Twitter on Monday evening. But authorities didn’t identify the man or say whether his arrest was related to the blasts or if it was the “Saudi national”.

“At this time, we haven’t been notified of any arrests or anyone apprehended,” a police spokesperson said.

He said the presence of law enforcement spotters on the roof at the start of the race also made the seasoned marathoner suspect police must have had some threat or suspicion called in.

But government officials deny this and say there were no warnings of any kind.

As police scurried to find leads that would lead them to the culprits, speculation grew that it looked more like a right-wing terrorist attack rather than al Qaeda-inspired extremism.

The two blasts on Monday went off almost concurrently near the Boston Marathon finish line.

Police initially said a third blast occurred at the JFK Presidential Library but later reported it as an unrelated fire.

Cell phone service was shut down across the area to prevent any potential remote detonations as police feared there were secondary devices.

Police were in a desperate race against time to find any additional devices and said the task had been complicated by the items discarded by spectators fleeing the scene.

Multiple reports were flooding in in the moments after the attack, saying there were devices reported outside Harvard and other sites along the marathon route. But today it was confirmed that there were only two devices.

Massachusetts General Hospital, where 22 victims of the bomb blast are being treated, was forced into lock-down for about two hours after a suspicious package was reported in the parking garage across the street.

Bomb sniffing dogs from the Rhode Island State Police, SWAT officers from the Boston police department and bomb squad officers searched the entire parking structure, floor-by-floor.

Authorities found one bag, but determined it was not a threat and contained nothing suspicious.

As the investigation continued into Monday night, all off-duty officers in the city were called back on duty and dog units were sent in to help the emergency response.

The scene of the blasts will remain cordoned off for at least 24 hours as forensic work continues.

Police were pleading with onlookers to head home over fears the dangers remained in the downtown area of the city.

NBC reported that the devices which caused the blasts were “small homemade bombs” as the FBI referred it as a “terrorist attack”.

Police departments across the country including San Francisco and New York have been put on heightened alert.

Today, a plane was brought back to the gate at Logan airport after two passengers on board were speaking Arabic and people grew concerned.

According to officials, there was no immediate claim of responsibility for Boston Marathon explosions, but a Saudi suspect was arrested at the scene.

Meanwhile an official told CNN that there was no surveillance footage of the bombs being planted.

However, on Monday night, 20 police and federal officials, including members of the bomb squad raided a Boston area apartment.

A source confirmed that a large police presence at a home in Revere was related to the Boston Marathon bombings.

Boston Police Crime Scene Response unit arrived and two members of that unit took several brown paper bags, normally used to store evidence taken from the scene, into the building and left with them full afterwards.

On Monday, the FBI announced they were searching for a man they described as having dark skin, wearing black clothes and a black back-pack who tried to gain entry into a restricted area during the marathon.

It was also reported that he may have had a foreign accent.

The raid came after a Saudi national, who is being treated for burns and shrapnel wounds at hospital, was arrested at the scene.

He had been tackled by a civilian who believed he was acting suspiciously, and he was being interviewed by the FBI.

The Saudi suspect was being cooperative and denying any involvement.

Initially counter-terrorism sources in Boston believed that seven devices were planted across the city – but only two detonated.

A law-enforcement official said late on Monday evening that investigators believe other packages were simply left behind as runners and pedestrians rushed away from the scene in the aftermath of the blasts.

A federal law enforcement official told CNN that both bombs which detonated at the Boston Marathon finish line were small, and initial tests showed no C-4 or other high-grade explosive was used – indicating they were crude devices.

Boston police initially issued an alert for a rental van that may have sought access to the marathon route, and then another alert for a man wearing dark clothing and a hood who was seen leaving the scene of the blasts.

The two bombs raised the specter that terrorism has struck again in the U.S.

After the twin detonations ripped through the cheering crowds, witnesses described the horror.

The fiery twin blasts took place about 12 seconds and about 100 yards apart, knocking spectators and at least one runner off their feet, shattering windows and sending dense plumes of smoke rising over the street and through the fluttering national flags lining the route.

