Costa Concordia: the largest and most daunting marine salvage operation ever attempted

Almost a year ago, more than 3,000 people were relaxing aboard the opulent cruise liner Costa Concordia at the start of a week-long Mediterranean cruise. Today the ship is the subject of possibly the largest and most daunting marine salvage operation ever attempted.

On Friday 13 January 2012, Costa Concordia heeled over on to its side, with more than 4,000 people on board, just off the coast of the small Italian island of Giglio.

Thirty-two passengers and crew members died in the accident, which unfolded when Capt Francesco Schettino steered the ship too close to shore while trying to show it off to islanders, and hit a rock.

Pockmarked with rust smears, its once bright paintwork bleached by the sun, the hulk of the Costa Concordia makes a forlorn spectacle.

Winter storms have battered its exposed flanks, making the work of the 400-strong salvage team even more difficult.

It was originally planned that the vessel would be removed from Giglio by the spring of 2013. However, work is now expected to be complete “by the end of summer”.

Much of the work so far has been preparatory.

Appendages, steel cables and anchor chains have been welded to the hull by the salvage workers, who are working day and night to recover the 114,000-tonne metal bulk.

No operation on the scale of that to recover the Costa Concordia has ever been attempted. It is being carried out by salvage companies Titan and Micoperi, and will unfold in several stages.

The basic plan is to roll the ship upright and then refloat it using huge metal boxes, or caissons, welded to its sides.

The vessel, which still contains tons of rotting food, furniture, bedding and passengers’ belongings, will then be towed away intact to prevent damage to the environment.

To prepare for the rollover operation, divers have attached heavy steel cables to anchor the ship and prevent it slipping into deeper water.

Large steel plates will be positioned beneath the hull as support to prevent it breaking up while the operation is under way.

In December, the ship’s funnel was removed to allow better access to the ship.

Project director Franco Porcellacchia said: “This is a very delicate and unusual project. We have no reference here.

“At the moment, we are working on the preparation of the seabed so that the ship rotates properly. We’re using grout bags containing sand and cement to make an artificial seabed.”

With the ship stabilized, the rollover is expected to take two days, as it must be done painstakingly slowly to prevent further damage to the weakened hull.

A series of steel platforms is being positioned underneath to cradle the ship when it returns to its upright position.

Once upright, more caissons will be attached to the side that had been submerged, and the water in them will then be replaced with air to give buoyancy and allow the wreck to be towed away.

With the ship considered beyond economic repair, its final destination is expected to be a dry dock in Sicily, where it will be cut up.

Franco Porcellacchia said environmental risks were key concerns.

“Salvage teams do not have access to the inside, but we are working to prevent any substance from inside leaking. So far we have recorded no pollution and the situation is being constantly monitored by the authorities.

“The salvage is a joint venture [between Titan and Micoperi], but that contract is terminated when the ship is raised,” Franco Porcellacchia said.

“Dismantling it is another ball game.”

Ryan Heber: hero teacher talks down teenage gunman who burst into classroom of Taft Union High School

0

Ryan Heber, a science teacher at Taft Union High School in California, has been praised by police for averting a serious shooting incident.

Teacher Ryan Heber and a campus supervisor talked a gunman into putting down his weapon after he had shot and injured one pupil at Taft Union High School.

Police said the gunman had enough ammunition to kill many people.

The injured student was taken to hospital in an air ambulance and is in a critical condition.

The drama started after 09:00 local time when the gunman, also a student, arrived late, armed with a shotgun, at the school in the small town in California’s central valley.

Students and staff telephoned police, but before officers could arrive, the suspect had shot at two people in a class in the science block. One shot missed its target.

Ryan Heber, who had been grazed by a pellet, then intervened.

He and another school official who entered the classroom are reported by US media to have warned the suspect that there would be no shooting in his class – at which point the gunman put down his weapon and police officers arrested him.

“They talked him into putting that shotgun down. He in fact told the teacher, <<I don’t want to shoot you>>, and named the person that he wanted to shoot,” Kern County Sheriff Donny Youngblood said.

“The heroics of these two people goes without saying. They could have just as easily… tried to get out of the classroom and left students, and they didn’t,” he added.

Parents of pupils said the suspect had been suspended last year from the school 120 miles (190 km) north of Los Angeles.

Deputies from the local sheriff”s office and town officials conducted a search of the school and its grounds to make sure no-one else was involved and all other students were safe.

The shooting comes four weeks after a gunman killed 26 pupils and staff at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut.

That incident has provoked a nationwide debate about gun laws in the US. Vice-President Joe Biden has said his task force on gun control will make its recommendations to President Barack Obama as early as Tuesday.

Taft Union High School will be closed for classes on Friday, but will have counselors on campus to talk to worried students.

Former pupils of the school include the distinguished US Air Force pilot, General Gordon Graham, the American football player Russell Letlow and the television actress Jeanne Cooper.

Pro Hugo Chavez rally marks missed inauguration

Crowds of supporters of Venezuela’s President Hugo Chavez have been rallying outside the presidential palace in Caracas, showing their backing for the cancer-stricken leader on the day he was due to be inaugurated for another term.

Supporters wearing red “I am Chavez” T-shirts waved flags as patriotic music blared from speakers.

The swearing-in ceremony has been indefinitely postponed.

Hugo  Chavez, 58, is in hospital in Cuba after undergoing cancer surgery.

The National Assembly on Wednesday voted to give the ailing leader as much time as he needed to recover.

Supreme Court President Luisa Estella Morales said Hugo Chavez could take the oath of office at a later date, adding that Chavez’s re-election had guaranteed “continuity” in government.

Opposition leader Henrique Capriles said the uncertainties thrown up by President Chavez’s absence had not been ended by the court ruling, but he called on his supporters to refrain from taking to the streets in protest at the court’s ruling.

Henrique Capriles said the Supreme Court Justices had got involved in party politics by taking their “decision to solve the governing party’s problem”.

Pola Kinski abused as a child by her father Klaus Kinski

Pola Kinski, the elder daughter of the late German actor Klaus Kinski, has accused her father of sexually abusing her between the ages of 5 and 19.

Pola KInski, 60, told a German magazine she had broken her silence because of the continuing adulation Klaus Kinski enjoyed, more than 20 years after his death.

Klaus Kinski starred in some of the most famous German films of the 1970s and early 1980s, directed by Werner Herzog.

His numerous sexual liaisons with adults were well documented.

Klaus Kinski made a name for himself in spaghetti westerns such as For a Few Dollars More before starring in Herzog films including Aguirre The Wrath of God (1972), Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979) and Fitzcarraldo (1982).

Werner Herzog was not prepared to comment on the revelations, said the director’s brother, Lucki Stipetic.

