The Turkish parliament has approved controversial legislation to ban the sale and advertising of alcohol.

The Islamist-rooted ruling AK party says the law will protect the population, particularly young people, from the harmful effects of alcohol.

Critics say it is a new move to impose an Islamic agenda on a secular, though predominantly Muslim, country.

The law bans the sale of alcoholic drinks between 22:00 and 06:00 and bans producers from sponsoring events.

To take effect, the law must be signed by President Abdullah Gul, but the politician – a member of the ruling AKP – is expected to do so soon.

Diageo Plc, the world’s largest distiller of alcoholic beverages, has expressed concern about the legislation.

In 2011, Diageo bought Mey Icki, a producer of the traditional Turkish spirit raki, for $2.1 billion.

Diageo Plc said this week it had bought the company in the belief it was investing in a country “that encouraged foreign investment”.

Turkish PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who does not drink or smoke, said recently that ayran, a non-alcoholic yoghurt drink, was the "national drink" of the Turks

Turkish PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who does not drink or smoke, said recently that ayran, a non-alcoholic yoghurt drink, was the “national drink” of the Turks

In other points of the new law:

  • Alcohol sales will be prohibited within 100 metres (yards) of mosques and schools
  • Images of alcoholic drinks will have to be blurred on television – something that is already done for cigarettes
  • There will be stricter penalties for drink-driving, with drunken drivers with a blood alcohol level above 0.1% facing up to two years’ imprisonment
  • All liquor bottles will have to display warning signs about the harm of alcohol

Turkish PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who does not drink or smoke, said recently that ayran, a non-alcoholic yoghurt drink, was the “national drink” of the Turks.

AKP politician Lutfu Elva, head of the planning and budget commission, defended the law, saying similar restrictions were in place in Scandinavian countries.

But Musa Cam, an MP from the main opposition party, the CHP, said: “No one can be forced to drink or not to drink. This is a religious and ideological imposition.”

Quoted in an article in Turkish newspaper Hurriyet, Musa Cam said: “This is not a struggle against the ills of alcohol but an attempt to redesign the society according to their [AK party] beliefs and lifestyle.”

Hasip Kaplan, a Kurdish MP, warned the law would hurt tourism, which “can’t recover easily once collapsed”, the state-run Anatolia news agency reports.

James Toth, 42, was also put under arrest for a blood alcohol level reported to be .139, well above the legal limit of 0.08.

Reese Witherspoon and James Toth were released on bail at 3:30 in the morning on Friday.

Their initial legal hearing is set for Monday morning in the Atlanta Municipal court.

According to Variety, Reese Witherspoon and James Toth are not expected to report to the judge at their court ordered appearance and are anticipated to, through their attorney, request a postponement.

Reese Witherspoon and James Toth are currently residing in Atlanta to shoot Reese’s new movie The Good Lie.

James Toth was apprehended after midnight on Friday for recklessly weaving across Peachtree Street, in the city of Atlanta.

The police report alleges that he smelled of alcohol and appeared “disheveled”.

After pulling the DUI suspect over, the sobriety test was conducted in a Walgreens parking lot.

Reese Witherspoon is said to have been warned to remain inside her vehicle, while her husband was subjected to the DUI test.

The officer on the scene claims that Reese Witherspoon became clearly agitated and eventually disobeyed his verbal commands.

The officer reported: “Mrs. Witherspoon began to hang out the window and say that she did not believe that I was a real police officer.”

The law enforcer explained in the report: “I told Mrs. Witherspoon to sit on her butt and be quiet.”

But once James Toth was handcuffed, the mother-of-three disembarked from her seat, telling the officer that she was a “US citizen” and that she had the right to “stand on American ground”.

The report then described how Reese Witherspoon resisted him as he grabbed her arms to arrest her.

James Toth is said to have made a verbal attempt to calm his hysterical wife.

The officer’s report further details: “Mrs. Witherspoon asked, <<Do you know my name?>> I answered, <<No, I don’t need to know your name>>. I then added, <<right now>>. Mrs. Witherspoon stated, <<You’re about to find out who I am>>.”

According to the arresting officer: “Mrs. Witherspoon also stated, <<You are going to be on national news>>. I advised Mrs. Witherspoon that was fine.”

James Toth is said to be facing charges for DUI and failure to stay within his lane while on the road.

While Reese Witherspoon’s alleged violation is “disorderly conduct (obstruction)”, which falls under municipal ordinance.

And it’s not the first motor incident for the beloved French star this year.

One of France’s best-known actors for roles in more than a hundred films, Gerard Depardieu recently grabbed headlines for the wrong reasons again.

Just a few months ago a car driver filed a legal complaint for assault and battery against Gerard Depardieu following an altercation in Paris.

The motorist filed a complaint with the local prosecutor’s office in August accusing the star of assault and battery following the alleged incident in the capital’s Sixth Arrondissement, near the Saint Sulpice Church.

After Gerard Depardieu’s scooter allegedly collided with the unnamed driver, an argument ensued.

The motorist claimed Gerard Depardieu punched him in the face, leaving him injured.

An official from the prosecutor’s office said: “There was a confrontation and the driver filed a complaint.”

Bobby Brown was arrested in Georgia back in 1996.

He eventually pleaded guilty to DUI and served eight days in jail.

This new incident comes amidst reports that Bobby Brown and Whitney Houston were planning to remarry.

A source close to the couple, Derrick Handspike told the National Enquirer: “Bobby told me, <<The world may have thought we were history, but the reality is we were never really apart. We’ve never stopped loving each other.>>”

Derrick Handspike also said that Bobby Brown, who is engaged to Alicia Etheridge, told him: “I could have saved her! If I had been with Whitney, she never would have died in that hotel bathtub. I would have never left her alone!”

It’s claimed that Bobby Brown father’s death drew the estranged couple back together, and they were pictured enjoying dinner together in LA with their 18-year-old daughter Bobbi Kristina with daughter just a couple of nights before Whitney Houston’s death.