Blood stained the pavement, and huge shards were missing from window panes as high as three stories.

The explosions ripped into an idyllic afternoon finish for the marathon. The first men had passed the finish line 2 hours and 10 minutes after the staggered start, and the first women crossed just 16 minutes later.

The first blast sent a quick plume of smoke two stories high. Runners nearby stopped in their tracks, confused and unsure. After a few seconds later, a second explosion happened a half-block away, with a deep boom caught on television cameras.

Martin Richard, the 8-year-old boy from Dorchester, Massachusetts, waiting at the finish line to give his father a hug, was among three people killed and more than 152 injured when two explosions rocked the Boston Marathon in the worst terrorist atrocity since 9/11.

Martin Richard died after the first of two bombs hidden in trash cans were detonated within 12 seconds of each other during the Patriots’ Day bank holiday yesterday.

Seventeen of the injured are in a critical condition and CNN reported that at least 10 victims have needed amputations. At least 8 of the wounded are thought to be children, including a 2-year-old boy who suffered a head injury.

Another was 11-year-old Aaron Hern, of Martinez, California, who was hit by flying shrapnel in his thigh as he waited for his mother to cross the finish line. He is being treated at Boston Children’s Hospital and is expected to undergo further surgeries.

Investigators do not know of a motive for the bombers, nor do they have a specific suspect. But last night detectives raided a Boston home after a man, said to be of Saudi origin, was arrested at the scene for acting suspiciously and taken to hospital, where he was treated for burns and shrapnel wounds.

The Boston Globe has reported that Martin Richard may very nearly have cheated death after walking out to embrace his father Bill Richard as he went to cross the finishing line.

But when Bill Richard walked on, Martin turned back to rejoin his mother and two of his siblings just as the first bomb exploded.

Martin Richard’s 6-year-old sister, Jane, lost a leg in the blast and his mother, Denise, is in hospital after undergoing brain surgery. His older brother, Henry, 12, believed to be in the 5th grade, escaped injury.

According to 7News, a candle was lit outside the family home and the word “Peace” written on the pavement.

Bill Richard is understood to be a popular community leader in the Boston suburb.

Martin Richard was a keen baseball player, climber and runner and was a member of Savin Hill Little League team.

On Twitter, Maeve O Brien called him “the sweetest little boy I’ve ever met”.

As the FBI took over the investigation, authorities shared no information about a motive or who may have carried out Boston Marathon bombings, and police said they did not have any suspects in custody.

London Marathon organizers have decided to review the Sunday’s race security after two fatal explosions hit the Boston Marathon yesterday, but the event will go ahead, officials say.

At least three people were killed and more than 140 injured by the blasts near the finish of the Boston Marathon.

Sports Minister Hugh Robertson said he was “absolutely confident” the London Marathon could be kept safe.

London had “enormous experience” of delivering major events and the UK had some of the best security professionals in the world, he said.

Hugh Robertson added: “This is one of those instances where the best way to show solidarity with Boston is to continue.”

Home Secretary Theresa May has been briefed on the bombings by Scotland Yard Assistant Commissioner Cressida Dick and MI5 chief Sir Jonathan Evans.

At this stage, there are no plans for a meeting of the UK government’s emergency committee Cobra, but high-level discussions were already planned and will go ahead because of Margaret Thatcher’s funeral on Wednesday, April 17.

The Metropolitan Police said security for the funeral in central London would not be affected by the Boston Marathon explosions and that it was a very different event.

London Marathon chief executive Nick Bitel said in a statement: “We are deeply saddened and shocked by the news from Boston.”

He later said he “fully expected” the London Marathon, which first took place in 1981 and was completed by more than 37,000 people last year, to go ahead.

Nick Bitel said security plans “take account of many contingencies, including this type of threat and incident, but one can’t be complacent and when it has happened, you need to then review those plans you have in place to see what else may be necessary.”