A biographer of the actor, Christian David, said there had been rumors about the relationship between Klaus Kinski and his daughter Pola for years.

“In Europe, especially in Germany of course, Klaus Kinski has a solid fan base and is considered an idol by quite a few,” he said.

“We will see how this may change in the coming weeks or months.”

Pola Kinski, herself an actress, spoke to Stern ahead of the release of her autobiography, Kindermund (English: The Mouths Of Babes).

“The terrible thing is that he once told me that it was completely natural, that fathers all over the world did that with their daughters,” she said in the interview, published on Thursday.

“He was paying for me to be his little sex object, placed on silk cushions.”

She had kept quiet about the abuse for years, she said, because her father had forbidden her to talk about it.

Now 60, Pola Kinski said she had got to the point where she could no longer stomach the accolades heaped on her “genius” father.

She also wanted, through her book, to help “others who have lived through something similar”.

Germany’s top-selling tabloid Bild commended Pola Kinski as a “heroine” for having had the courage to talk about “what probably thousands of daughters do not dare to say”.

Before the revelations in Stern, Klaus Kinski, who died in 1991 in California aged 65, was best-known for his intense acting style and tempestuous character off-screen.

While some Germans went on social media to voice contempt for the dead actor, there were also fans who found the image conjured up by his daughter hard to believe.

But Christian David, whose biography of Klaus Kinski was published in 2006, defended the daughter’s decision to speak out now.

“Unfortunately, until recently she wasn’t ready to publicly speak about it – thus, I wasn’t able to mention any of it in my book,” he said.

“But Pola was totally entitled to choose the right day to come out on this. We have absolutely no right to blame her for this, and no right to immediately mistrust her or to suspect she would do this just to sell her book.

“Child abuse is a heinous crime, there is no room for forgiveness, and I support a zero tolerance policy.

“All accusations should be investigated, absolutely nobody should be immune, including legendary movie stars.”

There was no immediate comment on Pola Kinski’s book from her half-siblings, Nastassja and Nikolai, when their representatives were contacted by Reuters news agency.

Simon Rattle to leave Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra after his contract expires in 2018

Simon Rattle has announced that he will leave as chief conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra after his contract expires in 2018.

Sir Simon Rattle, who joined the orchestra in 2002, admitted it had not been an “easy decision”.

“In 2018 I will be nearly 64 years old,” the British conductor said.

“As a Liverpool boy, it is impossible not to think of the Beatles’ question, <<Will you still need me.., when I’m 64?>>.”

The 57-year-old conductor went on: “I am sure that then it will be time for somebody else to take on the magnificent challenge that is the Berliner Philharmoniker.

“This was not an easy decision. I love this orchestra and therefore wanted to tell them my decision as early as possible.

“I deeply hope that this will give them enough time to start new plans. I look forward with great pleasure to our next five years together and hopefully many years afterwards.”

Martin Hoffmann, the orchestra’s general manager said it was “very sad news” for the orchestra and the city of Berlin. But he said he had “great respect” for Sir Simon Rattle’s decision.

“With his outstanding musicality and creativity he has filled new listeners with enthusiasm for the orchestra every day and has shaped the national and international perception of the Berliner Philharmoniker as a vital cultural ambassador for Berlin,” he said.

Simon Rattle was born in Liverpool and studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London. He made his Proms debut in 1976 and his opera debut in 1977 at the Glyndebourne Festival.

Between 1980 and 1998, he led the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. He was knighted in 1994.

Simon Rattle appeared at the London 2012 Olympic opening ceremony when he and the London Symphony Orchestra were upstaged by Mr. Bean while playing Chariots of Fire.

Oscar nominations 2013: Lincoln dominates shortlist with 12 nods

Silver Linings Playbook has become the first film to win 2013 Oscar nominations in all four acting categories for more than 30 years.

The comedy drama, starring Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper, received 8 nominations in total.

Steven Spielberg’s drama Lincoln dominated the shortlist with 12, while Ang Lee’s Life of Pi picked up 11.

Nine films vie for the best picture award including action thriller Zero Dark Thirty, Argo and Les Miserables.

The musical, which takes its lead from Victor Hugo’s historical novel set during the Paris uprising, received 8 nominations in total – including nods for stars Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway.

Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained, Beasts of the Southern Wild and French language film Amour complete the list of best picture contenders.

Quentin Tarantino once said Django Unchained, a western which sees Jamie Foxx as a freed slave on a mission to rescue his wife from a Mississippi plantation owner, would not win best picture, but “it’s nice to be invited to the party”.

The ceremony will take place at the Dolby Theatre on February 24.

Emmanuelle Riva and Quvenzhane Wallis became the oldest and youngest nominees in the best actress category at the age of 85 and nine respectively.

Quvenzhane Wallis, who was picked from obscurity to play the lead in Benh Zeitlin’s Sundance winner Beasts of the Southern Wild, was just six when she took the role of a young girl stranded by rising waters and tending to a sick father in a remote corner of Louisiana.

Emmanuelle Riva, a respected film actress in France, plays a retired music teacher afflicted by a stroke in Michael Haneke’s Amour, which won the Palme d’Or at Cannes Film Festival last year.

As well as both films appearing in the best film nominations, Haneke and newcomer Zeitlin won nominations in the best director category.

They will face competition from Spielberg, Ang Lee and Silver Linings Playbook’s David O. Russell. But there was no nomination for Zero Dark Thirty’s Kathryn Bigelow, who was named best director by the National Board of Review in the autumn, and had been considered a frontrunner following nominations at the Baftas and the Golden Globes.

Kathryn Bigelow became the first woman to win the best director Oscar with The Hurt Locker at the Academy Awards in 2010.

Quentin Tarantino also failed to secure a best director nomination.

He said “it bites a little bit, but I got it from BAFTA” – referring to his success in the BAFTA shortlist earlier this week.

Britain’s Tom Hooper – who was named best director for The King’s Speech in 2011 – was also snubbed, for his work on Les Miserables.

“It was a complete shock,” said Working Title’s Eric Fellner.

“But not just for Tom, but also for Kathryn Bigelow for Zero Dark Thirty and Ben Affleck for Argo.”

Prior to the nominations it had been suggested that Skyfall might become the first Bond film to win a best picture nod, but the film was not shortlisted in any of the major categories despite BAFTA nominations for Dame Judi Dench and Javier Bardem earlier this week.

However, Adele did win a place on the best song shortlist and said she felt “like Meryl Streep”, while the film received a further four nominations in the technical categories.

Aside from Emmanuelle Riva and Quvenzhane Wallis, the best actress category is completed by Jennifer Lawrence in Silver Linings Playbook, Naomi Watts in The Impossible and Jessica Chastain, who plays a CIA agent hunting Osama Bin Laden, in Zero Dark Thirty.

