Jeffrey Epstein postmortem

Six years after the world’s most infamous financier was found dead in a Manhattan jail cell, the final “shroud of secrecy” has been lifted.

As part of the massive 3-million-page document dump released by the Department of Justice (DOJ) this week, authorities have made public the most granular and graphic details to date regarding the post-mortem examination of Jeffrey Epstein. The files, released under the Epstein Files Transparency Act, include unredacted autopsy notes, forensic diagrams, and a series of “scene-of-death” photographs that have reignited the debate over the billionaireโ€™s final moments.

โ€œThe public has a right to see what the government saw,โ€ said Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche during a tense press conference Friday. โ€œThese files represent the totality of the investigative record regarding the events of August 10, 2019.โ€

The Three Fractures: A Forensic Flashpoint

While the New York City Medical Examinerโ€™s 2019 ruling of “suicide by hanging” remains the official government position, the newly released files provide a deep dive into the specific injuries that fueled years of skepticism.

The โ€˜Hyoidโ€™ Evidence:

The post-mortem confirms that Epstein suffered three distinct fractures in his neck: the left and right thyroid cartilage and the left hyoid bone. While the DOJ maintains these are consistent with a “drop-style” hanging in a 66-year-old male, the unredacted notes show that even the initial examining pathologists at the MCC (Metropolitan Correctional Center) marked the manner of death as “pending” for several days due to the unusual nature of the triple break.

โ€œI have never seen three fractures like this in a suicidal hanging,โ€ noted a private pathologistโ€™s report included in the file, echoing concerns that such injuries are statistically more frequent in cases of manual strangulation.

The โ€˜Nooseโ€™ Discrepancy

Among the most discussed items in the latest release are the photographs of the ligature used in the death. The files reveal a significant internal debate over which “noose” was the primary instrument.

  • Two Nooses: Photos show two separate strips of orange bedsheet lying on the floor of Cell 39.
  • The โ€˜Hemmedโ€™ Mystery: One of the nooses collected as evidence featured two neatly hemmed ends, leading investigators to question how it was “cut down” by guards as reported in the initial incident logs.
  • The CPAP Cord: A previously classified memo reveals that Epsteinโ€™s brother, Mark Epstein, had questioned why Jeffrey did not use the much stronger power cord from his sleep apnea machine, which was found in “perfect condition” on his desk.

The โ€˜Baitโ€™ Note and Final Scribbles

The DOJ release also includes a high-resolution scan of the “suicide note” found in the cell. While previously described in fragments, the full text reveals a man in a state of deep psychological distress or tactical distraction.

In the note, Epstein complained of:

  • “Giant bugs” crawling on his body and the floor of the cell.
  • “Burnt food” being served by specific guards (naming Tova Noel).
  • “Intentional humiliation” by being locked in a shower cell without clothing.

A Cold Comfort for Skeptics

Despite the wealth of new data, the DOJโ€™s summary remains firm: Suicide. The files include an FBI analysis of the SHU (Special Housing Unit) common area footage, which confirmed that from 10:40 p.m. on August 9 until 6:30 a.m. the next morning, no one entered the tier where Epsteinโ€™s cell was located.

For the families of the victims and the millions who have followed the case, the post-mortem files offer a grim closure to a chapter of American history defined by institutional failure. The “Epstein Mystery” may never truly vanish, but with these files, the government has finally put its cardsโ€”and its autopsy photosโ€”on the table.
