Michelle Obama causes stir in Saudi Arabia after not wearing a head scarf

President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama visited Saudi Arabia to pay respects to late King Abdullah and the first lady’s outfit caused a stir in a country known for its oppression of women.

Michelle Obama chose a fairly conservative outfit with loose sleeves that covered her from neck to toe. She wore a colorful long jacket with sleeves over a bright blue blouse and long black pants.

However, it was her uncovered hair and the lack of a head scarf that drew scrutiny.

Saudi women are required to cover their heads in public, although it is not required of visitors.

Politico reported that Saudi Arabians on Twitter criticized the first lady for forgoing this custom, using hashtags such as “Michelle—Obama—Immodest.”