Naomi Watts is the only nomination for The Impossible, the real-life story of a family caught up in the devastating 2004 tsunami, she said she was “truly honored”.

“I am so thrilled and humbled with this morning’s wonderful news. The journey of telling Maria Belon’s miraculous story of survival has been an incredible experience.”

Previous Oscar winner Dame Helen Mirren missed out on a best actress nomination for Hitchcock, which leaves Daniel Day-Lewis as the key British hope at this year’s ceremony.

Daniel Day-Lewis, 55, is currently the bookmakers’ favorite to win the best actor award for his role as US president Abraham Lincoln. Should he win, he will become the first actor to win the best actor honor three times, after earlier triumphs with There Will Be Blood (2008) and My Left Foot (1989).

Bradley Cooper, best known for the Hangover films, is among his competition, which also includes Hugh Jackman, Joaquin Phoenix in Paul Thomas Anderson’s cult drama The Master and former winner Denzel Washington, as an alcoholic pilot in The Flight.

All five supporting actors, including Silver Linings’ Robert De Niro, Argo‘s Alan Arkin, Phillip Seymour Hoffman in The Master, Christophe Waltz in Django Unchained and favorite Tommy Lee Jones have won an Oscar previously.

Anne Hathaway leads the supporting actress category for her role as the tragic Fantine, with competition from Amy Adams in The Master, Sally Field in Lincoln, Helen Hunt in The Sessions and Australia’s Jacki Weaver in Silver Linings Playbook.

Animated film The Pirates! Band of Misfits! (also known as Pirates! In An Adventure with Scientists!) may also bring British success for Aardman Animations – of Wallace & Gromit fame – who have previously won four Oscars.

Producer Peter Lord called the nomination “amazing”.

“We tried to do something a little different with The Pirates, in terms of tone and comedy, and it’s just brilliant that the Academy has responded to it in such a wonderful way.”

The Oscars ceremony, which will feature a tribute to 50 years of the James Bond movie franchise, will be hosted by Seth MacFarlane, who created the animated series Family Guy.

The star, who is hosting for the first time, also secured an Oscar nomination on Thursday for best song, having written the lyrics for Everybody Needs A Best Friend from the movie Ted.

Elton John and David Furnish welcome their second child

Elton John and David Furnish have welcomed their second child.

Sir Elton John and David Furnish- who already have a 2-year-old son, Zachary, together – have welcomed another child into the world via a surrogate.

According to the New York Post, the couple used the same California-based surrogate who gave birth to Zachary on Christmas Day 2010.

No further details about the birth or the baby have been revealed.

Last November, it was revealed Elton John and David Furnish were expecting their second child but had decided never to reveal the identity of the surrogate.

A source said: “Elton and David love this lady like a sister and they feel indebted to her for life.

“Naturally she has been well rewarded. But her identity will never be revealed. They are over the moon.”

Elton John, 65, loves being a dad and has previously said he regretted waiting so long to have a child.

He said: “I think it changes everybody. It’s the most wonderful thing that you could possibly go through.

“I regret a little bit that I didn’t do it sooner, but he has changed our lives. Everything is about him now.

“He’s gorgeous, he travels brilliantly, he so loves people, and it makes our lives – he’s the icing on the cake.

“The first thing I do every morning is have breakfast with him. He shares my breakfast. Whatever I have, he wants.”

Harcombe Diet: Why do we overeat when all we want is to be slim?

0

Zoe Harcombe spent a decade piecing together the answer to the question “Why do we overeat when all we want is to be slim?”.

Through experience and research she discovered three very common conditions that cause insatiable food cravings.

You may have heard of them, you may know that you have one or more of them, but you are unlikely to know how they have turned you into a food addict:

Candida: is a yeast that lives in all of us, but it can easily multiply out of control, creating many nasty symptoms – from bloating and fatigue to irritable bowel syndrome and mood swings.

Foods that encourage Candida growth are the ones you crave – bread, fruit, pickled foods, cereal: basically any processed carbohydrates.

The more you give in to the cravings, the more you feed this condition – and the more of a food addict you become.

Food Intolerance: occurs when you have the same foods every day and you literally become intolerant to them, but you crave them to avoid the withdrawal symptoms that occur when you don’t consume them.

The most common intolerances are to wheat and dairy foods – in that order.

We have cereal (wheat) and milk (dairy) for breakfast, sandwiches (wheat) and lattés (dairy) for lunch, pasta for dinner with maybe yogurt for dessert. No wonder wheat and dairy are our biggest problems.

Hypoglycaemia: is suffered by most people, most days at around 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. It’s that “can’t concentrate/must have some food” kind of feeling and it causes intense cravings for carbs – especially sweets and chocolate etc.

When blood glucose levels dip below normal, your body will do whatever it can to get you to eat something – to get the level back up.

When you get that 11 a.m./4 p.m. feeling – you reach for a muffin, or a bar of chocolate. Yet this gives you way more sugar than you need, so you may release too much insulin coping with this unrecognized modern “food” and then your blood sugar level dips again.

This is why many people find that they can’t stop eating once they start – you never manage to get stable blood sugar levels throughout the day.

Two books were to provide the key remaining bits of the puzzle: New Low Blood Sugar And You by Carlton Fredericks and Candida Albicans: Could yeast be your problem? by Leon Chaitow.

The final piece in the jigsaw was a show-stopper. There are many and varied causes of these three conditions, but they all have one cause in common – calorie counting.

Trying to eat less drives people down the route of eating more of the foods that make these problems worse.

Fruit, muesli bars, cereal, low-fat/low-calorie products – things that you think are healthy – are feeding these conditions beautifully. So, start a diet and you will end up a food addict – the pathway is as clear as that.

Zoë Harcombe, author of new book claiming to end food addiction, reveals how she finally won the battle of the bulge
Zoë Harcombe, author of new book claiming to end food addiction, reveals how she finally won the battle of the bulge

And so Phase One of The Harcombe Diet was born. It only needed to be five days long – driven by food intolerance – as any food to which you are intolerant has passed through you in this time.

The core foods of meat, fish, eggs, vegetables, salads, brown rice and Natural Live Yoghurt (the latter helps to fight candida) emerged as the “super foods” that would fight these nasty ailments.

Candida and food intolerance both cause serious water retention, and pounds can be dropped in the first few days – shrinking you by one dress size in the process.

More typically, people lose 7 lb in five days – but without going hungry or counting a single calorie. In fact, it is vital that you eat plenty – trying to eat less will make you overeat faster than you can say “I’m starving!”.