St James’s Palace said Prince Harry would still attend the marathon to make the presentations to the winners.

The London Marathon route, which is lined by hundreds of thousands of spectators every year, starts in Blackheath and finishes near Buckingham Palace, passing some of the capital’s most recognisable landmarks including Tower Bridge, Canary Wharf and Big Ben.

London Mayor Boris Johnson described Boston Marathon bombings as “shocking, cowardly and horrific”.

He has spoken to Met Police Commissioner Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe about the possibility of extra security for the London Marathon.

“We do have robust security measures in place, but given events in Boston it’s only prudent for the police and the organizers of Sunday’s race to re-examine those security arrangements,” he said.

British police say they have also launched a review of security for the Greater Manchester Marathon, due to take place on Sunday, April 28.

Martin Richard, an 8-year-old boy waiting at the Boston Marathon finish line to give his father a hug, was among three people killed and more than 144 injured in the two explosions.

Martin Richard was standing with his mother and sister, who both suffered horrific injuries when bombs hidden in rubbish bins exploded within seconds of each other during the Patriots’ Day bank holiday.

Boston police closed off the city as a “danger zone” as witnesses described the “unspeakable horror” of body parts flying through the air and shoes that “still had flesh in them”.

At least 17 of the injured people are in a critical condition and it is thought as many as 30 victims may have needed amputations or major corrective surgery on maimed limbs.

Today, the US remained on full alert after the worst terrorist outrage since the World Trade Centre towers were destroyed by hijacked jets on September 11, 2001.

President Barack Obama vowed to hunt down the culprits and “hold them accountable”.

In the UK, Scotland Yard confirmed security arrangements were being reviewed ahead of Margaret Thatcher’s funeral on April 17 and London Marathon on April 21.

Video footage showed an explosion going off in the heart of the crowd that had lined the streets of the Massachusetts city yesterday to watch the famous sporting event.

After the blasts, two more suspicious devices were found in the city’s Mandarin Oriental and Lenox hotels. Both were evacuated and the suspected bombs dismantled.

According to the Boston Globe, Martin Richard, from Dorchester, Massachusetts, may very nearly have cheated death after walking out to embrace his father Bill Richard as he went to cross the finishing line.

When his walked on, Martin Richard turned back to rejoin his mother and two of his siblings just as the first bomb exploded. Reports suggest his mother was seriously injured and his sister’s leg was blown off.

Friends held a vigil on Monday night at the neighborhood Tavolo Restaurant in Dorchester for Martin Richard and his mother and sister, who suffered “grievous” injuries in the bombing on Monday afternoon.

According to the Boston Globe, Martin Richard had walked out to hug his father as he went to cross the finishing line.

Afterwards, his father walked on but the little boy went back to rejoin his mom and siblings – at which point the first bomb went off.

Reports suggest that Martin Richard’s mother was terribly injured and his sister’s leg was blown off in the devastating explosion.

The FBI launches a “potential terrorism inquiry” after two explosions hit Boston Marathon finishing line leaving three people dead and at least 140 injured.

Boston police say officers are working around the clock and all leave has been cancelled.

At least 17 people are critically wounded, officials say, and the injuries include several amputations.

One of the dead was an eight-year-old boy, US media said.

In a televised address, President Barack Obama vowed to bring those behind the attack to justice.

“We will find out who did this. We’ll find out why they did this,” the president said.

“Any responsible individuals, any responsible groups, will feel the full weight of justice.”

Although President Barack Obama did not use the word “terrorism”, a White House official later said: “Any event with multiple explosive devices – as this appears to be – is clearly an act of terror, and will be approached as an act of terror.”

The first explosion came at about 14:50 local time on the north side of Boylston Street, about two hours after the winners crossed the line.

There was initial confusion and panic. Some runners fell to the floor while police and bystanders ran to help those caught in the blast.

Then seconds later, another explosion ripped into the crowd further away from the finishing line, between 50 and 100 metres from the first blast.

