Neither men involved have been publicly named, and the only detail that police have released is that the beating took place in the sporting goods section of the store in Lakewood neighbourhood in Long Beach.

Lt. Eddie Hernandez said: “Witnesses have drawn the conclusion that the suspect is homeless. We haven’t confirmed that.

“The victim was in the sporting-goods section. The suspect approached him and started to attack him with a baseball bat, causing severe head trauma.”

Later reports said that the homeless man was asking shoppers for money and the elder man turned him down.

The homeless then picked up an aluminium bat from the sports section that he used to start beating the 74-year-old.

One shopper, Jennifer Thompson, was in the next aisle over when the attack occurred.

“Just think, somebody’s family is going to be home tonight and say <<My relative got beat up with a baseball bat in the sporting goods of WalMart>>. This was terrible,” the woman said.

“I heard no words, I just heard the noise,” Jennifer Thompson said.

“He must have been apparently hitting him with the bat.”

The investigation continues as police will try to gather information by looking through store security footage.

  1. This was a shame, I was there when this happen, but was on the other side of the store with a full basket of merchadise, the store was not that crowded it is a big store, It is a shame nobody stepped in to stop this from happening, I looked up and people were running through the asiles like a king kong movie with the alarm going with announcement to everyone to leave your baskets and exit the store, this is a shame because it didn’t take long for people to find out that this person hangs out at the store all the time. The person should have been removed and customers need to report this situation and signs should be in the stores so that these crazy homeless mental people can be removed from the premises, I understand things do happen, if I had seen this happening I would of made him eat that bat, just the 1st of the month and more females are in the store at this time and not many true men, god bless the man and family RIP, just hate I was on the other side of the store and my shopping and time was wasted on this day (lol) took me 2 hours to shop, lot of go backs, but It looks like they have more employee’s than customers on this day. This was very sad and looking at the officers faces this was a terrible vicous act, some people say the man head was beaten off his head terrible thing, someone should have stepped up.