Zoe Harcombe said: “Within days, not even weeks, of working out Phase One, I had reached my natural weight of eight stone and I have been there ever since. I could never have imagined that I could eat as much as I do and stay at my perfect weight so easily – not least while eating a 100g bar of 85 per cent dark chocolate every day!

“To say this has changed my life is an understatement. I wasted a decade of my life obsessed with food but terrified of it at the same time. I would turn down social invitations because I felt fat and then sit at home and stuff my face instead.

“I started every day thinking <<today will be different>>, but it never was because I simply did not know why I could not resist the urge to eat – not everything, but quite particular things: biscuits, chocolate, cakes, crisps…you know the foods I mean!

“I hated myself and beat myself up for my assumed lack of willpower, but it wasn’t my fault. I was an addict, and only when I understood the cause of the addiction could I overcome the causal conditions and get back in control of food.”

Freedom from any addiction is wonderful. Freedom from food addiction is the best thing of all, as we have to eat – we just need to be able to control what we eat and not have what we eat control us.

And so Zoe Harcombe wrote Why Do You Overeat? When All You Want Is To Be Slim.

She said: “I put my email address in the first edition of the first book – thinking that about 20 people would read it.

“Hundreds of emails later I realized that people were losing several pounds in Phase One, then going on to lose several more in Phase Two – and still keeping this weight off.”
Some meal ideas on the Harcombe diet:

Breakfasts: Bacon & egg; rice cereal; yoghurt; porridge

Lunch: Salade Niçoise; frittata; rice salad; roast chicken with coleslaw

Dinner: Steak & chargrilled veg; butternut squash curry & brown rice; rice pasta & tomato sauce; Pork chops & roasted vegetables

Tel Aviv car explosion injures 4 people on Menachem Begin Street

At least four people were injured in a car explosion in the Israeli city of Tel Aviv, on Menachem Begin Street, a major thoroughfare.

Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said there was a strong possibility the blast was a criminal incident and a “settling of scores” but did not rule out political violence.

Israeli radio said the car belonged to the suspected head of an organized crime gang.

The black Mazda car burst into flames after being targeted by a motorcyclist nearby, Haaretz newspaper reported.

An empty bus nearby was also damaged in the explosion.

Israeli media say the car’s owner did not appear to have been in the vehicle at the time.

Correspondents say that in recent years Israel has become a ferocious battleground for criminal gangs involving several mafia families.

Wednesday’s blast initially prompted fears of a Palestinian militant attack. A blast in the city allegedly carried out by an Israeli Arab injured 15 people in November last year, during Israel’s campaign against Hamas militants in the Gaza Strip.

Britney Spears has left The X Factor USA after just one season, as it has been claimed show boss Simon Cowell was about to fire her for being “boring”.

Britney Spears, 31, jumped before she was pushed as Simon Cowell, 53, made plans to terminate her $15 million contract after her judging style on the show had been heavily criticized, sources close to the show confirmed.

A source close to production explained: “Britney and her team knew it was unlikely she’d be asked back as a judge.

“The producers have already been making other plans for next season over the holidays.

“The reality is that toward the end of last season the main players knew they wanted to replace both Britney and LA Reid. LA Reid wasn’t at the top of his game in second season and he knew that.”

Britney Spears’ judging was heavily criticized throughout the last season, with critics dubbing her “boring”.

And show insiders complained that she insisted on having breaks every few contestants during auditions and was often unengaged in the whole process.

It was felt Britney Spears didn’t connect with her contestants, despite being employed to mentor them. Insiders complained that she would barely look at them on stage during the live round of the show.

“Most people didn’t expect Britney to make it through the season as its a demanding role but she did her best,” said a source.

Although the mother-of-two only lasted on the judges panel for one season it was an incredibly lucrative one.

A previous report in Us Weekly pointed out that her $15 milllion contract had a lot to do with Simon Cowell’s decision, with one insider telling the publication: “They paid all that for her to say <<amazing>> and offer half-claps.”

At one time Simon Cowell had intimated to E! that he’d have Britney Spears back despite telling them he’s “pro change”, he said: “I don’t know yet, to be honest with you. I haven’t had the conversation with her whether she’d want to, what other commitments she’s got.”

Fellow judge L.A. Reid – a long-standing judge – already announced his departure to focus on his record label.

Midas-alike Simon Cowell has struggled to repeat the success of the smash hit British show since it debuted across the Atlantic in the autumn of 2011.

After the initial disappointing season, Simon Cowell fired judges Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger and host Steve Jones in January.

He then went all out to get a big name signing; and nobody could argue with Britney’s pedigree when she signed on the dotted line for the svengali.

Not only is she one of the biggest pop stars in the world; but her soap opera past lends the blonde an inherent fascination lacking in other stars.

But sadly that never translated into her on-screen presence, and Simon Cowell’s coup became a damp squib.

The blonde flubbed lines and often seemed disconnected from the the show’s narrative.

The December 20 second season finale was watched by 9.6 million viewers, down 18% from the first season finale.

Despite the setbacks, Simon Cowell himself is unlikely to be looking for another job anytime soon.

Artists discovered by the X Factor have sold more than 100 million records worldwide, including 110 No. 1’s, 270 Top 10, and 501 Top 50 releases – and the show has been commissioned in 41 territories.

Simon Cowell – who according to Forbes made $90 million last year alone – also saw his TV production business, Simco, boosted by 138% last year, mainly due to the launch of the Fox TV talent show.

His company also reported that total turnover almost doubled to £54.6 million ($87.89 million) in the year to 31 March 2012.

Mingus: most distant Type 1a supernova ever seen

Astronomers have spotted Mingus, the most distant supernova ever seen.

Mingus was described at the 221st American Astronomical Society meeting in the US.

These lightshows of dying stars have been seen since ancient times, but modern astronomers use details of their light to probe the Universe’s secrets.

Ten billion light-years distant, Mingus will help shed light on so-called dark energy, the force that appears to be speeding up cosmic expansion.

Formally called SN SCP-0401, the supernova was something of a chance find in a survey carried out in part by the Supernova Cosmology Project (SCP) using the Hubble space telescope, first undertaken in 2004.

But the data were simply not good enough to pin down what was seen. As David Rubin of the University of California, Berkeley, lead author on the study, told the AAS meeting, “for a sense of brightness, this supernova is about as bright as a firefly viewed from 3,000 miles away”.

Further news had to wait until astronauts installed the Wide Field Camera 3 on the Hubble telescope in 2009 and again trained it on the candidate, which had – in an SCP tradition of naming supernovae after composers – already been named after jazz musician Charles Mingus.

“Unfortunately, it took the development of Wide Field Camera 3 to bring home what the [2004] measurements meant,” said David Rubin.

“The sensitivity is a few times better, which makes a huge difference, and we have a much cleaner image.”