TV footage showed bloodied runners and spectators being treated at the scene and the road strewn with debris. Rescuers tore down temporary fencing to reach the casualties.

Medical officials speak of at least 140 injured, with injuries including severed limbs, shrapnel wounds, cuts and bruises.

At an initial news conference, Boston Police Commissioner Edward Davis said authorities had received “no specific intelligence that anything was going to happen”.

He urged people to stay indoors and not congregate in large groups.

At a second news conference he said the death toll now stood at three. He said that no suspects were in custody.

A search thought to be related to the inquiry was under way at a flat in a Boston suburb, Boston media reported.

Police said a search warrant was issued on Monday in the Revere district but provided no further details.

Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick said Boston would be “open” on Tuesday but that there would be “a heightened law enforcement presence”.

“There will be random checks of backpacks and other parcels. We are also asking that everyone be on a state of heightened vigilance,” he said.

FBI Special Agent Richard DesLauriers also appeared, saying that the inquiry involved city, state and federal officials, but refusing to give any details of the investigation.

Details of the victims have also not been revealed, however an 8-year-old boy is said to be among the dead. Quoting a family friend, Associated Press said the boy’s mother and sister were also injured as they waited for his father to finish the race.

Officers have already begun poring over video and photographs from the marathon.

Two other unexploded devices were reported to have been found near the end of the race but were safely defused.

State police officer Roupen Bastajian had just finished the race when he heard the blasts.

“I started running toward the blast and there were people all over the floor,” he said.

“We started grabbing tourniquets and started tying legs. At least 25 to 30 people have at least one leg missing, or an ankle missing, or two legs missing.”

A doctor at Massachusetts General Hospital said “several amputations” had been performed there.

As a massive security operation swung into operation, the Federal Aviation Administration barred low-flying aircraft from within 3.5 miles of the site.

Key sites in Washington DC and New York have also seen security tightened.

Officials in Washington said no group or individual had so far said they carried out the attack.

Shortly after the blasts, a fire broke out at Boston’s JFK Library a few miles away from the explosions.

Police said the blaze might have been caused by an incendiary device but it is unclear whether it is related to the explosions.

The annual Boston Marathon this year had a field of about 23,000 runners and was watched by hundreds of thousands of spectators.

Boston Marathon is held on Patriots Day, a Massachusetts state holiday which commemorates the first battles of the American Revolution in 1775.

Meanwhile British police are reviewing security plans for Sunday’s London Marathon, the next major international marathon, following events in Boston.

Asian markets have dropped in early trading after two explosions hit the Boston Marathon finishing line killing three people and injuring dozens more.

Stock indexes fell by as much as 2% in Japan. South Korea and Australia also dropped, as did oil and gold prices.

Earlier on Monday, US markets closed lower after the blasts accelerated a sell-off started by weak economic data.

Analysts said that investors would be more risk averse in coming sessions and would focus on Asia’s problem areas.

“This is a kind of unknown-unknown event and a stark reminder that the world continues to remain unsafe,” said Vishnu Varathan of Japanese bank Mizhuo.

“While it has happened far away from Asia, it is likely to trigger concerns and fears over Asia’s known-unknowns.

“You have the Korean peninsula tensions, the territorial dispute between China and Japan, and other issues in the China Sea which all pose risks if they flare up,” he added.

Asian markets have dropped in early trading after two explosions hit the Boston Marathon finishing line killing three people and injuring dozens more

Faced with these problems, investors reacted to the news of the blasts by trying to cut risks, not least because in recent weeks stock markets in Asia have seen strong gains.

Japan’s Nikkei 225 index was recently trading 1% lower, while South Korea’s Kospi was down 0.9% and Australia’s ASX 200 shed 0.8%.

In the US, all three of the country’s main stock indexes closed lower on Monday. The Dow Jones ended the day down 1.8%, while the S&P shut 2.3% lower and the Nasdaq shed 2.4%.

