Odd Future leader, Tyler, the Creator, received the most votes for his single Yonkers at VMA 2011.
Other Best New Artist nominees were Big Sean (featuring Chris Brown) with My Last, Foster the People (Pumped Up Kicks), Kreayshawn (Gucci Gucci), and Wiz Khalifa (Black and Yellow).
Tyler, the Creator (Tyler Okonma) , Los Angeles rapper, was awarded for Yonkers, the single from his album Goblin, produced by Tyler with some help from OFWGKTA member, Left Brain.
The 20-year-old singer was very excited to get the award. After his mother embraced him enthusiastically, Tyler, the Creator went to the stage with his group. He received Moonman statue from Selena Gomez and Taylor Lautner, said he had not prepared any speech and encouraged the fans to pursue their dreams. Tyler’ speech was bleeped by MTV, but that seemed to be the essence.
“Yo, I’m excited as … right now, yo. I wanted this … since I was nine. I’m about to cry. This is for my little brother Earl. He’s not here right now. I really can’t believe I’m here right now. I didn’t write a thank you speech. I don’t know. … To all the kids watching, you can do this … Thank you.” Said Tyler, the Creator.
Goblin (2011) is his second album, the first was released in 2009 (Bastard). The black-and-white video from Goblin was directed by Tyler under the name Wolf Haley.
Tyler, the Creator was also nominated for Video of the Year along with Katy Perry (Firework) who took that award, Adele (Rolling in the Deep), Beastie Boys (Make Some Noise), Bruno Mars (Grenade).
Tyler, the Creator’s third album Wolf (with instrumentals that Tyler has been making since he was 15) will be launched in 2012.