The team went on to confirm that the supernova was in fact a Type 1a – a particular class of exploded star whose light occurs in such a regular way that it is known as a “standard candle”.

What interests astronomers trying to find ever more distant Type 1a supernovae – distant both in space and in time – is the chance to compare them to better-known, more local supernovae.

“We were able to watch these changes in brightness and spectral features for an event that lasted just a few weeks almost 10 billion years ago,” said Saul Perlmutter, who leads the Supernova Cosmology Project.

Prof. Saul Perlmutter shared the 2011 Nobel prize in physics for work with Type 1a supernovae that proved our Universe is speeding up in its expansion.

Elucidating the mysterious force, “dark energy”, which has been invoked as the cause of the expansion, will require careful study of supernovae all the way back to the epoch of the earliest stars.

“We’re seeing two-thirds of the way back to the beginning of the Universe, and we’re getting a little bit of history where the physics of what makes a supernova explode have to all work out the same way there as they do near here,” he told the meeting.

The group’s study is published online and will appear in the Astrophysical Journal on January 20.

The meeting also heard from Joshua Frieman, director of the Dark Energy Survey – a five-year mission using the most powerful camera ever trained on the skies to get to the bottom of the dark matter mystery.

The phone-booth-sized Dark Energy Camera snapped its first images in September 2012 and will begin its formal mission in September this year, looking not only at supernovae but also at three other dark-energy signatures in the cosmos.

Prof. Joshua Frieman said the distant supernova result fits neatly into a story that he hoped the Dark Energy Survey would explore in great detail.

“What they’re doing is using the Hubble telescope to go really deep – we’re going to use the Dark Energy Survey to go very broad,” he explained.

“They’re finding tens of supernovae at these high [distances], and we’re going to find thousands of supernovae not quite as deep. You really need both of those together to really make progress in trying to figure out why the Universe is speeding up.”

Killer whales trapped under Hudson Bay ice in Inukjuak

Authorities of Inukjuak, a remote Quebec fishing village, have asked Canada’s government to help free a dozen killer whales trapped in a vast stretch of ice inside Hudson Bay.

Locals in Inukjuak, 900 miles (1,500 km) north of Montreal, say the whales are breathing through a hole in the ice.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada said it is sending a team on Thursday to evaluate the situation.

A hunter in the area first spotted the whales on Tuesday, a day after locals say the bay froze.

Dozens of villagers made the one-hour snowmobile ride on Tuesday to see the whales.

“It appears from time to time that they panic,” Mayor Peter Inukpuk told broadcaster CBC.

“Other times they are gone for a long time, probably looking for another open space, which they are not able to find.”

Inukjuak’s public safety officer told CTV’s website that the whales should not even be in the area in January.

“We’ve only seen those kind of whales in the summer time, never in the winter time,” Simeonie Nalukturuk said.

Several villagers said the hole appeared to be shrinking as the ice froze further.

Peter Inukpuk has asked for an icebreaker to free the whales – the Fisheries and Oceans Canada said it was still considering the situation.

“Fisheries and Oceans Canada is assessing the situation and are exploring every possible option, but will only be in a position to determine what – if anything – can be done once our specialists arrive on site,” spokesman Frank Stanek said in a statement.

A spokeswoman for the department told the CBC that icebreaker ships were “really busy with the ice conditions that we have in other regions of our country”.

She added that three commercial ships had become stuck in ice along the St Lawrence River in Quebec this week.

Urooj Khan’s wife tried to cash $1 M cheque in the days after he was found dead from cyanide poisoning

0

The family of Urooj Khan, the lottery winner who was poisoned with cyanide the day after he collected his $1 million jackpot, are at war with his widow amid claims she tried to cash the winning cheque in the days after his death.

Urooj Khan’s brother, ImTiaz Khan, has alleged that Shabana Ansari attempted to claim the windfall “shortly” after Urooj’s death but was unable to do so.

ImTiaz Khan also claimed that his late brother and Shabana Ansari were not even married, meaning that she could miss out on half of the lottery prize to which she is entitled.

In another sign the family are tearing themselves apart, Urooj Khan’s sister, Meraj Khan, has launched a legal bid to take guardianship of his daughter Jasmeen from his first marriage.

Meraj Khan wants custody of the 17-year-old even though she appears to have lived with step-mother Shabana Ansari at her home in Chicago for most of her life.

Shabana Ansari’s lawyer said his client had been questioned for four hours by police and had “nothing to hide”.

The developments come as the Cook County Medical Examiner is expected to seek a court order to exhume Urooj Khan’s body later this week.

Family members said they do not wish to see the body if it goes ahead because it will be too traumatizing.

It is a tragic turn of events from July 19 last year when a delighted Urooj Khan, 46, collected the over-sized cheque from Illinois State Lottery officials at the 7-Eleven where he bought the winning scratchcard.

The event has revealed the first picture of Urooj Khan’s 32-year-old wife Shabana Ansari who moved to the U.S. after marrying him 12 years ago.

She can be seen wearing a green traditional Indian dress with a scarlet scarf. Her step-daughter Jasmeen Khan stands beside her wearing a grey sari.

Urooj Khan is seen smiling widely and told the TV cameras he was going to use the money to pay bills, donate to St Jude’s Children’s Hospital in Chicago and grow his dry-cleaning business.

After taxes, the prize money amounted to $425,000 which he opted to take in a lump sum.

The day after receiving his winning cheque, Urooj Khan came home from work and ate a traditional Indian Kofta curry that his wife had prepared.

He died a short time later. The initial examination by the Cook County Medical examiner found he had died of heart disease or natural causes.

After his death, the winning cheque was eventually cashed on August 15. However, in probate documents filed with the Cook County Court, ImTiaz Khan suggested that Shabana Ansari had tried to do so before.

Urooj Khan pictured with wife Shabana Ansari, daughter Jasmeen and his $1 million winnings shortly before his death from cyanide poisoning
Urooj Khan pictured with wife Shabana Ansari, daughter Jasmeen and his $1 million winnings shortly before his death from cyanide poisoning

In a September filing, ImTiaz Khan writes: “Ms Shabana Ansari is in possession of the lottery cheque and is concerned she may attempt to cash the cheque again, as she did shortly after the decedent’s [Urooj Khan’s] death, even though the estate is entitled to the funds.”

ImTiaz Khan also alleges that his brother’s ‘only known heir is his daughter Jasmeen Khan’ and pointedly states that Shabana Ansari is not her biological mother.

He says he wants her to get her “fair share” and alleges “there remains question as to whether [Urooj Khan] was married to Ms Ansari”.

His filing reads: “[ImTaiz Khan’s] counsel was informed by Citibank that [Urooj Khan’s] spouse, Ms Shabana Ansari, has been in communication with the bank and believes Ms Ansari may be attempting to control [Urooj’s] accounts.”