Oil prices dropped in Asia, with US light crude down by 1.9%, and Brent crude sliding 1.6%. Gold continued to fall, extending Monday’s 10% fall and continuing to hit its lowest levels in two years.

By contrast, the Japanese yen gained against the US dollar because many investors see it as a less risky asset.

“The developments in Boston are likely to trigger an initial reaction of caution,” said Michael McCarthy, chief market analyst at CMC Markets.

The Japanese currency rose as much as 2.5% to 96.61 yen against the US dollar in New York on Monday. It also gained nearly 3% against the euro, rising as high as 125.98 yen against the single European currency.

Analysts said that many large Japanese banks or pension funds tended to sell riskier assets during times of uncertainty, bringing the money back into the country, resulting in an appreciation in the yen’s value.

Knowing this, other global investors also buy the yen, or yen-denominated assets, to benefit from this gain. However, once the risks recede, then investors tended to sell their yen and use the proceeds to again invest in riskier assets.

Analysts said the blasts had further dented investor morale in both Asia and elsewhere, which had already been shaken by weaker-than-expected Chinese and US data.

They also pointed to a number of potential Asian flashpoints that caused investors to be cautious, such as the heightened tensions on the Korean peninsula.

North Korea has recently conducted a nuclear test, and in recent weeks it has also threatened to attack South Korea, Japan and US bases in the region.

Meanwhile, the spat between China and Japan over a set of disputed islands in the East China Sea has flared up. The issue is yet to be resolved and continues to remain a bone of contention between Asia’s two biggest economies.

Analysts have often have warned that an escalation of any of these issues was likely to hurt the region’s economic growth.

“Asia is increasingly relying on intra-regional trade to sustain its economic growth,” said Vishnu Varathan of Mizhuo.

“Any full-blown conflict between Asian nations will hurt trade and could adversely impact economic growth.”

Boston Police Commissioner Edward Davis said at an afternoon press conference that there was a third, uncontrolled explosion at the JFK Library, though there were no injuries reported.

It is being reported that a Saudi-Arabian suspect is being held in custody at a Boston hospital on suspicion of involvement, though reports were quickly quashed by the Boston police department. A shadowy figure was also spotted on CCTV around 20 minutes before the bombs went off.

Eyewitnesses at the scene said there were two loud explosions about five seconds apart, and emergency vehicles crowded the scene.

Police told the Boston Globe that are they still finding “secondary devices”, and pleading with anyone still in the area to leave at once. A controlled explosion was set for outside the city library.

Sources told the New York Post that up to 12 people had been killed in the two blasts, and further reported that a suspect is in custody at a Boston-area hospital and is being closely guarded.

CBS News reports that police are now looking at surveillance video showing someone carrying multiple backpacks into the area about 20 minutes before explosions.

One witness said “there was blood everywhere”.

CNN revealed that families from last December’s Newtown tragedy were at the scene, though none of them were reported injured.

Boston’s Lenox Hotel that serves as the headquarters for the Boston Marathon was locked down on Monday after a security incident near the finish line. Two blasts were heard by reporters in the media center.

Authorities closed off the finish line and urged anyone in the area to stay away from trash bins.

In response to the attacks, both the White House and New York’s Times Square were given extra security measures. The White House released in a statement that President Barack Obama received a briefing from Homeland Security advisor Lisa Monaco and other members of his staff in the Oval Office.

“The president called Boston Mayor Tom Menino and expressed his concern for those who were injured and to make clear that his administration is ready to provide needed support as they respond to this incident.”

House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner is expected to lead a moment of silence in the House from the Speaker’s chair for the victims of the Boston bombing at around 6:30 p.m. EST, and the president is expected to speak at 6:10 p.m. EST.

Andrea Storer, who witnessed the blast, told the Boston Globe: “It was huge. There had to be people killed. There had to be.”

NECN reporter Jackie Bruno posted on Twitter: “I saw people’s legs blown off. Horrific. Two explosions. Runners were coming in and saw unspeakable horror.”
