After questioning guards in disbelief,Luis Lopez was shuffled out of jail and into freedom, but it still didn’t seem right.
Luis Lopez, 37, called his lawyer when he got home, only to find out that his hesitations were for good reason.
Due to a mistake at the court office, the jail let Luis Lopez out too early.
“I was stunned,” he said.
The sheriff’s office placed the blame on the courts, saying that jail must follow all court orders, and they simply did as told in this case.
Luis Lopez’s lawyer called him back to say that he needed to turn himself back into the Marion County, Florida jail to serve out the rest of his original sentence.
“It would have been better if they had just let him serve his time instead of releasing him and then taking him away from me again!” said Luis Lopez’ girlfriend who would only say her name was Jaimie.
Rather than plot a way to stay outside of the cell block, Luis Lopez immediately decided that he would do the right thing and go back to jail.
“It never should have happened. I just want to do what I have to do now, and get on with my life. That’s it,” Luis Lopez said.