The papers also state: “Meraj Khan, [Urooj Khan’s] sister, filed a petition for Guardian of the minor [Jasmeen] on September 19, 2012.”

As a result of the filings last year, the jackpot was frozen and will remain so for the next three months.

In response, Shabana Ansari filed documents of her own which stated she was indeed married to Urooj Khan and the court agreed, making her the administrator of the estate.

The remaining three months will allow family members to make their case to the lawyer organizing how funds will be handed out. In normal circumstances, 50% goes to the spouse and 50% to the children, unless there are grounds for complaint.

In one sense Urooj Khan, who emigrated from India in the 1980s, should not even have been gambling in the first place because of his Islamic faith.

He had recently returned to Chicago from the Hajj pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia, inspired to lead a better life and had sworn off buying lottery tickets – except just this once.

His death would have gone unnoticed as the first toxicology report said Urooj Khan died of heart disease.

However, two months later, a relative called the medical examiner demanding a fresh inquiry into the poisoning as he “didn’t accept it was going to be a natural death”.

During the dramatic phone call, the family member flatly rejected the original ruling and ordered investigators to have another look.

A second, more thorough toxicology report turned up the cyanide poisoning as cause of death.

Deborah Blum, a poison expert whose book The Poisoner’s Handbook is being made into a PBS TV series, said that Urooj Khan would have been in “absolute agony” after eating the cyanide.

Deborah Blum, a former chemist, said: “A good lethal dose of cyanide will kill you in ten minutes. A mid-range dose and people die within the hour. For a poison that’s pretty fast.

“Cyanide poisoning is a nasty death. There is an enzyme which allows your cells to breathe and the cyanide wipes that enzyme out.

“It suffocates you cell by cell. Symptoms include seizures, extreme shortness of breath and usually cardiac arrest.”

In her latest interview, Shabana Ansari told the Chicago Sun-Times that she hopes “God will reveal the truth”.

Shabana Ansari has previously paid tribute to her husband as a “workaholic” and vowed to keep his laundry business open to honor his memory.

Nicolas Sarkozy to be investigated over secrecy breach in Karachi affair

French ex-President Nicolas Sarkozy is to be investigated over accusations of a breach of secrecy in an alleged corruption case, the “Karachi affair”, agency AFP reports.

Nicolas Sarkozy’s office had said in 2011 that the president was not named in any of the case documents.

Plaintiffs in the case say that was a violation of confidentiality.

The long-running investigation stems from the death of 11 French engineers in a bombing in Pakistan in 2002, which may have been linked to French bribes.

North Korea urged to embrace internet freedom during Eric Schmidt visit

Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt has urged North Korea to end its self-imposed isolation and allow its citizens to use the internet.

Speaking after a visit to Pyongyang, Eric Schmidt said North Korea would continue to lag economically unless it embraced internet freedom.

Eric Schmidt was part of a US delegation led by former state governor Bill Richardson.

They also urged North Korea to end nuclear and missile tests, and raised the case of a US detainee.

Bill Richardson, also a former US envoy to the UN, has visited North Korea several times in the past, most recently in December 2010. On two occasions he helped secure the release of detained US nationals.

Speaking at a media briefing in Beijing after arriving from North Korea, Eric Schmidt said he had been in Pyongyang to discuss a free and open internet.

Internet use is highly restricted in North Korea – few people have access to a computer and most users can only access a national intranet rather than the world wide web.

Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt has urged North Korea to end its self-imposed isolation and allow its citizens to use the internet

“As the world becomes increasingly connected, their decision to be virtually isolated is very much going to affect their physical world, their economic growth and so forth, and it will make it harder for them to catch up economically,” he said.

“Once the Internet starts, citizens in a country can certainly build on top of it. The government has to do something. It has to make it possible for people to use the internet which the government in North Korea has not yet done.”

Bill Richardson said the delegation had raised the case of detainee Korean-American Kenneth Bae, who was arrested in November in circumstances that are not clear.

North Korea has in the past released detained Americans after high-profile US visits, but Bill Richardson said he had been unable to meet Kenneth Bae.

“We strongly urged the North Koreans to proceed with a moratorium on ballistic missiles and possible nuclear test,” he also said.

The delegation’s Pyongyang trip comes less than a month after North Korea put a satellite into orbit using a three-stage rocket – a move condemned by the US as a banned test of long-range missile technology.

The US government has described the visit as “not particularly helpful”.

“We continue to think the trip is ill-advised,” US State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said on Monday.

Half of world’s food ends up being thrown away

A UK-based report has found that as much as half of the world’s food, amounting to two billion tonnes worth, ends up being thrown away.

The Institution of Mechanical Engineers said the waste was being caused by poor storage, strict sell-by dates, bulk offers and consumer fussiness.

The study also found that up to 30% of vegetables in the UK were not harvested because of their physical appearance.

Dr. Tim Fox from the Institution of Mechanical Engineers said the level of waste was “staggering”.

The report said that between 30% and 50% of the 4 billion tonnes of food produced around the world each year went to waste.

It suggested that half the food bought in Europe and the US was thrown away.

A UK-based report has found that as much as half of the world’s food, amounting to two billion tonnes worth, ends up being thrown away

Dr. Tim Fox, head of energy and environment at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, said: “The amount of food wasted and lost around the world is staggering. This is food that could be used to feed the world’s growing population – as well as those in hunger today.

“It is also an unnecessary waste of the land, water and energy resources that were used in the production, processing and distribution of this food.

“The reasons for this situation range from poor engineering and agricultural practices, inadequate transport and storage infrastructure through to supermarkets demanding cosmetically perfect foodstuffs and encouraging consumers to overbuy through buy-one-get-one-free offers.”

He added: “If you’re in the developing world, then the losses are in the early part of the food supply chain, so between the field and the marketplace.

“In the mature, developed economies the waste is really down to poor marketing practices and consumer behavior.”

The report – Global Food; Waste Not, Want Not – also found that huge amounts of water, totaling 550 billion cubic metres, were being used to grow crops that were never eaten.

The institution said the demand for water for food production could reach 10 to 13 trillion cubic metres a year by 2050.

The United Nations predicts there will be an extra three billion mouths to feed by 2075 as the global population swells to 9.5 billion.

Dr. Tim Fox added: “As water, land and energy resources come under increasing pressure from competing human demands, engineers have a crucial role to play in preventing food loss and waste by developing more efficient ways of growing, transporting and storing foods.

“But in order for this to happen governments, development agencies and organization like the UN must work together to help change people’s mindsets on waste and discourage wasteful practices by farmers, food producers, supermarkets and consumers.”

PKK female activists shot dead at Kurdish Institute in Paris

Three PKK female activists have been found dead with gunshot wounds to the head in the Kurdish Institute of Paris.

One of the women is said to be a co-founder of the militant Kurdish separatist movement, the PKK.

French Interior Minister Manuel Valls described the killings as “intolerable”.

The motive for the shootings is unclear. Some 40,000 people have died in the 25-year conflict between the Turkish state and the PKK.

However, Turkey has recently begun talks with the jailed PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan, with the aim of persuading the group to disarm.

“The scene [of the crime] could give rise to the idea that this was an execution, but the investigation will have to establish the exact circumstances of this incident,” a police source told French reporters.

A Kurdish news website in France identifies one of the women as Sakine Cansiz, a founder of the PKK, while another is said to be a representative of the Brussels-based National Congress of Kurdistan and the third is a young activist.

Manuel Valls said he would visit the scene of the shootings.

“These assassinations are intolerable, and I hope the inquiry will make rapid progress but let’s allow the investigators to do their work,” he told France-Info radio.

The Federation of Kurdish Associations in France has called for a demonstration in Paris.

Wilko Johnson diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer

Former Dr. Feelgood guitarist Wilko Johnson has been diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer.

Wilko Johnson, 65, has vowed to honor his touring commitments and keep playing as long as he can.

His manager posted a statement on the star’s official Facebook page, adding he had declined chemotherapy.

Manager Robert Hoy said: “He said he wants to make the very best of the time he has left, playing and partying when he can.

“He is currently in good spirits and is not yet suffering any physical effects and can expect to enjoy at least another few months of reasonable health and activity.

“Wilko wishes to offer his sincere thanks for all the support he has had over his long career.

“From those who have worked with him to, above all, those devoted fans and admirers who have attended his live gigs, bought his recordings and generally made his life such an extraordinarily full and eventful experience.”

Following his diagnosis, Wilko Johnson decided to fly first class to Japan, where he has several scheduled tour dates.

He also intends to complete a new album, a mini French tour and play some farewell gigs in his native Britain.

Wilko Johnson is also planning to release a live DVD, which was filmed on his last UK tour.

His diagnosis in the new year comes after he was forced to cancel a gig in Canvey Island, Essex, in November after falling ill.

Wilko Johnson was known for his unique, choppy guitar style, having learned to play right-handed, despite being left-handed.

He played and wrote with Dr. Feelgood in the mid 1970s, on albums including Down by the Jetty, Malpractice, Stupidity and Sneakin’ Suspicion.

After founding the band Solid Senders in 1977, he went on to join Ian Dury’s The Blockheads in 1980.

In recent years, Wilko Johnson has played a mute executioner in Game Of Thrones.

Wilko Johnson, who lives in his home county of Essex, was left widowed when his wife Irene lost her battle with cancer in 2004.

The couple have a son Simon.

Denis Burakov killed in zorbing accident after giant inflatable ball sped out of control and plunged off a cliff

Denis Burakov was killed in a horrifying accident when a giant inflatable ball in which he and another man were rolling down a mountain plunged off a cliff at a ski-resort in southern Russia.

Father-of-two Denis Burakov, 27, married with two young daughters, broke his neck and spine in the zorbing accident, say reports.

His companion Vladimir Shcherbov, 33, was hospitalized with concussion and multiple lacerations to the head and body, but miraculously was later released.

The so-called “orb” was supposed to come to a halt at the bottom of a gentle snowy piste, designed for the sport, which originates in New Zealand.

But in a terrifying accident filmed by the victim’s friends, it lurched first to the right and then to the left.

As he got into the giant ball, an unnamed friend – who filmed the horror – is heard saying: “Denis, you’ll be like Jackie Chan in the Armour of God movie!”

An instructor is asked how far the “orb” can go, replying “not that far” and explaining there was a man lower down the mountain ready to catch it if it went off track.

But as it is pushed down the slope, a man’s voice is heard saying: “Oh f***, it’s gone in the wrong direction again.”

Suddenly the male voice screams: “Hold it, hold it! Hold!”

Then he says: “Ah well, it’s OK, it’ll stop by itself.”

The ball crashes through rocks and teeters on the edge of ravine – before disappearing from view, over the cliff.

The friend filming the death ride plunge asks: “What’s going on there?”

The voice replies: “Nothing.”

But then calmly adds: “A catastrophe.”

At this the footage stops.

Denis Burakov was killed in a horrifying accident when a giant inflatable ball plunged off a cliff at Dombai ski-resort
Denis Burakov was killed in a horrifying accident when a giant inflatable ball plunged off a cliff at Dombai ski-resort

At terrifying speed, the ball had plunged down Ganachhirskiy Gorge in the Dombai resort complex in Russia’s North Caucasus mountain range.

Falling steeply and battered by rocks, it was pulled down relentlessly by gravity.

“The orb went on for about one and a half kilometres, jumping on the rocks and hitting them,” said an aide to local police commander Sergei Shuvayev .

It came to rest on a frozen lake called Peacock’s Eye.

Surrounded by thick woodland it took rescuers an agonizing long time to reach the stricken men, and drag the orb onto firm ground.

When they got there, Denis Burakov from Pyatigorsk, was still alive but he died on the way to hospital on the day of the incident, January 3.

His companion survived.

“He was extremely lucky to get away so lightly,” said a local report.

“As for whatever they felt falling down the slope it is hard even to imagine. Some compare the pressure to what cosmonauts feel,” said the Stavropol edition of Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper.

A probe has been opened into criminal negligence causing death on the part of the extreme sports organizers.

The maximum penalty is ten years in prison.

Astonishingly there were no barriers to prevent the out of control orb rolling relentlessly down the mountain.

Friends said that he had gone on a skiing holiday following the New Year.

“He became intrigued about the orb and the man said the trips were only 300 roubles – and that it was great fun,” said an onlooker.

“Denis was known to love extreme adventures,” said a friend.

He enjoyed visiting the mountains in winter and summer.

It was not immediately clear if his wife, Ekaterina, and his young daughters were with him in Dombai.

Beauty expiry dates: women keep make-up for 6 years after expiry date, leaving them at risk of infection

A British survey reveals women keep hold of their make-up products for six years after their expiry date – behavior that could potentially be a ticking health time bomb.

Many women are holding onto their make-up treasures much longer than the use-by date, exposing them to toxins and bacteria, which lead to unnecessary breakouts and risk of eye infections.

Eyeshadow was revealed as the item that spends the longest time languishing at the bottom of make-up bags, with women keeping hold of them for seven years – nearly six years too long.

Eye shadow t is also one of the worst culprits for spreading infections as it is applied close to the eye.

Next worst was lipstick and liquid foundation, which are kept for 4 years, and over 3 years respectively, which is more than three years longer than they should be kept.

Mascara is one of the worst culprits for spreading eye infections and was seen to be kept nearly two years past its use by date, and eyeliner is kept three years too long on average.

The most frequently replenished beauty products were face powder, blusher and bronzer but even they were kept a year longer than they should be according to the survey.

Emma Leslie, Beauty Editor at Escentual.com who carried out the survey, said: “We’re all guilty of clinging on to lip and eye colors in the hope they come back into fashion but make-up can easily become a breeding ground for bacteria like satphylococcus aureus and staphylococcus epidermis.

“Beauty products that surround the eye hold the greatest risk of infection and can cause bacterial conjunctivitis and blepharitis, an inflammation of the eyelid.

“So it’s alarming to learn that British women are holding onto eyeshadow more than five years past the expiration date.

“Liquid foundation, blusher, bronzer, concealer and face powder past expiration dates can clog up pores with bacteria, which can cause irritations, break-outs and rashes.”

A British survey reveals women keep hold of their make-up products for six years after their expiry date

In the most extreme cases – 6% of women admitted keeping eyeshadow for more than 14 years.

Seventeen per cent admitted to owning mascara seven or eight years old and 7% of respondents confessed to having eyeliner more than 14 years old.

Women have an average of three to six lipsticks at one time, and lipsticks are kept for an average of four years and eight months – which is more than three years past the expiry date.

These can be a breeding ground of cold sores, especially if women have ever shared their lipstick, and 12% of women claim they’ve kept their lippy for seven to eight years and 5% for 10 to 12 years.

Even with face powder, the least hoarded beauty item, a substantial 12% admitted to holding onto the product for 6-7 years.

The maximum amount of time you should keep each product

Eyeshadow – 1 year

Lipstick – 6 months – 1year

Liquid Foundation – 6 months

Eyeliner – 1 year

Mascara – 4 months

Concealer – 8 months

Blusher and Bronzer – 2 years

Kate Middleton and Prince William’s daughter will be a Princess as Queen Elizabeth II issues the Letters Patent

Queen Elizabeth II has formally declared that the future daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will be a Princess.

With a long-awaited royal baby due in late spring or early summer, the Queen today issued what is known as a Letters Patent to announce that Prince William and Kate Middleton’s baby would become an HRH – Her Royal Highness – even if she is a girl.

In doing so the Queen rectified a century-old anomaly that meant a royal daughter would not automatically become a princess.

A decree made by King George V in 1917 stipulated that that while a son would become a prince, a daughter would not become a princess.

King George had ordered that the titles HRH and Prince and Princess should be restricted to the children of the sovereign, the children of the sovereign’s sons and the eldest son of the eldest of the Prince of Wales.

Royal sources said the Queen felt it was time such a long-standing imbalance was formally rectified.

The Queen’s proclamation, issued through the House of Lords on December 31 last year but only made public today reads: “The Queen has been pleased by Letters Patent under the Great Seal of the Realm dated 31 December 2012 to declare that all the children of the eldest son of The Prince of Wales should have and enjoy the style, title and attribute of Royal Highness with the titular dignity of Prince or Princess prefixed to their Christian names or with such other titles of honor.”

While the announcement is no great surprise, it is, nevertheless, an important milestone for the future third-in-line-to-the-throne.

Letters Patent are a type of legal instrument in the form of a published written order issued by the monarch. Their name derives from the Latin pateo, meaning exposed and accessible.

They are a form of public proclamation and a rare exercise of extra-parliamentary power by the sovereign, known as royal prerogative.

Prior to the establishment of parliament the sovereign ruled absolutely by the issuing of his or her personal written orders.

That said, such documents – which are rare nowadays – tend to be issued with informal government approval.

The Letters Patent would have been marked with the Great Seal of the Realm, the chief seal of the Crown, used to show the monarch’s approval of important State Documents.

Any document relating to a close member of the Royal Family requires the use of a unique blue seal.

Buckingham Palace refused to comment on the timing of the announcement and whether it meant that Kate Middleton was now safely past the crucial 12-week stage of pregnancy.

However well-placed royal sources suggested that the Queen had been keen to do for some time.

Kate Middleton, who celebrated her 31st birthday yesterday, was taken into hospital in early December suffering from acute pregnancy-related sickness and has retained a low profile ever since.

Last month a new law was published – the Succession to the Crown Bill – which end the system of male primogeniture, meaning the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s first child will become monarch whether they are a boy or a girl.

Apophis asteroid makes close pass to Earth

Apophis, a 300m-wide asteroid, is making a close pass to the Earth.

Apophis – named after the Egyptian demon of destruction and darkness – has been put on a watch list by scientists.

They have calculated that in 2036 there is a very small chance it could collide with our planet.

However, its current fly-by is at a safe distance of about 14 million km – but this is close enough for astronomers to study the space rock and assess its future risk.

Asteroid 99942 Apophis will not be visible with the naked eye, but space enthusiasts can watch it online via the Slooh space camera’s website.

The large rocky mass was first discovered in 2004. At the time, it raised alarm when scientists calculated that it had a one-in-45 chance of smashing into the Earth in 2029.

Later revisions, lifted this threat; instead on the Friday 13 April 2029, it will make a close pass at a distance of about 30,000km.

However, astronomers say there is still a one-in-200,000 chance that it could strike Earth in 2036.

Professor Alan Fitzsimmons, an astronomer at Queen’s University Belfast, UK, said: “In 2029, it will pass so close to us that Earth’s gravity will change its orbit.

“Most of the potential orbits it will end up on will mean we are safe for the next 100 years. But there is a small region of space – something we call a keyhole – and if it passes through that keyhole in 2029, it will come back and hit us on 13 April in 2036.”

If this happened, it would strike the Earth with 100 times the energy in our largest nuclear bombs, said Prof. Alan Fitzsimmons.

Astronomers are using the current close encounter as an opportunity to study the asteroid, so they can improve their calculations to predict its future path.

Prof. Alan Fitzsimmons said: “While [the asteroid] is relatively close to the Earth, astronomers can ping it with radar. Radar measurements are incredibly accurate: we get the distance to the asteroid very, very precisely, and we can also get its velocity relative to us. And these two things let us pin its orbit down very precisely.”

Researchers are becoming increasingly interested in potentially hazardous asteroids.

So far they have counted more than 9,000 near-Earth asteroids, and they spot another 800 new space rocks on average each year.

Prof. Alan Fitzsimmons said learning more about them was vital.

“At some point, we are going to find an asteroid big enough that it could cause damage at ground level if we let it hit,” he explained.

“So we should find these objects, we should track them, work out where they are going – and if they stand a chance of hitting us, do something about it.”
